I have a confession, when I first watched Yuri on Ice i barely cared about the Vikturi ship. I loved it because of the characters, humor and the competitions. I’m part of the LGBT community and I don’t really like how especially with yaoi how it’s treated like a fetish. I was happy with YOI because it wasn’t overly sexualized and it was a healthy relationship. It wasn’t incest or violent, it was two people loving each other and that was the beauty of Yuri on Ice.
Yui Sakura Well I’m not a gay man, I’m a bisexual female (actually pan but most people don’t know what that is). Anyway, I can’t speak for them but I can speak as part as the community. From what I can tell we don’t hate yaoi or yuri most of us just hate how it’s looked at like more of a fetish. Gay men are real and aren’t something to be looked at by straight girls cause it’s “hot.” Yaoi is made by women for women, that’s why is kinda screwed up. I like YOI cause it’s actual representation rather then something hyper sexualized. It’s about a healthy relationship between two men who love each other. I wouldn’t even call it yaoi, it’s just a love story.
leilaniart Well, just because it’s portrayed more realistically doesn’t mean it isn’t fetishized by Fujoshi anyway lol. I personally think it’s totally fine to think that way, as a huge fan of Yuri (the genre) myself. I think that very anime way of portraying relationships has some charm to it.
The reason why yuri on ice is as popular as it is, is simply that it portrays a realistic, healthy gay relationship, that doesn’t take over the entire plot. Because real relationships don’t take over someone’s entire life like it seems to do in anime, yuri has a life outside of being gay, he’s a figure skater and THATS the main focus. There’s obviously been yaoi anime but they’re never realistic because it’s just akin to fan fiction. If there is an anime that portrays a realistic, healthy, gay relationship then tell me about it. But I can’t even recall a straight relationship in anime that’s portrayed in a realistic light
Or maybe some girls just like seeing two good looking dudes do what ever the fuck they do. I don't care since I enjoy yuri and I like watching two good looking girls do whatever the fuck they do. No hate
Alan Kao completely valid reason to enjoy something. like why criticize anime on being not special while lots of people have different reasons that make one anime special to them
FUCKING EXACTLY!!!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!! I feel like so many people are hating on so many anime just because it was apparently "shit" but they don't dig deeper to see why it would appeal to some other audiences. I mean, I genuinely enjoyed sao not because it was fantastic but the idea of a op protag in a virtual world! Don't know about you but that's pretty cool to me.
I totally agree with you! Yuri on Ice was the first anime I watched that had a healthy and realistic romantic relationship. Not only a healthy gay relationship, but a healthy romantic relationship in general. When it comes to romance in anime/manga (it doesn't matter if is yuri, yaoi, shonen ai, shoujo ai or shoujo) most of times the unrealistic and unhealthy relationships are romanticized. Now I know a few others animes/mangas that portrayed healthy relationships as well. But Yuri on Ice was the first I ever saw do it and became popular because of it.
I think yoi was upraised not because of its exciting relationship but its a realistic relationship. I'd like to see something representing a community that may (key word here mates, may)feel misrepresented more accurate over exciting and that's why I believe it is regarded as highly as it is.
Agreed. A realistic LGBTQ relationship in anime is really boring, tbh. The more Hollywood type romances are extremely far away from what the reality is. YOI just showed two dudes in love. And to some people they got all upset and we're like "this isn't yaoi?!?!!" "Where's the lack of consent and stereotypical sensei and kouhai relationship" Yeah.....real gay guys aren't like that. We're arguably pretty boring. It's not super glamorous and you often can't pick out couples just from a random lineup. There are extremely muscley guys that only want to be fucked and dominated by fat glitter covered feminine dudes with below average dicks. Everyone's different and that's perfectly fine. It's honestly kind of toxic for so many straight women to be so into a INCREDIBLY SPECIFIC and UNREALISTIC depiction of gay relationships. Not just some of us, but MOST of us are not like that, like, at all.
spiderdude2099 - It's not toxic to like yaoi as long as you understand that it has really little to do with real life, it's only fantasies. Also I'm not sure for today's young girls but my generation has been told forever that "domination is hot" (over women of course). Just watch any Harrison Ford movie, for example. He's supposed to be hot and sexy, he makes his move, the girl steps back, says "no", he forces her into a kiss and now she's just melting because she "secretly wanted it all along." Those scenes are not supposed to feel creepy, there made to be sexy and "passionate", and you take them as such. It's really hard not to get influenced by what you see on tv growing up and a lot of romantic scenes in tv shows and movies depict this kind of domination or violence and a general lack of consent. So just like our sense of beauty is shaped from society since our birth, so is what we think "love" or "flirt" is supposed to be. But then you grow up and realize that no, when a guy makes his move and ignores you if you say no, it's not sexy... Still, it's hard to get totally rid of a lesson well learned, so we still feel kinda hot if it's a "dream guy" on paper. (Though I personally prefer my guys in yaoi to be on a more equal footing with fun, bubbly relationships.) ^^
Møca Lykke Yeah that's fair. I think gay or straight we are influenced lot by the media about what "romance" is or looks like. I know not all women or men think any of its real. It's mainly meant to entertain. However, I do think some people take things way too far and start seeing relationships and yaoi undertones in everything. It's really unhealthy for 2 straight male friends to be told by society that any deeply emotional moment between them is "gay" or a "bromance". There's nothing wrong with two straight males being friendly and emotionally open with each other. And unfortunately because people jump to saying stuff like that is "gay" way too easily, they get embarrassed and see it as something to be avoided because unfortunately in today's society, doing something that people call "gay" is seen as negative and something to be avoided. It just further encourages straight men to be emotionally out of touch towards everyone they know.
yoi sure wasnt the first gay anime but it is like the first mainstream, well received anime which contains a not-fetishised-totally-normalised gay relationship. a massive step for _japan_ . disregarding that is pretty dangerous
The problem is it is too ambiguous in the sense that they didn't make it explicit. If we are going for a homosexual relationship, then let's go for it instead some swings here and there
@@cojinmango I don't understand why people are complaining on the ambiguous representation of LGBTQ+ relationship in YOI. First and foremost YOI is a sports anime, it isn't an anime that's centered towards the relationship aspect of the plot. We literally see Katsuki grow as a character on shaping who he is as a figure skater. It doesn't need to be explicit about their relationship at all. Second of all, if the producer actually followed your advice on making it "explicit", safe to say that YOI wouldn't have gained this much attention and you wouldn't even know it existed. YOI would've been put in a time slot like 2 or 3 AM in Japan, because it wouldn't be appropriate for the general audience. The writers had to go out of their way to show LGBTQ+ representation in a famous medium in an otherwise conservative country. I guess they should apologize for not feeding you with enough yaoi content. Heck, YOI is literally in part of the minority that had LGBTQ+ elements in it, that isn't absolute shit in animation, because no big animation company would fund this if there's some conflict in time slots, meaning less profit.
@sofie rossussy @Mango I was honestly confused if they were in a relationship or if the various scenes were a form of fanservice until it was brought to my attention after the show ended. I think it should have been explicit meaning "not vague". I think saying directly "I love you" would have been enough to clear that vagueness for me and some of my friends who were also confused. Of course actions can speak louder than words, and when I thought about it yes their actions are pretty romanticized. But that acknoledgment would solidify those actions even more. But maybe even that would be too much for the general audience.
@@KATinBLACK Representation of the LGBTQ+ in mainstream media is still rather taboo in most Asian countries, and this includes Japan. Tbh I'd also love to see some form of acknowledgement that they are romantically involved, but I can understand why the director chose to go about the show in a roundabout way.
