Darwin Falls: Hiking to Death Valley National Park's Waterfall

- Darwin Falls is a waterfall in Death Valley National Park, home to the lowest and hottest place on Earth. Not many people venture out to Darwin Falls since it is so far off the parks main road, but if you want to have a fun adventure then this hike is worth the drive. The hike is 2 miles round trip and the waterfall flows at least half of the year. Let me know what you think in the comments.

I know I was surprised by that as well. The NPS website says it flows year round but I imagine it is small after the summer if it is still flowing

What a beautiful place! I have been to Dumont Dunes with friends to ride motor bikes. At night the sky is so clear. Thank you for showing us the Falls.

Nice. I was in Death Valley years ago and you are right, it gets hot! My friend Harry and I drove high up where there were these structures where they would make charcoal and I learned later there is a trail up there that I would love to hike one day if I get back that way because it was so much cooler than down in the lower elevations. I remember driving back down to the hotel where we stayed and it went from nice, cooler temps to incredibly hot!
Don't you know that spring has saved some lives over the years.

Ya it is a dirt road for two miles to the trailhead. I’m sure it depends on the time of year as to how bad it is (after the rain and such)

Holcomb Valley is beautiful. The backcountry of Big Bear. We take Polique Canyon Road from N Shore Dr (38) in Big Bear Lake. The drive is rough for the first few miles. White crushed rock is the road, leaving the surrounding area in dust, looking like it snowed. And your car too. But once you get to the backcountry. It leaves me awestruck to see the beauty. Open countryside. We drive as far as we could but the road deep ahead is a bit scary for me. So we turn around and backtrack the way out. There are campgrounds there too. Which we plan on doing but haven't yet. We do have a cabin in Big Bear Lake, off Jefferies Road.
Years ago, there was no signage, the landmark was the water pipe. You could sleep overnight in the staging area. We only hiked it in spring, fall and sometimes winter. But, very worth it.

@@californiathroughmylens After you posted about General Sherman & Moro Rock a friend & I decided to make a spontaneous trip to Sequoia for both our first times & explore all its beauty, so far that's been my favorite. Last week I also did the Slot in Anza Borrego & I'm hoping to hit up The Lost Palm Oasis in Joshua Tree next time I have a day off & the weather cools down a bit :)

According to the National Park website it flows most of the year. I would imagine it wouldn’t be a lot but this was in July and it was still flowing pretty good

In the 1960's, you could drive all the way up the road close to the falls.

Dr Darwin French was my great, grand uncle. For further info, see his mini-bio on Wikipedia.
He was quite an exceptional individual. The nearby ghost town of Darwin was named after him. He was most likely the first white man to explore Death Valley - in 1850 and again in 1860. Besides Darwin Falls there is a place called Darwin Wash - also named after him.

Haha ya most people think it’s all desert but there are spots like this and even 10,000 foot mountains peaks in the park

Why does no one ever report the tarantula hawks that are there? I had a bunch of them when i went there i was petrified but i loved this hike regardless

We have a camper and were planning driving north through Sierra Nevadas all the way up to Lassen NP and south along the coast to San Louis Obispo, maybe Solvang. This trip is mainly about nature. Can this be done in October?
My wife and I did Darwin Falls, but right where the rocks cross the little stream of water, I stepped on a sand covered rock and SLIPPED... My Nikon D850 camera/batgrip and Nikon 12-14mm f2.8 lens bounced off the rock. I can still hear that hollow sound as I type. We were close....we traveled to Bishop/Lake Sabrina last week. My question to you is - we are planning a trip from Los Angeles, CA to Tombstone, AZ via I10 & I80 ....what sites/attractions/locations do you recommend we see or visit along this route? Or anyone out there - what does anyone recommend to visit?
did you venture into the pool or just hopped around the rocks on the side?
I just explored the rocks around the side and stood on a little log to get a few shots.

Yea, I am pretty sure you are not supposed to swim in the water. The pool is pretty small as well so it wouldn't really be a good spot for swimming anyway.

Do rent a place to stay then go on the trails or just leave early?. Because coming from San Diego looks to be about a 5 Hour Drive.
I would stay in Death Valley overnight because I’ve driven from SD and it’s a long drive there and back...if you actually want to look around the park and hike-it’s quite a big park
I agree with the other commenter, I would stay in the park and explore more of it if you are making the drive all the way from San Diego

Where does the water come from? Is there a spring up stream from the falls? Well obviously, but how far upstream is it? Is it hikeable?
Good question but I am not sure about the stream or whether you can continue on. Sorry about that!
Hey Josh and Derek - I was coming back to Central CA from a week of Photoshop World in Las Vegas about 6-7 years ago. Darwin Falls was on my list of "Do It Before I Die" so I had to stop by. I was able to drive my 2002 Ford F-150 (2WD only) to the parking area with no problem; and the hike in to the Falls was not bad at all. I think I was one of three vehicles there that day. It was early Spring, and the weather was overcast and cool (PERFECT for hiking DV!). And Derek, the hike didn't take long, but once at the Falls I didn't see an easy way past the large rocks that make up the falls. Keep in mind I was almost 60 and fighting a dose of cancer; I'm not a mountain goat and I DO know my limits! Maybe you younger guys and gals can find a way up and over. If you do, take lots of photos and videos for those of us non-mountain-goat folks!
It was really beautiful, peaceful, and the Falls sang a beautiful song. Right in the middle of Death Valley! At the time I was there, there was a tree that arched over in front of the falls, blocking the view. No, I did NOT chop it down!!! But I noticed in your shots, the tree is gone. Bet it got washed away in some flash flood (and makes for a much better image).
Josh, you and your dad did a good job of showing the drive and hike, to allow smart people the ability to make up their own mind if they have the gear to make it or not. I've only seen a few of your videos (so far - I have some catching up to do!) but it seems like you do a good job of that - so people know what to expect and if it's within their skill- and gear-level. Thanks for that. And yes, I subscribed!
Please keep us old-timers in mind as you continue your YT career. Some of us can get around OK, but many of us have limitations, and it's very helpful to know whether to even attempt a hike. Pitons and climbing rope, uh nope! A dry wash like this one - oh yeah! So thanks again for showing more people the beautiful place that we call home.

Ya the main park area that people visit is pretty much desert but there are places like this and even high mountain peaks in the park as well

The fires are not in Death Valley.

@@MarEXksz In Southern California the sky is nothing but smoke. It's been about four days. I think it's like this all over the Pacific, from Mexico to Canada from All the fires. The year of 2020 continues.
This video is is most likely from last year, my friends. With all the downtime, I'm catching up and editing older videos as well.
This video is from a few months ago, I am sure there would be more smoke at the moment but I am not sure if there are any fires near the Death Valley area currently

Not sure about that, but there are campgrounds in Furnace Creek so you could explore other parts of the park and then do this hike on the way out, since it is pretty far from Furnace Creek
