I know interacting with the comments section is one of the best parts about this journey, but if you haven’t already I’d highly recommend finding someone, maybe one of your Patreon members, to proofread the comments section for you so you avoid spoilers from now on. The OP community on the whole is very welcoming and wholesome, but all it takes is one bad egg to ruin something that could happen hundreds of chapters from now. A few others who’re also documenting their OP journey have had the biggest moments in the story spoiled early by commenters, not even just by explicit comments (some comments hinted at events or used “clever” puns about events) and it ruined the mystery and emotional impact when they got to the sections. I’d hate to see that happen to you, because your general enthusiasm and the theorizing are so compelling to follow!

Oda is great at dropping information, like Ace, that afterwards you wonder why you never bothered to question it. He distracts you with so much to focus on that he is able to blindside you seemingly out of the blue.

    • @zombiehinata
      @zombiehinata 2 місяці тому +1

He'll also make you sad or angry so you miss or dismiss important info.
One segment much later on is infamous for making people get angry at one of the cast (sometimes even make them dislike them for a while) because of why they knew a certain piece of information... But if you hold your cool and look the situation doesn't quite fit what the character is claiming...
It's not until MUCH later that you learn things which can re-contexualize why this character might have been highly interested in this information enough to learn it...
Of course by this point you've forgotten about this information and even that you were angry over it because there is just so much inbetween these two points. Haha.

17:15 The best part about Oda's use of animals, is that makes the world more congruent. Yes, people have used animals to simplify their lives for ever. A strong ox to tile the fields, a fast horse to carry me around, farm animals to get renewable food, pigeons to carry messages, dogs to protect our houses, sheep to make wool clothes, and the list goes on. Using your own fantastic animals like that in the story breathes life into the world. "There's a super fast lizard in this desert, let's train them to carry messages across our desert country" is not some one-in-a-lifetime idea. A lot of people has to have thought of it, so not having that be a thing would make the world feel more artificial. A world where people have trained animals for different tasks makes it feel lived in

Buggy is probably in the top 10 most liked characters of the show, it's ok to like him. 🤡 Also the weekly breaks are tough but so is life on the sea. In current time One Piece, Oda is taking a 3 week break. Well deserved but boy are the cliffhangers mighty indeed. Each person has a million theories to talk about and the next chapter is almost always still a complete surprise to everyone. You'll probably still catch up before the final conclusion because the manga is the appropriate way to consume this content.

My best estimates for stopping points for the next few Arcs are as follows:
    Jaya: Fine as one vid.
Skypiea: End of 271, others may have better stops.
Long Ring Long Land: Fine as one vid.
Water 7: End of 349 I would say is a good pause point.
Enies Lobby: End of 399 I would say is a decent stop point.
Post-Enies Lobby: Fine as one vid
Thriller Bark: End of 459 is the best stop point for sure.
Sabaody Archipelago: Fine as one vid (is dense, maybe split it)
Amazon Lily: Fine as one vid.
Impel Down: Fine as one vid (is dense, maybe split it)
Marineford: Fine as one vid (is dense, maybe split it)
    Post-Marineford: Fine as one vid.

Not sure if it's mentioned later (at 27:00 atm), but one highlight in this part of the arc for me is Luffy and Vivi's "fight" in chapter 166. It's kind of a parallel to the scene in early Drum Island where Vivi teaches Luffy how to be a better leader and not just use fighting as a solution to everything. Now in Alabasta Luffy teaches Vivi to rely on her friends and that sometimes you just have to forgo the seamingly safe option of talking to the rebels and focus on beating the "big bad" in order to save your country. Also loved the emotions of this chapter.

15% through the journey, but when you catch up you'll want more! Sir Crocodile feels so much like a James Bond villain and I've always loved that about him.
Another point that I l've discussed with friends recently, but something unique about One Piece is that the cast is so wide and varied that everyone has a random character they just love and when you mention it you'll get at least one person totally on board with it.

  • @Aviertje

I think I've told you before, but One Piece is a marathon, not a sprint. You consume it at your own pace, and the same will naturally have to happen to whatever you choose to publish.
One aspect that is relatively stable for One Piece is that the story arcs grow longer together with Oda's experience as an author building out his world. You can sometimes tell when he was struggling to put stuff together, and then the moment where everything starts to click and fall in place like the smoothest rollercoaster ride imaginable.
As such, it is hard to outright separate arcs out into chunks sometimes, but I'm sure your helpful fans will manage.
I have no clue what it will do to your UA-cam algorithm experience, but perhaps the easiest way is to just read for a while, then record, and then publish what you recorded like a live diary of sorts. Don't stress yourself out with editing or how to combine arcs or anything, and just leave that particular issue for when you eventually finish an arc.
That is what a lot of reacters do when watching the UA-cam anime: they watched one or two episodes and upload that on a schedule. I don't see a reason why it couldn't work for your content.

