Belghoria Expressway is a four-lane 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) (including Dakshineswar to Rajchandrapur extension) long access controlled tolled expressway in the North Suburban fringes of Kolkata, West Bengal. It is a key arterial road, linking the terminal junction points of NH 16 and NH 19 at Rajchandrapur (near Dankuni) to Dakshineswar across Nivedita Setu and then to NH 12 (Jessore Road) at Dumdum/Kolkata Airport. Belghoria Expressway is part of AH 1.
The Belghoria expressway, built by the National Highway Authority of India has been operational since 2008. It is a major arterial road in the north of Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, and links the northern suburbs of Kolkata to the city.
The 16 kilometers long, four-lane tolled expressway connects Dankuni to Jessore Road which is also part of the National Highway 12 (formerly NH 34).
Dankuni is in the north of Kolkata and an industrial township. Many companies such as Mother Dairy, the Food Corporation of India, and Coca Cola have established factories here. The town stands at the important junction of two main highways connecting the state- NH 2 and NH 6. Both these are important and busy highways as NH2 connects West Bengal to Delhi running through the states of UP, Bihar, and Jharkhand. NH 6 connects Gujarat to West Bengal.
Belghoria, another northern suburb is also now a major business and residential hub. Dakshineshwar an important town of the North 24 Paraganas district of West Bengal is also connected across the river Hoogly through the Nivedita Setu. All these northern suburbs are very thickly populated industrial areas with many jute, cotton, and chemical factories.
The Belghoria expressway starts at the junction of NH 16(formerly NH 6) and NH 19 (formerly NH 2) at Dankuni and ends at NH 12(formerly NH 34) NH 12 connects Dum Dum in North Kolkata to Dalkhola and is an important connection for 24 Paraganas, towns in West Bengal, the northeast such as Siliguri and Guwahati, and Patna in Bihar. Dum Dum is about 10 kilometers from central Kolkata.
The Netaji Subhash Chandra International Airport, earlier called Dum Dum Airport is on this route. The Belghoria expressway has now has reduced the traveling time to the airport and to the important link road, the NH 12, to less than half an hour from the northern suburbs, especially from Dakshineshwar, which is across the river Hoogly.
Nivedita Setu (also called Second Vivekananda Setu) is a multi-span extradosed bridge completed 2007 over the Hooghly River connecting Howrah with Kolkata, in West Bengal. It runs parallel to and about 50 m downstream of the old Vivekananda Setu opened in 1932. The bridge is named after Sister Nivedita, the social worker-disciple of Swami Vivekananda. Belghoria Expressway that connects the meeting point of NH 16 with NH 19 at Dankuni to NH 12, Dumdum/Kolkata Airport, and northern parts of Kolkata passes over the bridge. The bridge is designed to carry 48,000 vehicles per day. The bridge rests on deep-well foundations going down to the river bed level. It carries six lanes for high speed traffic. The carriageway is supported by 254 pre-stressed concrete girders. Cables from 14m high pylons extend additional support.[3]
Nivedita Setu is the first bridge in the country that is a single profile cable-stayed bridge. By design, the height of the columns are lower than the tip of the Dakshineswar temple.
