It's tough to tell that to newish Mustang owners at the drag strip or a stop light though. Model for model, every Mustang is faster than the competing Camaro in a straight line. Antonio Barrueta That's untrue. Jay's emotions mainly depends on his mood or the guy he is talking with. Sometimes he's more energetic, makes some jokes. This time he had that "serious tone", but doesn't mean he isn't impressed with the car. It has a lot of great stuff what Jay is aware of. He might tend to be more of a Ford guy, but he definitely likes the car and really likes Chevrolets in general. He is an American and likes all kinds of vehicles after all...
Great video as always Jay, Boy sure wish I had the funds to send my 88 iroc 5.7-liter Factory ordered. With 7,660 original miles back to GM and have it restored. I have permanent nerve damage from spine surgery and left me disabled. So I am unable to do a restore. The car has sat for 10 years. All original except for the hood. Guess it will sit until the tires rot off lol. I really enjoy watching your videos. I can't find the words to describe how much I enjoy listening to you talk about your collection of fine machinery and history behind each one. It's fascinating. Another great video.
Will it time better than the Alpha platform Zl1 or only the next Z28 will be this car? I'm re-watching this vid after reviewing the Lightning Lap all time results from 2016 bad;, this car still out handles so many amazing machines according to that non-scientific list. This Z28 is track car and seems to be livable on the street. Thanks Jay!
Still love the 5th gen Z28s. They were truly street legal race cars. How they got this package past the legal dept and the bean counters must have been a exercise in finesse.
Ya! This beast was "Best driver's car" in Motor Trend magazine. As tested price seventy five big ones. To put todays car prices in perspective, I bought a 350 4-speed Camero in 1971 and the sticker price was just over 3,500 dollars. High test was about thirty cents a gallon too! Maybe I can try for a job at Jay's Garage so I could afford cars like this! After all, I know Jay didn't leave the keys in the ignition, but since I live in Wisconsin, it doesn't matter. Hey Jay! It's snowing in Wisconsin! How about that Job?!!?
Wow, just read the Motor Trent May article that pitted this car against the 911 Turbo S and the GT-R. And the Z28 wins around the track. Very nice. This really builds cred back to the brand, as the Boss 302 seemed to hold that title for quite some time (outrunning the M3). Now there's a vehicle that not only dominates the 302, but the new Corvette, the M3/4, the 911 Turbo S, and the GT-R. This makes things very difficult for the Corvette brass.
I've replayed that bit at 4:03 five times now and I'm hearing "This car makes down force, a hundred and fifty pounds of down force, that's four hundred more than the SS." Someone help me out and tell me I'm hearing it wrong, or that he meant to say a different figure.
Part 2. Driving a DCT is like clicking the buttons on a remote. When you execute a perfect heel/toe downshift with a manual gearbox you feel a sense of accomplishment and it makes you happy. I've owned pretty slow "traditional" sports cars that I couldn't wait to drive because they had a stick. It was always a good time. The more technology encroaches into the driving experience the more it insulates us and dulls the fun. I'll take a Mazda MX-5 Miata over a Nissan GT-R any day-EVERY day.

I am a hard working, blue collar American who served this Country in Iraq who also works like an animal every day with the hope of one day be able to afford a car like the Z/28!!! The problem is that Corporate America does their best to crush our dreams!!! We bailout GM, Chrysler etc etc but they forgot about us!!! GM, I can afford a $50,000 loan but I can not afford A $75,000 loan for a car... This is a shame GM, the Camaro was the poor man sport car along with the Mustang and Challenger now these cars are for the rich!!! Which by the way more then 75% of Americans are not...
583Ghost Greed is the American way ... America is in a way and sense, a larger version of Las Vegas for corporations and billionaires. Rich get richer, poor get poorer ...
Wow a track car that is also a street car. I think Ford did that a couple years ago and was called the Boss 302. GM always a day late and a dollar short
We have a new 2014 Camaro at our Chevrolet dealership now. I went to look at it, and before hated the new Camaro taillights, keep in mind I am probably one of the biggest Camaro fans. Love them! Especially the 5th gens. But the new taillights actually look very modern and nicely set up in real life. I now like them. Pictures don't do it justice. Still do prefer the older taillights, but the new ones are amazing looking in person.
