I just read on an environmental analysis company website that vinegar plus baking soda is one of the most effective mold killers on both porous and non-porous surfaces. They said that the bubbling shows that it's working, and it kills the roots that bore into porous surfaces so it doesn't grow back.
They may cancel each other out but I use both in my laundry and don’t use fabric softener clothes are soft and my Color’s are bright and whites are whiter works wonders! And my clothes last much longer as well 😉
@edennis8578 please give me the link for this. The bubbling is the chemical reaction that takes place when vinegar and baking soda come in contact with each other.
I add 1/2 cuo baking soda to the wash tub and use vinegar in the fabric softener dispenser. They are never combined in the same step because as she explains, combining them creates a neutral (and ineffective) solution.
Personal experience: i tried the "tying a bag full of vinegar to the faucet" method a couple of years ago and totally ruined my stainless steal faucet. It got discoloration everywhere the vinegar touched. So if you're thinking of doing that, maybe check on a more hidden spot before you ruin the whole thing 😅
Maybe I'm just a strange person, but I like the smell of vinegar. I have done the orange peel in vinegar and it does change the smell. Another great thing about adding orange peels to vinegar is the d-limonene that the peels contain. D-limonene is a wonderful degreaser and is also toxic to all life stages of fleas. So, adding orange peels to the vinegar not only makes it smell better, it gives it an extra degreasing boost and kills any potential fleas if you have pets or even just live in the country like I do.
I’ve been using a cup of vinegar in my laundry and it works perfectly to remove strong smells from my clothes. I work out doors and its been a game changer for me.
If you have a pile this really bad or towels that smell mildewy, let them sit in a bucket of vinegar and water for an hour before washing and just dump the whole bucket in the machine (if you have a top loader.
I ran to Walmart to buy cleaning vinegar when I saw your video back in 2011. I’ve been cleaning with it ever since. I’ve saved so much money and my allergies have lessened. My pets don’t scratch and lick themselves as much either. However, I did use the cleaning vinegar on my stone kitchen countertops and it did ruin them. Yeah so…..Do Not Use Vinegar (white or cleaning) On Stone Surfaces. You’ll regret it. 😢🥺😕 👩🏽 Edit: Using vinegar on stone strips away the shine. ✨ 😢
I am glad that you are honest about what you taught us before. A lot of UA-camr seem giving us wrong information about vinegar. I have been using it for my quarts countertop and recently the fabricator said that I should only use a little bit of soapy water
Thank you for addressing the animal pee/ vinegar! I see so many people suggesting vinegar to remove pee smell and it's very frustrating to watch them give bad advise.
No scrub shower/bath cleaner: 3:1 solution of vinegar to blue dawn dish soap. Add your fav essential oils (optional, but strongly recommended). Spray on the shower stall, glass door, tub. Let sit for five minutes, then rinse. No scrubbing and your shower will shine like new 😒. It’s a good cleaner, but you will be scrubbing. The vinegar is overwhelming too, so add essential oils.
Could you please address essential oils that are safe or not for people & pets? Also the difference in usage for regular vinegar and cleaning vinegar. Thanks!
Any plumbers here know of the temperatures of boiling water will really MELT plastic pipes? From what ive seen in stores, they are pretty thick and sturdy to withstand those kinds of temps and that it would have to be a lot hotter than that to melt them.
No wild and wacky lately however after watching this I won't bother to spray vinegar on my slider, which the neighbor's cat continually sprays and I will use it to mop my vinyl kitchen floor tomorrow. You learn something every day. Thank you.
Speaking of cleaning agents that neutralize each other, vinegar is acidic and (Dawn) dish soap is alkaline so the 2 combined create a pH neutral solution. So many people have been influenced to try this combo but each one weakens the other.
This combination was suggested in this very channel and my husband used it once to clean up our bathroom- we had just moved in to a condo. Nonetheless, he used too much dawn soap and never again has he gone back to revisit the cleaning recipe 😆
help me understand why we cant use softener on yoga/ sports clothes and if vinegar is harmful as well. or if neither is harmful. i've been using it instead of softener too and now i just feel silly! but on a happy note so stoked that i found your channel! i love to clean the easy way lol
Fabric softener has chemicals in it that reduce the wicking qualities of yoga pants/leggings. Might be like the way if you use fabric softener on towels over time they will lose their absorbency due to the waxy buildup.
About descaling kettle and similar: I use water+vinegar about 50/50, and it works well. And it's not necessary to boil the liquid. Save enegry, just heat until it's warm and leave it to stay about half an hour. Rinse it, even with cold water, and you're done.
After juicing 10 lbs of oranges, I decided to make citrus/cedar vinegar for cleaning. I added some sugar to the water and peels with the cedar. I stir it every day and it should be ready in about a month.
I know that vinegar works well, but like most people, I don't want my house smelling like salad dressing. I have heard about the citrus peel and vinegar recipe, so I will be trying that in the very near future. The smell of vinegar doesn't make me gag; I just don't like it lingering around my house. We'll see how this works.
I use vinegar instead of bleach in my bath towels but I don’t put it down my garbage disposal; instead i save lemons after juicing them and dispose the lemon.
