I have the same carpet kit and pads. I agree the padding is kind of sucky, and really could be a lot more precise. Also the carpet in the foot area like yours is not the greatest fit, overhang into the footwell or the tunnel. I may shave mine down a bit as that overhang at the footwell just looks terrible to me.
I agree with most of that. I'm still happy with the new carpet over the old carpet, but I get your point. I think there's a higher quality one but I don't recall at the moment.
Good video, thanks. I would say the lines of the carpet around the edges; so the passenger and drivers door shut area, seem a bit excessive,,,so the carpet maybe larger than required or some additional adjustment towards the centre maybe?
Although I'm very happy with the end result I guess I was maybe expecting a little more initially. However it's been two or three months since the install and I'm very happy with the result the carpet is holding up very well. I would also say that the light gray looks more blue to me than Gray. So depending on what you're looking for I do recommend getting a sample of the different colors which I think they do provide for free.
The sound deadening really didn't help much because it's such an open concept and loud vehicle. It didn't hurt but I didn't scientifically measure anything so it's difficult to really tell but nothing noticeable. It definitely looked better and was worth getting fresh carpet.
Hi! I have a brown 86 Westy as well! Its time for a new carpet :). Did you like the charcoal or would you rather bought the original color? How does the sound dampening work? Love to see progress. Ill send ya a pic of my westy some time. Best to you.
I definitely like the color I chose. The chocolate brown is just too sad. It's hard to say with the sound dampening because the van generally is pretty loud anyway. If you try to save money I'd probably skip it as I don't recall a major difference. Definitely share your progress! Woot!
Hi. thank you for sharing this video... can you tell me what you did for the area between the kitchen and behind the driver seat? do i need to remove the kitchen cabinets?
Okay I am new at this can you help me confirm these steps: 1. Put down the fatmat sound dampening 2. Put down under carpet insulation 3. Glue carpet down with the general purpose adhesion spray Let me know if I missed any steps!
Man, my girlfriend has one of those and she treats it like her son. I wish I could find someone that could do this job for me cause I have little to no skill with manual job. The country where I’m from we just hire someone to do it cause services aren’t as expensive as in the US. She lives in California though, would you happen to know where I could find someone that would do this service?
It's really not as scary as it looks. But I get it... In la there's a bunch of companies that do interior car work. I'm not sure what part of California she's from but she should be able to find someone to do that. Thanks for the comment and best of luck to you and her as well.
Outstanding vid.Thank you...I plan to change the carpet in my 1982 vanagon.Fantastic narration also and nice van.
Nicely done Sir! Thanks for documenting the parts and where you obtained them.
thank you! I needed some inspiration and this helped.
The carpet does appear to be a bit more blue but I think it still looks good with your Vanagon.
Excellent video! Very helpful. Thank you.

Very nicely done video. I like the rubber carpet mat you have. Do you remember where you got them? Would you have a link? Thanks!
I got them to gowesty here's the description...VB-10006-GY: Rubber Floor Mats - 2 Piece Front (COLOR: GRAY)
Thanks for the positive response 🤠

Does the kit comes also with the undercarpet insulation or just the carpet itself? Nice result!
At the time mine just came with the carpet only.
@@smidgelife thanks for the fast response!
Just need matching seats and you're set
Thanks for sharing. My ‘84 has some pretty ratty carpet. Did the sound deadening have any effect on the noise?

Question how did you remove the floor adhesive from the old carpet? Any recommendations?
My carpet was the original so it was actually pretty easy to pull up nothing complicated.

I did not remove the cabinets. Too much work. I just cut the carpet, you can't tell at all 😅
@@smidgelife LOL... darn, yea, i noticed that part was there, and boom :) thanks for the quick response and thanks again for the guidance.
Do you have to glue the carpet to the insulation pad? Thanks
Yes. I used a spray glue that they recommended...it's forgiving which is good.
Smidge Life thank you!!! Keep up with the videos 👍
Thank you will do got another one coming out here very soon I appreciate the kind words and good luck with your carpet.

No you got it it's that simple. And as with all Vans you could always clean while you have everything out.

Are those original Seat upholstery?
Yes. One of the few things that were in good shape 😁
