Pinto Beans! Followed a close second by Black Beans. Nothing like having a Bean soup and eating with freshly made flour tortillas, some stoneground salsa would be great accompaniment!
Red speckled beans. Use it for green beans and dry beans. I'm in South Africa. Not sure what you guys call it in the US. I'm also trying a bean that they grow in North and Central Africa. One name is Bambara nuts. Apparently it has something like a peanut growing underground as well as beans above ground. Everything of the plant is edible.
Black-eyed Peas do the best here, but Pintos are my favorite. I'm crossing the Perennial Wild Kidney Bean with the Agate Pinto bean in order to try to produce a Perennial Pinto Bean (bush and pole). If I see it working after the F2 generation, then I'm going to make the same type of perennial kidney bean cross with Black-eyed peas, Black Beans, Kidney Beans, etc. I also want to create a perennial shade bean (shade beans are what the Indians planted with the corn) to go along with the perennial corn the Land Institute is working on. Maybe one day we can have a perennial 3 sisters garden with some Seminole pumpkins as the squash! Wouldn't that be great!
David, the only suggestion I can think of concerning beans may not be so applicable for you. You see, I am really, really old and unable to do all the bending and stooping down when planting beans so I use a pvc pipe with large enough diameter for the beans to pass down easily. I just drop a seed down the pipe to whatever spacing from a standing position....
Nope your not. My problem is I live on a quarter acre lot and my house fits in most of it so I have little area to grow. My husbands keeps asking why? My answer. Because these seeds will encourage you to decide to move onto bigger land.
Not sure if I should admit this , but I feel this is a safe place. I have a bean obsession . There I said it. I have gallon jars as in not sure how many of just beans. I save them all . I even grow beans that are too pretty to eat. I'll be harvesting mine in the next week or two. I was good this year and only planted beans we eat all the time. Black turtle , light red kidney and Vt. cranberry for the dried beans and dragons tongue ( never thought to grow them as a dried bean ) , purple podded pole and a green bean that I've been saving seeds and replanting for years. Seemed like a year to experiment less and grow food for putting up. I'm in Vt. , but I bet you could grow many of the beans I grow here. I'd be more than happy to send you a useful amount of any you might like to try. Just send a sample pack your way if interested. Your garden is amazing David. Its taken me years to get mine where I needed it to be. Just got my amaranth from your daughters seed store. I have amaranth , but the obsession goes beyond beans. And I sort of like supporting a new business venture started by good people.
A friend is letting us borrow their big tiller tomorrow and my husband is off so tomorrow is family gardening day!… that was probably the best plug for a t-shirt design I have ever seen 😂
I feel like I’ve grown as a person watching your videos. I used to be very concerned about whether I was “supposed” to be doing the garden stuff a certain way. But this made things more frustrating. I was “foisted by my own petard,” as they say. But thanks to you I’ve started to jettison said petard (one day I will figure out what a petard actually is) and focus on experimentation rather than perfection. I’m in 7a up here in E. Tennessee and after watching this I’m thinking why the heck not; I’m going to give some beans a shot. Thanks for what you do, David the Good.
You're exactly right. After more than 30 years of gardening, I've realized that it's not about what's "right" or "wrong". Every system has its pros and cons. The best thing we can do is take the best ideas from each system and apply them to our specific environment and context.
Sell some David's buscuit beans" if you get a weird cross. Lol! Ps love seeing.the little ones on.video. reminds me of when my daughter was 5. I said to her, " Honey, im gonna miss you today when I'm at work." She replied, "Daddy, I'm gonna try my hardest to miss you too."
I never thought I'd see the day you became a Quitter, it saddens me. Now I'll have to go buy some more seeds. Thank you for the great videos and also for giving me a reason to shop for more seed.
LMAO! I have a seed buying addiction too David! I just can't help myself........ I want more, more, MOOOORRRREEEEEEE!!!!!! The dragon tongue beans / pinto type beans are delicious! Great flavour baked or fried. yum
Anyone that is willing to rescue an animal, despite their feelings about it, good for them... so good for you!! As far as all the negative Neds and Nancys out there.... I have learned more usable, practical stuff about gardening from you than anyone else and it is because of your willingness to flexibility and change and sharing that with us. So long live David the Good!! May your reign live long and prosper!! Too much?? 😆 And that little girl is precious..looks just like her mommy! Don't ever stop doing what you do.
