I have watched countless “productivity app” videos and they’re all the same, I never find anything new. Your last two videos were the first ones in AGES that actually got me to download apps and start using them daily🔥
Same here. this dudes legit, sad im just finding out about his channel. Been binge watching all his videos lately lol
Heard about the strict lockdown in China (have also seen your routine video as well). Hope you are keeping well. Just want to wish you best health and let you know that I eagerly wait for your videos and you inspire me to do so many things. Stay safe, looking forward to more such useful videos ❤
Thanks so much Vicky! We're hanging in there for now, but I'm doing much better than others because I have AMAZING AND SUPPORTIVE VIEWERS 😉
2:51 HSL stands for 'Hue, Saturation and Light' (More commonly found as HSV or HSB, where Light is replaced for 'Value' or 'Brightness' but they have the same functionality). These are the values that you see in most color wheels found in apps like Photoshop, Clip Studio Paint, Procreate, etc. (Artists and designers use it the most)
You're the best. Awesome video again. To be honest, I can't find my favourite app.
Another awesome vídeo. Thanks Jeff.
U should do an dedicated vídeo to Automator hehe
I honestly just found out about Automator and I can't wait to play around with it more!
@@JeffSu Yes, can't wait for that video! I use Toggle Alfred, but never got to trying their workflows bc they seemed too complicated (and they're only available for premium users)
Great list. I’d also add default folder x for better save options. Customisable and means you save things much quicker in relevant folders.
Dude, each app you recommend is always the best app in its field and the best fit for my needs. And I'm saying this about all your videos. God knows i never watch productivity videos but yours are just different. Much love.
I love some of the new content you are putting out - keep it up!
Thank you Andrew! No worries I definitely am not stopping my previous types of content either! 😁
Hi Jeff, I really like mac app series! Would love a part 3. I have a question, do you have a better alternative than Preview apps (especially for image viewing), greatly appreciated!
Part 3 will focus on well-being apps 😁! For image viewing it really depends what you want to do with the image!
Used most of it but last automator tool was AMAZING. Please make a separate video on more automator workflows. Would love to see them and use in my workflow.
Also try out SIP for colour picker. Very handy menu bar mac app.
Bonus app - Unsplash Wallpaper - Menu bar wallpaper app to auto change the wallpaper every hour/day
Hazel moves my downloaded account statements into the right folder and renames them to something that makes sense to me. It takes a bit of time to set up, but once it's up and running, it works like a charm!
Hey Jeff. I just discovered you this morning, and I really appreciate this video and the one from last week. I saw that you showcased some classic reading (Harry Potter) as well as one of my favorite UA-camrs (Ali Abdaal). I'm happy to be a new subscriber. Thank you for the help finding some new apps to help stay ahead. Cheers
Awesome video man!!!!! I can’t wait to try out Downie!!! Also my favourite Automator workflow that I use is creating an “app” that I can quickly open via Alfred which makes a prompt comes up asking me for a destination folder on my Mac and then once select it it’ll actually create my entire video editing folder structure for me at that destination folder (videos, music, project files, drafts, exports *ton sub folders*, etc). I love it and saves me so much time accumulatively day to day!
OH WOW this is AMAZING Sebastian! Do you mind if I feature it in my Alfred video (giving you credit of course)?
So basically this you use this workflow instead of duplicating a folder?
@@JeffSu omg yes!!! I would love that. If you’d like I can send you the actual workflow that I use with the folder structure and everything, you can even just give it to your audience as a download if you’d like! Want me to shoot you an email?
Awesome video as always! Looking forward to your alfred tips & tricks hehehe
I use Automator to convert .HEIC files I AirDrop from my iPhone to my Mac into a .JPG
Oh wow this is a GREAT use case! I have taken a screenshot of this so I can credit you if/when I make an Automator video 😁
"Stay, as per usual, for the memes" 😂😂😂 i totally cracked at this one (after rewatching your Thanos intro like 3 times)!
