I don't even watch the video and give you 👍. I know it'll be a great video. I'm just playing catch up. Life has been busy. Check out tractorman44... He has solid walnut hand railings over 17+ feet long. A couple of them. Reclaimed from a building they built...circa 1882. I should have copied the link.
Question from outside the realm of this kind of work: How does the saw blade not end up binding due to the weight of the cut portion of the slab pinching it?
Alternating teeth on the blade are bent out slightly, which makes the kerf slightly wider than the blade itself, preventing it from binding (basically).
A huge welcome back from Scotland. There is something hypnotic about watching the blade cutting through the log, then when you pour the water on the cut surfaces and the grain is revealed it`s Magical !!
Great to see you milling again Nathan and boy what a first log in it’s new home. Probably your best Christmas present. Love cleaning up with sawdust. Take care dear friend....keep on milling! Graham🇬🇧🇬🇧
Thumbs up done! Now suggestions: dust collection; 3 inch flexible 20 feet hose($9) starting on the exhaust port of the Woodmizer, collected to the Oneida dust deputy($39), installed on the top cover of a 15 gallons plastic drum ($10) with a large sealed cover, that is collected to a large shop-vac vacuum (or any vacuum laying around) ... the dust deputy will keep in the barrel 99.99% of the saw dust, keeping your vacuum clean forever, no need to change the filter every day! you can choose a 45 gallon barrel, but it's heavier to manipulate. As for keeping the air fresh, a flexible metal tube, collected to your Woodmizer exhaust, through a wall and connected to an dryer port outside, high in the air or near the ground, depending of the walls configuration, and your in business, no more fumes inside....Walnut is the most beautiful wood around! nice video!
We don't have any Walnut trees growing down here so it is quite expensive to pick up. One of my favorite wood's to work with though. Thanks for sharing!
You got my thumbs up. Good video and great slab right out of the gate after 4 months. Missed all that walnut figure for a while. Good to have you back at the mill.
On the removal of the sawdust maybe get a cheap dust collector, harbor freight or whatever, and run the hose outside ! Doesn't have to have the bag on it unless you want to catch some ! Now that you've got electricity there handy it could work ! Nice looking walnut! Thanks for sharing and take care. 👍
Good to see back on the sawmill. I am sure you're happy now to have your shop up and running. Moving house always seems to be much more work than you think. Thanks for another good video.
Hell yes been waiting for this video great to see the woodmizer up and running again few more little tweeks to the workshop and you'll have an efficient operation there
Congrats on finally being able to saw and being under a roof no more worries about the rain. Im sick of the rain this is the first week in georgia it hasnt rained in i dont know how long.
You should either put a vent fan in the roof or in the gable end to pull the exhaust fumes out of the shed. Using a fan at the floor is only going to circulate the poisonous gases that get trapped at the ceiling.
OMG at 14:07 that grain is just beautiful. To move the sawdust a simple conveyor system taking it away and dumping in a container would be sweet. I was wondering about the exhaust fumes too. A fan that exhausts the fumes out from the area above the engine exhaust similar to a cooktop exhaust fan.
Thanks for the great video mate, hope there's many more logs to go through the mills new home ,but how can a quarter of an hour go so quick ,no longer had I started watching and it was done . When I'm blessed with the presence of my mother Inlaw time seems to slow ,and fifteen minutes can seem like days ,maybe I should start watching new episodes with her. Cheers from down under.
Glad to see the sawmill up and running, I’m getting ready to saw up a walnut up, it’s 16 feel long with one crouch, thinking about cutting it in 1/2 or 1/3, not sure yet it will be 9/4
Tamarack sort of comes out the same as walnut (not as dark)It’s a light green, sometimes light brown heartwood that darkens a little after. I like the old limbs/knots that do not come out all the way to the edge. They make little points that go out into the sap wood. I think most places they call them eastern larch ?? I had some milled and air drying that I cut in the fall. I plan to get them planed and use them for the bedwood for my old GMC in the next couple years. I hope they don’t warp like they are supposed to. I have them stickered and weighted. I like the videos, it’s golden to be able to let the kids watch and they enjoy it as well, have a good day!
Your new place looks really nice Nathan and so doesn't the walnut crotch! That's coming from a girl who loves her walnut! Blessings to you and your loved ones for a Happy New Year!
