Kudos to Evie for knowing how to drive a manual. This is a skill that anyone should have respect for considering manuals won’t be around that long especially with electrification on the rise.
No, manual cars will still be around. First reason is, most all countries outside of USA drives stick. They are the most commonly driven cars almost anywhere. Second EVs are super expensive, so people in developing countries or where people can't easily afford them...they are a non factor. So, as long as other countries need them or there is a market, then the America will also have them. There may be far less Americans that drive stick, but plenty enough to keep them around.
Thanks for doing this !!! Best practice for wife acceptance factor is clearly the DSG. The manual is over the top overwhelming, especially with infotainmwnt
Another great Muzio Family review! It sounds like it is a nice car but overpriced and with lots of competition. As for the pathetic infotainment controls and steering wheel switchgear, they would make anyone nauseous, adult or child!
I just don't understand why car designers keep trying to get rid of knobs...that user interface was perfected years and years ago, and doesn't need a redesign.
I feel like she would love this even more on the interstate where she can just cruise in 6th and pass people like mad lol. “Oh no Evies in Drift Mode” LOL
:( that infotainment :( The new rear torque vectoring system looks so good, but the UI and the haptic buttons on the steering wheel make this a difficult car to pull the trigger on (says the guy who has owned three GTIs and loves his current MkVII GTI Sport).
It is an honest review of what many people would think in truth. This is exactly what my wife thinks about my 2018 Golf R. All the things I like, she hates. She thinks it is too bumpy, too “fast feeling”, too much work to drive (I have a manual too), and not comfy enough. Puts it in perspective when enthusiasts say it is a ‘soft’ enthusiast car…all relative. In fact I even agree with her sometimes , and choose our SUV if I just want to relax on a drive. Even in comfort mode, the spring rates make you feel every bump (they are adjustable DAMPERS, not adjustable springs). Still it is the best car I have ever owned all around, and love the fact that it can be “turned on” and become a fun drive at any moment. It makes my 20 mile commute on a windy road, an absolute blast.
I love hearing her criticisms as an average person. Its useful because sometimes all the "reviewers" agree something is bad or great..and when i get in the car im like "what are they talking about!"
That’s great to hear! The whole point of these videos with Evie driving is to get that average person perspective. I agree, there’s value in hearing from a non-reviewer.
2:23-2:34 You’re not having fun because you’re driving at 45mph or below just cruising through an easy windy road haha. An Aventador would feel boring doing the same thing lol
Yeah kudos to Evie for calling bullshit on so called “fun” performance cars, especially in a world where having such “fun” is borderline illegal and dangerous; actual fun can be relaxed enjoyment of driving (even in a car like the Outback Wilderness, as you both reviewed) as well as trips in the car and not requiring pushing any limit - a revelation in car reviews - definitely not crazy! Speed is a simple pleasure but there are certainly more refined forms of pleasure and enjoyment, part of what gives these reviews greater richness and value. There is also the realisation recognised by Evie that a performance car can actually make for a far less enjoyable driving experience if you are not highly engaged with needless intensity in the driving experience!
Anton, thanks for leaving such a thoughtful response. Your perspective is exactly why I love having Evie in our videos. It's really easy for car reviewers to lose touch with how real drivers engage with their vehicles. I appreciate your encouraging words. Cheers!!
I think VW made a judgement error in adopting an all-touch infotainment system. 'Such a great car - but with a driver-unfriendly interface diverting too much attention from the road. Yes, it looks stylish and futuristic, but... Hey, am I the only viewer who thought "drift mode" was likely to trigger another puke-stop? That was such a cute, "real family"-type moment.
Who else thought the back window was going to have vomit on it in drift mode? :-). Glad she was ok. Our daughter anointed our Telluride similarly when it was new. Thank you all weather mats!
Evie single handily and expertly explains why manual transmissions are dying a slow death. Unless you drive a Miata they really aren’t necessary in modern vehicles.
...actually, I think manuals are till necessary in cars. I am much more aware of what the car is doing (speed wise) in a manual vs an automatic. If Evie wasn't having fun in the manual, then it would be much less so in an automatic/DSG.
Evie is not crazy. I’m guessing she would prefer that same drive in a GTI with the DSG and Winter or All-Weather tires, PLUS a lot more color choice to make her “cute” hatch pop if she goes GTI.
Different strokes for different folks! As a former VW fanboy(owned 4 over 20yrs) diesel gate has killed the quality of VW.. gloss black plastic, no gas struts for the hood, hard plastic and capacitive touch and digital screens are all cost saving measures that really drag down the make...I moved on to Audi back in 2018.
...I was all set to replace my then 12 yo Mk4 GTI w/a 6spd TDI Sportwwagen...then boom...diesel-gate thing killed that as VW had to stop selling them until the "fix". After that, my love/want for a VW dropped. I considered a '19 Alltrack, but supply/availability of a 6spd was nill in a 300 mile radius of me (1 in a color combo I did not like)...so, my 2nd VW ownership plans fell through......
Must agree. Way to expensive now when you can get an M2 Beemer for around same price. When i bought the GTI Clubsport seen on my channel, it was a diffrent story. We had a special offer here in Sweden, so it was same price as the standard gti for this 40 year anniversary (with among other spec same turbo as MK7 Golf R)
Did you ever bang your knees against the steering column? I've had volkswagen and i would hit my knees. Also a couple of reviews have mentioned this issue
I've seen this in many reviews that with the Golf R many people just say go with the DSG. I love the manual in my ND Miata and couldn't imagine why anyone would buy an automatic. Perhaps with the Golf R the shifting just doesn't feel connected to the driving experience and feels more like a video game?
What many people unfamiliar with VW's DSG don't grasp is that it isn't a traditional "automatic" transmission. It's an automated clutch paired with a traditional manual transmission. If desired, a DSG transmission can be driven in manual mode and will hold the gear selected all the way to the engine's redline. And if that isn't sufficient, a minor tune to the chip controlling the transmission enables (a) custom programming of the shift points and (b) holding the gear at and beyond the redline. Over several decades I had always had at least one MT vehicle in my garage until I opted for the DSG in a Mk 6 GTI. When I replaced that car with a 7.5 version, I didn't hesitate to go with the DSG again. Granted that it isn't as "engaging" as a 3 pedal MT but it has (a) superior performance and (b) much greater flexibility for daily driving, especially in heavy traffic. And yes, I still enjoy driving an MT vehicle. And that's why when it came to getting a car for my teenaged daughter last year I opted at her request for a VW CC with a manual transmission.
As Stephen Hendricks said the VW DSG is not a typical Automatic. Not even close. Now to answer why someone would buy a DSG over a Manual Golf R, I purchased mine in DSG because the Transmission can handle much more torque than the manual clutch. The Manual is slightly de-tuned versus the DSG because of this. This car like all other VW/AUDI products take very well to tuning. With a flash tune this car could easily pick up 80 to 100 HP and about the same torque. The DSG almost feels like it reads your mind in this car. When slightly lifting off the throttle in a sweeper it does not up shift even if your in the top of the rev range. I have at least ECU and DSG tuned every VW we have owned. My Wife's Arteon is a completely different vehicle with the APR stage one tune. In Europe VW does not even offer this Gen Golf R in Manual. They must know something.
Compare to the Golf GTI Clubsport seen on my channel: same engine and the MK7 Golf R's is 38 turbo. Differance being its DSG 6-speed so faster transmission, its a BSR Stage 1 tune at moment pushing 360 hp / 462 torque. Planning invidia downpipe swap, DSG Stage 2+ tune by TVS Engineering (best) & maby a Revo Stage 2 ECU tune later. Check & follow the build on my channel! 👍