I totally agree with your opinion on Yuri on Ice, The hype made it good but their relationship was lacking. Personally I like Doukyuusei, an anime movie about two male classmates falling in love, a lot better because their relationship is realer. Yuri on Ice was lacking in the representation department and there are better shows with better representation. That might be an unpopular opinion but it's true
I personally really like YoI because the show isn't necessarily focused on Yuri and Viktor's relationship. The core theme of the anime focuses on ice skating first, relationship second, which is really refreshing after seeing some other anime adaptions of yaoi/shounen-ai manga. Anyone can watch YoI even if they don't like male on male relationships because of how subtle but sweet Viktuuri and how it doesn't feel too forced nor does it get in the way of the plot itself. It isn't the greatest anime of all time or anything, in both the romance and sports genres respectively, but it's definitely one of the best shounen-ai anime out there right now. I believe it deserved the attention it received. I thought it was a really beautiful and well produced anime. Of course though, opinions are opinions.
sodium_ ramen indeed the ship was the attractor. Kuroko no Basket is another sport anime with great animation and they didn't have any fan service. It was good and pure sport. What i expect from Yuri on Ice is that SKATING without ANY ROMANCE. It just throw me off after the mid of the series and i decide "oh boi. The fanservice is tingling" and i stop watching from there.
Arianne Riversong First I would like to say that you were modest in certain parts when referring about YoI but the thing is the show could be some much better specially for its core theme which is figure skating, the Yuri and Katsuki relationship could have been tempered a bit too look less cliché and be a well built one. Also the anime wasn't well made in the animation department of you saw some of the freeze frames for the anime. What I meant to say from this little rant of opinion is that YoI did had potential but it's execution did meet up the expectations of all that hype.
That's actually pretty similar to what I thought, after a few episodes the relationship was very subtle, besides, Yuri originally knew him as more of his idol than anything then he suddenly just pops in to train him. Though my train of thought was going more in the direction of it being one of those underdog sports types, granted Yuri was pretty high up in ranks but he took a break, got fat and now wants to try to be THE best, better than Vicktor even. Granted he only just narrowly missed the title to Yurio but he was damn close.
I know this video is almost two years old, but here are my opinions on Yuri on Ice. Yuri on Ice is not a Yaoi. There was nothing sexually explicit about their relationship. Now that that's off the table, I actually liked the representation in the show because it wasn't *the entire purpose of the show.* Victor and Yuri's relationship was kind of a secondary part of the show. It's an anime about men's figure skating... That being said, I agree with a lot about what you said about the show. The show definitely has flaws, and people need to see that!
He only mentioned the gay part and then compared it to yaoi which is stupider. He didn’t mention the music, the damn figure skating, or the character development of Yuuri and Yuri.
I'm just so sad, because no one talks about Doukyuusei movie :( In my opinion, it's revolutionary anime in BL genre. Yes, YOI is good because of the relationship's representation (it looks very natural), but OH MY GOD how much BETTER is Doukyuusei with its simple, though beautiful setting and just GORGEOUS romantic atmosphere! Argh...((
lol Yuri on Ice was certainly not the first BL anime I've watched but it was the first I've seen that portrayed a healthy same-sex relationship and had a plot outside of them being a couple. I used to watch a lot of yaoi OVAs back in like 6th/7th grade and almost all of them featured rape or some other form of abuse be it physical or emotional. Even when the relationship between the male leads was tame at best there was always some other third party gay man to attempt to abuse one of them. Yes, YOI was cliche and cheesy at times but it was still different than what was previously being done in the BL genre. If you were willing to admit that an anime about a pedophillic, incestuous, "gay" relationship is a better anime with better representation that YOI then you've clearly got an underlying bias against it... probably due to the fans and the fact that it's popular. Like.... what the fuck do you as STRAIGHT man have to say about gay rep when actual gay men have praised YOI for what it had done ajdjdkasds
You’re missing the point of the relationship between Viktor and Yuri. The show focused on how they helped each other grow as people (Viktor becoming more mature and considerate and Yuri becoming more confident and passionate about ice skating) and because of this, their relationship was able to blossom at a healthy rate from strangers into a romance. You might have seen the relationship as “boring” or not special because it didn’t have the usual fetishization cliches used in typical yaoi animes (ex: forcing yourself upon someone else) but I think that that’s what made it a breath of fresh air for the LGBT community. Just my thoughts as a bi who loved the show’s portrayal of the romance and how they put the characters’ development before their relationships’
Looks like people still don't understand that Yuri on Ice is not yaoi. Yes, Viktor and Yuuri are gay for each other, but that's doesn't mean their romance was like super importance to the main plot. Kubo just wanted to show a world without homophobia.
Darius Jones Its not yaoi because there weren't any sexual scenes of any sort during it. It didn't show anything private either. They never kissed, only once but it didn't even show because it was covered up. It's a sports anime. The romance in yuri on ice is subtle and a background item because the sports part is the most important part. That's why it's not categorized as a yaoi anime
It's shounen ai all right My problem with the series is probably the fact that it changes direction out of nowhere. I enjoy the first 2 episodes because it seems like a legit good ice skating series (and I'm huge fans of sport anime), but the sport becomes sub in the end? It's like Ginban Kaleidescope, lol
Well... The producers and creators of YOI actually said in interviews that, in the world they created for YOI, homophobia doesn't exist, because YOI is a ANIME, not a real life show who need to show us a gay pairing suffering for being gay. And no, YOI isn't shonen-ai either. YOI is a spokon anime with a gay protagonist, not a yaoi/shonen-ai anime with sports.
Citrus the anime had a lot of rape and noncon, as well as Strawberry Panic the anime. Yuri on Ice really was the first anime I saw with an LGBT couple that didn’t have some serious noncon.
i would’ve been fine with the yoi opinion if you didn’t recommend an incest anime and yeah, yoi definitely isn’t special, but it was very fascinating how they incorporated something like ice skating to make it like an aspect of a romantic relationship. and imo, i wasn’t even that invested in the ship. the art, the music, and the other characters are also part of why yuri on ice was special to some of the fans
my female friend is a big fan of Shounen, she even cosplays one of the characters from Tokyo Ghoul, idk what character she was playing. meanwhile, i'm a boy, and i can't stand high levels of bloody and gory anime, and i'm a like shoujo anime instead of shounen anime, i got no shame
Idk i felt a bit uncomfortable listening to a straight person determine what's a good representation of a good lgbt+ relationship but that's prob just me being sensitive I guess. I liked Citrus for its art, etc, but I do not think that's a good representation of a girl x girl relationship at all. Also, it's not just fangirls? I read actual gay people say that they felt like the representation in YOI was pretty accurate. OFC I don't think you're homophobic, but I don't really think this was a suitable topic for you to touch upon. The thing I liked about YOI is that it (imo) displayed a normal relationship. That's all the lgbt+ representation I want. Other yaoi shows become to sexual that it's a bit uncomfortable to watch. There are so many animes that are action or mystery, but that have a bit of romance in it too, but of course it's a straight relationship. I'm glad that YOI did that but with representation. LGBT+ couples are just couples. Just like how straight couples are just couples. OFC there are other manga and anime that did it better, but YOI still did it well imo.