Glad to see you recommend Downie. One of my most used Apps!
Nice! Do you use it mainly for youtube as well? Or any other sites you'd recommend?
I was looking for a replacement for Internet Download Manager on Windows for Mac since a year. I searched everywhere but could not find it. Finally, I found it in this video. Also, you gave two options, Downie & Neat Download Manager. Thanks a ton.
Hey Jeff, been watching your videos from a long time, it would be nice if there is 1 video on windows productivity tools or file management.
Btw love your videos G.
Skim PDF was a real discover. I love the .skim notes export and how it's displayed in Skim app itself.
8:05 I work with a large number of files & large file sizes. Google Drive keeps crashing, disconnecting, and error with upload/download - have you ever had that issue? I'm thinking about switching to Dropbox
@@JeffSu folder totaling around 100-300 GB. I have unlimited drive, I feel like they’re stopping me from using it.
@@ShervinShares Wow those are some large folders. Honestly with large folders it's really hard to say. Have you tried breaking it up into smaller chunks like 50GB each?
@@JeffSu files are ranging from 0-5GB within these folders. There’s just like 800 files per folder. Then it throws errors and it becomes very hard to tell what was & what wasn’t synced because there are so many files
Great video! I like the use case for Automator and Documents.
However, I feel like Automator is going to be “replaced” by Shortcuts soon. Maybe not fully replaced but possible merged.
That's a VERY interesting point Brently. Do you find yourself using Shortcuts a lot more than Automator?
I have transitioned over to using my iPad more than my Macbook Air so I prefer Shortcuts…
I take advantage of the triple tap feature on my iPhone and Shortcuts to enter a Shortcuts menu to go to the top actions. Open Notion, Set a timer (so I can be on social media but set a limit easily), and record a voice memo. I always have ideas at random times, so I made it easier to get to the function I need with Shortcut instead of trying to scroll to those apps and possibly get distracted.
@@brentlylbazor I fully agree. Automator is a first-party tool and Shortcuts is a 3rd party tool that made a huge impact on users before being acquired. Since the code to make them talk together would be a massive undertaking it's much more likely that Automator will simply fade out as Shortcuts gets more and more powerful.
@@JB-fh1bb I agree that Automator will be phased out. In fact, my first action to implement the Download Folder automation was to make a note to convert it to a Shortcut. And since that is the path I'm sure Apple will take, I hope that they bring along some of Automator's best features like the "Record" function to make life easier for those that are not experts with it. More in context, an obvious Folder Action like Automator would also be very valuable.
BTW…great tip on the Download Folder automation. I don't know why I had not thought of it earlier.
I have tried IINA a couple of times but it never stuck with me. Gotta have to give one final honest try.
I remember why I did not like it. It does not play well with Rectangle. I like to `Maximize` my apps using Rectangle shortcut but IINA does not do it (different from original Mac fullscreen). Have you faced similar issues, @Jeff. Do you know how it can be fixed?
Ah..that makes sense. I don't use Rectangle and honestly I just double click to expand. And I use Moom to move the windows right (with no issues). If VLC works I'd just stick with that haha
Excellent meme execution *chef’s kiss*
And I’ll have to check out that color dropper tool! I can never get the RGB right 😂 Thanks for the video as always!
Hahahaha glad you got the meme Andrea! And yes, let me know what you think of Color Picker 😁
Hazel is totally worth getting. I have a simple Hazel script that unzips any compressed files within a series of subfolders. Huge time saver. Thanks for the tip on Fliqlo - so good!
Hey Jeff, thanks for suggesting this Neat Download Manager. However, it does not seem to be open source. What is your opinion on XDM.
Hi Naman - Never used XDM before, based on my research it seems Neat Download Manager is a decent free alternative 😁! (I didn't say it was open source in the video right? just checking)
Hey Jeff - love your content as always. Talking about fine management. What would be your finder-replacement recommendation for Macos? Love dual pane (coming from Windows)... tried Forklift, Commander One, Path Finder... but not convinced yet to purchase either of them. Thanks man!
