- Easy mods to a Victor Rat Trap that make it more effective for small game. Enjoy! Please leave any suggestions in the comments.
I rambled a bit at the beginning...because there is so much misinformation out there that keeps getting regurgitated on UA-cam by people without any actual experience. I used this trap extensively this passed winter. Here is what I learned.
in a survival situation, I'm not worried about what laws I may break. my main focus is to survive, period.
steppenwolf 😂your the arrogant stupid one. If he was in a survival situation than obviously nobody will know he’s doing it. Fuck off with you dimwit over sensitive controlling ass. Acting like you don’t break laws. SOMEONE GET THE POPE WE GOT A SAINT ON OUR HANDS
Hello from Kentucky land between the lakes. Finally someone that's makes sense. Thanks for sharing this with us. I baught a couple of these traps for my survival pack.
And with the crazy things going on today with the covid 19 and ammo and change shortage the more you know the better. I have steel leg traps but there kind a heavy and awkward to put in my survival pack. Thanks again and God bless 🇺🇸
Check out the "Conibear 110" if you don't already know of them. Best bang for your buck, and it catches every time on small game. The rat traps don't compare. But I still carry the rat traps some times when I want to go super light weight. I've been wanting to go to LBL for a long time.
@@briargoatkilla I'll definitely check that out. There's 177000 acrs of wilderness and lakes. Its my home away from home. Plenty of fishing hunting camping and great for survival practices. Oh and plenty of ghost and sasquatch sightings if you're into that kind of stuff 😱😁
I watched this at the perfect time. The rats have gotten bad everywhere on the beach this year and they have gotten edumacated on my traps. That hardware cloth idea is one of my projects this weekend.
Cool man! Let me know how it works out. I didn't get to use them traps in the woods this year as much as I wanted. I still use them around the house mainly and they work great.
Awesome Mod! Your correct about the smarts of these critters…
Thanks for sharing!
Great mods Bro. I started taking four 110 conibears on trips for camp meet. A little heavier than your mouse traps but very effective. I can see were the mouse trap would be ideal in a back pack.
I think the conibears are way better...and not THAT much heavier. I have only used 220 and 330s. The 110s are ideal for you with how you carry/use them. Your vids are the reason I started messing with around with the idea of carrying small game traps, bud. The old game warden retires this year...and I'm already kinda friendly with the new one...might be able to make it work, LOL.
110 all the way if your target is squirrel. Dude nodded this m201 really well. But come on . Conibear in a tree is a guarantee.
What about using small finishing nails driven up through the trap to serve as impaling spikes?
It works wonderful! Put them on the front and the sides so that they stick out about 1/2". Haven't had one get out yet!
Good idea coming up with the tunnel cage. Like you I wasn't having a successful rate of capture with trap alone so I placed small nails pointing up to snag him as the bar came down, but that wasn't 100%, so I mounted the trap in a Paint Can and rigged the Lid as a door to close capturing him live. works really well.
Thanks bud...a lot of folks are using paint cans for billy pots. Might make a good video to show how you make a trap out of it.
please make a vid on this...greetings from nc tim
This is awesome Neil, I have several of these traps now in my pack but never have used them, I've favorite this video and I am going to do all your mods on my traps now like yours!!! Thank you for posting, like you "I don't care" either, I am trying it for camp meat! So cool! sure help me!
Thanks Karen. I hope it works you!
Really nice vid dude, I do rat traping in Spain and over here the rats are huge so this modifications help me a lot
You are a genius my friend ! Great mods !
Thanks Norm. You rock.
Me and my Wife just moved into our new home and right in front of our girls window is a very Large acorn tree.and there's a great deal of game that feast on our roof and a few squirrels in and out my attic.
my wife was talking of ordering some Tom Traps, but
thanks to u I think Dollar General would do us just fine!