Check the instructions on your electric kettles before boiling vinegar in there. It can disintegrate the seal at the bottom and cause leaks. Sometimes I will just heat the vinegar up a bit and let it sit overnight instead. Boiling will definitely get rid of the limescale but it will also get rid of a seal if your kettle has one.
What do you recommend to clean, disinfect and shine quartz kitchen counters? I pretty much use my DIY dawn power wash and would love your input! Thanks so much for this updated info. My husband will be thrilled to try out downy rinse refresh!
I’ve been fighting stains in one of our toilets for a year…several different tools & products. I’ll look for cleaning vinegar and give it a shot…thanks for the suggestion!
I too had stains and like an about 10 min wow all away. I used Acid toilet bowl cleaner called ZEP from home depot. Just take all the water out with a cup then pour product in and wait shortly and then scrub a little and easy as 123! Hope it helps. I learn it from a guy in UA-cam.
The only time I use vinegar to soften clothes is when it's something that can't or shouldn't take softener. Specifically my silk pillowcases. I'll also add it to the softener, 50/50 when I run the delicates as it helps distribute the softener better so nothing ends up too stiff or filmy.
I stopped using fabric softener in my laundry..as much as I loved the smell as I've heard it contains wax that seals in the odours and stops towels from being absorbancy as it seals them with wax. Also it's extra chemicals we don't need on our skin.
White vinegar does great on rabbit urine!!! When cleaning rabbit cage Pour white in the plastic tray and let it sit for a bit...it has something to do with enzymes, it dissolves the urine that accumulates on the tray!! It's wonderful for that type of urine!!!
Thank you! What about when people say to put a cup in the dishwasher during a cleaning cycle? I have soaked “rust proof” metal objects in vinegar to get the cleaning process started and found it took off the clear “rust proof” coating. Can it damage the fake metal coating of shower heads and faucets?
I am having issues with the water line in my toilet bowl staying dirty. It has become gritty and pitted and impossible to clean even using bleach only last a few flushes.
Hi there! HUGE fan. Looonnngggg time follower! Thank you for this updated information. Greatly appreciate your continual knowledge. Question about the Downy Rinse Aid. I did try it and thought that it did clean well. No soap residue etc. My only struggle is with our fragrant it is. Fragrance (not being disclosed what is being used to make the scent) is typically an endocrine disruptor. Do you have another suggestion or a non-fragrant Rinse Aid that you would recommend? Thank you in advanced. :)
I understand that in theory, cleaning with vinegar and baking soda together wouldn't work. Except it really does work. I use it sometimes and I think it works great. My theory is that chemical reaction that nuetralizes each is actually helping with the cleaning.
Thank you! This is the best video I’ve ever watched for cleaning with vinegar. I’m not a fan of the smell, but it dissipates pretty quickly and I put essential oils in my solutions. The one that sticks around the longest, though, is my floor cleaner. I have ceramic tile with grout and I think the grout holds onto the smell. Any recommendations?
I don't think it's a good idea to use vinegar on grout. It's probably holding the smell because the grout sealant has worn off or been eaten away by the acid in the vinegar. It sounds like your grout needs to be resealed and then just stick to a pH neutral floor cleaner like water (preferably hot) with just a tiny amount of castile soap, Sal Suds, or your dish soap.
if you have bad smell comeing from your drains it’s because you’ve got a plumbing issue more than likely a venting problem and vinegar is not gonna take care of that
The bathrooms at work occasionally have a sulfur smell, which are sewer gases. I pour either water or vinegar down the drain and takes care of it. I agree for more serious issues to contact a professional.
I learned essential oils are toxic to cats, even when diluted. No longer using them in my floor cleaners! I use vinegar based fabric softener - switching to Sonett!
Hi Melissa, I clean somewhere where strong smell of urine. Men's toliets whats best non toxic thing to use to get rid of it bleach doesn't shift it for as in constant use
Hi, I’m confused. I bought your 50 DIY cleaning recipe e book (which I love) and the hardwood floor cleaning recipe says to use vinegar. Have you changed your mind on this since writing the book?
What about using a water/vinegar solution to spray on clothes to help get smells out? Not actually pouring in the machine. I am trying 1 part water and 1 part vinegar in a spray bottle.
I used the "vinegar during the rinse cycle" method for years, and I was happ[y with it. But recently, my apartment complex got new, heavily-automated machines that won't let us open up the lids to do that, so I've had to abandon the practice.
Are they top or front loaders? There should be a reservoir for fabric softener where to put the vinegar. So. You would put in your detergent and then the vinegar in a different spot, close the lid, and Bob's your uncle.
Melissa just said you would need 5 cups of vinegar for a load and no reservoir holds that much. She recommends using Downy Rinse and Refresh, 1capful or 1 Th in the reservoir.
Thank you for another informative video! For clarification please, when you mentioned that vinegar should not be used on stone...are you including quartz in that?
using straight up citrus peels to clean things without wiping it down with water after. Could be wrong, it just seems like it would be sticky or leave a residue on the surface.
