i really appreciate Ai Wei Wei , not only as a artist but also as a social activist His loyalty to his own art work and himself makes him such an unique person . He also has strong determination to change China into a better country ,that's why he is the greatest artist of our generation
Wow, this is astonishing. Absolutely worth to watch. " It’s only when Art connects to ordinary feelings and ordinary common sense that It become more powerful." from Ai weiwei, A true fearless artist for his people. I'm proud of him. The way he talks make me want to follow him.
As much criticism as he gets, his works personally MOVE me. (John Green at vlogbrothers did a reaction to the ai weiwei exhibition about the earthquake) and i never felt so haunted by a thing/art etc. I'm really grateful for the kind of work that he does.
It's really good. Absolutely accurate reflection of historical events on artist's life. And Ai Weiwei is such a great personality. Perfect and brave for his place and time.
A common man who stands up ,face uncovered, and challenges those who would suppress thought and deeds. Your art, heart and thoughts lead us all, around the world !
I nearly lost my faith, believing in heros hanging around on planet earth. But with every little thing, I ´m reading, watching and hearing about Ai Wei Wei, my hope´s growing and my faith is coming back. We need more heroes like him, and than, perhaps, the human race won´t be already losted.
I’m speechless, breathless.... what a unique life, inspiring to the core, amazing and deep movie, thank you from the bottom of my heart to the artist and each person who had a hand in bringing this story to life for all to know and get to love and appreciate💐✨🦋🌺🌸🙏🏻
Those sunflower seeds are truly amazing. I had no idea how much work went into them. They sound wonderful when they walk on them, and probably feel good in the hand.
As a Chinese, glad some many of you had watched it . i feel it is so important that the world can know the real china. so many people are suffering from a lot of things. yes we have the world largest population. but we don't have real freedom or human right compared to other countries. we feel so shameful about our party, our gov. but actually, no one could impact it. but we are trying everything we could. hopefully, in some near future, we could use facebook, twitter, ig, snapchat or other social media as other people in the world. that is the goal of our generation. our generation should fight for. we need more rights
as he says, lets wait the day china collapses completely, even the geopolitical map will shrink drastically, and then perhaps the terrorist communist party will realise on what they did was creating a mere horror
Let's not talk about Ai WeiWei for the time being. I don't know why but I feel like the western democracy won't work in China, at least not at the moment. A strong administration is necessary to keep the people together. Without the tight regulation, I don't really think China would grow so fast. Look at Philippines, India or any other Latino and South-Asian countries except Singapore (which is basically built by Britain). In fact, in the development of most countries, being regulated under a dictatorship is an important phase which they can't be skipped. Without "the Great Fire Wall of China", which provides an isolated internet environment, China won't have companies like Tencent , Alibaba or Baidu (they could've got beaten by their American counterparts very easily) which are now world-leading high-tech companies and have contributed a lot to the Chinese economy. These huge companies have lifted millions out of poverty. I reckon the so-called democracy and arts are still too pricey to an average Chinese (if you look at the GDP per capita, even in cities like Beijing or Shanghai, it is not comparable with any developed Western economies. Chinese are poorer than people in most of their neighbour countries, yet China has more influence on the world economy than any of its neighbours). I mean, there are many problems in China, especially in the humanity and culture side. But I think it is a problem in economy, if you look at the education in China, it never teaches the Chinese students to live their own life, and it is because China doesn't have that much educational resource, and it doesn't provide a well-rounded welfare system, which makes the majority of Chinese kids don't have the courage to live up their dreams. After all, China is a low-income developing country, you don't expect China to become a developed country overnight. BTW, I have lived in Australia for 5 years now (I saw you uploaded lots of vid about Adelaide, so I assume you live here too). I maybe like the fresh air and the polite people, but I have never felt like I get more freedom over here than I did in China (prob b/c I studied a CS major, and I am not an artist). Instead, I have seen plenty of side-effects that come with the western democracy. If you look at the US election, you know the voters are strongly influenced by the media, and the media is controlled by the political parties. Basically what you read on the news could well be just a story made up by the political parties. It means you maybe not voting for what you think you are voting for. So here comes to my conclusion: there is no such thing as "complete democracy" for ordinary folks. Two parties may be better because they can kind of balance off the power, but I don't think it really helps to create a democratic society more than a growing economy does (if you compare Macau and Hongkong, it becomes very obvious). One thing I agree with you tho, this generation needs to be better than the elder one. Also, I am planning on going back to China coz I think the project of XiongAn New Area is very exciting. I think if we build a stronger economy and make the average Chinese income doubled in the next few years, so everyone earns more regardless of profession, gender, and other stuff, a lot of problems will just go away naturally. (BTW, every living man is suffering from a lot of things, not just the Chinese. You are in Australia, so you know it. Australia may be better in something, but it may be worse in some other things, if you think Australia is better than China overall, well that's because it is a developed country and ppl here earns an average nearly 10 times what an average Chinese earns)
AH thank you so much for providing me with these insights. Writing a term paper on Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn and some of the perspectives in here I couldnt find in any scholarly literature! Not to mention it's all quotable because Ai said it himself! Ha! I'm in heaven!
According to my friend, the subtitles are not accurate. 3:25 what the girl said was "you are not that tall", not "you are not that special" thus her comment "you are quite ordinary" is about his height. 26:54 this documentary added "the government controls the press" in the subtitle. That is not what that guy said in the interview. So far those are the mistakes she pointed out.
He said he had no feeling about China, but sorry, the spirit of ur art works which impressed foreigners mostly from China, cannot deny something will always in your blood and raise u up.
+connie Dasta I dun think he meant he has no feelings when he said that, he definitely 'feel' but not in a way that would make him become attached emotionally to the land of China. Can you Imagine growing up somewhere that continuously traumatize you and makes you feel horrible about yourself, your value , then seeing opportunities to go somewhere else where everything in life could turn out to be completely opposite? No, none of us can comprehend, cuz we never went thru what he has experienced. (To me its kinda like a relationship ppl have with a abusive father, you feel for him, but you rly can't be that attached to him cuz theres really not much of positive emotions has came out of the time he spent with him)
我比较喜欢他父亲的《我爱这土地》 Id like to say that his father's poem are affectionate and impressive, also one was always keeping in my memo, that said: Why are the tears always in my eyes? That's because I love the land so much.
Ai Weiwei's story is fascinating !! I was privileged to see Ai Weiwei's "According to What?" exposition at Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, DC. I highly recommend seeing it.
One of the greatest living artists. Persecuted because his work is taken as an attack on the system, corruption & government. Honesty is a great FUCK YOU.
i really dont understand why there are negative comments about this ! this is inspirational and hope giving ! this is about a men standing up for human rights and hes not saying fuck u china hes saing change is needed and hes not an artist because hes revolutionary he's revolutionary because hes an artist and hes an artist because he wants to and he has talent to do so, who are you to take away that right?
I think China being such a big country, it is very hard to manage, I understand the government's position after the earthquake, they are trying to keep the people calm and not make a mess, because the more mess there are the less people they can save… I think Ai weiwei is a great artist but there are other way of changing the face of China instead of always criticizing its wrong… China has beautiful things too. I love my birth country and Im happy to see it getting better days and days(people gets out of poverty and etc.) make peace not war:))
nice, pretty convinced by your comment, I just dont like how people would label any non-western country as totalitarian, enable to govern and totally horrible, i would stand up for any country that is wrongly accused, not just PRC haha. strong and rigid socialist government has these disadvantage on human right, but as u said, it can also develop a strong econ and relatively stable and peaceful country. I think with time and a better economy things would definitely get better in china, in terms of living condition, again as you said china's growth have brought million of people out of poverty and of course has brought out this newly emerged Chinese middle class(cough*cough*another big topic). the point is not to ignore the merits that the current government deserve but also to point out all these problems of corruption and blabla. nothing will get better if we stay silent, ai wei wei is definitely a one of my all time heroes, he advocated through peaceful means what should be said about china. contemporary China is complex and its development needs the participation and cooperation of many people, not only the mainland citizen, but also the government, international organization, chinese overseas, and citizens of many countries
You said: " let other countries and other organizations to interfere the Chinese democracy process" But when....the process will end....? and the Chinese as a country can be free. Ai WeiWei a man had such enormous status internationally leading the fight for the right and justed for Chinese as citizen of this world I'm honor, and proud to be a human being.
And compelling man, as well as an artist. The Hirshhorn is showing two of Ai's installations until February 2013: Circle of Heads/Chinese Zodiac, and According to What? I'm very much looking forward to checking them out.
@powergirl7ful I admit I don't have the right to judge whether what he is doing is art. Maybe you don't read Chinese, what I was discussing before was about his role is designing Birds Nest. He is not the architect, he was a consultant. I am a architecture student (who also did a minor in fine arts in college), so I am kind of sensitive on this topic. Birds Nest was designed by Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron in collaboration with China Architectural Design & Research Group.
when he was young, he earned the right to be called an antisytemic youngman, now in this times, when he is old, he keep fighting on his way and how he think it is the best way, how many of those who call him a liar, make something to make a change?
i really appreciate Ai Wei Wei , not only as a artist but also as a social activist
His loyalty to his own art work and himself makes him such an unique person .
He also has strong determination to change China into a better country ,that's why he is the greatest artist of our generation
Wow, this is astonishing. Absolutely worth to watch.