That's a really good question! Unfortunately I can't really help since I like Finder haha
I’ve seen Automator but didn’t know what it was for. It’s a macros app 🙌😊. Thank you, Jeff!
automator literally saved my life back when I was on mac. Sadly I had to move to windows now.. But I'm waiting for the day I can move back and put all these tips to good use.
@@JeffSu I auto-categorized my downloaded Files. Moved .mkv and .mp4 files to the movies folder, and separated video production assets from personal family photographs. It took like 3 days JUST in the automator app, but it saved me like.. a months work.
Now I figure out how tf to use autohotkey.
Hey Jeff can you make something for us not so rich windows users
What's the best pdf editor with ocr capability available for Mac? Thanks!
I haven't used many of those but you can check out this list here: machow2.com/ocr-for-mac-best-software/
Great Video, thank you very much!
Can you please also make a Video for Productivity/Apps for iOS?
Any Tips for iOS PDF Reader Apps?
Hey Jeff, I’ve been a subscriber for couple of months now and I really enjoy your energy in all of your videos..! how are you holding up with the lockdown in SH? Hope you are fine 🤞🏼
Hi
Do your recommend a good junk cleaner, except ' clean my mac' because it is very expensive (AUD 150).
thanks for this bro.. can you make another video focusing on downie.? thank you
Hi MC Max - Probably not an entire video since there aren't that many features haha. Are you running into issues?
Can i open different pdfs in Skim as Tabs in the application like Adobe reader?
Hi Jeff,
Do you know any application to catalog files from external disks and then allow us to do a search of which disk each file is on? If it's free it would be great.
Hey Jeff, love your content. Mate been meaning to ask and apologies if I missed it, what video editing software do you use and screen share?
I use final cut pro and Clean Shot X! (linked in the description). For the rest of my gear: www.jeffsu.org/gear/
Is there Skim PDF Reader for Windows? Or some similar alternative?
I'm a Windows user and I really like your content, even if it's for another operating system. I was simply delighted with the Downie app. Do you have an alternative similar to Windows with the same characteristics that Downie offers?
Congratulations on the content. Hug from Brazil
I'm sure there are a BUNCH of options for Windows (I think overall there are just more apps developed for Windows). I would check out Kevin Stratvert's channel since he's the Windows PC expert!
hey liked the video but what is a quick and dirty way to take all my .pdfs and get them either on iCloud or a thumb drive off my local drive?
I can see you were a hardcore pc user in the past life like me. I have used a couple of your windows inspired recommendations like the alttab app and now the app that closes app when windows are closed lol.
Tried out IINA (have always used VLC). The one key shortcut I don't see is Command+F for full screen. Does this really not exist or am I missing something.
Interesting, I usually just double click the menu bar. But now you got me curious....
Hi Jeff. Don't know why, but since the beginning of this year Spotlight can no longer find files inside Google drive for desktop. I have a MB pro M1 running Monterey, and my husband has an MB pro Intel based running High Sierra. We've tried a number of ways on the internet, but none have worked so far. And spotlight was one of the best things about file management on Mac. Do you happen to have any solution for that? Thanks!
So I use Alfred instead of spotlight, and there's a way to set up alfred so that you can search Google Drive for desktop
Very cool apps! Great choices.
FYI for color picker, folks are going to want to change that shortcut to something other than the default print key combo.
That's a good point! I just realized I never had an issue since I never had the need to print (at home)
yes... printing is becoming more rare and rare. but not sure about that shortcut.
Hiya, I am new to this channel and been using Macs for while, but never really invested the time in shortcuts, productivity etc, with the death of my 27inch intel (RIP Buddy), now discontinued, I replaced with the base studio model, as I do drawing tablets, some video and photo editing (hobbyist) ...but was determined to ensure I use this Mac right.... two of your videos in and I am already 100% more organised then before. Would it be possible to have like a print out of your regular Mac shortcuts. My memory not the best, be great for reference printed out on the side, thanks for the videos, please can we have more :) xxx
That's awesome to hear Susie!