I have a big pile of seed packets just like that, except mine are in a big freezer bag.. I look at them a couple times a year, but it's weird how I always seem to look at them and it's not the right time to plant them.. And If I DO find something interesting that I can plant now, I notice the date says, " packaged for 2003".. 😐.
Missed the Goodstream, but as always IRIE Goodstream here, lol...you adopted the black cat and you say you're allergic, what Dads won't do to please their younguns, of which I mention AWESOME you include the two youngest of your Good Children! we live on a dirt road , people dump their pets here too . we now have 3 cats and 2 dogs ive had them all spayed except the one boy cat and he got neutered . I love them all , they all live inside with my wife and I , though we have 13 acres so they all go out everyday at will . I too am allergic to cats ...............
We usually eat pintos. You had me cracking up with “I’m allergic to cats” because I am too. And dogs. But I worked as a veterinarian Tech, helped run an animal rescue, had fosters as well as my own pets and did pet sitting. You get used to it. Lol!
The dragon tongues grow great for me here in central VA. These things produce super great for me even with melon vines all over them, I dont know how they'll do for you but I hope they do really well there too.
I say if your intuition is speaking try it. You never know, I got tomatoes all the way to December from a midsummer planting last year in zone 8 in Mississippi then it snowed for 5 days out of nowhere in Feb. It's always crazy in the South but sometimes crazy is really entertaining and just works out.
The “Impulse Buying” I can relate to. It’s good to know that I am not the only one with this “illness”. I hide them in the freezer from the wife. The Dragon’s Tongue is an excellent bean by the way. I am in zone 6 and have planted beans this time of the year and we have always gotten to harvest them , two weeks later we get a frost !
So, you're the reason all the seeds are sold out all the time! Every darn seed shop I go to is sold out of everything I want. I end up having to buy from questionable sellers on ebay. On the plus side, I am going to plant some orca beans & pinto beans. I am just about to start harvesting my main crop of jackson wonder bush beans. I live in a desert region so I can plant beans all year round. I was thinking of also getting some tepary beans for next summer. We get _no_ rain in the summer and often no/sparse rain in the spring or fall either. Sometimes we don't even get any in winter. So it occurred to me, why not start growing desert plants? So, I got some wolf berry seeds, dragon fruit, prickly pair, & orcas. I already had jackson wonder beans and that's what got me really excited about desert crops. I didn't water them more than once a month in the dead dry heat of summer and they were fine. So, I'm thinking I will just plant the seeds for fall/winter and let them sprout naturally and rely on the desert climate/special landscaping techniques I learned recently. Like digging a basin and planting in the basin; digging a trench next to your squash etc. to collect what little rainfall there is and put it to maximum use.
It’s the perfect time to plant dry beans here! I wish I had the bed space but I’m in a neighborhood area and have limited space, so all of my space is going towards fall crops that will winter over in GA zone 8. Can’t wait until we buy a bigger piece of land and I can do things like this!
In NC Florida near Gville and LOVE dragon tongue so much. Quickest to grow, reliable, pretty, yummy and can harvest before bugs get too bad. I didn't think about growing it now but I bet I can. Thanks. Now I have to go repair the hog fences the deer tore down this morning. After they ate all my sweet potato and squash and pumpkin leaves but not the weeds! The two adults jumped the fence but their offspring just rammed it and broke the plastic ties holding the fence up WITH ALL the tomatoes on it. Darn, deer are destructive - the dog scared them AFTER they ate it all so we got to watch the destruction. I'm thinking electric fence soon. You will love the dragon tongues!
Purple Hulls are one of my favorites. I grew up eating pintos as green beans. So tasty! I started saving my seeds in black photo storage boxes. No sunlight gets to them and they look great sitting on the bookcase. By the way, mice seem to love eating my purple hulls before I can get to them. You may be very thankful for the new cat!
@@davidthegood haha we adopted a dog a month ago and we can't decide on a name either. We keep joking he will be called pup forever 😆 Purrslane is so cute!
David the bad? Nonsense! David the Great. Your "Compost Everything" video inspired me to get gardening. I look forward to purchasing the Grocery Row Gardening book.