(Is saying justjess or they as to not assume gender) Arwen Luna , justjess was being hella respectful about their opinion and didn't say what Joey can or can't talk about. They only said they personally were uncomfortable with it and that it could be just them being sensitive. It's people who have sticks up their asses, Arwen, that attack those giving their opinion in a fucking respectful manner that needs to "Stop with the fucking policing." because "It reaches truly horrific conclusions when allowed unchecked." since those who try respectfully giving their opinions are met with shit like this and get discouraged from commenting and giving their opinion and that just leaves the trolls to troll each other and discourages people to be more open about how they feel about things in a positive and constructive way.
I’m late to this rodeo but I liked YOI for the representation of Yuri’s anxiety and how not only Victor but his family and friends helped him with that. I saw so much of myself in Yuri that I laughed the hardest in my life at a show. I also cried the hardest in my life at a show. The relationship Yuri and Victor had you may debate is cliche but the BL community struggles a lot with unhealthy relationships in their stories and AT LEAST Victor was non-abusive and supportive of Yuri in his quest to be the best ice skater he could be. You don’t have to like YOI but I’ll be damned if I sit by let you compare it to Papa to Kiss in the dark. Gravitation was my first BL anime and I also adore it but the relationship is also unhealthy in that one so yeah..... I get your point Joey, sometimes things are hyped because of the gay and I feel that with some comics and/or manga I read but YOI as far as I’m concerned is special and I will sing it praises until my dying breath.
Honestly, I watched Yuri on ice for the beautiful ice skating. Damn, the animation on that was on point. The songs, ah I fell in love with them in that instance. It even got to the point that I started ignoring the main story elements and relationships and just got to the beautiful dances which were presented. There was a point in time when I didn't know the names of some of the more important characters (I kid you not, I didn't know that Yuri and Yurio shared the same name until episode 8 or something. I'm an Asian female and I get that this show was supposed to be a bunch of beautiful men dancing for young girls, but I dream of seeing both girls and boys performing those BEAUTIFUL, HEAVENLY dances as well. The costume for girls have sooo much potential.
big ups... the light light BL in YOI felt more like a bit of an afterthought.. it's far from the genre, but I think it did a lot of good for normalization
I am honestly so confused, how the hell is 'Papa to Kiss in The Dark' better in any way than Yuri on Ice? Like wtf? I'm sorry Joey, I usually agree with you, but you lost me there. And in my opinion, Gravitation was a lot more boring and forgettable than YoI as well. I haven't read the Citrus manga, so I guess I can't argue much there, but I can at least say the anime was nowhere near as good as YoI as far as LGBTQ+ representation goes. I also haven't read Banana Fish's manga, but although the anime is really good IMO, their relationship, if you could even call it that, is far from YoI standards.
Firstly, he never said Yuri on Ice was bad, only that it wasn't as good as everyone made it out to be. Second, he suggested it as a joke, and even admitted that it was a guilty pleasure. Stop purposefully misconstruing people's words to make their opinion sound worse than it actually is just because you disagree with them.
does joey have seen yuri on ice completely? cause it doesn’t look like he has watch it completely. cuz boi, papa to kiss in the dark better the yoi??????
Joey doesn't give a fuck holy shit I didn't expect him to mention that at all. The uke is like 15 years old and the seme is like twice that age and he thinks it's better? LMAO
Yuri on ice made me actually feel so warm and give me the feeling of falling in love I never had that before except in real life (I actually only watched it 2 days ago ahaha and I just watched it because lots of people praise it I don't love it because they're LGBT ever since Yuri's speech about love I fell in love I did not cry like I usually do in anime but it gave me a whole different feeling and i'm glad that this show got to do that)
YOI is one of my favourite animes atm, but I do have to admit there's something very plain and very average about it. I loved Yuuri's character bc he goes through big character development and I think that's really inspiring. He's sweet and talented and I like him a lot. Viktor on the other hand...there's something artificial about him. I do like him, but there's something very unlikeable and off-putting about his character. Anyway, Banana Fish (NOT a yaoi ffs) is a show that portrays a romantic relationship b/t two men that goes beyond the physical. Like I imagine Ash to be the kinda dude who, if somebody asked him what does he love about Eiji, he wouldn't say _his sparkling eyes. His beautiful face. His bangin body_ or some shit like that that you find in yaoi. He'd probably say he loves Eiji's fearlessness, willingness to learn, kindness, and ability to judge somebody on the basis of their merit. And I have no doubt Eiji would say he loves Ash's leadership skills, complete selflessness, and honesty. My point is that Ash and Eiji don't need to kiss or have sex for their relationship to be romantic. It's the way they check in on each other, communicate with each other, listen to each other, help each other out, and understand each other. They would die for each other. They stay loyal to each other to the very end. *THAT IS FUCKING LOVE.* For these boys, a physical relationship isn't necessary. In fact it hardly exists. But that only enhances the emotional connection they share, and that's why I find Banana Fish to be one amazing, fantastic show that portrays romance without it necessarily being romantic. Doukyuusei is also incredible. It's slow, passionate, sweet, heart-warming, and profound. It's like an obligatory romance--the characters come together because they're required by the laws of nature to. They compliment each other. They're nervous. They're unsure. They're realistic. They don't fall in love quick, but when they're in the slew of things, they are in the fucking slew of things. It's gorgeous and I love it. Rant over, send tweet
AWMdiva499 your description of banana fish and asheiji perfectly captured everything i’ve ever wanted to say about them. ash and eiji’s relationship will personally remain my forever favorite (like, not just in anime or manga, but across all forms of media and even in real life relationships), i really haven’t seen any other beyond-friendship relationships like theirs that doesn’t rely on a physical connection. i think yoi did a good job at portraying a mlm relationship without sexualizing it (unlike all other yaoi anime do), but... for me, ash and eiji’s relationship is... on a whole different level. that thing you said about them, that if they were to compliment each other it would be on personality traits and not physical features, it’s true and it just shows how “platonic” bonds can be just as fulfilling and beautiful as relationships with physical bonds. they are truly, in all aspects, soulmates, their souls are one, they’re spiritually connected, and that’s what soulmates really mean. that’s also what “platonic” relationships actually mean, as the word was founded and first defined by plato, but people just use t nowadays to label mere friendships. i wish i had a relationship like theirs’ irl but it’s never gonna happen, sigh...
The problem is the fujoshis sexualizing Yuri and Viktor soooo much. They have to understand that there’s more to it than just a gay anime. I personally like Yuri On Ice because it’s the only gay anime I’ve seen without much sexualization, and I don’t really like yaoi... idk why. Might check what you recommended. EDIT: OKAY OKAY YURI ON ICE WAS MUCH BETTER THAN PAPA TO KISS IN THE DARK I WILL NOT TOLERATE PEDOPHILIA Okay, I really liked Yuri On Ice because it had no sex. It doesn’t fetishize gay men. Papa to kiss in the dark... ugh.
On behalf of what I imagine to be a sizeable portion of the LGBTQ anime community: Yuri on Ice is average. Don't be blind, people. Just read Banana Fish like a civilised person...
I am sorry but I have read many yuri manga and I HIGHLY disagree that Citrus portrays a healthy relationship.. it evolves sexual harassment and no concent. Yuzu tries way too hard and Mei doesn’t do anything at all. If you want a good yuri relationship prism is a good one to start.
There is always some new fucking Girl in the way making any kind of normal relationship between them like impossible. I mean they literally make it impossible for themselves anyway
Sure, it does involve sexual harassment and sexual assault at a lot of times throughout the series, however, the reasons as to why those encounters happen in the first place does make sense.
Yuri on ice was a really well animated sports anime representing an untapped sport, and had a really nice soundtrack. The relationship wasn't that great though.
Yeah. I so agree with you @xYumixo. I am a HUGE fan of Fairy Tail. When he said that could be a worse one I almost threw my phone across the room at my window. There's so much detail and the plot is so good. And there's so much stuff that happens, it's just a really good anime, Sword Art Online too.