What is your suggestion for mopping bathroom. I feel like I need to do on my hands and knees with a spray and paper towels starting at the door and ending with toilet area.. I don't want to spread the toilet area yuck to the other parts of the bathroom.
Thanks very helpful. When we clean windows with Vinegar and a microfiber cloth, do we have a dry microfiber to follow the wet cleaner and prevent any streaks? I was told to just use newspaper to clean windows - is that bad? Does the black newsprint come off? Can microfiber clothes being reused many times after cleaning, then just thrown in to a dirty rag washing?
I'm a professional window cleaner and I don't use microfibers they get wet and smear on the window just buy regular 100% cotton cloths they absorb better and yes you can reuse any of these rags you buy
Is downy rinse and refresh safe to use with your microfiber clothes? I have heard that fabric softener can build up on microfiber and reduce its effectiveness and, therefore, shouldn't be used.
I have a question about laundry. I have switched to Ecos laundry soap because I’m trying to use less toxic products. I have a problem though where after doing laundry, my clothes just never smell clean. Like the stink is imbued in the clothes. I can’t quite pinpoint what it is though, kind of musty maybe? Not quite like BO smell but it is kind of gross. I don’t use any dryer sheets either. Just the Ecos soap. Why are my clothes so smelly all the time? Also I just recently started sprinkling in some baking soda when I wash too. They’re still quite smelly though.
Citric based product in your rinse cycle of your laundry. Could you use your own citrus peel/vinegar based product that you share at the end of your video in your rinse cycle…. Capful?
Please, do NOT use vinegar and baking soda down your sinks IF you have an older home with cast iron pipes. Vinegar eats up cast iron, especially if there is a clog and it sits there. Yes, I found that out the hard way. 🙄
I watched a video by a washing machine repairman and he said over time the vinegar can eat away at the tubing and gaskets. He recommends baking soda instead. Buying the big bag sold for swimming pool maintenance can help with the cost.
Ok myth or truth…and this info was given to me by a repairman. He said, "Don’t waste your money on store bought tablets to clean your washer. Use 1 cup vinegar + 1/2 cup baking soda that you dump directly into the front load tub and immediately start your "clean washer" cycle". If I understood what you said, this neutralizes each other and I’m basically washing my washer with salt water…help - please advise
No, the chemical reaction between the vinegar and baking soda is a very good cleaner. After the chemical reaction is done, then probably not so much. For that reason, you can't mix them together in a bottle and save it; it has to be used immediately.
i actually buy in bulk lemon salt- it is becomenig acetic acid in water- which is basiclly condence viniger , i use it as a spice, as a powder cleaner raw or mixed with soda, washerclwaner - so i dont need to buy any viniger, also not lemons, i useit for food too- its all in 1, less weight, and no plastic. also its much better and cheapas kettel cleaner- only 2 spoons and water
So I’m wondering if anyone has gotten ants from this? I used it on my kitchen countertops (not stone) a couple of times and then I rinsed it off. A couple of days later there was like a thousand ants and it took a few days to stop them. I did see online vinegar attracts ants. Anyone else have this happen? I like using vinegar so I’m really bummed
When I googled it, one pest control company said that a bowl of vinegar will attract ants and they'll climb into it and drown. Everyone else said that ants are repelled by the smell. It looks like "everyone else" is wrong. Btw, I had hundreds of sugar ants coming in my side door to get my cats' kibble. I sprinkled a line of talcum powder across the doorway and in the corners and it stopped them dead. I mopped up the ants in the house with baby wipes. It usually kills them instantly. The cleaner I use on the floor also kills them instantly.
Also very toxic. I been looking on the EWG and most of the Laundry soap and other Laundry items are extremely toxic endocrine disruptors cancer causing chemicals that get absorbed into your body with the skin being your largest organ. Causes fertility issues and immunotoxicty
So if vinegar and baking soda can’t totally get rid of smells and gunk in your pipes what do you use? Lol I am a long time user if vinegar and baking soda either together or separate lol.. for cleaning the washer monthly can you still use baking soda and vinegar? My mother in law uses fabric softener even tho I have sent her so many articles on why you shouldn’t so I clean mine every 2 weeks and was wondering what your thoughts are on that.. can you do a review on the fabric rinse tho.. what’s your thoughts on that is it like fabric softener or different and how?? Thanks lol I love your videos..,
I've never turned them off when cleaning them in my cleaning business. I usually place everything in a large freezer shopping bag so everything stays cold and clean it as fast as possible.
I never turn off my fridge or freezer when cleaning. As the person below said, I sometimes put items in cold bags, but honestly, it takes me such a short time to clean my fridge/freezer, nothing even starts getting warm before it's back in the clean fridge/freezer. Even my deep freezer - I just place everything in a laundry basket, clean it, put it all back in. With all the frozen stuff stacked on and around each other, it never starts to thaw.
Can I just say "Thank you" for explaining that mixing vinegar and baking soda cancels each other out.
I used to tell people but they never believed me. So glad to have Melissa putting it out there!