This arc was great, but Ill save anything more I have to say till the next one.
WITH THAT SAID, I'm not really sure what you're asking for, but I made a little guide until chapter 597. Tried to think about the 40 chapter guideline.
Arcs are made by the fans so I tried to complete each arc based on where the story ends in each arc, not always on the cliffhangers. I know you like to talk about the story and themes versus speculation so I tried to gear it towards that. Others might want to lead more toward speculation.

      Few corrections:
Alabasta ends at 217, which makes 216 a bad stopping point. Either 217 or you can use the 218 one, though it's weird to include the first chapter of the next arc.
LRLL ends at 321. 322 is already part of W7.
I think 349 is the better stopping point in W7.

There are reasons beyond where the arc ends that I ended in those places. Arcs are created by the fans, but that doesnt always make them the best stopping places. Im aware a lot of fans like to end on a big cliffhanger because they want to see the person reviewing to be fresh in that moment, but I dont think it needs to end of a cliffhanger if there isnt enough to talk about and Shelly tends to talk about things when they happen if she feels like it. Ill add notes of that though. @@benediktmathes2528

With that said, arcs are created by the fans and are often not good stopping points. I chose to end in specific places because there is more to talk about and adds more to each section, not because I want her to speculate because I think Shelly likes to talk about the themes and stuff she loved versus speculating on a cliffhanger.@@benediktmathes2528

Shelly often comments when she has something to say so if there is a big cliffhanger in the middle of an arc I think she’ll talk about it. I don’t think every reading needs to end on a cliffhanger since, to my understanding, she likes to talk about the themes and story, not necessarily the speculation. Arcs are created by the fans and don’t always end in great places for context and feeling like a completed arc. as a lot of ppl already said, splitting arcs into different parts sounds like a good idea !! actually a lot of one piece reviewers tend to do that once they start getting to these longer arcs. i don't want you to get too burnt out, which is rlly easy w a story this long, so taking your time is perfectly fine. im gonna be keeping up w all your updates on this either way :)
i also saw a couple ppl in the comments mention getting a moderator or someone to help sift through the comments and i want to second that ! it's so easy to get even small spoilers on this series since there's information out there that has been out so long, it can almost feel like common knowledge and ppl can slip up and mention it. there's also the few ppl on here that want to ruin it for others and will outright state big spoilers. and ofc, the ppl who think they're just teasing by hinting at things not realizing how easy it is to infer what they're trying to say. so yea, if you can pls look for someone who can help you out, you def should, i rlly want someone to be able to go in spoiler-free (which is hard to be in one piece) and get the full satisfaction of a story like this !!
anyway i loved the video and im happy you're enjoying it so far :)

I suggested the splitting point last time and hope it helped. Definitely understand that it can feel very overwhelming to start reading and review a huge arc that would span over 50 chapters. Selfishly (and probably speaking for most of us) we love your talks and your journey and always want the next one out faster, but please go at a pace that you're comfortable with and don't burn out. :)
I had a quick look at the first chunk of the story after Alabasta and made some suggestions for video splitting points. Others may have some other suggestions, too, but I hope this helps. Hiding names of sagas/arcs to keep it spoiler-free.
    Saga 1
    Arc 1 218-236
    Arc 2 237-302 | Split at: 254
    Saga 2
    Arc 1 303-321
    Arc 2 322-374 | Split at: 349
    Arc 3 375-430 | Split at: 399
    Arc 4 431-441
    Saga 3
    Arc 1 442-489 | Split at 459
    Saga 4
    Arc 1 490-513
    Arc 2 514-524
    Arc 3 525-549
    Arc 4 550-580
    Arc 5 581-597

The same sea prism stone Smoker has on his weapon was used in the nets with which the Marines caught Buggy and Alvida back in Loguetown. So we know it can take different forms. Altough it's not that important.

Smoker's weapon is a Jutte, which is a blunt police weapon used in the Edo-period because swords weren't allowed inside the Shogun's palace.
Miss All-Sunday's devil fruit is sometimes translated as the Bloom Bloom fruit, because it allows her to "bloom" her body parts elsewhere.

    • @Shellyish

A Jutte! Thank you! Bloom Bloom - that make sense.

    • @maxpower2480
      @maxpower2480 2 місяці тому +1

@@ShellyishSmoker's weapon is a vastly oversized Jutte to be clear.
They were designed specifically to disarm swordsmen. (notice the hook near the hilt that could trap a sword if you twist the right way) And it's not just about the rules in the shoguns palace: There were times during the Edo period when only Noblemen and Samurai were allowed to carry swords, which meant that outlaws had a certain advantage against police. This is a tradition that carries on even today as many policemen also don't carry guns in present day Japan.
There are a couple of episodes of the One Piece Anime by the way, which cast the Straw Hats in Edo-period japan with Luffy as the village police chief, who carries a Jutte, but just resorts to punching stuff as per usual. (Jutte in hand)

