- As Swatch X Blancpain release the Fifty Fathoms 'Scuba' watch I decided to check out the waiting line in Amsterdam. How many flippers? How many collectors. Would you wait 15 hours in a queue all night for a plastic watch?

All these people waiting in line aren’t watch lover, they are all flippers.
Many flippers were present 🤣
What, How long can dolphins survive out of water?
Agree. I think he was lied to by many.
@@HorologyBiology many meaning 75% of them, because I am pretty sure majority of them never heard name blancpain before this collaboration.
The reason why they chose Blancpain is precisely to raise awareness for the brand, IMO. A Tissot swatch would be kind of silly I think, because they basically would be at the same price point. The collab needs to be with a high end brand. Maybe Breguet or Glashutte will be next.
We’ll have to wait an see. I still think they will end up ripping through the whole group as it’s clearly about money.
How about Patek Phillipe x Swatch ?
Very difficult to imitate the core essentials of a Breguet. Breguet is a niche choice and an acquired taste.
It's a Swatch. A watch that is made to eventually break and be thrown away. Crazy buying one of these.
It is. An expensive logo Watch
Jesus Christ!
Nobody goes to Swatch, nobody goes to Blancpain, so they made a watch that is limited to retail so it could be flipped.
Great success.
Who buys this on eBay for 1k is beyond me.
He cannot help you with this sorry 😅
I think this will be the he last one as I don’t think many will pay that much over. The 1st person he talked too (off camera) even started doing the math and probably realized the silliness.
@@WestCoastAce27 They sold out that day. Of course they will continue.
UNBELIEVABLE!! Those people spent the whole night outside the store to pay $400.00 for a disposable watch, thats crazy. Talking about being stupid. LOL
😅 Thanks for watching 👍
Actually,it can be serviced.
Soo,... not /that/ bad.
@@kimchiwasabee It cannot be serviced. Non-serviceable movement.
@@kimchiwasabeeYeah. A review I saw said there are several companies servicing sistem51. Anyone know about this?
They'll flip them for thousands.
I see this as a good thing for Swatch and anyone they collaborate with, as well as maybe those that are just getting into watches! It reinvigorates the Brand, the community, the market! 👍🏻
Thanks for watching. Personally I cannot help but feel that they are cashing in a little too much
@@HorologyBiology On a side note for someone interested in learning Repair/making…have you thought of an apprenticeship program or some classes others could follow? Being in the US an Online platform would be best. Additionally, any ideas on how to get started without traditional schooling besides just watching videos?
Anybody who waits in line for anything is a fool
I'm a 5 min max guy. I cannot even hold on the phone 😅
I'm waiting for the Swatch collaboration with Swatch, a bioceramic version of a plastic watch yes please.
😂😅
Of course, the flippers. Not surprised. -You're paying for the name on the dial with this one. I think they ran out of brands in their portfolio to do this with. Tissot does not have any prestige and is already in the lower end price bracket. Blancpain was discussed as an alternative to the Omega collab, but then they went with Omega for the first round. Breguet is really the only other one they could consider, and I'm not sure if that's helpful. If it was outside the Swatch Group, then the Heuer Monaco could lend itself very well to being plasticised and with lots of colour (see Bamford's custom versions). Or a Breitling Navitimer could be fun. However those would have to contain a quartz movement again, unless Swatch can make a plastic chronograph movement in the meantime.
Thanks for the comment 👍🏼 I still cannot help but think they will end up flying through the whole group though over the years. Thanks for watching 💪
Like moths to the flame. It has BlancPain written on the dial , apart from that it is a Swatch that cant be serviced on a recycled strap supporting a plastic case.