Exact same thing happened to me. I was so upset. I swore never again. But thank you for warning people about this only wish I had been warned lol.
I did it on all my chrome faucets and they’re fine. Removed all the hard mineral scale.

@@Weemadaggieadding baking soda to the wash also helps eliminate odour and brighten 😁
It is gold when in the washing machine with my Guinea pigs habitat liners, plus laundry detergent or Castile soap
I was told it will degrade your rubber gaskets over time so you shouldn't use it in the washing machine but I dunno
Great tips-thanks! Word of caution to anyone with birds in their home: never boil or heat vinegar in any way indoors! The vapors are harmful to them.

Especially bad on shiny marble!
I am glad that you are honest about what you taught us before. A lot of UA-camr seem giving us wrong information about vinegar. I have been using it for my quarts countertop and recently the fabricator said that I should only use a little bit of soapy water

Correct!
Thank you for addressing the animal pee/ vinegar! I see so many people suggesting vinegar to remove pee smell and it's very frustrating to watch them give bad advise.
I had done that for years.
My friend got me hooked on using Rubbing Alcohol in a spray bottle. Beautiful on stainless!
I use it too! Works great in the bathroom!
Do a video like this about rubbing alcohol
Thank you.

Interesting. So many use them together.
This combination was suggested in this very channel and my husband used it once to clean up our bathroom- we had just moved in to a condo. Nonetheless, he used too much dawn soap and never again has he gone back to revisit the cleaning recipe 😆

I do use vinegar in fridge and other places, the odor does go away in a short time.

What % vinegar for spray bottle and washing machine? 30% or regular vegetable cleaning vinegar?

Use Polident tabs. Drop them in the toilet bowl and let them sit overnight and then flush.
I always spray my veggies and fruit with distilled vinegar and then use a drop of Dawn and wash my veggies and fruit to help remove pesticides
So what should we use for softener in the laundry then? And is that product safe for septic systems?
The only time I use vinegar to soften clothes is when it's something that can't or shouldn't take softener. Specifically my silk pillowcases. I'll also add it to the softener, 50/50 when I run the delicates as it helps distribute the softener better so nothing ends up too stiff or filmy.

I originally found you when you made the video of cleaning a keurig with vinegar about 10 years ago lol!
Love the flashback to the vid with an Initech coffee cup. If you could bring that back, that'd be greaaaaaaat.
Hi thank you for sharing your cleaning tips ❤❤❤
I have ruined 2 Keurigs by using straight vinegar. Now I use 1:1 with water and my current machine has lasted a long time and is still going.
Thank you!

I understand that in theory, cleaning with vinegar and baking soda together wouldn't work. Except it really does work. I use it sometimes and I think it works great. My theory is that chemical reaction that nuetralizes each is actually helping with the cleaning.
I agree! The chemical reaction causes the combination to fizz and it bubbles the crud off.
I also agree! I’ve been using this combo for years. If it didn’t work I wouldn’t do it😊
It's the reaction of the two that's making it work.
Such practical information, thank you!

