(1) The result of Emperor Jiajing’s augury from last episode was Qian (乾), represented by the symbol ☰. It is the maximally positive (male, or yang) of the eight signs of the Bagua. According to the definition given in the I Ching, Qian is associated with the four concepts Yuan, Heng, Li, Zhen (元亨利贞). As I explained before (see number 10 here), these four concepts can be translated as creation, growth, harvest, and preservation. In particular, Zhen is used in the show to allude to the characters Hu Zongxian and Zhao Zhenji.
(2) Senior officials used to all have seats in front of the emperor. With the ever escalating power disparity between the ruler and the ruled, this privilege was lost in the Song Dynasty. Since then, only individuals were granted the privilege as a sign of particular favor.
(3) This line (老而不死是为贼) is written in the Analects and attributed to Confucius. Of course, there is a particular context in which Confucius said these words about a particularly egregious person. It should not be taken out of context, since in general Confucianism certainly advocates respect for and deference to one’s elders.
(4) The Ghost Festival (中元) occurs on the 15th day of the 7th month in the Chinese calendar. It is a time for many traditional religious activities venerating one’s deceased ancestors.
(5) The Large Rat (硕鼠) is a poem from the Classic of Poetry, compiled by Confucius. While on the surface it talks about pests in the field, it makes obvious allusions to the greediness of rulers and government officials.
