He was incredible - one of the greatest frontmen of alltime.
He wrote a song called I've Got to Give it Up about his alcoholism. Which is what killed him. When you know the history of it. It is so sad. He knew his drinking was killing him. But didn't stop. But he wanted to deep down to stop.

A storyteller and poet.
A mixed race man with an Irish heart and soul
He died young but musically achieved so much in what was only 13 years. Fuck the hall of fame. The man has a statue in Dublin square.
And we the fans that followed him through the 70s and 80s still love the music.
Thin Lizzy is truly the best rock band ever! There are so many deep tracks... the more you dig the more you will find.
And the more you find the more you dig them. Even in the middle of winter if you put lizzy on its instantly a summer's day all you need is a long cold beer.
so cool how Phil would play these beautiful bass lines and syncopate his relaxed singing style over it so easily. he is so missed
Congats discovering Thin Lizzy. Best band ever. Huge over here in Europe. Phil Lynott (pronounced Lie-not) has also published a couple of poetry books. He is in a class of his own lyric wise. The band is a huge influence on everybody from Metallica to Bon Jovi to Def Leppard to Smashing Pumpkins. There is also a really deep documentary film on Lynott and the band coming this fall. Be sure to check it out. If you really want to know what a proud irishman Phil Lynott was, check out the track Black Rose from the Black Rose album from 1979. I saw Thin Lizzy at Hammersmith Odeon supporting Bachmann Turner Overdrive, who were touring on the strength of You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet. Fifteen minutes into the BTO set the crowd was still chanting "Lizzy....... Lizzy......"
Such a great band, such a great song. You should check out "Opium Trail" and "Bad Reputation" from that album. Phil was so great. Such a tragic loss. I remember the day he died. I was at a Dio concert and first heard it from Ronnie Dio. So many great songs for you to discover now from Thin Lizzy.
Bad reputation is awesome. Definitely needs to be the live version with the amazing drum solo.

Phil was Irish , a big part of Irish life and culture is in pubs. It's not just a bar like here in America , it's a real atmosphere where life really revolves around the pub , you eat there, you bring your kids there and stay all day. It's where contracts are signed and wedding proposals made. It's the town square
As someone who is mixed race and a guitar player, people like Phil Lynott are really good to look up to...I mean minus the drug use
I hope you follow Phil's example and allow your music reflect multiple aspects cultural heritage.

Muchismas gracias for playing this classic Lizzy song. It is soooo tight and so smooth. Lynott had a velvet voice and was a groove master on bass.

Just listened to live and dangerous putting on ufo's strangers in the night on next two of the best live rock albums you'll hear may do iron maiden's live after death later.
Deep cut -- "Dear Heart" specifically, (BBC Bob Harris session) is soulful. "Sitamoia" , (Peel Sessions). Personally, as a lifelong Phil, Lizzy guy, just watching other folks appreciate their legendary stuff, that's a thrill for me!
Please go on with Lizzy. Their catalog is huge. From Irish traditional softer songs to Thunder and Lightning.
Basically their whole Live and Dangerous album is awesome.

Glad you found Thin Lizzy over 2020 and the lockdowns! all the recommendations here are great, so I'll only add one note - not many are recommending their 3rd album, Vagabonds of the Western World. Queen used to listen to that to get in the zone before they went on the stage, and its a fantastic album, almost no missed spots or songs I'd skip.
Completely get you being sad at 6:30, you're right to feel that way about Phil's death. Listening to Vagabonds will make you smile.

Am loving your reaction. I am from a place very near where Phil grew up and my mam is named Phil and almost same age as he would be. She knew him a bit growing up and was at tons of his early gigs. We love Phil here and have a great statue of him in Dublin.

This band is so incredibly good cause they have songs like Maroon 5 and Motorhead at the same album, and they're all great. I miss Lynnot, a true music genius.

Fell in love with Thin Lizzy way back in 78 and still love their music today. Phil made a couple of solo albums on the early 80s. Solo in Soho and The Philip Lynott Album. They include a couple of collaborations with Mark Knopfler from Duke Straits which are pretty different for him. King's Call and Ode to Liberty. You might enjoy a listen - another example of Phil's versatility.
Hey, T. It's cool you're diggin on the Thin Lizzy. Such a great band, and a shame they didn't get the recognition they deserved here in the US. I turned 15 the summer Jailbreak came out but first album and cassette I actually bought was Live and Dangerous in '78. We popped that in the deck of my buds Cal-Look Bug on the way to Huntington Beach and were blown away. So we got all the back catalog and were sure they were gonna make it big here. You prob checked out some of the bad luck as to why. But damn, people seem to be tunin into them now. It's been kind of a slow but steadily growing thing where people hear some of it and wonder whoa-how did we miss this?! That's great, cuz they put together an awesome body of work and really deserve it. Phil goin early like so many others-I dunno. It seems like a lot of times the ones that really have somethin-deep where they mine down in their souls to bring up the gold and the gems that create real art are cursed with too much deep feeling. It can be the breeze that fills your sails and carries you so high, but then cast you down deep in the sea. Its like a double-edged blade, and we all get cut, it's just for them the cut goes deeper. His band, his dreams, his marriage and his health were all goin. It makes me think of the lyrics to an old Rush song-'Losing It', where Neil (RIP) wrote: "Sadder still to watch it die, Than never to have known it, For you-the blind who once could see, The bell tolls for thee..."

A "Thin Lizzy" is a very thinly rolled joint. My wife and I saw Thin Lizzy live about 10 times, they were a great band to see. And yes I'm showing my age, we also saw Queen 5 times. My Oldest daughter blames me for sort of naming our youngest grand daughter 3 years ago. When I held her for the first time I started sing the Thin Lizzy song "Sarah" to her, Phil Lynott wrote that to his own daughter, oops. When I was in the Royal Marine Commandos, we would get back from a posting and all you could hear was "The boys are back in town" coming from all the PA speakers at the Barracks. I still sing Thin Lizzy's "Still In Love With You" to my wife, badly, but she forgives me as we've been married since 1983, on her 18th birthday so I wouldn't forget the date.

Very honorable of you to shoot out the competition. And I just realized Phil reminds me of Can Morrison in his delivery and even the production (hand claps, finger snaps). Was it a sound of the time of was it the same studio? Maybe a mutual inspiration? Any Irish fans know?
Saw them back in the day at Winterland in San Francisco in the mid 70's... On their Jailbreak tour... They opened up for Queen...
Good song.. but yeah it is one of their softer ones. Jailbreak is a bad ass song. Also check out "Do anything you want to (top of the pops version)".. also be sure to check out some live vids.. Phil Lynott had that cool Hendrix like charisma.
It was a very sad day in music history when Phil died. I have a photo from front row center back in '78 that I took at a Thin Lizzy concert that I cherish.

I love your interpretation to this song. it's awesome. and how I'd hope most interpreted it. but this song is actually a song about a heroin addiction. "I should've took that last bus home, But I asked you for a dance" as in a time when he reluctantly went to the drug when he should have just gone to bed. "I always get chocolate stains on my pants" refers to the messy residue heroin produces. sadly the death of the Thin Lizzy front man Phil Lynott was to such abuse in the mid 80's. He had been in a struggle with it for over a decade before it claimed his life. He was one of the most talented musicians to have ever lived. RIP.

When you said “Dancing in the street” it made me think of Van Halen’s cover of that same title. Then I thought you may dig Van Halen’s “Dance The Night Away” from their second album ‘79. It’s also an upbeat song that’s a fun listen.