To those complaining of the Z/28's lack of features such as a radio and air conditioning, you are really missing the point. This car is all about driving it for the sheer joy of driving. You take it to the track to challenge your skills and have fun. You want to have a fast car with GPS, air con, etc then get a Camaro SS. Leave this for the driving enthusiasts.
The fact they won't be using this paint in production i think exemplifies the kinds of issues that GM continues to have. Eat the price to make this paint a reality, it's absolutely stunning.
I think they still ruined the legacy of the camaro. Back in the Camaro's day it was a production muscle car that another guy maybe 3 houses down the street has one. We have an 81' Z28 sitting in our garage right now! It was a cheap ballsy car that tons of people had, it was available to everyone. You could buy a good one for like 10 grand. But now, this is barely any different than an exotic super car. Back in the 70's to the 80's you'd see Camaro's every day. But now, they are gonna be rare. And only a select few are going to be able to have them. Both my parents work for minimum wage, and we have an old Camaro that my Dad has had for over 30 years now. And back then he could afford it. Now, what are we gonna do? Get the new Z28? No! We can't afford it!
its the reason most kids went too the rice burners and drifting..ford Gm and Dodge said too hell with the kid a small v8 and a bare bones muscle car...In 1987 I was making about $8hr...I could afford a a 87 gt notchback 5.0 for about 11k...What kid can afford can even afford a 40k Camaro or a 75k one...The marketing guys at GM FOrd and Dodge are pulling at the pockets of the old guys like me who remember the name Camaro..5.0 Hemi..
stevefromPA2 That is all so true. Im young and going to be able to afford one, but its going to take a career in medicine to do it. And I'm drooling over this thing right now, but I know I wouldn't be able to afford it for some yrs. And I'm lucky to be able to even ever dream of affording it.
Jay Leno is one of the luckiest men alive. He's the first person outside of GM to drive the new z28 and from what I hear, GM doesn't even bother selling him cars; they just give them to him.
I like this car but at $75,000 i will stick with my 1996 camaro Z28 LT1. the Z28 was never such an expensive low production car..... it was the poor man's corvette. who can afford these prices anymore anyways, new cars are ridiculous. i think my 1996 sold for $25K something new, i bought it for $3k. its allot of performance for $3k, and it handles well. one more thing i dont really like about the 5th gen is the visibility is very poor. all other camaros had larger windows and the visibility was much better, the 5th gen has the most blind spots of any camaro ever built, its also very heavy for a camaro. my 96 is roughly a 3,300 lb car.
my 1996 has the LT1 its 285 hp and i have a PCM tune good for another 15 so its around 300. some fairly cheap simple bolt ons will easily put it north of 300, maybe a gear swap and its plenty. why is the new Z28 a $75,000 car?? the Z28 was never really cheap but it was affordable by someone with a fairly good income.. the new car being $75,000 is a rich mans toy.... also with 500 hp stock they take all of the fun out of modding the car
classic chevy formula: wait for Ford to make an awesome car, make something similar, add 2 liters, wait for chevy fans to think its the best thing since sliced bread.
Smucko Smuckovic Yes we know pushrod engines are smaller, the Ford 302 Windsor block is one of the smallest V8 engines (in gross space) that can make 500 hp. Chevy still adds displacement to gain power, where as Ford adds volumetric efficiency.
Hey dumbass, has Ford ever figured out how to make a car than can do something better than go in a straight line? Oh, that's what I thought... P.S. The Z28 smoked your Mustang Boss 302 since the GT500 can't handle worth a damn.
The Z28 ought to come standard with a set of bright driving lights! You need to see to go fast. I hate automatic transmissions with a passion!!! I totally agree with Jay Leno that full manuals are so fun. If Jay Leno were to be the CEO of GM I would be so so happy!
Wow, it’s like females can’t properly drive a standard gearbox-equipped vehicle…. What world/timeline did you come from or land in..? Women back then, were even MORE of a badass breed than females today. Vehicles/automobiles back in the day, 200+ years ago, were made for only the most peculiar of drivers/operators. It’s only as of the 21st century, that both women and men, took a whole different approach to driving, transportation, and mechanicals, etc. in general…
+daisbest It should be considering its an all new car built specifically for the purpose. It wont suprise me if the 2016 camaro ss 1le keeps up with or beats the normal gt350 so just wait to see what the new z28 does.
