Pinto Beans! Followed a close second by Black Beans. Nothing like having a Bean soup and eating with freshly made flour tortillas, some stoneground salsa would be great accompaniment!

Red speckled beans. Use it for green beans and dry beans. I'm in South Africa. Not sure what you guys call it in the US. I'm also trying a bean that they grow in North and Central Africa. One name is Bambara nuts. Apparently it has something like a peanut growing underground as well as beans above ground. Everything of the plant is edible.

Black-eyed Peas do the best here, but Pintos are my favorite. I'm crossing the Perennial Wild Kidney Bean with the Agate Pinto bean in order to try to produce a Perennial Pinto Bean (bush and pole). If I see it working after the F2 generation, then I'm going to make the same type of perennial kidney bean cross with Black-eyed peas, Black Beans, Kidney Beans, etc. I also want to create a perennial shade bean (shade beans are what the Indians planted with the corn) to go along with the perennial corn the Land Institute is working on. Maybe one day we can have a perennial 3 sisters garden with some Seminole pumpkins as the squash! Wouldn't that be great!

David, the only suggestion I can think of concerning beans may not be so applicable for you. You see, I am really, really old and unable to do all the bending and stooping down when planting beans so I use a pvc pipe with large enough diameter for the beans to pass down easily. I just drop a seed down the pipe to whatever spacing from a standing position....

Not sure if I should admit this , but I feel this is a safe place. I have a bean obsession . There I said it. I have gallon jars as in not sure how many of just beans. I save them all . I even grow beans that are too pretty to eat. I'll be harvesting mine in the next week or two. I was good this year and only planted beans we eat all the time. Black turtle , light red kidney and Vt. cranberry for the dried beans and dragons tongue ( never thought to grow them as a dried bean ) , purple podded pole and a green bean that I've been saving seeds and replanting for years. Seemed like a year to experiment less and grow food for putting up. I'm in Vt. , but I bet you could grow many of the beans I grow here. I'd be more than happy to send you a useful amount of any you might like to try. Just send a sample pack your way if interested. Your garden is amazing David. Its taken me years to get mine where I needed it to be. Just got my amaranth from your daughters seed store. I have amaranth , but the obsession goes beyond beans. And I sort of like supporting a new business venture started by good people.

I feel like I’ve grown as a person watching your videos. I used to be very concerned about whether I was “supposed” to be doing the garden stuff a certain way. But this made things more frustrating. I was “foisted by my own petard,” as they say. But thanks to you I’ve started to jettison said petard (one day I will figure out what a petard actually is) and focus on experimentation rather than perfection. I’m in 7a up here in E. Tennessee and after watching this I’m thinking why the heck not; I’m going to give some beans a shot. Thanks for what you do, David the Good.

You're exactly right. After more than 30 years of gardening, I've realized that it's not about what's "right" or "wrong". Every system has its pros and cons. The best thing we can do is take the best ideas from each system and apply them to our specific environment and context.

I sprouted beans I saved from last year and planted them as soon as germination was evident (just to avoid gaps since I wasn't sure how germination would go) and they just about all germinated. These things produce super great for me even with melon vines all over them, I dont know how they'll do for you but I hope they do really well there too.

So, you're the reason all the seeds are sold out all the time! Every darn seed shop I go to is sold out of everything I want. I end up having to buy from questionable sellers on ebay. On the plus side, I am going to plant some orca beans & pinto beans. I am just about to start harvesting my main crop of jackson wonder bush beans. I live in a desert region so I can plant beans all year round. I was thinking of also getting some tepary beans for next summer.
We get _no_ rain in the summer and often no/sparse rain in the spring or fall either. Sometimes we don't even get any in winter. So it occurred to me, why not start growing desert plants? So, I got some wolf berry seeds, dragon fruit, prickly pair, & orcas. I already had jackson wonder beans and that's what got me really excited about desert crops. I didn't water them more than once a month in the dead dry heat of summer and they were fine. So, I'm thinking I will just plant the seeds for fall/winter and let them sprout naturally and rely on the desert climate/special landscaping techniques I learned recently. Like digging a basin and planting in the basin; digging a trench next to your squash etc. to collect what little rainfall there is and put it to maximum use.

    • @davidthegood
      @davidthegood  3 роки тому

"why not start growing desert plants" That's the way to do it. Start with that thrives in your climate, then move out from there.

Thanks. Now I have to go repair the hog fences the deer tore down this morning. After they ate all my sweet potato and squash and pumpkin leaves but not the weeds! The two adults jumped the fence but their offspring just rammed it and broke the plastic ties holding the fence up WITH ALL the tomatoes on it. Darn, deer are destructive - the dog scared them AFTER they ate it all so we got to watch the destruction. I'm thinking electric fence soon. You will love the dragon tongues!

Hey David I know you said you don’t have the trellis space but if you can throw a sunflower next to a snow pea it will work with the time we have left as long as it’s a mammoth variety you can throw 3-4 peas around them, works great

I live in north east Florida, can I dig up the blueberry bushes in my yard and transplant to a dedicated bed in my garden? If so when and how? Also how should I prepare the bed?

Beans are excellent to grow but the work to plant and harvest dried beans takes a ton of time to get a few lbs of beans. I tried this. I'm convinced beans would be best but they require a seeder and combine.
Butternut squash effortlessly produce massive calories that only need to be rinsed and crated. Potatoes and better yet sweet potatoes are also effortless for storing food.
    Tetsukabuo squash. The apocalypse squash.

Yeah, I grow Seminoles for the apocalypse. I know what you mean about the beans. We grew and harvested black-eyed peas before and it was quite time-consuming. On the upside, though, you get protein, unlike with winter squash/pumpkins.

@@davidthegood There are plans from uc Davis I think to convert a old chipper shredder to a mini combine so you can feed dried harvested plants whole and separate dried beans from refuse. I never tried it but that would be the cheapest solution.
Other than that I considered hiring guys who have the equipment to grow and harvest soybeans to grow a 4 acre field of pintos, keep a couple hundred lb bags and sell the rest to pay him.

"drier this time of year..." Aside from tropical storms and hurricanes! I only lost a beautiful pigeon pea to Fred. Was to bushy. Snapped off at the 5" base. The skinny one down the row about 10' is fine.

The dragon tongue beans are so good as a green bean. I haven't tried them as a dry bean.
