    Starting back in the 1960's my Dad, my brother and I used to deer hunt all over this area including around the old tannery and along the Tannery Road. One of the things that my brother and I were into was exploring the old logging roads with my Toyota Land Cruiser. On one of our explorations we decided to see how far down the old tannery road we could go and if we could find the old tannery. It turned out to be an excellent jaunt and we were able to 4 wheel drive our way all the way down the old tannery road right into the site of the old tannery. We spent the better part of that day poking around the site. From what I see on your video I'm guessing that the old tannery road is no longer vehicle accessible all the way to the tannery site. I'm best gussing that we made that trip back in the 1970's or so. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Nice job.

      Thank you for sharing your story. Sorry about the delay in responding. I did not get a notification that anyone had replied. The road is grown in a lot and about half way the beavers have damned up a few sections. I was lucky and went when the water level was low so it was easy to get around. They do have another way in now that you can almost drive all the way in that I found a few weeks later when I went back. I was also pretty lucky that the water levels at the brook was low. When I went back, I was unable to cross the brook to get back to the cemetery. I'm honestly amazed that I had never heard of this place before. I grew up in this area. I will say that partridge hunting in this area was amazing.
      Thank you for watching!!

    Great video. I also live in the area and have wanted to check this out since hearing about it 5 or 6 years ago. Thanks!

      It really was a pretty cool place to check out. I took the family there a couple weeks later and the water level had risen so we could not cross the stream to the cemetery. When I took the family I entered using a different trail.

    Great job. Explored this area in the 1980's and this was a fantastic revisit.

    Wow!!!! Thanks for this video.! I have always been obsessed with abandoned towns. Years ago my husband, my son and I wanted to explore Dogtown Mass. We packed for the day and drove to Cape Ann Mass and hiked through the woods. It has really been overtaken by the woods now. It was interesting but we got lost and were very nervous about finding out way back to the car before dark. We didn’t run into any people the whole day. The story is much more interesting than the place town itself. It’s called dogtown because of the incredible amounts of feral dogs there. There are reports of wolves, massive unknown animals and ghosts even during the day....none of which we saw. Anyway.....wondered if you had been there? We live in York County Maine so I think we will stick to Maine for our next abandoned town adventure......maybe Riceville. 😀

      I have never been to Dogtown, even though it sounds like you had an adventure of your own exploring Dogtown. I really like the abandoned town/ghost town adventures. Maybe this summer I'll have to do some research and explore Dogtown myself. Thanks for watching and commenting!!

    This video came across my feed due to my interest in hiking. This is really fascinating. There must be abandoned towns all over New England.

    Which map would this be on the gazetteer? Or the closest towns/townships to it?

      @ExploringME  5 днів тому

      @AdamB12 I believe it is page 33 or 34. Look for Buffalo Stream or Brandy Pond. It is west of Brandy Pond.

      I did find the other way in. I really wanted to do the video based on the original road into town. The back way is so much easier, and lots of birds.

    Cool video, I kinda wanna explore it now. What road are you on in the beginning of the video?

    • @ExploringME
      @ExploringME  3 роки тому +2

      24-06-0 is the road. You can only access Riceville the way I went when it is really dry.

      www.goodreads.com/author_blog_posts/9867666-riceville-a-real-maine-ghost-town this link has directions. The directions to Riceville Road is spot on. The second set if it is flooded is not. Just drive past the first stop and turn right on a road where you see a brown 5 gallon bucket cover nailed to a tree. The first jeep trail on the right will take you there as well. If the cover is still nailed to the tree.

    Any animals to be aware of?
    Like black or brown bears, coydogs or anything dangerous to keep an eye out for?

    • @ExploringME
      @ExploringME  3 роки тому

      It is Maine so Black Bear and Coyotes are in the woods but unless you leave food laying around they shouldn't bother you.
