  • Andrew from HTE talks about Home Theatres as they are shown in builders plans and the problems associated with them if you want to create, design build and enjoy a great cinema or theatre at home.
    Just stamping the word home theatre on a room does not make it so.

    Thank you for the video! What I would LOVE to see is how you would turn an open plan living kitchen dining into a combined entertaining / cinema! As I won't have a separate cinema room. A video exactly the same but with a typical 3 bedroom 1 garage house. :)

      Hi. Thanks for your comment. Where we live, these are “typical” house plans. They very often just slap “Theatre Room” on any spare room in the plan so the point of the video was that these are not in reality theatre rooms. The considerations for trying to make these into actual cinema rooms apply to any room in the house whether it is dedicated or not. We apply exactly the same rules to a multi use living space. Nothing changes. However also for us we only build dedicated cinemas as we are high end cinema specialists. It is almost impossible to get the same picture and sound quality in say an open plan or combined living space. Simply not being able to paint the whole room black destroys image quality and amplifies the exit door effect, layout sometimes means acoustics is challenged as are speaker locations. This means we cannot produce a room to our standards. So asking us to do this is a bit like asking McLaren to build a campervan. :-) Having said that we have still consulted with clients and provided room designs for them in am effort to get the best of both worlds but we do warn them of the compromises. With regard to producing a video on this, we are extremely stretched for time and something like that is a bit off track for us..But, we try to help where we can and we have noted your request and will see what we can do. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.

    Totally understand your pain Andrew. The amount of times a client comes to me with a "Home Theatre" that is just either impossible to do, impractical to do or you can work something but there are so many compromises...and ultimately the customer loses out. Even talking to clients and the battles they go through with the architect or builder...there is a lack of respect for what we do out there and how we can help.
    Surprisingly some builders/architects do engage "Home Theatre Specialists" around at planning design and they still end up with such similar offers...I think in part this is why so many do not engage our industry at times either...
    ...and then there are forums...the best way to get so much incorrect info and just get more confused.
    All I know, when I need a plumber, electrician, doctor...I go to someone who is qualified...and you pay for the service.
    Those on our industry who don't charge for design, well it just tells you what kind of level of outcome you are going to get as well.
    So hear you and agree with you loud and clear...

    I was so glad my home builder was able to to custom my only living room space with true Focal Dolby Atmos. Since my house is a very open concept the home builder was able to accommodate the best of both worlds for my living room and movie night is really immersive visually and sound wise. We have the LG hu810p laser projector with a 110 inch custom screen that hangs in front of the 65 inch Oled and at night the screen goes out and projector gets going. Even though it's open concept the Focal atoms system is light years ahead of my old Polk system. My equipment is hidden in the kitchen only 8ft from the projector to give the video a short run and a powerful enough amp to drive the speakers. Overall other than it's in a living room watching movies you can't tell.

    Hello, I have a question. I have a space 20'x10'8"x6'8", I have a rather low drop ceiling and was wondering if there was any considerations or treatments I can do or should do to drop ceilings.

    Enjoying your videos very much; very informative. I’m doing an extension to my home and incorporating a double garage and purpose built theatre room. Have just found out that building code requires inhabitable spaces must have windows for air circulation and natural light. This of course sucks if you want a real theatre experience. I could build a huge store room and convert after permit. Please any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hey man! Just saw your video on Barco Balder & I'm pretty impressed. Though I can't see much demo videos on web but I'm sure it must be an amazing projector. I will be building my dream home theatre early next year and I was considering JVC NX7 with panamorph DCR lens but after I saw that video, I'm really considering getting Barco Balder projector. I absolutely love cinema and I'm willing to do whatever I can to get the BEST & the BEST cinema experience at home. I will be having a dedicated room, 8m x 6.7m, with 200" (or even bigger) screen. I desperately need your advice on should I go for Barco Balder or there are other projectors in that range which I should look on. Please let me know if you need any more info before advising.
    Really looking forward to your reply. Thanks!