To be honest, I never found printouts helpful (I just force myself to practice and google it when I forget). If you remember better with printouts, I recommend just putting the ones you like the most in a word doc!
@@JeffSu Thanks so much, can I ask a cheeky question ? I used to have CleanmyMac on my old iMac, Apple said not to have it on there, what is the best solution for cleaning up old files etc, to keep everything running smoothly, thank you xxxx
Hi Jeff, that's a cool Jacket, what brand is it? Thanks! Great videos as always!
@@JeffSu any chance of getting a link to it? Would love to see if I can find something similar!
@@JeffSu Thanks Jeff, couldn't find it but appreciate you taking the time to respond!
Hi, kindly suggest me the best NTFS app for mac. Please am struggling with files transfer between pc and mac thanks.
@@JeffSu am a photographer so I used to transfer files from windows user to Mac user. some times I cant copy files from Mac to NTFS External HDD. so I need some solution for this. Thanks.
Hey! HSL makes color using the color, the brightness, and the luminance, each of these in a bar that you can slide, it's pretty handy for making the color you want, LCH is quite similar but the colors are a little different, I prefer HSL
Great video Jeff as always!
I don't even own a Mac, but I watched the whole video
We NEED a video for us Windows users!
re: IINA-thank you, so much. I've been using VLC, and it's great, but Iina is just the next generation. Evolved. Just the smoother scrubbing alone makes it worthwhile.
Do you know Hazel app for mac… it hooks into automator but with a friendly UI. It is a lot more userfriendly than automator… cant seem to get used to automater and how it does things. And adding and deleting rules is much more friendly than the way you showed in automator. I would not have know how to delete a rule in automator
Yes I heard about that! Haven't had a chance to use it yet. Thanks for reminding me Sophie 😁
Another great video!! Productivity to the moon! I love bartender - but hate that you need to pay for each upgraded version.
Oh I've only had to pay once so far...so when they release 5 we have to pay again? 😅
@@JeffSu haha yes :P I think they offered me a 30% upgrade discount from version 3 to 4. Looking forward to your next video!
@@namika7878 Oh...dang haha I guess we're both going to have to pay moving forward 😂
Thank you for this amazing video, Jeff. Also let us know if making such video for window users is feasible for you or not?
You have something for editing PDFs? or a link to a video if you have already covered this.
@@JeffSu The ability to edit the PDF directly. With preview I can copy the item and paste into something else. Without have something paid like adobe. I have not be able to edit the PDF right there.
Hi, how did you enable horizontal scroll on skim?
@@JeffSu I did enable that, but it doesn't`t work with the mouse wheel. Only with cursor scroling scrol bar. Thanks! :)
@@matejs8010 Do you have a horizontal scroll on your mouse wheel? I'm using the MX Master 3s so there's a horizontal scroll built in!
Big thanks, now i found the problem. My mouse doesn't have horizontal scrolling built in. But i solved this problem, by holding shift key while scrolling. Thanks again, your content is amaizing, it helps me to stay productive in my school work. Keep going!
Okay, so you know what HSL is now, but I didn't see anyone yet explain why LCH is a separate option in the Color Picker 🤓 ...Luminance-Chroma-Hue is a color model I've seen used more by designers/teams who prioritize accessibility because of how it calculates luminance and saturation. Some say that model is closer to how the majority of humans perceive color (as opposed to some color models that produce subtleties that a minority can distinguish). HSL and LCh are both great. The fact that the color picker app accounts for all of those models is a Green Flag, definitely going to install 🌈🌟 As always, thanks for sharing the Hot Tips 🔥
I loved when he said, i uncheckd this and this, because I don’t know what they are 😂😂😂😂