i'm a female and fairy tail is literally my religion personally I think it's a great anime but if you think otherwise I respect that really don't understand those people who go to war with someone else because they don't like an anime they like great video
The whole thing with going to war with someone is literally because they think "My opinion is more right than your opinion", which is hilarious to watch as over time, people pull stuff out of their ass and try to describe something subjective as fact.
It's good to see some more level-headed people like yourself. Personally, I didn't like Fairy Tail, but it's not like I want to start wars over fandoms and talking trash to people that do find it enjoyable. At most I would question your tastes and avoid or forget the discussion. However, I will never relate to fangirls and fanboys that feel like they are personally violated because of someone else's opinions.
Personally, when I began watching Yuri on Ice no one really knew about it yet and then halfway through watching it, it became super popular and everyone watched it. It got to the point where it wasn’t fun for me to watch it anymore because everybody else ruined the experience for me. To be honest, the plot of the anime isn’t that special. The graphics are why I watched it to begin with.
Luke Chang graphics are usually game based. the word "artstyle" or "animation" would be more suitable. (p.s no i am not trying to be an asshole grammar nazi. my grammar isn't the best anyways. I am just trying to help lmao)
alien _ god Thanks for letting me know. I actually didn’t even realize the difference until I thought about it. You learn something new everyday I guess *Thumbs up*
I never really liked Yuri on Ice!!! simple cause I don't think it's a great representation of figure skating, but I think the pull of the show was the fact that it was just... calm and chill, it was never treated as something weird or different that it was two men, and you can argue that the shows you mentioned, especially gravitation shows very unhealthy relationship dynamics, plus both papa to kiss in the dark and gravitation has very unlikeable main characters, where Yuri on Ice is fairly inoffensive
My opinion on Yuri On Ice is that the gay representation was pretty good and the ice skating was satisfying to watch. I didn’t like parts of it, but don’t even lie to me, the opening was amazing
I think the point everyone misses is it's not an anime based on relationship of Victor and Yuri. It was an sport anime with a gay-ish couple in it. And opening is AMAZING!!!!!!!!
I think it’s more like: 90% of comments: people who disagree with Yuri on ice 5% of comments: people wondering why he likes Papa to kiss in the dark 5% of comments: other
@@YetMorePlaying Super Lovers was done right though and I'm not just talking about their *ehem heavily intimate scenes but also the characters perspectives, certain conditions of the relationship to be considered and issues of the said questionable relationship between the two (non-blood related) couple; plus from the very beginning it was already stated by the other party what kind of relationship they want from the other person while fully acknowledging the expected consequences to be had and limits needed to remembered. They felt a lot more like two mature self-aware individuals trying to properly make it work than most couples.
@@persephonepomegranate9652 wanna know the sad thing about boku no pico and that whole trilogy of yikes there actually really well animated, and actually really well written and even voice actors are really really good
I think the part about Yuri on Ice that people liked was that it didn't adhere to that uncomfortable yaoi trope of dubious consent where it's like, there's a dom and a sub and the sub gets borderline raped. If you need an example, Sekaiichi Hatsukoi had this problem and it was really uncool. Yuri and Viktor were just kinda .... in a relationship and the show treated it like it was normal. That's literally it. It kinda just seems like that normalized vibe made people happy, it's as simple as that.
Alannah I think graviation had rape (or almost rape), but it involved only one person (the raper was unrelated, and the other person of the couple came to help him). Shukisho also didn't have it, but... still... splited personality isn't for anyone. Betrayel knows my name also has nothing to do with rape. They don't even kiss (thoigh it's obious there's something) So yeah, there are more.
Somehow, I just realize that fact (Yuri on Ice doesn't have the noncon/dubcon rape thing like almost all of bl manga/anime). Thank you. You have opened my eyes lmao
Yuri on Ice was far from being my first "shounen-ai" type anime, (I've been a fujoshi for more than a decade) but the reason I still found it kinda special and different was the way the "romance" was "nothing special." It wasn't the main focus of the story, it felt quite casual and there wasn't any real drama around it, type "oh my god, but he's a man, I can't, we shouldn't, no...anh~"... Also no one in the background is going "oh my god, but they're men, they can't, they shouldn't, no... eew". It was quite refreshing. But I think it's "cute with a lot of flaws", not OHMYGAWD BEST ANIME OF THE MILLENIUM!! So I would agree with "too much hype" and "fangirls need to chill."
as a lesbo, the representation of just their cute n warm relationship was great. it was too hyped n i hate that fangirls were just like obsessing over it for the wrong reasons, but im still glad it got the attention
I honestly liked it because the whole ice skating thing was awesome to me. I’ve never watched an anime about ice skating. It’s the ice dancing that won me over.
Exactly.I loved the animation in the ice skating and the songs won my heart(especial the song about agape, sorry I don't remember the whole name).I found it very interesting actually and I liked Yuri and Viktor's healthy relationship.
I liked the show, but it's frustrating that the story was so rushed. It could have been so much better if they had taken their time with each competition instead of trying to cram everything into 12 episodes.
Apart from the LGBTQ part of YOI, I just appreciate that it’s one of the only stories that tell real figure skating stories (which is why I liked it because I skate). Like other things are like “I’ve never skated before this but I loved it and then I skated for like ten minutes and I can do a double flip, wow!” And YOI was real and was like “I can do a quad toe but my quad sal is sketchy af. But now nearly a year later my sal and toe are strong and my quad flip is pretty good for only learning it for like eight months!” If you don’t like the LGBTQ representation let’s appreciate the figure skating accuracy that no other media that I’ve seen has done well
I agree with you 100%. The reason i watched that show was because of the figure skating story/theme than the yaoi factor. Also i was extremely fascinated by the fact that so many of the characters on the show were sort of like the actual figure skaters and that for the animation and sound the figure skaters recorded those noises and choreographed it. its my guilty pleasure anime after-all.
I actually love Yuri on Ice for the story, the characters, the evolution. I think the whole theme of figure skating and high level competition interesting, and liked the fact that Yuri isn't the typical overly powerful undestructable men affected by nothing that we see everywhere. I could relate to him. As for the Yuri/Victor part, it wasn't even central to the story. It wasn't exceptionally unusual, but that's why it was great - it was just healthy, and realistic. I'm not LGTBQ, but it felt good to watch a healthy relationship instead of the usual funked up ones with two highly unstable characters - even if the later is more "exiting" on TV.
Anas S my problem with the show was that it was so overhyped and basically shun out every other good series because a good portion of the fanbase were like “OMFG SO HOT BL OMGGG.”
the thing is, like you said, the yaoi part isn’t even the focus, but people did overhype it when the yoi had a lot of other good qualities throughout the season
Nice to see someone isn't just hating on it or watching it only because of the gay stuff. I honestly can't watch an anime about ice skating because, but I don't hate it because I understand why people would like it
"there's better animes that represent same sex relationships better, here is some recommendations!!" Me: oh? like no. 6? doukyuusei maybe? "Papa to kiss in the dark" Me: wait...... what the hELL
tbh n6 wasn't that good. i enjoyd it and liked nezumi's and shion's(if i remember their names right lol) relationship but yuri on ice is still better that n6
Here's the thing about YoI's relationship - the POINT was not to make it special, or make it stand out, but to rather show that the relationship between two guys can progress very normally and typically (shoujo cliches withstanding). And even then, to me, the focus of the show was still the sport itself. Yes there are two canonically gay characters there. Yes they got together. But its still a story about a skater on the brink of retirement making a comeback with the help of a coach who just so happens to be the person he idolises. (Note: YoI is primarily a sports anime. Not Yaoi/Shounen-ai. Not Romance. SPORTS.)
