My wife and I recently traveled to Metropolis Studios to see the unveiling of new speakers from Genelec! "The Ones" have a phenomenal ability to deliver a solid stereo image both on and off-axis while also giving you a point source.
Point source technology is essentially having a Tweeter, Midrange, and the drivers all radiating and hitting you at the same time! I think you will all love the fact that there is no disconnected feeling from the sub and mains!

@@Deckie1969 That would really be fun, Chris Selim's or David's place as well.
Interview Ido Zmishlany!
Since you're located in Silver Lake, CA what about Capitol records, I grew up in Los Angeles, my first step Father was president of photography at Capitol Records I remember going with Ken Veeder and seeing the production process. I was only 6 at the time but it did leave an awesome impression on me. I have a story for you about Pink Floyd ask me later.
Immersive... nothing can beat that demo of quadraphonic sound my dad had in the 70's, where the sound of a train would go around you. Classic! ;)
I can imagine! I know that first experience with our Parents! Amazing!
This channel is the best point source for mixing info!
YES !! It is !!
I have a pair of Genelec 8330 in a relatively badly treated room and the sound from these beasts is out of this world!
Room response correction that these monitors do with GLM 3 kit is night and day, and I can never go to normal speakers after this.
man these things look amazing.
I agree
Hi Vergil9, agreed! They are amazing my friend!!
@@darlenesheffield9835 thanks ever so much!!
I did a lot of mastering sessions at Metropolis. Great studio
That's amazing to hear!!
Outstanding. Having these guys from Genelec there really gave us all the facts and tech on the table. Awesome job Warren. Blessings from Oz
Thanks ever so much Julian!
Warren is The Fly that goes into every spot we'd like to be at
Hi Gui Schwertner aw shucks! Thanks ever so much!
NICE!! Great mini tour and new products from Genelec!!
Yes and yes! Thanks ever so much! Glad you enjoyed the video!!
That Genelec Glue!
Yes!! Very well put!!
Now Genelec needs to develop a consumer product so music made on these can be heard at it's "best". We need better laptop and smart phone speakers.
Yes, indeed Loren! I agree 100%!
They had a passive wooden (consumer) speaker back in the day, really loved them, would sneak into my brothers room to listen cd’s
Millmoor Michael what were they called
@@Producelikeapro Genelec Headphones would be great !!!
The amount of quality you are putting out lately is astonishing. Cheers Warren!

@@patkelly3966 wow!! Thanks ever so much my friend!!
Great to see Adrian Chiles back discussing “The Ones” show.
Genelec should start making studio microphones also to match their speakers.
Hi Tommi Björk yes, I imagine that’s in their future!
Those are lovely speakers for sure. But they cost a bit to much for me 😊 I have the Ik multimedia MTMs and they are amazing for the price. Would be interesting to hear your views on them, as they also are point source.
Hi Stefan, yes, I've reviewed the IK Multimedia speakers! Here iOS the video:- ua-cam.com/video/BPMTJnHwjWg/v-deo.html
Hi Warren, those are the Iloud micro monitors, they are great too, but I was referring to the new ones, Iloud MTMs
I must admit GLM 5.x is what makes these SAM monitors sound as best as they can in any room (yes even rooms with zero sound treatment).
Hi Warren , I was staying in the hotel over the road from Metropolis the same weekend you were there , was kind of hoping to bump into you if only for a photo opportunity , anyway i was in chiswick to do pre production for a some rock tracks I'm playing on and will be recording at Circle Studios in Birmingham in November with Trevor Gibson producing , should be fun ! oh great video by the way .
I hope the recording went well!!
Question to Genelec: Just in short, "A room mode can cause both peaks and nulls (dips) in frequency response. When two or more sound waves meet and are in phase with each other at a specific frequency, there will be a peak in response. When they meet and are out of phase with each other, they cancel and end up with a dip or null in response". This is completely room dependent and only solvable with the right acoustic treatment of the room, means with sound absorption to avoid that sound waves are getting reflected back in the room where they interact with the direct sound from the speaker. A 150Hz peak or Null is pretty common [229CM/7.5 ft wavelength] My question to Genelec, In which way is your speaker able to solve a NULL in the frequency response that is triggered by the room? [again: null, a sound cancellation due reflected waves that are out of phase meeting with the direct sound wave] To my knowledge, any form of applied EQ for example will not solve this problem elegantly. If the speakers EQ function would make a boost at 150HZ, almost the same amount of the boosted 150Hz would be reflected by the room and the out-of-phase waves would still cancel each other out. Wouldn't it need a lot of boost to achieve an unaffected by-product that lifts the dip a bit? Wouldn't that be a bit like driving with a hand break on? Please explain and correct me if I'm wrong
Hi RockmannMusic, Thanks for the great detailed comment! I wish I could answer for them! I can only say the results are truly wonderful! I was extremely impressed, frankly if I wasn't I wouldn't have put this video up! I only get behind things I firmly believe in! I really appreciate your understanding of the subject!!
Genelec's GLM system only applies corrections to peaks. It won't even attempt to fix nulls via DSP. The difference here is that they're attempting to get rid of mid/bass nulls by cancelling out reflections that cause them in the first place via the rear facing driver on the bass towers (there are two drivers, on at the top facing you, and one at the bottom on the back of the tower). This is similar to how speakers like the Dutch & Dutch 8c or Kii Three create a cardioid response in the mids and upper bass frequencies.
RockmannMusic The solution of this problem with W371 is based on having two woofers being positioned at two different locations in the room. You know room modes are distributed in your room according to the room dimension. So two woofers with freely assignable crossover enable you to distribute the radiation of particular part of the spectrum to the woofer that has less room mode influenced location. So it is not about EQ-ing the null, but playing particular part of the spectrum at a spot in a room that is less room mode affected.
Thanks for the awesome video! If we're talking immerive audio, have you ever heard of the Smyth Realiser A 16? Curious on your thoughts on it if you ever get a chance. Keep up the awesome work👍
Thanks ever so much Jeremiah! I haven't heard of that! Tell me more!
So right about acoustic engineer s..
Can you recommend a monitor for mastering? I have very limited space. I’m using small genelec s.. and the new sc 203 s.. by nerves..
Have you been to Sun in Memphis or Hitsville, USA in Detroit?
No, those are all great ideas my friend!!

