Yasunori Mitsuda was the composer for both. He also really loves his Celtic influences. Also, during the main theme, you can actually hear a bit of the Termina Theme.
Actually it would be more appropriate to say in Termina you hear a bit of the Lahan theme, since this game came out before Chrono Cross. Unlike Chrono Cross, the story in this game is way easier to follow, even if you DON'T have access to supplemental material.
11:40 Yes, this was composed by Mitsuda, the composer of Chrono Trigger (according to Wikipedia). No wonder why I like the music so much when we are only like 5 minutes into the game...
Yasunori Mitsuda did the soundtrack for this game. In an interview he mentioned getting so stressed at times during this game's production that his health actually started to decline.
I already buy my popcorn in bulk. Sadly, this has resulted in me replacing popcorn makers more often than I restock on popcorn. Speaking of, I am getting within two to three months of actually needing to do so. I am on my third replacement popper since buying that bag.
7:16. More like Final Fantasy Gundam. Tetsuya Takahashi had Gundam figures all over his desk. Upon seeing them, Hironobu Sakaguchi realized that Takahashi wanted to make his own game, so he asked the higher ups at Square to give him a team.
Final Fantasy Evangelion would be more accurate with all the biblical references (trust me, you haven't even seen the tip of the iceberg yet when it comes to biblical references).
I am a HUGE fan of yours and I have been dying for you to play this game. I will follow this playthrough religiously. Thank you so much. Depression has been kicking my ass I could not have asked you to do this at a better time.
Possibly one of the most complicated stories in video game history. I watched an LP of this game a few years ago and while it wasn't particularly good, the guy took the time to recap and explain what happened and that was the first time I really understood what the game was about.
That intro had some really impressive animation. Really smooth for an anime style. Uh oh, the best friend is talking about his upcoming marriage and how they'll always be friends. That's just a huge jRPG red flag there. I've only heard about this game but I've never seen or played it. I look forward to watching this LP!
Oh man oh man I'm so excited. For me this will be the spiritual sequel to Team Four Stars' Xenogears LP. Xenogears is a game I've purchased and finished on my own barely some months ago, and it left me... in a odd state. I loved some things and didn't know what to think of others. So I can't wait to re-visit this journey alongside HCBailly (who could perhaps show me what I missed the first time)
Thank you for playing this game HCBailly. I feel like you're finally hitting some of the games I've always wanted to see you play. I'll keep hoping for Breath of Fire 3 in the future. Much love from the West Coast!
Xenogears one of those games that have so many dark references that you may not understand until later or you played the game before. The story is so compelling and deep I really wish they would do a remake of this game
Unfortunately, there's no possible way a remake could ever happen because multiple companies hold the rights to different things in this game. Which is the exact same case with Xenosaga. The best we can hope for is another Xeno game that's similar to this or Xenosaga.
The only bad part of this game is how Disc 2 was handled, and that wasn't the production team's fault. That was Square rushing the game out so they could pull the staff from this to make the godawful Final Fantasy VIII.
SBaby in the end. The "disc 2 fiasco" made the game a work of art on its own. Very few game can distinguish themselves this way. Xenogears is 20 years old now, and its unusual developpement by Squaresoft still remain a way to look at the game industry in the late 90's. Who knows, maybe XG would have that much impact on those who played it if it wasnt for that second disc.
That's a good point too. If they WERE ever able to remake the game and they did put in all the stuff that was cut, I don't think it would end up being as good as the product we got. There's something about the narrative as it is, that just makes it memorable for people that have played through it.
@@SBaby Honestly, I'd love to see this game remade with it being properly finished. So I can't say I'd necessarily agree on that. But that'd probably never, ever happen, anyway, cause that'd be a massive web of rights issues that no one would want to untangle (I assume, anyway, since the production team have long since left Square, founded their own studio, and are now a second-party developer working for Nintendo. At least in the end we got Waifublade Chronicles :P). (And yes I know full well how late this is)
The way Deathblows are exacuted really reminds me of Legend of Legaia's combat with the inputs. I wonder if HCBailly would be interested in checking out that game and even the "sequal" Legaia 2: Duel Saga. I grew up with Legaia 2 and I have good memories of playing the game, although I've never beaten it. Anyway, looking forward to this Let's Play of a rather...interesting RPG.
8:27 - Lahan is a neutral village outside of Aveh territory. Though WHY it says near the border with Kislev is a mystery, since Kislev is on the opposite side of a mountain range. But whatever. Point is, it's a neutral town.