Thanks man! I'm 1 day into using these traps with a gray squirrel problem at my house. All I've done so far is elevate the spring, but the chin bar and the side cage are going to be key! HH
Great ideas and fine modifications, Neil. I love your ideas. Thanks for the video and tips, brother. Have a good one. Peace Tito
Thanks Tito! Hope life is good, bro!
excellent review, will definitely try the little fence mod to eliminate side incursions!😉
This is really a different way to catch a squirrel. Good stuff. Cheers ;-)) I really like this. I am thinking of using some thing other than the wire cloth, cause I don't want to accidently catch any small birds...I am thinking a simple Popcan Aluminum will do the same funnel action..but hide the bait from the birds ?? Cheers ;-)) what do you think ?
I think that is a great idea! Cheers.
Just Curious.... When mounting trap on a tree, which is better; Bait side of trap UP or Bait side of trap DOWN?
Down. BTW, I recently got the "all steel rat traps" from Self Reliance Outfitters...they are WAY better than these.
@@briargoatkilla WOW, those metal traps are awesome... They are out of the box ready, no mods required, I ordered some, can't wait for delivery. thanks
Excellent ideas brother. Like the camo job too!
Thanks bro!
Good job bro ! that thing looks like a beast. Hope all is well ..
Thanks Brad. This one will put meat on the table for sure.
Great video, just what I was looking for!
This is the answer for all home less people, in order to have a steady source of fresh meat in any down town setting. This is the answer for a quick kill as well.
I'm impressed with your upgrades, 2 thumbs up!!
Thanks!
Sir, you have one hell of a smart and creative mind. You should really think about selling these. Besides having to get around the copyrights on the traps you buy to modify them, this is a very good idea. You could make a good amount of money
dylan palombo Thanks man! Like I said, the idea was not mine...I found it by researching different trapping and survivalist forums. I am considering putting together a sales website that includes all the gear I use on a regular basis. I have found many very inexpensive but extremely dependable items in my years hunting, fishing and backpacking. Peace!
I was waiting for it to catch your finger.
Thanks for the tips. I like to glue the bait to the trigger. An almond or some whole corn works for me.
Glue the bait on huh? Awesome...might solve the whole dang problem right there!
That's pretty cool thanks for posting this I was looking for an easy and effective trap
Thanks man. A 110 conibear is a better choice for the long term, but the rat trap definitely works.
great mods my friend I will have to do this to my trap ! thanks for sharing !
Thanks bud! Let me know how it works for ya or if you come up with something else.
Very good video, smart thinking and to be honest that would be perfect to have a couple in a bob or something. be a sure fire way to catch small game even mice and such as well and probably birds even
Thanks man. Yeah they are super light weight, easy to pack and catch all kinds of critters.
Yeah a very good item , that with some snare wire you would be set i think, for small bush wood. thanks , i liked the vid so i can have it to watch again , for when i get some traps i'll try this out.thanks.
Good day. If you place the bait inside a wire mesh and hold it, it doesn't matter if the squirrel or rat accesses it from one side. I use a chocolate kiss as bait or an M&M inside the mesh. good luck
I did the same thing with mine for the tension, but that is where the similarities end, I drilled four holes in the front and two holes on each side= 8 holes and screwed 2" deck screws up from the bottom, it is very affective, I caught several grey squirrels with my Victor rat trap, they don't even struggle, because it pins their head down and it breaks their necks instantly.
Sweet ideas. Thanks Neil
Thanks Hugh! Cheers.
very good video most people wouldn't show. I love your I don't care attitude. its educating
Thanks Trav!
Is there a demonstration of the success you've had with this clever modification??
I can't find it?
I trap squirrels almost daily with an unmodified Victor Rat Trap an PB year round... I did spray paint em though.
Nice vid... Back it up man.
I've set these traps unmodified at least two dozen times before I researched these mods and did them. I fenced them with sticks, hung them vertically on a tree trunk, hung them from the rafters in my barn, placed them in my attic...the whole nine yards. They have a ten percent catch rate at best unmodified. YMMV, but you ain't catching grey squirrels in these daily...you are only fooling yourself.
