This influential German science-fiction film presents a highly stylized futuristic city where a beautiful and cultured utopia exists above a bleak underworld populated by mistreated workers. When the privileged youth Freder (Gustav Fröhlich) discovers the grim scene under the city, he becomes intent on helping the workers. He befriends the rebellious teacher Maria (Brigitte Helm), but this puts him at odds with his authoritative father, leading to greater conflict.

For a film made in 1927 this is pretty damn impressive
i’m impressed now in 2021, i can’t imagine what the people of that time felt
Very impressive. A true masterpiece. I was surprised to find that it's available on Amazon.
Just imagine seeing this in 1927. This has got to be insane
1927 harrison ford 'blade runner"..
Like an early Pink Floyd gig.
Yass
It actually had mixed reviews. Sure, everyone loved the visuals, but many people criticized it for its supposedly communistic message, and after the premiere it had almost an hour of footage cut out and the title cards rewritten, reducing it to a Frankenstein ripoff.
Definitely!
This film is nothing short of incredible. Hopefully it gets a special reissue in the cinema one day.
Sam Esmail, the creator of Mr Robot is making a remake of it currently. Based on Sam's talent and specific style I am sure it will be good.

The original is being played with live orchestra and the soundtrack from 1927 in Berlin on s regular basis!
I bet you anything in 2027 there will be some theaters playing this
The fact that this takes place in 2000 and that it’s 2021 and we’re not even close to having the technology from this movie makes it like time only changed a little bit since 1927.
It’s probably because we didn’t fully embrace technology
In reality we do have other technologies that were absolutely incomprehensible to the people from the time this movie was made, like the internet itself, miniaturized electronics (even the conept of the transistor was alien to the people of that time), nuclear power, spaceflight, plastic materials, antibiotics, fully mechanized production lines, even jet powered airplanes.
Sure, life-like automatons are not there yet, but a lot of other stuff has surpassed what people from 100 years ago believed technology will be like in our times.
@@alexandrucraciun6978 Ok, I guess that means we’re close to what the movie shows.
@@johnnywilson1382 not at all if you think about it. This is a prediction of the future based on 1920s inventions. Because they couldn’t comprehend 21st century inventions. So our world will never look like this and it would be somewhat naive to guess once again what it will look like because technology develops so quickly. Crazy to think about 🤯
Not even Close you reckon I think we are more then close even surpassed it look around you.
Absolutely insane how they had such special effets and large sets before colour and even sound were prevalent. Truly groundbreaking art.
Sound was Available but Directors thought people wouldnt want to hear Other people talk in Film on camera. Boy was they Wrong
@@dexterhaynesiii8875 Wonder if this could have been due to the audio quality at the time maybe?
1 of the best films ever made period and the fact that people are still talking about nearly a 100 years after it's release speaks volumes

Good call. My buddy was saying the same thing.
Just imagine a remake...
At first, I was expecting something like an original 1927 trailer restored, but the edit shown here is great!
We were shown part of this movie in AP World in high school a decade ago, but I've never seen the whole thing. Hopefully they'll re-release it in theaters for the 100th anniversary in a couple years
We interrupt human technological advancement in order to bring you a 12th century plague. -happy friggin' 2020.
Lol

It’s not a 12th century plague. I didn’t know the 12th century plague had a 99% recovery rate. It’s the flu

Fun fact: If Metropolis released today and took place as far into the future as it was released in 1927, it would take place in 2097 (Might be off though)
Looks better than most Marvel movies

Amazing film, by the year 2000 we're be living and working on the moon. While this film was set in the future, still had aircraft of the 1920's and the acting, i imagine people were far more easily scared back then
Truth in plain sight. Its a documentary.
It would be fun for audio to be added now
Nossa! Parece que eu já ia ver a cara do Fred Mercury 🤣