I do find the whole recycled from fishing nets strap on a plastic case. I mean where do they think it will end up in the end when it's broken ;)
@@HorologyBiology more plastic in landfill and ocean because it's going to fall off your wrist or implode at 5ft
turns out it CAN be serviced and the case back is pop-off-able
I think I’ll wait for the pagani design homage for £65 with a decent movement in it 😂
haha thanks Tom. I thought I had added Pagani to my UA-cam filtered comments already.. You must have sneaked in haha. Thanks for watching 👍
To be honest that swatch movement seems pretty alright.. not so much for $400 or whatever.
@HorologyBiology Are you joking or can UA-cam channels block certain words from their comments section?
Love the content bro!
Thank you my man, enjoy your vacation 💪
People with more money than sense. Its a cheap plastic watch. Not worth more than £40. You can buy much better watches for half the price. The fool and his money are easily parted ! 👍😂
Hoooomans never fail to amuse me 😂 Thanks for watching 👍
No, you’re wrong
Super fresh Gold R!
👍💪 Thanks for watching
I like the TV series analogy. I too can see the hype dying down once they get to the third season.
Exactly
Front of the line interviews you are going place’s HB keep up the good work. HB the roving reporter. I’m off to Europe next month so will get to see these in the flesh but unlikely to buy one. Keep well from New Zealand 🇳🇿
haha thanks Bruce. I was a bit surprised that I could pull it off and grab some Q&A with the Swatch employee.
Go back in time to the Eighties when I was growing up. I could find the same design plastic watch in lucky packets that did not cost even half the asking price for these novelties.
Aw yes... the good ole days. Thanks for watching 👍
So civilized! Vancouver is the “We have No system, Run Push Budge and fight system “. Amsterdam or perhaps Japan might be the place to que for these things. Great vid, cheers! BTW - nope on the Swatchpain
Could be although it was very very different over here with the Moonswatch release
It is a decent watch. Too expensive? Maybe but 400€ is not toooo much I think 250 a fair price, but I have seen far worse elsewhere: Concert Tickets. Holiday. Hotel rates etc. - Only very few folks would spend above retail. I think you can buy them soon without queuing up. Is that price too high? - it is a free country your choice
Thanks for watching 👍🏻👍🏻
Good on them put a smile on my face like minded watch collecting people’s keeping it real
Sarcasm right?? Many many people were just flippers for sure
Is this place close to Vondelpark??
Looks familiar.
Greets from Warsaw.
Hello Poland 😀 Yes it is, just around the corner.
Hi Mat, still cant decide if I like them the BP FF is a great watch just not sure about it in plastic the colours seem the wrong shade I thought that about the Omega Swatch to tho anyway congrats on subs over 5000 still can wait to win it !! LOL 😂
It's not for me if I'm honest. I actually think the Moonswatch looked 'visually' better
$400 is ridiculous, $800 is f’king insane.
What is $800? Or you mean't in general?
@@HorologyBiology you had mentioned in the video that some people were offering double to skip the queue..
@@jokeassasin7733 yes of course sorry 🤦🏻♂️
I wouldn't stand in line that long for that watch. That's crazy.
It is insane for sure mate
Enjoyed the video. Queue for plastic?
I wouldn’t even queue for steel 🤣
I collect watches, but the longest I would wait in a line to buy one would be around 30 minutes.
30 mins is toooo long bro 😎
@@HorologyBiology I guess if I reeaally wanted the watch I could wait the 30 minutes.
That was my thought exactly - I was a little surprised at the crowds because Blancpain is not very well known. I think here in the US the lines would be shorter. Perhaps Swatch is trying to make Blancpain more known to younger or cost conscious consumers?
I think there is a small element of them seeking out younger awareness but I think the majority of it is a cash cow for sure. Thanks for watching 👍🏻
Flipper frenzy
Many flippers were present lol
Swatch is doing something right take advantage of people's weakness to watch collecting. Here's hoping Swatch x Tissot in thr future I'd be down for that.
Finally! Someone liking vintage Tissot!
Plastic prx would be the outcome, maybe the gentleman.
