- The deep, tidal-scoured entrance channels of our bigger southern estuary systems can be tricky spots to fish at times. Join Starlo and Jo Starling as they show you how to catch fish and squid in these waterways.

Great job guys 👍🎣
Jo is a damn good angler who can hold her own in a vast array of situations - great rod mechanics and body work, Jo!
Spot on!
Georges bay is something special!
Sure is.
Way to go Jo! Oh I can taste that calamari already. Thanks guys..
It was delish!
Great episode mate.
Thanks!
As a point of interest, few people target estuaries in NZ and even fewer with lures, so have it all to myself! Regular catches aren't too different to yours, mainly silver trevally and kahawai/salmon. Snapper put in the occasional appearance. Unfortunately, I can't use ultralight gear as very big trevally and kingfish turn up fairly regularly. It's a shame we don't have flathead in NZ, they look like a lot of fun! Keep up the good work!
Thanks for that. You mightn't have flathead, whiting or bream, but we are a tad jealous of the size of the snapper and kings you get in your estuaries!
Big whoops That is JS Clarke. !!
Very cool !
Cheers!
Enjoyed that one Starlo. I bet the squid were nice. Going for a fish tomorrow morning full moon big tides 😊
Thanks! And good luck!
@@StarloGetsReel ok thanks should get a feed I hope
Starlo just pumping out the quality content! I'm here for it.
Thank you! 🙏👍
G’day Steve. Ever thought of a trip to Nelson’s Bay to have chat with John Stinker Pratt? And a fishing expedition of course. That would be gold. Probably won’t hurt the ratings either. Ps. Loved Exmouth session. I spent weeks there on my lap around in ‘92. PPS. Tell Rog to stop calling all the viewers “ actually “.
Great idea.
Gotta love the silver trevs 👍
For sure.
Great video, love the squid
Lol. The Dirty Squirt, great name for a squid boat indeed! Or, a dodgy kebab van...
🤣 Love it! 👍
blurters are great sashimi as you have said before
Sure are. 👍
Great video Starlo! Got any tips on targeting trevally? I'd love to land my first legal one
Thanks! Trevs love a soft plastic.
@@StarloGetsReel thanks, do you reckon a slow roll works better or adding in hops? Basically what's your go to action of the lure
@@aleg5316 definitely hops.
Great Trevs. Been trying to catch some myself for awhile. Just want to pose a question. I’ve been following yr advice on finesse, finer line fishing. However find myself in a vortex, between that and fishing a bit heavier. I’ve been busted off a lot lately, on 4lb leader. Almost instantly each time just after hookup. The drag no time to engage. Have been fishing since with 10lb. Finding this definitely slows down those bites. I just want a chance to land one of these critters. What should I do?
Yep, 4 is pretty light. I try not to go quite that light if I don’t need to. Six and 8 pound are my “go-to” strengths for most southern estuary work and I’ll go up to 10 when I need to. Don’t forget, 6 pound is 50% stronger than 4 but not much thicker! Hope that helps.
I am finding it really hard to find light (1.5 kg/ 3lb) braid at present. Most places I try to find it stock 6lb or heavier. Very disappointing if manufacturers are going to stop making it, or stockists atop stocking it.
I think it’s more about how they label it. They can pretty much pick any number and put it on there. I have “6 pound” braid here that’s noticeably thinner than another spool of “3 pound” braid… and both probably break at about 10 or 12 pounds! Strengths printed on most lines are largely meaningless, but this is especially true of braid! True diametre is what counts… and that DOESN’T include braid crushed flat between the tight jaws of a micrometer! The best way to pick braid is to pull a metre or two off the spool and feel it. You might find a lot of that six pound stuff is thinner than the old three pound you may have used in the past.
@@StarloGetsReel That is one of the problems, the Fireline I have used for 30 years is impossible to find and I think I have used the last spool I had in reserve. Casting into the backing now, lol. I am going to have to do a bit of experimenting outside the comfort zone lol. Thanks for the advice.
You’ve got a stash of whip baits ? I don’t think they still make them.
Yes, I still have a small, but rapidly dwindling, stash of Whipbaits, Flick Baits and Bugs. Great tails.
Can spot a shimano a mile off, that line roller never lies 😂😂😂
Not with you?
@@StarloGetsReel nah, i use older style daiwa, but the line rollers in a shimano just go all the time, i got sick of replacing them tbh
Fisherpersons paradise
What colour is your squidge
Hmmm. That one has been rattling around my tackle box for ages... Probably Red Rum? To be honest, I don't pay a huge amount of attention to specific colours. I just grab what looks good to me at the time!
Oh, the trevally is on Black Gold.