The main attraction of yuri on ice for me was the character development and the challenges yuri faced, also how yuri realized he wasn’t alone, and victor really did help with that. For me, even though I personally really liked the relationship in it, I loved the development even more.
And I loved the skating routines too. I related a lot to Yuri’s inner struggle to calm down and do his best in competitions, I’ve faced plenty of situations like that :D I thought it was really cool that the characters were based off of actual international figure skaters. And the relationships for me were an interesting detail in the story, but not the main focus for sure.
Papa to kiss in the dark as a "good representation of an lgbt relationships".... was a joke right? A show were.. SPOILERSWARNING: where a plot point is the guys angst over whether or not he's not committing incest/pedophilia with his real father is a reason for him to be upset?!?! thats a joke right???
I hope so. YOI's LGT+ appeal is how natural and how little of a detail they made Yuri and Viktor's BL was. I won't call it yaoi since it is a pure and non-sexual romance.
Have you seen/read Gravitation? I mean, wow, emotional manipulation galore. Apparently, the mutually consensual relationship in YOI isn't considered interesting because the characters don't go uber-angsty.
100% agree my dude. I know that show is SO FUCKING BAD and sometimes frustrating to watch but I still enjoyed the first season on some level. It is still fun to shit on though lol.
I actually was avoiding Yuri On Ice because eeh, I was more of a shounen person but when I watched it last january, I learnt that I needed a bit of vanilla in my life. Legit cried because of the dog.
Jane Rain No one honestly cares if you’re part of the LGBT except for other members, and constantly telling people that you’re part of that community like that’s all you were about really does annoy people, not because they hate gays or bi’s or lesbians or trans, it’s because that’s all you ever talk about no one wants to talk about the same subject for the rest of their life
Same here! Honestly, I do like Yuri on Ice, just mostly for the side characters, the interaction/character dynamics between the characters but not for the Victor×Yuri ship. And No. 6 is pretty good! I loved it! I really enjoyed the way the relationship builds/develops between the main characters while they don't neglect the story and mystery for the sake of the relationship, nor do they make the female "love rival" (Safu) a hateful person just because she likes one of the main characters (Shion). Sure, she have parts where she could be disliked but overall, she is a affectionate person who cares deeply about the ones she love.
if people only focus on the gay part of YOI doesnt that make it a mediocre anime at best? The gayness of an anime shouldnt be the only part that makes a show good. In that case, any crappy show with two guys kissing would be considered good.
You make a good point but YOI is more than just being gay. It's just the fandom memeing about it so much, well..."half-memeing" because it is very much not far from the truth but still the point still stands that YOI is more than what the fandom jokingly say it is.
The reason is I love Zero Two but I also think that Darling in The Franxx is an awful show. People always think that's contradictory and don't seem to really care about that opinion. Thus I think its an unpopular opinion. I can say that for many other characters as well.
So here's the thing... Yaoi has always had a very strong rape culture, which a lot of people are sick of. I think people were just finally happy to see a yaoi about two guys who genuinely fall in love, and not just because the uke got Stockholm syndrome. Sure, it's not the first of it's kind that did that, but pair the cute relationship with men who ice skate, great music, and a beautiful opening animation, and the fans (Including myself) go wild. The fact that you would think an anime about incest represents the LGBT community better is a little ridiculous. Yuri!!! On Ice might not be the best representation either, but I'm damn positive that it's better than Papa To Kiss In The Dark, or Citrus. Both of which I have seen.
What about Yarichin bitch club, no rape, doesn’t pretend it’s something else than it is, just straight sex 😂 (soon getting an OVA) Ten count, fucking amazing. No rape, gonna get an anime adoptation. hitorijime my hero, the age difference is meh but overall it’s nice. No rape. Then we could go on, but yeah overall it’s a strong rape culture. Especially in the omega verse series.
Ten count seemed kind of rapey to me because black haired dude kept touching red haired dude even after he kept saying stop... that was towards the beginning of their relationship
Agreed - As much as I love Yuri On Ice, it could have been represented a little bit better, there are still scenes where I question Viktor's actions in which NO ONE in this comment section has mentioned that I've seen so far. But yeah at least it's better than Citrus and Papa To Kiss In The Dark o.o Hopefully there will be a more wholesome anime with lgbt representation in future with no nudity, and no fetishy rape kinda thing - something that aint NSFW to summarise it. Apparently Doukyuusei is good but haven't got around to watching it since it's a movie. Hate my attention span sometimes.
26:30 That's definitely not true, at least in my case. I've watched a lot of Yaoi before watching Yuri on Ice and I can say with certainty that Yuri on Ice is up there as one of the best. I think what appeals to a lot of people, at least to me, is the way the relationship is presented in comparison to many other LGBTQ themed anime. Yuri on Ice portrays a healthy, un-fetishized relationship between two people unlike many of the other LGBTQ themed anime that have elements of abuse, both physically and mentally, incest and over-sexualisation.
@@viki7268 Yeah, true. Probably should have worded that differently. It's just that, in this video, Joey was comparing Yuri on Ice to a lot of yaoi. I was just trying to get my point across that Yuri on Ice is better than a lot of those.
Scarlette Chanelle so true. Most people actually really like the anime for everything it is. The fact that they had a healthy relationship (gay or not) was just an added bonus. The relationship had very little to do with the anime itself but was still amazing. But the whole story was just amazing and inspiring and you can never forget that absolutely beautiful opening!
Why is the focus for Yuri on Ice on the LGBTQ factor and not that it's about ice skating? That's what I enjoyed it for. The inner demons the characters faced. The moving music. The motivations and goals that drove the characters to competitive figure skating. Maybe the hate comes from getting stuck on one aspect of it instead of enjoy it as a whole?
Not gonna lie, my brother got me to watch it and afterwards I was like "That was barely shonen Ai, that was just a cool sportsanime" Also JJ should've won
Yeah, it gets pretty annoying when people just slap their dicks all over the place and act as if that's what the show's all about when they support it so much.
The thing is, Yuri on Ice isn’t classified as yaoi or shounen-ai and it’s not based on ugly stereotypes like incest, pedophilia or sexual harassment (Citrus, Papa). The relationship between Yuri and Victor was showered as equal and loving without any sexual content which is also common for most of the shows that includes LGBT couples. It was special because sport animes don’t include any LGBT couples especially within the main protagonists. The development of their relationship might’ve veen a little bit cliche but who cares, it was a good, healthy development and as a LGBT person I really appreciate that.
This is exactly how I feel about it. It's special because it didn't follow the tropes that tend to haunt same sex relationships in anime and manga. Sometimes nothing special is exactly what you need to make it special.
I like when shows (anime or not) make a couple gay and don't even mention it, that's normalizing. We don't need parades, pride days, SPECIAL events... we just need to normalize what is natural. And Yuri on Ice did that GREAT. :3
I will agree that Yuri On Ice isn't special in regards to the lgbtq+ representation. What's unique about this show is that it doesn't CENTER around the relationship like many yaoi and yuri shows, it's simply a sub-story that affects the main story. I'll give an example: Love Stage is about a guy who fell for another guy thinking it was a girl and the story revolves around that, with Izumi's dream of being a mangaka kinda in the background. Yuri On Ice is mainly about Yuri's growth as an ice skater with the more romantic parts being quite subtle and not really the main focus. That's pretty much normalizing lgbt relationships, which is something few shows, anime or not, do. Other than that, the animation, music and characters are all enjoyable. Yeah, it's not the best at representing, but it damn does the job of normalizing gay relationships.
