This influential German science-fiction film presents a highly stylized futuristic city where a beautiful and cultured utopia exists above a bleak underworld populated by mistreated workers. When the privileged youth Freder (Gustav Fröhlich) discovers the grim scene under the city, he becomes intent on helping the workers. He befriends the rebellious teacher Maria (Brigitte Helm), but this puts him at odds with his authoritative father, leading to greater conflict.

It actually had mixed reviews. Sure, everyone loved the visuals, but many people criticized it for its supposedly communistic message, and after the premiere it had almost an hour of footage cut out and the title cards rewritten, reducing it to a Frankenstein ripoff.

The fact that this takes place in 2000 and that it’s 2021 and we’re not even close to having the technology from this movie makes it like time only changed a little bit since 1927.

In reality we do have other technologies that were absolutely incomprehensible to the people from the time this movie was made, like the internet itself, miniaturized electronics (even the conept of the transistor was alien to the people of that time), nuclear power, spaceflight, plastic materials, antibiotics, fully mechanized production lines, even jet powered airplanes.
Sure, life-like automatons are not there yet, but a lot of other stuff has surpassed what people from 100 years ago believed technology will be like in our times.

Everything he has done, was way before its time.

The perfect teaser to the classic 1927 Sci-Fi film. Sit back and turn the volume up on the premiere musical score by Gottfried Huppertz and watch the movie in it's entirety. You won't be disappointed.

Hollywood would have never existed without German film. German expressionism gave us cinematography that makes one think. One scene says more than a hundred words.

Star Trek TOS did an episode called The Cloud Minders. The intellectuals live in a utopian society in the clouds while the Troglytes, considered inferior, slave away in the mines mining zenite. However, both are of one race and the Troglytes dimenished are due to zenite gas.