Important to mention is not only are the new GTI and R horrendous, but at night things like the volume slider don't even illuminate. Just so much cost cutting inside on the interior and bad tech that I could never recommend to anyone. A nightmare to use.
Seems like all reviewers got together and decided to hate the info system and the button less design. I am.an actual owner and i have lived with it for a few weeks now and I totally love it. Not saying is perfect but it is so so so far better than what many reviewers are saying. Mk8.5 brought the buttons back and honestly... looks like a step backwards in tech

The only downside to the STi is the 'race me" wing on the back. I know you can spec 1 w/o the wing, but why. Of course even in my WRX, ppl always think I want to "race" when I'm cruising on the highway. The Golf-R would be much more stealth in the this area. Oh, the STi rides a bit rougher and doesn't respond/take to mods as well/easily as the Golf-R
Evie is right not to like the MK8. The negatives far out weighs the positives. It's a real shame. I'm a big fan of the Golf, this is first time I've really hated a Golf.
Good to know it’s family friendly. Informative but glad I’m not leaving it up to Evie 🤦♂️ besides the family friendly aspect this car should be a big hit. Only drive it if you know what you’re driving and how to drive it.
AWWW POOR THING!!! All the bumps and high altitude bothered her tummy ?? She’s such a cute little girl ! All the spinning around especially when Dad was driving . I might get close to puking too !!!! I love you guys though 😘😘
The entire video was spot on... The only thing I was unimpressed about was; You.. Micah, were drinking water not from a plastic bottle but, from an aluminum can.. Yuck.. lol

Evie needs to be in every review…she is so likable
What about wireless CarPlay?
I thoroughly enjoyed this Family review! Nice t-shirt Micah!
Thank you, Steve!
I thought Micah was drinking a Tab there for a second. :D
I wouldn’t turn away a Tab. 😁
Excellent video! I’d love to see Evie drift it too 😸
Evie was the best part of this review
VW’s never change. Fun to drive, but not to own.
Loving the new golf r

VW better have inspected those seats before they hand it off to the next people…🤣🤣
This made me laugh. Cheers!

The car reviews are great. So, is it wrong to enjoy the drives around Big Bear even more than the cars themselves? 😉
Are these two married?
Yes

I definitely want a awd r, I currently have a Jetta s
Manual is never…more efficient!! ;)
She looks like a great kisser.
The entire video was spot on... The only thing I was unimpressed about was; You.. Micah, were drinking water not from a plastic bottle but, from an aluminum can.. Yuck.. lol
Plastics are made of petroleum.
@@afcgeo882 Nothing to do with the composition, and more to do with how things (In/from a can) taste.
@@Kiss__Kiss Leetching plastic doesn’t make water taste good, while aluminum has ZERO effect on water because of its pH levels.
@@afcgeo882 No, I am talking about the metallic taste. Plastic does not give you this.
@@Kiss__Kiss So am I. Do you not read?
When are you going to do a meet and greet up in Big Bear? It'll be fun to see you do 2 minute reviews on people's personal cars.
OMG am I first?!
Yup!🥇

Yeah, VW made the mk8 feel and look cheap. I will wait for them to make it better.
