Zendaya's singing and lines just hit me on such a personal level here. (Note I am not gonna remember character names, so assume I'm referring to them when i say the actor name. Unless I'm not, lol)
Zac's lines express his undying affection for her, how he wants to continue living on loving her, and how they together can create their own future without the weight of the world on them.
Zendaya is the thematic opposite of him here. She shares his affection, but because of her race and her appearance, she can't be with him. She is the only one between the two of them who sees that them being together will cause others to label and mistreat them, and given the timeframe, even kill them (or most likely her).
Even forgoing the overarching theme of self love that this movie has, this song itself having that duel theme of love that will defy all/love can't defeat everything blends so well together and is still applicable even these days. Interracial couples still get flack, along with really any other couples that either don't share a race or aren't straight presenting. The world seems like a place where love can take you everywhere (Zac's interpretation of what their love can do), but it can just as easily place you somewhere that your safety is easily forfeited (Zendaya's point on their reality).
That's why you hear Zendaya singing in such a soft tone for most of the song. The truth is heartbreaking for her to accept, and the fact that Zac can't accept it himself means he will keep bringing her moments of hope just for them to get crushed by society. She starts off with trying to be blunt (You think it's easy/ But there are mountains...and there are doors we can't walk through) to tell him in her way it's useless. However, she gives into her (rightful) pessimism and say they can't change society with their different kind of love nor can they fight what holds them back from being together and happy (No one can Rewrite the Stars/ Everything keeps us apart). She even for a couple of moments tries to say they aren't meant to be together despite knowing she wants to be (listen to her voice getting energized for a moment when she sings "You think I don't wanna run to you"). In the ending verses, her voice gains volume and energy because she is giving into the hope that Zac is emminating, as I mentioned before. But once at the end of that emotional high, when all is said and done, she comes back down and remembers their stations, and decides to be the one to break the cycle between them (But I can't have you...we're bound to break and my hands are tied). You can hear the pain and regret in her voice as she is doing.

Winston K. I mean I wasn’t a HUGE fan of “The Greatest Show” but it’s grown on me and I bet after the epic scene in the film I’ll love it even more. I was raised watching classics like "Singin' in the Rain", "White Christmas", and Disney movies as well ❤ I'm so happy that they're becoming popular again, aside from Disney movies.
I'm a much bigger fan of stage musicals than film musicals but I'm happy too. Speaking of White Christmas, I'm seeing the stage version two weeks from tomorrow night.

I come from an upper middle class family against interracial dating, and the love of my life is a beautiful African American woman from lower class. The stares we get from all types of people are often ugly and my family acts close to Zacs in the movie. Just saw the movie. Brilliant from start to finish. Don't listen to the critics. I am 51 and had NO idea I was waiting my whole life to see this film. Your heart's gonna break wide open, be ready, it's beautiful.

Laurie Eno It's an amazing musical but it's not a great movie. Plot was all over the place and pacing was really weird. However, the fact that it's so entertaining makes it worth it. I was actually able to ignore all the annoying pacing problems and enjoy the film, and I actually had fun. Keep in mind that movie critics judge by seeing if it's a good movie, not musical. Movie critics came in with an expectation that the film didn't meet, it doesn't mean the film won't be entertaining. There's a reason the Transformers movies keep coming out despite being steaming piles of dog shit.

This movie was fantastic. For anyone that refuses to see it "because it's a musical," they don't know what they're missing. It has a good story (regardless of its historical inaccuracies,) great choreography, great talent, and fun songs. It is completely worth seeing in theaters. The scene between Zac's and Zendaya's characters is beautiful. GO SEE IT!

This song is very special for me and my mom. We both love this movie and whenever we go on road trips together, we inevitably play the soundtrack and duet this song. I take Zach's part and she takes Zendaya's part. Lots of fun memories just singing this at the top of our lungs :)

Sometimes it's absurd how much I can relate to a song
The greatest snowman never melting
The chemistry. The song. The story behind the song. ALL OF IT IS SO AMAZING. The fact that this was set in the 1860s, around the time when slavery was being fought against in the civil war, it makes this so much more heart-wrenching. How much they want to be with each other but the world doesn't want them to be. It's truly beautiful. Their differences make them perfect for each other in a way. UGH, I love this so much.
I hate to be that guy, but you aren't even close on your time period. The movie occurs in the late 1910s. Racism was still largely present, but slavery had been gone for quite some time. Don't get me wrong though, still a freaking awesome song.
I love this song too and I agree with everything you said. However, I do wish Phillip and Anne's romance would have been executed more as the beta couple of the movie. Or being a Hairspray fan myself I think of them as the movie's version of Penny and Seaweed.

Barnum died in 1891, so no, I was correct. Also in the movie, his father calls Anne the help and it hurts her even more because of the fact that slavery was still around and being fought around that time which is why he calls them small minded people

I personally thought it was really interesting and very very well done. The songs were very welcoming and weren’t forced like a lot of musicals. BUT I wouldn’t say it’s so GROUNDBREAKING and a MASTERPIECE. Some people are kinda overrating it lol but oh well. Everyone has different opinions.