I love to use citric acid - it doesn't have that strong smell that vinegar has and works just as fine :)
Isn’t it crazy citric acid is in 95% of all foods
I learned essential oils are toxic to cats, even when diluted. No longer using them in my floor cleaners!
I use vinegar based fabric softener - switching to Sonett!
Thanks for sharing!!
I love your watch! What watch are you wearing? Do you have multiple color bands?
actually vinigar+soda worked great as stains remover -left for a couple of days
Great information, thank you

Hi Melissa, I clean somewhere where strong smell of urine. Men's toliets whats best non toxic thing to use to get rid of it bleach doesn't shift it for as in constant use
Hi, I’m confused. I bought your 50 DIY cleaning recipe e book (which I love) and the hardwood floor cleaning recipe says to use vinegar. Have you changed your mind on this since writing the book?
We’re waiting for you to answer the question Melissa?!
I love your channel ❤ unfortunately, I suffer from asthma and have previously had bronchitis, so I can't use fabric softener 😢
My washing machine lies to me. The wool setting suggests 40c is the optimum temp to wash wool. As if! I always change it to cold!!
Don't let it tell you otherwise!!!
Yes any natural stone
I add lemon oil to vinegar and water.
using straight up citrus peels to clean things without wiping it down with water after. Could be wrong, it just seems like it would be sticky or leave a residue on the surface.
Hi from the UK! When I tried the kettle descaling ( it wasn’t over filled with vinegar ) it boiled over 🙄what did I do wrong? xx
your thoughts on influencers using baking soda and vinegar to clean fruits and vegetables?
Thanks for this.
Could you talk about using citrus acid to clean dishwashers etc.
We are going to make a video on citric acid :) Thanks for watching!
Brilliant info
Random question. Does anyone know the background song? 😀
What is your suggestion for mopping bathroom. I feel like I need to do on my hands and knees with a spray and paper towels starting at the door and ending with toilet area.. I don't want to spread the toilet area yuck to the other parts of the bathroom.
My kettle didnt get the build up off after i boiled vineger in it
Thanks very helpful. When we clean windows with Vinegar and a microfiber cloth, do we have a dry microfiber to follow the wet cleaner and prevent any streaks? I was told to just use newspaper to clean windows - is that bad? Does the black newsprint come off?

I'm a professional window cleaner and I don't use microfibers they get wet and smear on the window just buy regular 100% cotton cloths they absorb better and yes you can reuse any of these rags you buy
Is it ok to use white vinegar+ water 1:1 to clean quartz and ceramic countertops?
FIRST! (aside from the nearly-naked bots)
Oddly I like the smell of vinegar.
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Did I miss cleaning the shower portion????
Would the vinegar for hard water work alright for brushed bronze.
Thank you
How does washing with vinegar affect the washer? Would live to try this, but not sure about the washer.
Is it safe to use vinegar on ceramic floor tiles?
I’m so allergic to fragrance that I started using vinegar instead of Lysol and I’ve never looked back!
Can't stand Lysol or Pine Sol
Thanks Codie!
So does the cleaning bathtub recipe not work ??
What are your thoughts for olive oil black soap which is apparently good for almost everything and natural? Thank you 😊
Melissa, off topic … Your hair looks great.😊
p.s. I 🩷 cleaning with vinegar!
Thought the same thing. I bet she's an expert at cleaning her hair too ❤😂
Oh thank you!
There's so much of misinformation floating around. This is 'the' channel i trust. Been a fan since 2011!!! 💜💜💜
I’m not a fan of cleaning with vinegar at all.
i actually buy in bulk lemon salt- it is becomenig acetic acid in water- which is basiclly condence viniger , i use it as a spice, as a powder cleaner raw or mixed with soda, washerclwaner - so i dont need to buy any viniger, also not lemons, i useit for food too- its all in 1, less weight, and no plastic. also its much better and cheapas kettel cleaner- only 2 spoons and water
Can I use artificial vinegar to clean the toilet?
Wow !!!! 🙏🏼
Wait what is the recipe for vinegar and dish soap and hot water for floors???
Downy RINSE & REFRESH is also a fabric softener, i heard that was bad for washing machines longterm?
Also very toxic. I been looking on the EWG and most of the Laundry soap and other Laundry items are extremely toxic endocrine disruptors cancer causing chemicals that get absorbed into your body with the skin being your largest organ. Causes fertility issues and immunotoxicty
I was absolutely going to use vinegar to clean up after my new puppy...not anymore 😂
Thanks lol I love your videos..,
So excited for a new Clean My Space video!!!☺️👏🏽
Thanks for watching Maria!
How do you remove lime scale from a kitchen faucet when you have natural stone countertops?
You can use vinegar, just be careful :)
Just said no?????
How do you clean the freezer without turning off the entire fridge?
How do u remove rust stains from kitchen sink ?
Barkeeper's Friend.