Kathryn Kiefer well, that happens too. Some people are more into the romantic side of a show, that's why shipping exists in every single fandom. The story of Yuri On Ice is simple and inspiring, so finding interest in other parts of the show makes sense.
OrbitalForce YT 1. Because straight couples are normal as is, aren't they? 2. It would make no sense in the story if Viktor was a girl for example. Male and female ice skating competitions happen at different times so it would make no sense for Viktor not to compete. 3. Hot Spring scene.
Ash Hanok Lol same bro. I've actually watched all the yaois he recommended heads up if you go out to watch papa to kiss in the dark yoi is still better. Gravitation though is really good and i recommend that 100%! 😁
I don't exactly hate YOI, but I agree with Joey; there are better yaoi and yuri anime/manga/even doujins out there. YOI was just very heavily hyped compared to the others.
Doukyuusei is outstanding and I hope you get the chance to watch/review the film! It deserves much more popularity than it received and is probably the best BL out there (unique art and animation, quirky personalities that deviate slightly from established tropes, and it's lighthearted, sweet, comedic) 💕
L10 F0T14 I couldn’t even really get into Citrus. It wasn’t that interesting and I actually totally forgot I started that until I watched this lol. But with Yuri on ice, I was watching it when it first came out and I was super excited for the next episode and was looking forward to it. I had my friend update me when she saw a new episode come out. Yuri on ice had my full attention when I put it on and I would sing and/or dance to the opening. It was very enjoyable
@@amberb.6395 Same here! I've been a huge fan of YOI for years and because it was fully released when I watched it I just binged it over a week easily but with Citrus I got three episodes in and,,, dropped it. YOI in general is a great anime but citrus is,,, kinda garbage NGL,,,
L10 F0T14 totally agree. Yuri on ice actually excited me from the moment it started. I swear it’s that opening lol. But yeah, I think I got maybe 2 episodes in on Citrus before I dropped it. It really want that interesting. Yuri on ice just has something there that captures your attention and the story keeps it there
While I agree that Yuri on Ice is not the most interesting example of a gay relationship in anime, I think that the reason the LGBTQ+ community were so happy about it was due to the fact it was one of few examples of a healthy LGBTQ+ relationship in anime. It's one of the few that show it in a show that isn't primarily romance, in a sub contextual way. As a member myself, and a yaoi/yuri fangirl, I have watched/read nearly all your recommended and a lot of them don't display healthy relationships, albeit being very entertaining and good. For example, Citrus shows rape and incestuous themes in the anime and overall doesn't display a gay relationship in a positive light, and Papa to Kiss in the Dark shows similar themes. I feel the main appeal is that the relationship IS boring and subduded, because so many yaoi/yuri shows make the gay theme the main aspect like it's this big thing, and Yuri on Ice normalized it. The main theme was Ice Skating, with Yuri and Viktor's relationship being an undertone in the story (even though fangirls undid that last aspect). So while I agree the show as a whole isn't 'revolutionary' or 'the best show ever', it still is a big step in representation, even if it's cliche' and uninteresting, because how many shows have you seen with an underlying straight relationship with a main focus on the story, without the show being in and of itself a romance anime compared to lgbtq+ relationships? I'm sure there are some, there just not nearly as prevalent. Doukyuusei is a great representational anime but it IS a romance. So, while YOI not the best gay show, it's still a big, normalizing step for our community, as a lot of queer people feel. Anyways, personally as a member of the LGBTQ+ community and I think I can speak for a lot of us we don't hate you joey, there will be no war as your opinions are valid, and this comment is just mine. Loved your video as always
Abigail Lusk bless this comment seriously.. while I agree that YOI had its flaws and might have been cliche, it depicted a healthy, consenting relationship that developed slowly over time which unfortunately is quite rare in Yaoi series. The anime that Joey recommends in this video all have a kind of noncon and abusive vibe (maybe not gravitation but I watched it years ago so I can't remember orz) which is a recurring theme in a lot of BL/yuri so in terms of LGBTQ+ representation I definitely wouldn't place them higher than YOI. I 100% recommend Doukyuusei for a great representation and beautiful heart warming story!
I think the purpose of a Yaoi/Yuri anime is literally just to have “gay” in it; No good plot and no good characters. I’m aromantic but I know what’s a good and healthy relationship.
While I do agree with your statement i do NOT like it when people claim they can speak for me just because I am LGBT does not mean I hold the same opinions as while It is refreshing to see a gay relationship in this light it’s just one of the things I dislike about the community because people see us as a community which implys we all hold The same values and opinions while I see us as a demographic sorry for the rant it’s just a annoyance of mine and is not meant to you personally
As a slightly sex-repulsed asexual, I enjoyed it because they didn't sexualize it. The relationship was a wholesome fluff that was dancing around in the background of an overarching ice skating plot. Honestly, to this day, I'd still like to argue that it's possible Yuri was a homoromantic (or biromantic) asexual. And just the fact that headcanon at least somewhat made sense to me was awesome for me. Especially because when things started to get a little more serious in his relationship, he would be freaking out and going NOPE NOPE NOPE right along with me. tl;dr I like their relationship because it was boring and never got too deep or sexual or sensual.
People need to stop thinking of Yuri on ice as “that gay anime about ice skating” and more like “that ice skating anime that the main characters happends to be gay”
The main characters of something never happen to be anything. The authors create with intention. They could've made the characters straight if they wanted to, and still told a beautiful love story. They made the characters gay because they wanted to, it's not something that "just so happened to be". It was a relationship portrayed well and without baiting, but it was still intentional.
As a yuri fan, I was a bit taken aback when Joey said that Citrus is a good LGBT representation, because it's far from it (though I do agree that the manga is actually good). There's MUCH BETTER LGBT/Yuri representation such as *Bloom Into You* (manga, with upcoming anime in Fall), *Asagao to Kase-san* (manga with a recent and a really good OVA), *After Hours* (manga), *Aoi Hana* , *Comic Girls* and heck, even *Yuru Yuri* . It's kinda a similar case with YOI, it's one of the more popular yuri but that doesn't mean it's a good representation.
I love kase-san! And true what he recommended isn’t the best, especially for lgbt rep, but there’s nothin wrong with people likin it. I know people like problematic relationships but I hope they understand they aren’t the best rep
perlen omg YES I love bloom into you so fucking much it’s legit my favorite manga. And asagao San to kase San had such a nice ova and defitky had enough content for a 10 episode anime if they FUCKIG WANTED TO MAKE IT
How exactly does Papa to Kiss in the Dark "do the LGBT thing so much better"? I mean they are father and son... Still I totally agree otherwise. There are way better yaoi series, and as far as I am concerned Yuri on Ice is closer to a sports anime than a yaoi. I mean have you seen literally any other sports anime? I swear they all have mild homoerotic undertones.
As a gay kid, Yuri on Ice is special to me. I know it's not the first or best gay series, it's the most mainstream and accessible one. I also find it funny and cute and I like its story.
The Queen of Happiness you’re right, but it’s gay. yuri on ice also isn’t BL/yaoi/shounen ai but most people label it as “yaoi” because it’s gay. whether that’s right or wrong the word yaoi is mostly used to describe gay mlm anime...
b C it’s stated by the author that Ash and Eiji are indeed in love, but not sexual... the reason is Ash is too tired of sex. I mean who doesn’t after all trauma he’s going through 😔 it’s stated numerous time on the show how much they love each other (heck, both are ready to die for each other). It’s true even until the last scene it’s never stated they are lovers (Ash said he’s enough with the feel of befriend with Eiji without really being his friend). But then again... their love is so pure, they are practically soulmate 😭💕