Hi Mat, I forgot to leave a comment on this video yes I love what Swatch have done but £400 for a £30 watch though? and all the people going on about can it be serviced! it's a fucking plastic watch your lucky if the battery can be replaced and for the price you can buy a decent watch! there's old Omega, Certina, Tissot ect you should do a video on what you can buy for under £500 show the choice out there because you can get a lot of watch for your money but you need to know what's what and you do and do service videos on those movements that would be great and get you to 10000 subs so I can win that watch! I've bought a box and everything I really cant wait any longer!
Staying super fresh Andy.
hahahah ' I've bought a box and everything ' lolol you kill me mate 😂😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣@@HorologyBiology
Another brilliant move from Swatch. And it also opens the doors for many people to a world of luxury watches.
I just cannot help but think it's much more rather about money
For me, this is about good marketing for beautiful and great watches in this world. A beautiful watch is a piece of jewelry that he or she wears. But yes! The Swatch Group also wants to make money.
@@leowindow This is a plastic Swatch watch. It's not even made to last. It's basically a throwaway.
That's cool to see such energy for a mechanical watch release, but like you, the experience would be far more satisfying if the bulk had been waiting all night because they were excited for the watch rather than simply profiteering. As for me, I'd rather have the Tissot, but were I there and had the opportunity I'd have waited in line for one for myself, wear it the next few weeks, then just to have in my collection. 😂
Yes, exactly. Many flippers for sure
All scalpers with the watches already listed on the bay for 3-4x mrsp.
Don’t pay it……..,
Craziness
i will just wait for the copy version 🤣
😲
Dit is echt leuke content. Super Dutch. Is dit P.C. Hoofdstr?
Ja klopt, ik bezocht om 09:30uur 💪
Didnt buy the Omega/Swatch looks the same for the Blancpain version. Just not my style. Now iust like Omega , Blancpain makes several watches that i would absolutely wear if i were looking to buy.
So to summit up, very good marketing strategy, introduce an inexpensive version and wait for the excitement to spill over into the brand .
Thanks Matt 🍻
Thanks mate 👍🏼 Realistically though do you really think it will spill over? I just don't see it. I hate to say it but I really think its a cash cow that will probably rip through the whole Swatch Group one by one. Richemont next???
Spill over may have been a bit much on my part. Definitely not the fervor that the Swatch model creates because the "real" versions cost serious money.
That being said at the least i can see an interest generated for the real thing while padding the Swatch groups bottom line.
I dont see any of the other watch
manufacturers doing this type of marketing only because they dont have the infrastructure to do so ( Swatch already does the plastic watch thing so for them its just a matter of initiating the design ) All in all its a way to make money and generate casual interest bit for those of us who take our watches more seriously ... its not for us.
Matt if i may, do you have any plans to tear apart one of those high end knockoffs just to see how they fare?
Im thinking of getting one for that reason ... just wondering and thanks for all your time and efforts !🍻
@@khronosbest9448 I did actually think about doing a video of one of those to compare but I would only do it against something I already own otherwise whats the point. I'm sure there must be some other videos out there doing this also no?
Looks like a happy meal toy.
Music 🎼 I’m loving it 🎶
Just a classic money grab by Swatch and they will keep doing it for as long as people are daft enough to pay well over the odds for a cheap plastic watch that cannot be serviced. Collectors and flippers will love it.
I'm in agreement with you to be fair and I don't think it will stop here. Tissot next woop woop lolol Thanks for watching 👍
You could be right Sir!. In the meantime, enjoying your work@@HorologyBiology
they said ..its automatic but not serviceable? so once its broken..that's it ..so its a disposable watch.. what do you think ??
Yes it's a completely non serviceable movement. So like you mentioned its then broken!
It's a toy for the target demographics
Omega Swatch retailing at £230 to £250, but still people paying more on Ebay! Its not a limited edition so eventually they will be freely available and then €1000's of euros = sleepless nights.
Still baffles me people standing out all night
Takk!