75k is pretty retarded considering the performance. You could go buy a Stingray or a GT500 with more horsepower, and if the "fun to drive" aspect is all you're looking for you could go buy a Scion FRS or a Subaru BRZ for 25k - and they all have air conditioning. How the hell are you going to ride a car in the summer without air conditioning comfortably? And they want to charge 75,000?
Its a street race car.. for people that have the money not a everyday car to go back n forth to work! Its not for everyone. I to thought the same about the ZL1, I bought a SS camaro and had the dealer put a supercharger to for way less than a ZL1. Now I have more HP than it and the ZR1, Its not all about HP! Its about bragging rights and history of an American Icon. If you were old enough you would saw that Ford did the same thing with the Cobra R a few years back.. It was about owning one that not many people would ever have. for the record I feel sorry for the Chumps that bought all those Cobra GT500s there's one on every corner....

Jay, gave you a "thumbs up" on this one because you are a GREAT AMERICAN for giving GM a "pump." But I wouldn't own another GM even if it was a gift. That said, the only two things I see wrong with that car is "GM" and "Z28." Good effort, you and GM, trying to make it look good.

You don't need the radio but I'd like air conditioning. No radio in mine

On a nice day this car will probably lap the ring in the high 7:20's
wow it costs more than a vette.... I used to have a Z28 and it was considered the poor man's vette... now the vette will be the poor man's Z28.
Not the same car from the 80s its now a track monster
Motor trend says they prefer this car over the GT-R Track Edition and a 911 Turbo S. Don't even compare it to the Z/28 of the yore.
Camaro has bigger engine than the Corevette
***** The GT-R is very handle than z28.
Is it me, or does Jay not seem that impressed with the Z28?
Jays a Ford guy
Antonio Barrueta That's untrue. Jay's emotions mainly depends on his mood or the guy he is talking with. Sometimes he's more energetic, makes some jokes. This time he had that "serious tone", but doesn't mean he isn't impressed with the car. It has a lot of great stuff what Jay is aware of. He might tend to be more of a Ford guy, but he definitely likes the car and really likes Chevrolets in general. He is an American and likes all kinds of vehicles after all...
That’s just jay man
Great video as always Jay, Boy sure wish I had the funds to send my 88 iroc 5.7-liter Factory ordered.
In the same boat! Took me 12 yrs to finish my Frame off.
Only got to drive it a few times been sitting forever. Too much dam pain all the time
I just bought a 2015 Challenger R/T plus Shaker B-5 pearl. It's freaking awesome my first American muscle car. I'm in love ❤️
best Camaro gen/package in my eyes. Good job GM
During this episode, Jay inconspicuously called Al fat and old haha!
The matte white should've been a production color
Will it time better than the Alpha platform Zl1 or only the next Z28 will be this car? I'm re-watching this vid after reviewing the Lightning Lap all time results from 2016 bad;, this car still out handles so many amazing machines according to that non-scientific list. This Z28 is track car and seems to be livable on the street. Thanks Jay!
the stance on the car is just scary. the way it looks from the front while driving and it's presence. i want one
Still love the 5th gen Z28s. They were truly street legal race cars. How they got this package past the legal dept and the bean counters must have been a exercise in finesse.
Should drive the new ZL1 when it comes out! That'd be a good video
They should make the steering wheel a little different then in the other models. Maybe put Z/28 instead of the bowtie
I couldn't help but think, "STOP RUBBING ON THE PAINT, JAY!!"
This makes things very difficult for the Corvette brass.
man i love that white!!
Now put the 427 logo on the hood!
I've replayed that bit at 4:03 five times now and I'm hearing "This car makes down force, a hundred and fifty pounds of down force, that's four hundred more than the SS."
Someone help me out and tell me I'm hearing it wrong, or that he meant to say a different figure.
What he means is that the SS produces lift rather than downforce.
It's cool they put a CAI in the car instead of having it as an aftermarket thing.