Do you think its worth to upgrade from the 8351a to b?
Hoop diddy diddy, hoop diddy do!
oh to purge my 8040A's and get pair of 8341A's . About double the cost of 8040's .
would have been better to hear the Genelecs
Hi david dkeole listened to them a lot, even here in the video if you watch the whole thing. However unfortunately a camera mic isn’t going to tell us much!
Maybe a factory tour would compensate Warren. Use a quality mike and Di with your camera? Thanks keep on Producing Marvellously. Do you remember reading Marvell Man Comics?

@@KalleHullu yes!!
Someone else mentioned microphones but what I'd really like to see Genelec do is create an ultra near-field floating headphone like the Valve Index's nearfield headphone/speakers for VR (basically don't touch your ears and are completely open). Maybe a more traditional closed headphone system as well. Finding great headphones that can reproduce audio in a flat and accurate way has always been a massive challenge, but I think its something Genelec seem to be up to since they've been going down the immersive rabbit hole (also Aural ID?)
Ever try headphones?
Thank you Warren and Genelec!
Thanks ever so much Audrey!
I can't wait to hear these in person! Budget ran out before I could pick up Genelecs, but hopefully someday! Thanks for the informative tour! Keep them coming!
Yes, Jordan, you will be impressed!!
I’ve had mine for 15 years, no issues, no change in the sound, build like a tank
Unusual and, dare I say it, ( with ultimate respect to our American sisters and brothers ) quite refreshing to get a peek into a British studio that isn't Abbey rd!