Thank you Francis 🙌🙌 👍
I only waited 2 hours in Vegas and showed up an hour after they already opened.
Damnnnn. This clearly went under the radar over there or you guys have more sense!
@@HorologyBiologyI think blancpain isn't as well known here compared to Europe
I believe the second collab is with Blancpain exactly because it is a storied and formidable brand but lacks recognition so that it creates hype around the brand and transfer a lot of the hype of the Omega collaboration to Blancpain. Swatch acts like a pipe connecting its storied brands like communicating vessels transferring interest and brand recognition between them. Blancpain could never get such an exposure by its self. This is genius.
Hmmmm one could also look at it like when Apple release their lower graded more affordable versions of their phones. I'm not convinced its to create brand awareness
Was more curious about the queue situation than the watch & you're the first to cover this , the watch itself though better manufactured than the moonswatch & as funky as they are that kinda dollar can get you a quality high beat diver from a plethora of respectable micro brands (fully ss, serviceable etc etc ) , i see these for swatch collectors & scalpers other than that the whole thing is beyond me as the notion of an overpriced plastic watch converting non-enthusiasts to a 10k++ luxury watch is complete boll%*k$. Of course its a cash grab which is fair enough just spare us the bs about brand exposure etc ,if anyone shopping at that end of the market aren't aware of Blancpain... well what can I say ?!? Thx for the coverage.
Thanks Ted. I agree with your statement as it really is a cash cow. I had no intention of making a video about the watch as there are a million other UA-cam channels doing just that! I thought.... let's drive up there and see it for ourselves. Beans and everything! 🙌🙌🙌 Thanks for watching 👍
If Swatch needs money that badly, maybe they should consider a gofundme.
😂😂 Thanks for watching 👍
They don't. They jist figured out how to make money from stupid cows.
as ALBERT EINSTEIN SAID,.... THERE ARE two things are infinite: human stupidity and the universe; and I'm not really sure about the second
👏👏👏👏👏😅 Thanks for watching 👍
Tissot x Swatch. Bioceramic PRX.
🤦♂️
Understand peoples opinion on the hype and price but was able to walk straight into swatch mid-day and purchase one to wear. In this situation, is it that bad...
I really was thinking something like this would happen as Blancpain is nowhere near as commonly known as Omega.
@@HorologyBiology It has definitely made me aware or blancpain and so far, I really like it
I bet when the Aliens fly past Earth, they locked their doors.
😅 Abort abort!!!
Swatch will probably make millions of pieces.
Billions!
I would buy it if I had an original Blancpain, just for kicks. But I don't have an original. I have an original Rado Diastar with ceramic coating, and I'm praying to the heavens that Swatch won't try to replicate it with their wonderplaydough!
Wonderplaydough hahahaha 👏👏👏👏
That's the reason I may try get one I have a blue ceramic Bathyscaphe on sail clothe. Blue even at $400+ it's a lot for a disposal watch.
Nobody gets excited about Tissot. Blancpain is an expensive watch and people think they are getting part of a Blancpain. What they are getting is a Swatch watch.
Think about vintage Tissot, obviously not the modern lines.
I'm not one to judge a person for what they spend their earned money on.
But we've all at some point spent a little too much money frivolously and impulsively (guilty of this myself).
What I very much dislike here is there are those that truly love the idea or colourful, casual, playful watches and want to enjoy them...but may be forced to pay WAY more than they ought to.
It's a shame really. Clearly the MoonSwatch and this Blancpain Collab does not make them luxury; charging what they are for both is rather silly. I'd imagine there would be less of a resell issue if they were just more affordable as opposed to premium.
But they are stupid to pay more than what it is worth. Just wait a few weeks and then buy it normally.