You were close to the way my grandpa would do it What he would do Is put those carpet nails Nail those carpet nails from underneath And leave them pointing upwards So as to provide the trap with some biting power (with teeth) So what ever gets caught (or bitten) by this type of trap will literally be stuck there And won't be able to slide out Like they sometimes do When ever they don't get caught on there just right Well the nails as teeth Will keep your catch still on there Till you get back to check 😁 😁😁
Nice mods bud!!! I had to laugh when you talked about the legalities of use... I dont care either - if im hungry and need meat Im gunna be eating meat..!!!
LOL. I have high regard for the law but when it comes to a real need to take food from the woods, I feel like it's none of their business.
briargoatkilla You have a high regard for law that doesn't inconvenience you. Which makes you and a common thief on the same moral and ethical level. Survival need is one thing, wanting camp meat for your weekend trip to the woods is another. And did you eat that chipmunk? Kill only what you need and eat everything you kill. Or don't kill it.
Excellent excellent,,,, great ideas I will modify mine tonight good clear video too,,,keep up the good work!!!!!!
Thanks for the great ideas.
Great vid bro... love the sensible mods.
Thanks Hillbilly! Hope you guys are well.
If you already paint the trap, how bot paint the wire cover. Small animal may spook about silver color.
yep. good call, man.
Thanks for this video. Awesome information.
Thank you!!
Oi! You got a loicense for that trap?!
nice mods!
I take a piece of wire. I wrap it up in the middle to make it slightly thicker. Then I put the wire thru the pan opening. from that point I can put a piece of gummy bear on each side. I dont add a full one maybe a 1/4 on each side. Then I slaver on enough peanut butter to atrract them from longer distances. peanut butter has a odor that works. I also switch up the baits on a irregular interval. and move the traps to a different location. they can tell time too. but if you change the location they have to relearn the trick. The wire increases the leverage on the trap pan. so even a bait robber will get caught because the gummy bear requires then to use their teeth to get the prize. I have use pieces of corn cob slathered with peanut butter too. black walnut meats work too. acorn meat. ect. Ilike the fencing I will be adding that to my set ups.
Excellent Randy. Thank you. I'll try the wire trick and gummy bears.
I went to town to get the hardware cloth to add this to my traps. I am mostly after rats and other rodents but the issues are the same as yours. I'm going to make the hoops larger. and then clearance them to let the trap bale and set rod travel the same.
the detail about the tape. the wire I used wasnt big enough so that you could collapse the bait pan down to tighten it up. I couple thickness of tape made up the difference.
Great info thanks for sharing!
Thanks for checking out the video, man!
Pretty slick. I'm here to catch rats better. Instead of the cage, wouldn't just a wall on either side accomplish the same thing? Dont want to buy a whole roll of wire cloth for 1 sq'
wicked mods
Thanks Robert!
lol briar squirrel killa great idea I did a double spring on mine it snapped and flew apart lol
LOL!
awesome!
Yea, if I'm deep in the woods, I could care less about laws, those laws are for the city or anywhere where cops patrol, deep in the woods there are no laws to me! It's survival and anything/everything goes.
Great idea, that little varmint you got there I've been fighting for years.Like Steve Earl sang I gotta a brand new plan. Thanks See Ya :>)
Yes, they reek havoc on out buildings and basements. Hope this helps ya.
It’s legal here in Tennessee 👍🏻
Click to 7:30 for mods.
I need that...
Help identifying Coop Creature
It's pretty bad, you don't know what the difference between a chipmunk and a squirrel is, that was a chipmunk, of course your mods will catch those things with a wire cage, you wouldn't catch the grey squirrels here in Iowa with that setup.
good talk pal.
Sauder some nails to tip that trap no way they guna live.i hate rats.be a fast painless death or razor blades on end end game for sure
U just gave me a million dollar idea...ty
I watch lot people starve on survival shows... Let's make a big mouse trap for pigs or fox size as good as a gun but less effort sorry sounds sick but I'm thinking mouse can't feed family of 3 and less effort better chance to survive just take that model super size it don't lose a arm.lol
Some nails or blades make pain end fast not suffering just dinner.