Hi Danil Venho yes! That would be very exciting indeed!
Genelec are the only ones I truly trust.
I'm currently using a pair of 8040B's in my studio. Used the 10-series back 15 years ago, when I studied composition and production.
Thanks ever so much for sharing!
I got spoiled with Genelecs on a radio gig a few years back, now I'm helpless without them. Dammit!
@@LasseHuhtala haha I hear you!!
I'm so jonesin' for The Ones (or even the new 1032's). But I can't sell my car at the moment and my bands' 6 records has so far only generated about a tank of gas worth of dineros. But they will be mine one day. Oh yes. They will be mine.
I hear you Lasse! We all have gear lust!! Thanks for your great comment! I wish you all the best in your future career!
@@Producelikeapro Thanks. I'm mixing on garbage right now. But a friend has some Genelecs I can check my mixes on. :-)
@@LasseHuhtala fantastic!!
Great video, thanks Warren. I love how passionately the guys from Genelec talk about good room sound and a listening experience. I think that's one of the reasons why their speaker systems are so good because they certainly bring that passion into developing their product.
Thanks ever so much Genelec!! Yes, agreed 100% my friend!!
Great that Genelec have seen to make a complementary as you pointed out there can be a disconnect if they are too like an effect, sub bass in nature only exists in thunderstorms and earthquakes [as a New Zealander I can certainly verify that] so having it over accentuated in instruments is inaccurate, so props to Genelec for addressing this, thanks for a great presentation fantastic work as usual!
Marvellous! I couldn't have put it better myself!! Well said!!
I was fortunate enough to make a record at Metropolis in Studio A a few years ago. What a fantastic studio and it's managed so well. Also, there's a piano in the live room which belonged to Freddie, or at least there was... Great place.
Thanks ever so much Dave!!
Could you do a tour of Harmans research facility where they have a carousel of different speakers they can do blind AB comparisons with?
Wow! That sounds fantastic!!
@@Producelikeapro I think it's on the west coast, California or Washington perhaps. Sean Olive worked or works there.
Heard from an insider that they once did a blind test between a Bowers & Wilkins 800 Diamond and a JBL 7 series (mini M2 basically) and the audience guessed the JBL was the B&W.
Hey Warren how about demoing the Avantone CLA-10A’s in your studio?
Hi Armando Diaz very interesting idea indeed!
I would not put the ones in my bedroom studio, it’s not worthy!
Haha I would if that's what I do for a living! Even a bedroom!
Great video Warren!:) Quick question what are your thoughts on making a vocal booth out of plastic pluming pipes and sound reduction sheets around all for corners and 1 above. Do you think it would cause a lot of low end issues ? Hope my question makes sense :(
Thanks ever so much Miguel for the great question! I would imagine, from what I can see is that should work? However I have never personally tried that, so I can't unfortunately comment.
Depth (in a mix) is challenging. Someone once told me that, all my mixes sounded like being on the front row at a metal show..lol
Haha yes!! I hear you! We've all been guilty of that Edwin!!
@@Producelikeapro Thank you for your positive take on things! It's easy to get lost, now days. So Industry standard . Use to hear that quite a bit. What is industry standard now. Vst's and Vsti's..Just wondering.

I can't stop thinking about Wall-E for some reason. :)
Haha funny man!
Warren are you getting one?
I just finally did!!
Great woofer design (W371)! I wonder why Genelec has not presented a network audio compatible Speaker since the 8430A IP. Especially if "the ones" are advertised for immersive rooms, AES67/Dante support would be great.
Yes, agreed Fabian. I was very impressed with the adaptive woofer!
ATTENTION ! Do not buy this GENELEC speakers if you work with MAC OSX Calatina or newer, because there is currently no control software on this operating system for the speakers !
Thanks for this interview. But I knew long before this that the 8351s are my dream set up with 2 subs. One day!!
Fantastic! Thanks for sharing!!
You sir are making my decision to upgrade to Genelec an easy one! Thanks for everything, I truly appreciate you!
Marvellous
I thought that would make a great stand for my 8351Bs... until I saw the price.

@@LasseHuhtala exactly
Giv...... na, I won't say it.
Hahaha
This is a great, full in depth discussion of these new monitors. I am looking fwd to being able to hear them. Anyone know what the price point will be? Warren, you would say that these are the next step in speaker design? filling in all the gaps you would say
Is there an application where someone would crossover to a sub at 500 hz? does the SAM/GLM let the mains take care of a specific band that would be lower in frequency than the sub? this could benefit from speaker positions vs sub position interacting with room modes i would think?
huuummmm... I couldn't fit them in my setup I'm designing... does the GLM system let there be some new adaption if I'm mixing these with one of the standard matching subs?
Ever heard the live recordings for lewitt from metropolis? They're embarrassing. One of the engineers there is a joke and doesn't the privilege of working there.
Is it normal to have a hiss coming out of the speakers when no tracks are playing?
If they are VERY loud!
Nice! Very nice. But why the green Led in front?! Nothing for home cinema. A shame.
A GeneLeak
Hi Gui Schwertner haha indeed!!
I wonder how the newer Genelecs (The Ones) compare to Focal Trios.
so is there an 8010 in the new range yet?
I know nothing of studio monitors or recording music, yet just watched 30 mins of advertisement and was truly fascinated. I wish all adverts were done like this -- organic, enthusiastic, non-silly.
