  • Jam Gadang is a clock tower which is a marker or icon of Bukittinggi City, West Sumatra, Indonesia. This clock tower rises 27 meters high and its construction was inaugurated on July 25 1927. There are large clocks with a diameter of 80 cm on four sides of the tower so it is called Jam Gadang, a Minangkabau word which means "big clock".
Jam Gadang was the location of important events around the time of Indonesian independence, such as the raising of the red and white flag (1945), the Nasi Bungkus Demonstration (1950), and the murder of 187 local residents by the Indonesian military on charges of being involved in the Revolutionary Government of the Republic of Indonesia (1959).
The basic size of the Jam Gadang building is 6.5 x 6.5 meters, plus the basic size of the stairs which is 4 meters wide, so the overall basic size of the building is 6.5 x 10.5 meters. The inside of the clock tower consists of five levels, with the top level being where the pendulum is stored.
There are four clocks with a diameter of 80 cm each on the Clock Tower. The clock is mechanically driven by a machine imported directly from Rotterdam, Netherlands via the port of Teluk Bayur. The movement and clock face are located one level below the top level. There are only two Gadang clock machines in the world, the other is the Big Ben clock in London. On the bell, the watchmaker's factory, Vortmann Recklinghausen, is written. Vortman is the last name of the watchmaker, Benhard Vortmann, while Recklinghausen is the name of the city in Germany where the watch movement was produced in 1892.
Since its founding, this clock tower has undergone three changes to the shape of its roof. Initially erected during the reign of the Dutch East Indies, the roof was round with a statue of a rooster facing east on top. This form is an insinuation that the people of Kurai, Banuhampu, and Sungai Puar wake up early when the cock crows.
During the Japanese occupation, the roof shape was changed to resemble a Shinto shrine. In 1953, after Indonesia's independence, the roof on the Jam Gadang was changed to the gonjong or roof shape of the traditional Minangkabau house, Rumah Gadang.