So Nathan, now that you're inside, dust management is more of an issue. I mill inside. I prefer to hang a 5 gallon bucket off the chute. When full, I dump it in a Rubbermaid Brute Tuff 42 gallon garbage can. When that is full of bark and dust, I use a 2 wheel cart to take the can to my burn barrels and burn all the bark and dust in my Vortex Burn barrels. I've done a thread on my Vortex barrels on FF if you're interested. With the amount you saw, you can keep up burning all your dust and bark that way. vortex burns cleaner because of the cyclonic action bringing more air in. Double stacking makes it burn even cleaner and faster. You can burn wet dust and bark. Once you have some coals in the bottom the heat will dry out and burn the wet dust and bark. It's a lot easier burning it than trying to find a place to decompose it. Brad_bb on FF
For the dust - You need a long open top box with an auger screw in the bottom ... like you find in a silo only horizontal.. The other posts finally loaded-lots of good ideas
Had a thought Nathen, (yes it hurt.) You said something about dust collection, you might look into a older Vacuum truck or trailer. That way your not stuck with a big vac system you can't move. That way you can deliver chips to anywhere... And ya don't have to build a stationary unit. The big stationary units you need both pockets full of money just to look at them. Sometimes a viewer may have a machine they know of. That's my 2 cents. The best of luck for the new year to come.....
Converting the mill to electric is a good idea now. Collected sawdust, the farmers will buy all you can make. Excellent for the fields. Or give it to them, make friends in the area.
Nice looking first cut in the new building! Are you going to make something special with it, say maybe a new sign outside your building!! Or something for the wife/family! Really enjoy the video content! 🎉Happy New Year, your off to a great start! 🍃🍂💎

How about an inexpensive dust collector . I have a grizzly in my work shop with a home made cyclone collector made from a 55 gallon drum . I saw a lot of oak . That's our most common species in Connecticut. I wish we had some walnut .
Good to see you up & running! Two questions now that you're milling inside: 1-Not just engine exhaust but dust has to be much thicker. Is wearing a mask a good idea? 2-With all the saw dust blowing out the exhaust tube, how/what do you think you can control & clean it up ? Some sort of HD collection??
@@OutoftheWoods0623 I got terrible cold & sinus infections from sawing inside the barn first winter till I figured out the problem. Cedar was biggest cause. Stay healthy!!!
Looking at the sawdust outlet Nathan could you not jerryrig a bagger around the outlet maybe on a small trolley tied to the miser it might get the worst of the sawdust, good to see you sawing again, thanks.
I haven't read the other comments but off the top of my head, can you install a large vent fan in the ceiling (like what is over a stove but on a larger scale)? As for saw dust on the floor. Would that flexible plastic tubing used for dryer vent work? If you had a long enough piece that would allow for traveling the length of the timber and feed into a large wooden bin? Maybe neither would work but those are my ideas. Enjoyed the video.
I can't wait to see the rest. I'm curious, why you didn't line up the pith of both branches to be the same height off the bed. My thinking is that you will get a more uniform pattern (In the crotch area) on each slab. Walnut IS Awesome, Thanks for recording it.
Should make an adapter to hook to your garden hose, that way you don’t have to keep filling the jug up all the time. Put a bag on your sawdust exhaust. When it full just empty the bag.
For the sawdust chute, why not mount a 5 gallon bucket on a hook and have a wheelbarrow back at the start so you can empty it into on the return ? Then it would save most of the time spent shoveling off the floor and such ?
For dust in the air, I saw a guy on another channel take several cheap box fans and pop rivet some brackets to hold furnace filters against the inlet side of them. Think he used MERV 6 or 7 filters. They did a really good job of catching dust in the air. They obviously wouldn’t help with the fumes. You be damn careful with carbon monoxide! P.S. That wood’s about as pretty as it gets.
Why don't you look into flexible garage exhaust hose ??It comes in 10 ft lengths, and it connect to itself to make longer lengths. Just set one end of the hoe to your engine exhaust and plumb out to where ever you want. It's not cheap but it beats the smelly exhaust. might find it at the fles market or a closed garage. email me for details. I also know a vendor that sells it. It's a really flexible hose. It has a 3" diameter I think.
Brother I have a couple of questions or you; #1 is that an aged log? If it's freshly cut down, how long does it take to cure? #2 Don't they make metal detectors especially for logs? Just curious! Would love to have a sawmill but it's beyond my reach. Keep the great vids coming!

@@OutoftheWoods0623 yes and have it dump right into a trailer then dump it in your garden.
I'm thinking just a few exhaust fans (like bathroom types) over the mill would take the fumes out.
