My personal theory is that the maze is connected to a giant temple underground, and it was originally made to turn tiny people big. (Presumably to more effectively fend off against giant ancient monkes. (As seen from fossils during october in the mountains.)) Eventually, it was reverse - engineered by their future relatives after the basement was sealed off before the events of gorilla tag. (It got sealed because the top of temple suddenly rose through the ground.) The ruins might be able to be accessed via the secret door in caves.