Pam says- Lovely to see small Buddy Holly and your wife's mini me. My favorite bean is Camellia Brand Red Kidney beans from Winn Dixie. We have a woods with a rabbit and several other forest dwellers. Haven't gotten beans past six inches in years. Poof they're gone. So I'm working on sweet potato greens in high pots.
ok I have the same problem with seeds, never seems like you have enough! Now "IF" we have the SHTF and the crazy turns to nightmare you will be glad you bought those seeds...lol
Hey David I know you said you don’t have the trellis space but if you can throw a sunflower next to a snow pea it will work with the time we have left as long as it’s a mammoth variety you can throw 3-4 peas around them, works great
I live in north east Florida, can I dig up the blueberry bushes in my yard and transplant to a dedicated bed in my garden? If so when and how? Also how should I prepare the bed?
Beans are excellent to grow but the work to plant and harvest dried beans takes a ton of time to get a few lbs of beans. I tried this. I'm convinced beans would be best but they require a seeder and combine. Butternut squash effortlessly produce massive calories that only need to be rinsed and crated. Potatoes and better yet sweet potatoes are also effortless for storing food. Tetsukabuo squash. The apocalypse squash.
Yeah, I grow Seminoles for the apocalypse. I know what you mean about the beans. We grew and harvested black-eyed peas before and it was quite time-consuming. On the upside, though, you get protein, unlike with winter squash/pumpkins.
@@davidthegood There are plans from uc Davis I think to convert a old chipper shredder to a mini combine so you can feed dried harvested plants whole and separate dried beans from refuse. I never tried it but that would be the cheapest solution. Other than that I considered hiring guys who have the equipment to grow and harvest soybeans to grow a 4 acre field of pintos, keep a couple hundred lb bags and sell the rest to pay him.
Cute kitten karma coming your way. Good move by a great dad. My rescue puppies enjoy black-eyed peas with their kibble. Pre-ordered e-book and grateful. I'm on to biscuits now:)
Im glad to hear u jam man!! Ur definitely our favorite gardening channel! Do you have any videos on composting, other than your most recent, with the pumpkins that started growing out of your compost? Still searching ur vids as I write this
"drier this time of year..." Aside from tropical storms and hurricanes! I only lost a beautiful pigeon pea to Fred. Was to bushy. Snapped off at the 5" base. The skinny one down the row about 10' is fine.
Have you said when the next Jack Broccoli novel is coming out? If you have and I missed it, sorry! We really enjoyed the first one; it's now on our family's homeschool literature list for high school to add some fun variety to the choices!
Thanks for watching. What are your favorite dry beans?

I live in north east Florida, can I dig up the blueberry bushes in my yard and transplant to a dedicated bed in my garden? If so when and how? Also how should I prepare the bed?
Brilliant my friend! We will quickly learn how to read so that we can buy / read your book. How did you do that commercial, super funny
Ah the young and their strong backs, I'm 72 and have been dropping beans down a length of pipe for the last 3 decades
Cute kitten karma coming your way. Good move by a great dad. My rescue puppies enjoy black-eyed peas with their kibble.
Pre-ordered e-book and grateful. I'm on to biscuits now:)
Thank you very much, John.
I need to plant Beano seeds !!!!
Mmmmm biscuits. Navy biscuits even.
I have found all cowpeas are aphid magnets, but they give a crop before the aphids are a problem.
David, Love seeing your children. It would be great if you could get all children with you & Racheal and let us see your entire family.
Thanks. I try to mostly keep them off camera, but sometimes the little ones wander out when we're shooting.
I understand, ThankU for replying.
The cats for protection luv it it knows you
chufa is very well know in Florida , but only as an invasive lawn weed
Im glad to hear u jam man!! Ur definitely our favorite gardening channel! Do you have any videos on composting, other than your most recent, with the pumpkins that started growing out of your compost? Still searching ur vids as I write this
Yes, a lot on composting. Thank you.
"drier this time of year..." Aside from tropical storms and hurricanes! I only lost a beautiful pigeon pea to Fred. Was to bushy. Snapped off at the 5" base. The skinny one down the row about 10' is fine.
Panthers are good luck, they even start putting up decorations of them in October.
Have you said when the next Jack Broccoli novel is coming out? If you have and I missed it, sorry! We really enjoyed the first one; it's now on our family's homeschool literature list for high school to add some fun variety to the choices!
Oh, and I have a seed buying problem too...
The dragon tongue beans are so good as a green bean. I haven't tried them as a dry bean.