Another idea is a Vlog-style video, where you read chapters until you have something that you want to discuss (or like 10 chapters if nothing urgent happened) and then record your immediate reactions. That way you can tackle big arcs step by step by sliding them up as you see fit without soft-spoilers (as in, "read until chapter 180" would likely indicate some sort of cutting point there)

8:00 If ANYTHING in One Piece seems to be a reference to another story, or to something IRL, it probably is, specially if related to pirates. Even with Oda's extremely unhealthy schedule of sleeping 3 hs a day, I don't know how he finds the time to get that knowledge, but it's there. He did not start writing One Piece in his 40s or 50s, after a life consuming media. He was 22 when the series started serializing

So i think its a great idea to record your thoughts after your reading session and release them as small bites of your journey with like 15 to 30 minute videos and then after the arc is done put it out in one or 2 parts.
Atleast thats how i would really enjoy it.

Hi Shelly! I haven't read One Piece since it was first serialized in Shonen Jump (didn't get into the live action show they just put on Netflix, but I remember liking it for the 2 years I subscribed to SJ). I've been aware that you review One Piece and just got the first 3-volume book from the library! Exclamation points because it's exciting to find another grown woman who reads manga (the older ladies at the library book group would just look at me incomprehensibly whenever I mentioned one). Now I'm the older lady, but I'll still read everything, like the Caldecott picture books from your other recent video (even though I never had kids, I like art of any kind). Probably my library doesn't buy all the One Piece "Arcs" (does that mean story arc in this context, or "advanced reader copy?" I'd love to know!) that you mention, or they quickly disappear (patrons "lose" them), so it will be fun to hear about them from your videos 😀

Hi Hi! Arcs are the stories within the longer story of any given manga. It's nice to know the starting and stopping point of any given story especially one as long as One Piece. The arcs are fan-created. I tend to search "One Piece Arcs in order" and shield my eyes from written spoilers when trying to figure out the starting and stopping points for the stories within One Piece.

Yes, the arcs from now on, with some exceptions, get longer and longer... and longer.
It's with 1 exception also not a bad thing though, so don't get worried for this.
In my opinion it really is better to take your time to appreciate the story and also the little moments instead of rushing a whole arc into 1 video.
The last finished arc was SO long, that even Oda put in clear visual stopping points in the story, with closing and opening curtains and separating the arc into acts, so don't be scared to just do that too. I'm sure people will tell you good stopping points :-)
Also I like how you always try to interpret why Oda is called GODA nowadays :D
But you are yet so far away from finding out :D The story and the reason he's called GODA has a lot to do with the whole story from chapter 1, so keep your eyes on every detail that seems interesting or maybe even off to you. In the next Arc the world building finally starts and more and more dots will appear and later connect.
And at last a "GODA seed" tip for this current arc Alabasta to just keep in mind for the future:
A certain doctor is mentioned once here, try to keep his name in mind.

You are doing great. Liked this video a lot.
Be very careful with spoilers in the comments since several of the characters you are getting to know in this arc will keep being very relevant hundreds and hundreds of chapters later. Chapter 1111 of the manga will come out next week, almost one thousand chapters later, and cheracters that you just mention on this video are prevalent to this day.
Alabasta is a very long arc, next one is lil shorter, next one is split in two so is manageable, then a couple short ones and after that most arcs are longer than Arabasta. You still have a lot of time till you encounter the really big boiz of One Piece.

Don’t push yourself too hard if you feel like it’s too many chapters to talk about or it’s too long of a video, I’d rather have a “shorter” video with your best thoughts and perceptions than a rushed 2-3h long video that’s exhausting for you to make. Besides that, people that like your content are gonna be here anyway :)

Your rate of completion is gonna jump significantly, since Oda is going on a 3 week break. Has the manga explained the differences between Paramecia, Zoan, and Logia type Devil Fruits yet? Cause now you'll have seen all three

Also, now that you're a good deal into Alabasta, this is the second really political arcs, after Drum Island with its commentary on healthcare. I have my own takes on what Alabasta, Baroque Works, and the Rebellion represent, but I'd love to hear what you have to say about it before you read anyone's interpretation on the topic.

The only pirates that are "good" we've seen so far are shanks and luffy, buggy, kuro, arlong.. every pirate ever is bad. Oh i love the band in the arm idea, even karue has it!the mummy powers as he is sand he can absorb the moisture of things, crazy. It'll be such a suprise when you read chapter 179 and figure out that now chopper is capitan, there are great stopping points in longer arcs, i'd watch a video of 8 hours one piece by shelly. There is another booktuber that reviews chapter by chapter and for wano he made an almost 9hs video. Great as allways, we'll be waiting.

The Alabasta arc really isn’t that long as far as One piece goes. There is an ar later on that is 149 chapters. Imo, it doesn’t really mater how you release videos. Depends on what is easier for you. Or if you want to go by the general preferences of your other viewers.