5:35 Haha chevy guy doesn't even know the name of the one-77, how is this possible?? Much respect for the new Z/28 and new chevy products in general but that is just an odd thing not to know as a car guy!
well that settles it im buying one.
They really need to scale this car down, to about 3300 pounds or less, Nobody wants a 4000 pound Camaro.
Guns & Gears Carbon fiber to the rescue
4 years later and you're still a jackass.
Guns & Gears 3300lbs? It's not a corvette you idiot, plus camaros are muscle cars not sports cars, they were never and never will be 3300lbs, and they don't need to be
Old camaros weighed 3200-3400 pounds.
Also didn't have several hundred pounds of safety equipment that is mandated to be in cars these days.
I saw one of these cars on used car lot for 88k. I drooled but not rich enough. I still want one now with air.🤑😀😛
I could stare at it all day. Not even started 0_0
Bring back the Trans Am!!
GM announced that this car will be priced at $75,000!!!
*****
your car is a year 94?
just, no...stop
For that price, they can go and fuck themselves!!!
583Ghost
LMAOOOOOOO
***** I am no Jay Leno, I don't have $75,000 to throw away!!!
Leave this for the driving enthusiasts.
aston 077? guessing he means the one-77
Jay please stay out of the bicycle lane with fast cars, you make us nervous.
I haven't touched a bike in years, the us I was referring to is the viewers.
I noticed that , but I believe he did that so the car ahead of him could keep the CAMERO Z/28 in the middle of the picture frame.
1,511,111 views...hahaha..how else can't wait for the new Z28?
The-Camaro -Guy88 it's amazing
I must admit, as a European, I never really liked the muscle cars but this one, man it's awesome.
The fact they won't be using this paint in production i think exemplifies the kinds of issues that GM continues to have.
Eat the price to make this paint a reality, it's absolutely stunning.
Would love to put a supercharger on that
Zr1
Frankie G 6.2l vs 7.0
This is the only muscle car I like
Aw Boooo! I wanted to see what happened when he Started to go after that Porsche!!
The tires were still probably cold.
PrometheusLoire and they were on public roads and it would take miles of high speed driving to catch the German... even if he's faster.
No! We can't afford it!
looks like ai found one furrie here :V
Rafael Schaefer
Ye,
blame inflation please. old suburbans are cheap as hell too, everything was cheap as hell compared to today
its the reason most kids went too the rice burners and drifting..ford Gm and Dodge said too hell with the kid a small v8 and a bare bones muscle car...In 1987 I was making about $8hr...I could afford a a 87 gt notchback 5.0 for about 11k...What kid can afford can even afford a 40k Camaro or a 75k one...The marketing guys at GM FOrd and Dodge are pulling at the pockets of the old guys like me who remember the name Camaro..5.0 Hemi..
stevefromPA2 That is all so true.
Jay Leno is the man... he rocks the Canadian tuxedo!
I like this car but at $75,000 i will stick with my 1996 camaro Z28 LT1. the Z28 was never such an expensive low production car..... it was the poor man's corvette. who can afford these prices anymore anyways, new cars are ridiculous. i think my 1996 sold for $25K something new, i bought it for $3k. its allot of performance for $3k, and it handles well. one more thing i dont really like about the 5th gen is the visibility is very poor. all other camaros had larger windows and the visibility was much better, the 5th gen has the most blind spots of any camaro ever built, its also very heavy for a camaro. my 96 is roughly a 3,300 lb car.
andrew donohue the new Z28 is 3800 lbs its around 500 lbs heavier then my 20 year old z28. my 4th gen also has t tops. why no t tops on the new car?
andrew donohue I agree. I'll take my 2002 WS6 convertible T/A over this any day of the week. I mean how much horse power do you really need?
my 1996 has the LT1 its 285 hp and i have a PCM tune good for another 15 so its around 300. some fairly cheap simple bolt ons will easily put it north of 300, maybe a gear swap and its plenty. why is the new Z28 a $75,000 car?? the Z28 was never really cheap but it was affordable by someone with a fairly good income.. the new car being $75,000 is a rich mans toy.... also with 500 hp stock they take all of the fun out of modding the car
Nikola pajcin
theedrstrangelove i wonder if the ws6s will appreciate over time.