It wasn’t incest or violent, it was two people loving each other and that was the beauty of Yuri on Ice.
leilaniart
I agree
Same here I cared mostly about yurio
leilaniart wait don't gay people hate yaoi tho
Joey: I didn't like the relationship
Fangirls: *gasp*
Joey:papa to kiss in the dark

Papa to Kiss in the Dark is amazing. lol

The Fox Laboratory but why tho. Gay is gay.
Shrek is an anime. A dream come true.
thank god Cory in the House wasn't animated then! xD sheesh 9_9
Noooooooo coryyyy
Yea... a dream"works" came true
Shrek best anime.
GIVE THIS MAN A MEDAL!!!
I think yoi was upraised not because of its exciting relationship but its a realistic relationship. I'd like to see something representing a community that may (key word here mates, may)feel misrepresented more accurate over exciting and that's why I believe it is regarded as highly as it is.
true
Agreed. A realistic LGBTQ relationship in anime is really boring, tbh. The more Hollywood type romances are extremely far away from what the reality is. YOI just showed two dudes in love. And to some people they got all upset and we're like "this isn't yaoi?!?!!" "Where's the lack of consent and stereotypical sensei and kouhai relationship"
Yeah.....real gay guys aren't like that. Not just some of us, but MOST of us are not like that, like, at all.
spiderdude2099 real relationships don't tend to be super interesting and that's what they went for.
spiderdude2099 - It's not toxic to like yaoi as long as you understand that it has really little to do with real life, it's only fantasies.
Thank you 🙌
The problem is it is too ambiguous in the sense that they didn't make it explicit.
@sofie rossussy @Mango
I was honestly confused if they were in a relationship or if the various scenes were a form of fanservice until it was brought to my attention after the show ended.

Yuri on Ice was lacking in the representation department and there are better shows with better representation. That might be an unpopular opinion but it's true

The film for Doukyuusei is so goooood, I'd definitely recommend Doukyuusei more than Papa to kiss in the dark XXXDD
icecreamyummycookie right??? I don’t even know why he mentioned papa to kiss in the dark tbh
shows how much he knows about yaoi tbh
Tha relationship was lacking because YOI is NOT yaoi. It's an spokon, so the romance was a subplot ._.

Argh...((
Doukyuusei was life it was really good I even watched it and enjoyed it before I started really liking yaoi. That’s really saying something.
so good uuuuhhhh
Oooh that was so goooood
lol Yuri on Ice was certainly not the first BL anime I've watched but it was the first I've seen that portrayed a healthy same-sex relationship and had a plot outside of them being a couple.
Yeah, sure
Doesn't make it special though and certainly not worth freaking out over
Gouma I mean, everyone has their own opinion. Nothing wrong with that 🤷🏻♀️
Boring and creepy. And ....mostly the crime was that it was boring.
Dana, stop stretching things and call Viktor creepy *Rolls eyes*
I respect others' opinions about Yuri On Ice, but It is special *for me* I have my own reasons
Looks like people still don't understand that Yuri on Ice is not yaoi. Yes, Viktor and Yuuri are gay for each other, but that's doesn't mean their romance was like super importance to the main plot. Kubo just wanted to show a world without homophobia.
Neo Terra yeah but still yaoi lol
Darius Jones Its not yaoi because there weren't any sexual scenes of any sort during it. It didn't show anything private either. They never kissed, only once but it didn't even show because it was covered up. It's a sports anime. The romance in yuri on ice is subtle and a background item because the sports part is the most important part. That's why it's not categorized as a yaoi anime
It's shounen ai all right
My problem with the series is probably the fact that it changes direction out of nowhere.
Yuri on Ice really was the first anime I saw with an LGBT couple that didn’t have some serious noncon.
i would’ve been fine with the yoi opinion if you didn’t recommend an incest anime
and yeah, yoi definitely isn’t special, but it was very fascinating how they incorporated something like ice skating to make it like an aspect of a romantic relationship. and imo, i wasn’t even that invested in the ship. the art, the music, and the other characters are also part of why yuri on ice was special to some of the fans
The show just wasn't his cup of tea lmaoo get over yourself DA

You should watch N°6 if you ever have the time.
Did-
Did he just say "Papa to kiss in the Dark"
I'm wheezing
De'Siree Fairley You’re late, but not the only one. And also I agree with your opinion!

Yuri on Ice is really an amazing anime.

Let's just make something clear. Yaoi is explicit BL. Sexualization. If you're talking bout YOI, it's all fluff, so its shounen-ai
Someone finally says it, thank you.
big ups... the light light BL in YOI felt more like a bit of an afterthought.. it's far from the genre, but I think it did a lot of good for normalization
Unpopular Opinion: Yuno Gasai doesn't deserve to be the Yandere Queen (Watch Shuffle). Fight Me!!
Dragon Sage agreed
She's overrated as a yandere.
AGREED SHE'S OVERRATED AS FUCK
Overrated but still a good Anime Meme
Citrus has the excuse that the girl in it misunderstands what a loving relationship entails because of being abused.
ItsChikken did you just copy/paste wtf
Well, I'm spreading the word. Not my problem that the comment is pointing out that many people are misconstruing his words and what he actually means.

Girlll amen!!!
Vida_Boo haha sure do it thanks I've been bored with the anime I've been seeing lately like I only seem to stumble apon harem other world animes
Luca Osten one question though, would you call yourself a fujoshi
Same thing with Yami no matsuei :)
@@matt6157 why dont u like the sport element of YOI? Just asking

There is always some new fucking
Girl in the way making any kind of normal relationship between them like impossible. I mean they literally make it impossible for themselves anyway
Sure, it does involve sexual harassment and sexual assault at a lot of times throughout the series, however, the reasons as to why those encounters happen in the first place does make sense.

They don't even kiss (thoigh it's obious there's something) So yeah, there are more.

damn true on the Sekaiichi Hatsukoi
What? Rape in Sekaiichi? When was that??
So I would agree with "too much hype" and "fangirls need to chill."
u said everything i wanted to say lol
as a lesbo, the representation of just their cute n warm relationship was great. it was too hyped n i hate that fangirls were just like obsessing over it for the wrong reasons, but im still glad it got the attention

Quentin Ellison they copied the name from the manga. Good thing they change it in the second season
Wow, haven't heard that joke before!
Also i was extremely fascinated by the fact that so many of the characters on the show were sort of like the actual figure skaters and that for the animation and sound the figure skaters recorded those noises and choreographed it.
its my guilty pleasure anime after-all.
...........you can do a quad flip and you're not competing internationally?
- superwholockin07 - I was referring to Yuri in Ice... as in Yuri could do a quad flip not me
Ginban kaleidoscope says hi
yessss

"Papa to kiss in the dark"

I love doukyuusei, it's such a nice and pure love story! I wish there could be a movie like that but with girl protagonists!
tbh n6 wasn't that good. i enjoyd it and liked nezumi's and shion's(if i remember their names right lol) relationship but yuri on ice is still better that n6
@@yuriayato110 yeah, the anime itself was confusing. Whereas Yuri On Ice would still be great without yuri and Victor's relationship
Ikr! No.6! Which never gets talked about. It was one of my favourites.
Why papa to kiss in the dark vov
i watched and read doukyuusei a few days ago and my heart is still squeezed and crying happy tears!!! its just sooo adorable!!!
SPORTS.)
Rainix Kaitou Truer words have never been spoken 👏👏👏

