  • Giant sequoia trees generally grow on the western slopes of California's Sierra Nevada Mountains.
But, for the past 73 years, three sequoias have survived and thrived along a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan in Manistee.
That's not supposed to happen, but it is.

the key is to plant them on a high bank so its roots wont sit in water if it rains a lot, the tree suffers a lot from Root rot east of the Rockies, also if you buy them from a Nursery make sure you thoroughly rinse off the rooting gel because Fungus loves the stuff too which can kill a tiny seedling

It can grow in Cold Climates it grows naturally 4675-8159 feet in the sierra nevadas, and they get plenty of cold days in the winter the coldest temp recorded at Sequoia National park was negative -5 F, I mean once you get below 10F degrees I would say a tree is cold tolerant as long as its roots don't freeze

Im plantimf them too. Therr is no reason why the Ohio river valley shouldnt have these. N America and across the entire temperate world including Ireland France and Germany ise to have these. They disapperead off France 20000 yrs ago probably do to impact of farming. I hope they germinate as many seeds as possible for genetic diversity for the midwest.

@@proaudiohd three i planted last fall survived the winter. I have this swamp pond... and i clip the branches off and it looked like some of the cuttings would survive to that i stuck in the mud, but dried up the second i turned the water off... one of the cuttings made it... the longer the swamp pond goes the better it gets. I am sticking dawn redwoods sticks in mud and it looks like those survived as there buds are green. The one Dawn redwood seedling i had that i found underneath the largest one from the park is already blooming though... understandably. Bald cypress seedlings come up too... one giant sequioa cutting did survive the winter that i stucknin mud i can remeber and looks kike it might root and another on is looking pretty good that i stucknin mud around Feb. If it lloks like a branch is going to start dieing off the seedlings i get from ebay for 7 dollars... i cut and stick in mud... all i can say is make sure they dont dry out. Remeber the ones in Sierra Nevadas that survive fires are 1000's of years old with extensive root systems

It's amazing right up to the point he wants $1,000 PER SEEDLING, and you can't plant it yourself. Cant reforest the world like that!

exactly! I watched this vid and another with him in it.
made me to the arbor day foundations website! (my choice)
So you can buy these from the Arbor Day foundation for $12.99 each, hardy to USDA zone 6. I wanted to buy from this place after watching this video, but seems they do not sell and only plant trees on "carefully selected properties after long consideration.. Some trees can require as much as $1000 a tree in resources"
In another video he said "You don't need any money". $1000 IS MONEY. $12.99 not so much.

3000 years in evolutionary history is like the last minute before this one. You gain very very little, if anything, by a specimen like that. But in America, where a building 50 years old is considered "old", you can make the headline with this.

as soon as I hear 'climate change' and the threat of extinction in 50 years, I instantly change the channel. Anyone over 50 know why.

The planet is on fire? Love what he’s doing but with or without his work the glaciers are coming back. The planet is not on fire and man will survive and adapt. But keep up the good work because I love trees and their ability to store carbon

While I like what he"s doing I don't care for buzzwords like global warming, which the effects and cause are still a theory and reforestation. There are more forested acres now than 200 years ago in the US. We've grown these trees for over 20 years here in north idaho they do quite well.Sounds like he is worried aboiut keeping his funding.Just because old growth is cut does'nt mean the forest is gone.