Wish they would've put a custom. 302
Tj Stewart that wouldve been awesome
classic chevy formula: wait for Ford to make an awesome car, make something similar, add 2 liters, wait for chevy fans to think its the best thing since sliced bread.
Smucko Smuckovic Yes we know pushrod engines are smaller, the Ford 302 Windsor block is one of the smallest V8 engines (in gross space) that can make 500 hp. Chevy still adds displacement to gain power, where as Ford adds volumetric efficiency.
Sounds to me like the Ford guys are jealous. The new Z28 is a beautiful car.
Hey dumbass, has Ford ever figured out how to make a car than can do something better than go in a straight line? Oh, that's what I thought...
P.S. The Z28 smoked your Mustang Boss 302 since the GT500 can't handle worth a damn.
The MK 1, 2, and 3 were designed in England, with the MK 4 designed in America. All of the cars were powered by American made engines though.
And Chevrolet is a French name, whats your point...
Jay Leno knows what he's talking about and he's a old time car man thanks
You are very welcome!
The Z28 ought to come standard with a set of bright driving lights! You need to see to go fast. I hate automatic transmissions with a passion!!! I totally agree with Jay Leno that full manuals are so fun. If Jay Leno were to be the CEO of GM I would be so so happy!
$80k No Way, A/C is listed as an option?
it's a track monster dude.
no other car can top it for 75K.
It must be manual, that car is not for ladies.
It’s only as of the 21st century, that both women and men, took a whole different approach to driving, transportation, and mechanicals, etc. in general…
75k car and still using halogen headlights. wtf
no kidding, I noticed that myself .. that's nuts.
It's cool to see him driving through my neighborhood!
23mpg downhill with a tail wind and a sail. Realistically with a real man driving, 10mpg if you're lucky.
And Id love every minute of it
I could care less about mpg with fun cars.
Lots of power 3 pedals decent gearing Im in.
GT350R > Z28
+daisbest It should be considering its an all new car built specifically for the purpose. It wont suprise me if the 2016 camaro ss 1le keeps up with or beats the normal gt350 so just wait to see what the new z28 does.
+daisbest no lol
daisbest and now the new zl1 outperforms the gt350 :D
And the GT500 will outperform the ZL1. The beat goes on....
What part of TRACK CAR didn't you understand?
A GT-500 has inferior brakes and cant take a turn worth a shit.
Yup.. he hasn't watched the head to head videos on the zl1 vs gt500 the mustang gets beat all day long on the track with more hp..
And now with the z28 it be a bigger whoop azz
Jack Metcalf right!! have you seen the new 2015 Zo6...its rockin a new 6.2L LT4 V8 pushin 625hp & 635ft. lbs. of torque..woooo and is sexy as shit
Wtf is a Ri-care-o? Lol
Im so glad someone was thinking what i was thinking.
Stop talking about the seat Jay, your driving me crazy saying it that way!
yeah, and he says Yanko and not Yenko
Steven Pruitt different dialects
I wonder if the LS7 that went into the Z28 had fixed the valve guide problem that plagued the LS7 in the C6 Corvette Z06
Wow love the new z28. Everyone knows jay is a much bigger ford guy than gm guy, but i love how he has the camaro engineer to talk about it, and he can enjoy it like a real car guy would. Be interesting to see how it can take on the big bad shelby
Next fall ill be going after a ZL1, Z06, CTS-V coupe, TT RS, Evo X GSR (shitty weather) , and will be looking at a z28, sticking to these pre-reviews until it actually goes to the market
so they took out the AC and radio. OPE, weight savings goal reached! I'm so very impressed!
So glad the Z\28 is back! I had an 86 Z\28 350 auto, t-top in white over black so this one really got me going!!!
amazing isn't it and its one those cars that i would love to drive all day long
This may be my favorite of the "new" Camaros, although the 2020/21 SS 1LEs are tempting...
Jay cannot stop moving lol. Try to catch one time where he stands still for more than 5 seconds haha. The people he talks to always have to move back and forth because Jay just cannot stand in one place hahaha I love it!
Why did it take me this long to find this video?? I LOVE CAMAROS
I wish that color would be available. It looks gorgeous.
Can oil turn into fuel. Injectors create thrust. Filters used to push pistons