Elegant and stunning in perspective and manifestation of his vision.
A common man who stands up ,face uncovered, and challenges those who would suppress thought and deeds. Your art, heart and thoughts lead us all, around the world !
god bless weiwei! freedom and all the love for him!!!
Ai wei wei, definitely the leader of contemporary artist~ inspiring and breath taking creativity~

greatest artist of our generation
just loooovvvveeeee his work!!!!
there's no word worthy enough to describe this man's talent..
Need more folk like him. He makes people nervous. Never stop
great documentary and Mr Ai's art is absolute masterpiece. I am simply moved by the massive seeds.
Those sunflower seeds are truly amazing. I had no idea how much work went into them. They sound wonderful when they walk on them, and probably feel good in the hand.
Then name the village and spread the credit...he's just a CEO.

I love Ai Weiwei
So glad to have watched this. Inspired.
Love from Hong Kong

That's because I love the land so much.

A tear almost left my eyes in the near end of the film...
My new fav contemporary artist!
The process of making art itself is art

Aiweiwei -- a real patriot.

It's a matter of time when the rest of people catch up with the thoughts, but someone has to get it started. QUESTIONING THINGS AND SPEAK UP

He has a very interesting concern on surveillance camera but the truth is that this device may not be only "looking at him" though he is famous.