Joey: Some Girls prefer DBZ over Sailor moon and some Boys prefer Sailor Moon over DBZ.
Im one of those boys...
XColdHearted X and I’m one of those girls..(even though I love both series)
And I'm one of those girls ^^
One of those girls!
The main attraction of yuri on ice for me was the character development and the challenges yuri faced, also how yuri realized he wasn’t alone, and victor really did help with that. For me, even though I personally really liked the relationship in it, I loved the development even more.
Ikr? I also like how it's represents mental health (For example Yuuri's lack of confidence and anxiety) a bit better than other shows
Yeah same here
so you liked the relationship. The development is literally part of the relaitonship.
Lol, the fact is yuri never alone, he had bestfriends, and coach. The plot is weird, their forcing romance conflict to sport.
Papa to kiss in the dark as a "good representation of an lgbt relationships".... was a joke right? A show were.. SPOILERSWARNING:
where a plot point is the guys angst over whether or not he's not committing incest/pedophilia with his real father is a reason for him to be upset?!?!
thats a joke right???
I hope so. YOI's LGT+ appeal is how natural and how little of a detail they made Yuri and Viktor's BL was. I won't call it yaoi since it is a pure and non-sexual romance.
Cloudsonglover666 sorry sorry.. but LGT+??? It's lgbtq+.. isn't it
Skiperdee. I forgot two letters. Sorry.
Johnny Hanel who are you talking to? There’s nothing about Citrus in this comment.
Have you seen/read Gravitation? I mean, wow, emotional manipulation galore. Apparently, the mutually consensual relationship in YOI isn't considered interesting because the characters don't go uber-angsty.

As a part of the LGBT+ community, I think Yuri On Ice was fine. It wasn't the best
I agree
Jane Rain go watch no.6 its way better than yuri on ice and also read the manga because the manga is way better
I agree with you
Jane Rain No one honestly cares if you’re part of the LGBT except for other members, and constantly telling people that you’re part of that community like that’s all you were about really does annoy people, not because they hate gays or bi’s or lesbians or trans, it’s because that’s all you ever talk about no one wants to talk about the same subject for the rest of their life
@@mango_ii7385 me too, I loved the skating and the characters in it and that was the reason it kept me keep watching.

Just because the anime is bad doesn't mean you cant love a character from it. I think this is an unpopular opinion.
Mithun Mustakine thank you 😍because I totally agree on that also I have no idea if that an unpopular opinion 🤔😓😅
SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK CUZ TRU THAT
The reason is I love Zero Two but I also think that Darling in The Franxx is an awful show. People always think that's contradictory and don't seem to really care about that opinion. Thus I think its an unpopular opinion. I can say that for many other characters as well.
Mithun Mustakine
Well i hate SAO but I love Sinon
I understand you completely
Honestly I never finished Darling in the Franxx cuz I didn't like it either but Zero Two is a really good character
Wallflower Bruh you need to see NO.6, you will love it.
What about Yarichin bitch club, no rape, doesn’t pretend it’s something else than it is, just straight sex 😂 (soon getting an OVA)
Ten count, fucking amazing. No rape, gonna get an anime adoptation.
hitorijime my hero, the age difference is meh but overall it’s nice. No rape.
Then we could go on, but yeah overall it’s a strong rape culture. Especially in the omega verse series.
Ten count seemed kind of rapey to me because black haired dude kept touching red haired dude even after he kept saying stop... that was towards the beginning of their relationship
well.... see theres this thing.... called having a different opinion...
Agreed - As much as I love Yuri On Ice, it could have been represented a little bit better, there are still scenes where I question Viktor's actions in which NO ONE in this comment section has mentioned that I've seen so far. But yeah at least it's better than Citrus and Papa To Kiss In The Dark o.o
Hopefully there will be a more wholesome anime with lgbt representation in future with no nudity, and no fetishy rape kinda thing - something that aint NSFW to summarise it.
It's not yaoi.b
Amber B. Couldn’t agree more!
un-fetishized...
while showing hunderts of male asses XD
Why is the focus for Yuri on Ice on the LGBTQ factor and not that it's about ice skating? That's what I enjoyed it for. The inner demons the characters faced. The moving music. The motivations and goals that drove the characters to competitive figure skating. Maybe the hate comes from getting stuck on one aspect of it instead of enjoy it as a whole?
THANK YOU. I also love it because of the ice skating, not because "omg it's gay!!!"...pathetic.
Shut you BAKA! I’m only here for hot yaoi boys!
I watched it because I liked the intro song. It made me like even more figure ice skating and the ‘yaoi’ was a bonus.
Not gonna lie, my brother got me to watch it and afterwards I was like "That was barely shonen Ai, that was just a cool sportsanime"
Also JJ should've won
Wow you went fire on the keyboard or screen
True! Kind of like the Doukyuusei movie and mangas ^^ man Doukyuusei is such a cute story... Kusakabe is best husbando
This is exactly how I feel about it. It's special because it didn't follow the tropes that tend to haunt same sex relationships in anime and manga. Sometimes nothing special is exactly what you need to make it special.
Yeah it’s a sports anime with a canon gay relationship not a yaoi
I like when shows (anime or not) make a couple gay and don't even mention it, that's normalizing. We don't need parades, pride days, SPECIAL events... we just need to normalize what is natural. And Yuri on Ice did that GREAT. :3
Yuri on ice is not a yaoi anime it's a sports anime that has an LGBT relationship so claiming it's a yaoi and comparing it to real yaoi anime is dumb
Hey Itz Zoe exactly!
Yes!
Most yaoi animes suck anyway.
B1Q Wow thanks for that
ur gonna get it in from the fangirls are you trying to die i-
I will agree that Yuri On Ice isn't special in regards to the lgbtq+ representation.
Finally, some good fucking opinion.
Glad you think so
Kathryn Kiefer well, that happens too. Some people are more into the romantic side of a show, that's why shipping exists in every single fandom. The story of Yuri On Ice is simple and inspiring, so finding interest in other parts of the show makes sense.
But why gay tho
OrbitalForce YT
1. Because straight couples are normal as is, aren't they?
2. It would make no sense in the story if Viktor was a girl for example. Male and female ice skating competitions happen at different times so it would make no sense for Viktor not to compete.
3. Hot Spring scene.

But the thing is Yuri on ice is not really a yaoi IMO, yes there is a gay romance but its clearly more an spokon anime
Andres Valera There is a hint of yaoi-ness, yes. Accdg to its original genre, it is just a sports themed anime.

Doukyuusei is outstanding and I hope you get the chance to watch/review the film! It deserves much more popularity than it received and is probably the best BL out there (unique art and animation, quirky personalities that deviate slightly from established tropes, and it's lighthearted, sweet, comedic) 💕
It was so pure, it melted my heart.
Did he just recommend Citrus as portraying a "good yuri relationship"?? Imo that couldn't be more wrong...
Yuri on ice just has something there that captures your attention and the story keeps it there
ikr lmao isn't Citrus technically incest because they're stepsisters too??
@@huh_what_ incest is having a sexual relationship with your close blood-related family. Step-siblings are not included, so no.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
While I do agree with your statement i do NOT like it when people claim they can speak for me just because I am LGBT does not mean I hold the same opinions as while It is refreshing to see a gay relationship in this light it’s just one of the things I dislike about the community because people see us as a community which implys we all hold
The same values and opinions while I see us as a demographic sorry for the rant it’s just a annoyance of mine and is not meant to you personally
Keri Diablo / DevilSide True
Well im not gonna watch it cause im not gay. But i think most people watch it because the main character is gay
Yeah IKR!
Super Eggroll my point is the story and character building and such should be the focus when looking into this anime, not the "gay factor"

Uncle and nephew but that doesn’t make it better. I recommend getting lgbt content from actual lgbt creators

The Queen of Happiness you’re right, but it’s gay. yuri on ice also isn’t BL/yaoi/shounen ai but most people label it as “yaoi” because it’s gay. whether that’s right or wrong the word yaoi is mostly used to describe gay mlm anime...