I remember when people did it for phones not anymore 🤣😂
You queued for a Nokia didn't you? Come on, share it with the group... 😅
@@HorologyBiology you haven't got a group I don't call one a group I've never felt the need to queued only at school when we where made to but now I am a big person and it's called waiting you see they never run out just like all the lies from watch flippers not so long ago telling their clients you can't get this can't get that what's happening now can get anything 😂🤣
Geen repareerbaar movement ?
Juist
Sort of watch you'd see on a 10yr old kid playing in the local park, like a toy watch.
If you're willing to queue for your own person gain or profit then why not but i disagree with people buying multiple products purely for greed. certain things should be limited to one a customer then when everything dies down then you can buy as many as you want.
To be fair they did only allow 1 watch per person
Casio X Swatch F51W
lol
But it is a servicable movement. You can take off the caseback.
It's 100% not a serviceable movement and the case back cannot be removed. It's sealed.
I wouldn't say they're watch enthusiats
Some were for sure
Wait hours and pay hundreds for a plastic watch? Hell no.
I wouldn't have lasted 30 mins
I just simply do not get the hype over this or the Moonswatch. Just cheapens everything. At least this one is mechanical but I am assuming that the case is sealed hence the zero option to service? Could be a pain if the watch stops in a week or so, or you drop it.
Id rather put my money in anything else thats made of steel for a start.
Great video but I think you should have taken the P#ss more out of them in the queue.
Thanks mate. I would have but I didn't want to get attacked by the zillons of flippers 😅 The case is all sealed up yes so no service option. Besides, even if it wasn't you still couldn't do it because it's all machine built with just 1 screw for the rotor. I'm assuming its all riveted.
@@HorologyBiology Yes, the Sistem 51 is a non serviceable movement so even if you could open the case. You would have to sawp out the movement. For all intents and purposes, these are disposable plastic watches. Yet they claim the straps are created from recycled fishing nets. A bit redundant in my opinion 🤣
Environmental attributes amount nothing when its a throw away watch!
This was something I touched on before. A lot of effort into making a strap from used fishing nets while using it on a plastic case. Odd!
'i go and try, if like i buy if not like i buy and sell' so there is no trying it on just buy it either way
Hmmm ok 👍
Just go's to show there is one born every minute
The hype literally died a death very fast on this one
Damn, people just admitting they are gonna flip it, disgusting....
Brazen Flippers
@@HorologyBiology ahah, I guess you're right, let's just laugh at them...and at those who'll spend an outrageous amount of money to buy the watches from them
I’ll just buy one from a guy in China who finds one it a muddy field and does a great restoration
hahah I see what you did there Bertie lol
Apparently a whole generation of people once paid money to buy a rock in a cardboard box.
There is no explaining people's emotional purchases.
I have nothing against Swatch watches except when they are exorbitantly overpriced and pretend to be something they're not. There used to be a word for watches like this: knock offs. Counterfeits. Swatch just used a conglomerate to do the same thing counterfeiters in China have been doing to Rolex for decades.
I hear you 👍
Yes, it is a serviceable movement because the case back can be opened unlike the other sistem51 watches.
No it cannot be serviced whatsoever. How exactly can you service something that literally has 1 screw on the whole movement??
@@HorologyBiology ask at a Swatch store
@@Goldorakslim I own a Tissot with a Sistem 51 movement. They are non serviceable and someone who just picked one of these up confirmed the cases are sealed.
Swatch does it again! It seems these watches are all meant for scalpers who are willing to lose a night's sleep for a night out's worth of money, what a joke. There are still sellers on the biggest danish 2nd hand marketplace, desperately trying to sell off never worn "moonswatches", prices continue to fade and getting close to or even fall below retail price. And after the hype dies down and people regain their sanity and actually looks into the watch, they ask themselves who the hell want a basically POS watch with a POS strap anyways!
There really were a lot of flippers there, although as I suspected the resale on these is no where near as hyped as the Moonswatch. Thanks for watching

Those in line willing to wait hours to buy for resale so long as there's no hoarding.... nothing inherently wrong with ppl trying to make an honest Buck. They didn't steal... they actually put in the hours for it.