    Hi, I am from Adelaide, My HT room got 5.6 M Depth & 4.25 M Width, 3m H ceiling, The entrance door to the HT is 2 X cavity sliders, I also got a big window behind the seating position, I am planning to install in-ceiling speakers for all rear surround system ( 4 speakers, Krix Atmospheric Angled ones ) because of cavity sliders and rear glass window not let me install inwall speakers. My question is , Can I expect a good quality surround with in-ceiling rear surround speakers? I will go for floor standing speaking for front L & C and a center speaker, also have a plan to put atmos speakers

    Fellow Aussie here. So if building a house with Home theatre room, what's the minimum comfortable sqr meter house do i need to buy? Any guidelines on this?

    • @HomeTheatreEngineering
      @HomeTheatreEngineering  4 роки тому

      Its not about the square meters or space. Its about useability. Windows, entrances, orientation. Surprisingly good theatres can be built in small spaces if you are not fighting the initial build. Having said that it also depends on how many people will use the room etc etc..just dont assume that because a room says home theatre on the plan, that it is. Get some advice.

    Do you think it could be more worthwhile to simply set up a stereo setup properly rather than the entire set of surround speakers?

    • @HomeTheatreEngineering
      @HomeTheatreEngineering  4 роки тому +1

      If you are asking should I do stereo over surround sound thats not an easy answer. Audio has evolved Tidal is presenting music mastered in Atmos. So the short answer is.. if you can the absolutely put together a proper surround system. But this is rarely done. So if you cant do a well configured surround system then sure do stereo. But given the choice I would go properly designed multi channel every time but.....a proper surround sound system well implemented, at least in my opinion should so stereo as well as any dedicated stereo only system. But stereo cannot do multi channel. !!

    A 12 wide by 12 long what size is it and is that a good size for home theater

    • @HomeTheatreEngineering
      @HomeTheatreEngineering  4 роки тому +1

      Its not so much the size of the room but the design. Where are the windows where are the entrances etc can this work with required speaker placement etc. You can cleverly fit a good solution in most rooms if you can locate your system accurately

    Worse than the architects are the interior designers. Even if an architect understands the concepts of home theater room vs a simple media room, the second the interior designer steps in they're going to paint the room with vibrant colors, hide the speakers with plants or some other structure, fill the room with all sorts of crap that shakes, rattles and vibrates, place EVERYTHING in the worse possible spots, and then get angry at you for not understanding their "Vision"

    Being brutal, and understanding the facts about council laws, is two different things bro! YES, our house was a custom design WITH in fact a home theatre room, but council and construction laws say, that if your room is a certain size, it MUST have a degree of ventilation and light, and YES, I hated the fact my theatre room had to have a large window and a ceiling fan which are both now gone, so cut out your BS, and do some more research first...

    • @HomeTheatreEngineering
      @HomeTheatreEngineering  3 роки тому +1

      I’m sorry but we have built built cinemas with little to no ventilation or light and passed it with council approval one way or another. Some councils have allowed this on various grounds and yes we did our homework. Yes not every council allows this and they are certainly in their minority but we have succeeded. In those that we haven’t we have been able to design in the absolute minimum and then treat that accordingly. So no it wasn’t BS.

    We can call it what ever we want to

    • @AndrewPoole01
      @AndrewPoole01 Рік тому

      Of course you can, you can call a garage a kitchen but it doesn't make it so. But we find so many customers who believe they have a theatre room when in fact to build and actual theatre in that room is at times near impossible especially if you are building a home cinema to a standard for example RP22 (CEDIA) which is soon to be released and then will become an ISO. Telling people a room his a home cinema when it is not is simply incorrect and misleading and only shows the ignorance of builders and architects. Most builders and architects have long handed over the home before the client realises how difficult and costly or compromised the room is if it is indeed to be a proper Home Theatre. I wish you well with the conversion of kitchens to garage and vice versa.

      Sounds like a great home theatre. Not sure what your point is? Our issue is builders just slapping the name home theatre on any arbitrary room. We dont do that with garages, kitchens, alfrescos. They are designed to purpose. At least thats the case here in Australia. Love to hear more about your room. Well done!

      @@isaaccraig3666 no problem at all. Our main issue is we have so many first time home builders who are stepping into home theatre and want to go to your level for example but discover there is no where to properly locate their surrounds or rears for example yet have been "sold" on the idea of a home design that has what appears to be a dedicated "home theatre" this saddens and irritates us and if we can get the home theatre taken as seriously as any other purpose built room then .. yay! Thanks for rewatching and sticking with us :-)