It only means they need the money otherwise they'd be doing something else to feed themselves or their families.
Since the buyers are willing and voluntarily paying the higher prices then both parties are willing participants.
It's a free market economy after all.

I don't think the flippers did as well this time if you compare it to the Moonswatch
Lol you can buy a Tissot PRX for 345 . less than this one. And Tissot selling a tone of watches. So to make an collaboration with swatch makes no sense at all!! It is to make Blancpane famous.
Think Vintage Tissot models my man 😉 Thanks for watching 👍
Yes, Blancpain is very overpriced - people with that kind of money would buy a near new Rolex from a grey market dealer - or by 3 Tudors.
@@WestCoastAce27you don't know much about watches. Rolex is mainly about marketing. Blancpain watches are far better finished than Rolex. Rolexes are mass produced by machines and they make around 1.2 million watches per year. Blancpain is haute horology whereas Rolex is mass produced watches. It is ridiculous to call Blancpain overpriced when they are similarly priced to a mass produced product like Rolex. Go and look through the Blancpain catalogue and you will see watchmaking that is on another level to Rolex.
Waste. Of money, even if you don’t use it the oils will dry out in 4 years and it won’t be worth anything as a watch only as a collectable lump of expensive plastic.
You are right, the odds of these movements lasting a long time is slim. Of course they are not designed for that in the first place though. Thanks for watching 👍🏻
Everyone buying the blue😅they think it will have the same problem the Neptune had.😂😂😂
I did notice this. Everyone wanted the blue one for some reason, one of the yout flippers (we'll call him Flipper 1) told me it was the most desirable 😅
Driven by SM advertising hype, mass hysteria on any new launch, the desire to be first day purchaser, and the excitement of the chase. Collectors of anything will Q on launch day. Whether it will be games consoles, new games, mobile phones, apple products, it is the human response no matter what the product is, the price is or the long term relevance. This is not a new phenomenon. The YT reaction is what is different. Hundreds if not thousands of YTubers clammering for hits and likes. If people want to Q and spend their money on their hobby, so what ? good luck to them, leave them to enjoy their moment. As a balance I'll throw this in. Grown adults have recently succumbed to waiting up to 3 months for a product. It loses 20% of its worth the day after you buy it and 40% off its value after 12 months. The main part of it has a finite life, it cannot be serviced or repaired if damaged and it cannot be recycled. After 20 years the item will have little value and basically scrap metal and worthless ! Guessed what it is yet ? Leave the fashion watch buyers alone to enjoy their moment.
You sound passionate about it, I like this 💪
Once again Swatch make another Happy Meal toy. $400 for a plastic piece of crap, It's not like they are getting a Blancpain, just another plastic toy with their name on it. A slight improvement on the last collaboration but, it's life expectancy is not much more.
Happy Meal 😂

$400 for a watch that can't be serviced, that has a terrible movement with a plastic pallet fork and escape wheel. You can buy a nice all metal super clone for that money which has a copy ETA movement that can be serviced/repaired or replaced. I won't be buying one of these plastic fads!
You were doing soooo well until the word 'clone' popped up lol. For $400 you can still buy a really nice genuine watch 👍 Thanks for watching 👍👍
stop de persen, je bent Nederlands? Daar had ik niet bij stilgestaan
😂 Nee man, ik ben een Engelse man. Ik woon al 18 jaar in Nederlands
@@HorologyBiology Vandaar dat ik je accent niet als Nederlands herkende 😁 Vanuit waar repareer je horloges?
Yes, I have bought my green version from a flipper, 568€, I am not proud of it. But my dream watch is a fifty fathoms, so I had no choice... 😅
178 over retail, could be worse I suppose
You were better of buying a good replica fir that price.
Too plastic looking for me.
How dare you. Bio-Ceramic you mean! 😅😂😂😂😂 Thanks for watching 👍