The music in this game was fantastic. This LP is bringing back some memories. I needed a plot guide to understand everything and it still doesn't really add up for me. I don't care, though. I appreciate the attempt to be deep and emotional. Some of the themes were totally new to me at the time. Going to look forward to the next 2 years (!) of HC playing this!
10:41 He would literally do 1 damage to something that big. MAYBE 2. It's kinda like being slapped with Mini in FF4 and such, and you do barely a cat scratch. 11:39 it is indeed Mitsuda. Alas he only sticks around until the first Xenosaga. He did stick a toe in for the first Xenoblade and then a foot for Xenoblade 2. XD 19:36 so, just like in Chrono Trigger~ 35:22 wow I think you're the first person i've watched who LP'd this game who actually goes into detail about how many possible animations per move type. \o/
23:40 - There are some rare instances where you might want to equip accessories instead of armor, because some effects from accessories carry over to Gears, whereas armor and equipment that only raises stats never carry over. In fact, there is a certain optional boss that can only be beaten with a very specific arrangement.
4:31 - They did. The regular anime cutscenes were done by Production IG, and the intro and FMV cutscenes were done by a different studio. Given what happens later though, it isn't a problem for the story if the animation styles are different.
Oh my gosh xD I've never heard of this game but all I could think of was "this feels like Gundam" and then as it goes on it really does feel like it. I love it. Cant wait to dig into this!!
Nice Xenogears episode HCBailly. You're right about the graphics of old JRPGs being top of the line when said game came out. Of course as time passes and graphics get better the older title look ancient, but they're nonetheless enjoyable.
So, we're starting the Xeno series of games... That means you'll be playing them in order of release, right? There's this game, then Xenosaga, and then Xenoblade Chronicles. Can't wait to see those eventually on the channel. It will be awesome. XD

Fan of your channel for years got me through some tough times def top 5 for me . I enjoyed ff10 and ff7 for sure and probably watched others. Thank you floral designer hcbailey. ✊✊
The first Xenogame. I love this game with all my heart.
Yasunori Mitsuda was the composer for both. He also really loves his Celtic influences. Also, during the main theme, you can actually hear a bit of the Termina Theme.

I have played this game more than most others, and even made an LP of it myself, but I'm totally here for this. :D
I have been hoping for this lets play for years. thank you HCBailly
HELLLL YEAAAAA I'VE BEEN WAITING YEARS FOR THIS
For those that haven’t played the game, prepare for having your mind blown. There’s no story like it, before or since.
Xenosaga comes close.
Just became the slumbs champion and Elly tried to hold the missile.... I'm very impressed with this game so far
As someone who loves the xenoblade games I want to play gears and saga but I live it the UK
Oh man this game was so good
Wait you watch HC? Well then!
Oh my god finally I've been waiting for this for literal years
Ah, as we begin Xenogears. I see Henri has preemptively put three digits in his episode counter!
Better buy your popcorn in bulk!
There is no way this can be less then 100 parts. 2-300 maybe depending on how things go
I think my average time when I play this is right aroud 77 hours, so at 20 to 30 minute episodes i would assume at least 100 parts lol
I already buy my popcorn in bulk. Sadly, this has resulted in me replacing popcorn makers more often than I restock on popcorn. Speaking of, I am getting within two to three months of actually needing to do so. I am on my third replacement popper since buying that bag.
Shouldn't need a popper, just use a metal bowl and some aluminium foil, and you can pop popcorn the Alton Brown way!
That beautiful Yasunori Mitsuda music.
Feelin' DanDy
I love this games OST. I wish my cd I got from a friend didn't die on me...oh well, I have the game on my ps3 & UA-cam...lol
It's time for this game! I will play as you proceed, but, I will be grinding!! Let's go for it!!
Matt Wheaton evangelio is great youre just an idiot
Matt Wheaton TLDR. Dont talk to me
Matt Wheaton dont talk to me
SBaby - Evangelion? Nah. More like Gnosticism, Childhood's End and 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Oh man... XenoGears. The origin of the Xenoblade chronicles series. I loved playing this game with my friend.
You made my YEAR bro. I LOVE THIS GAME!
This game and it’s story blew my mind as a kid
I am a HUGE fan of yours and I have been dying for you to play this game. I will follow this playthrough religiously. Thank you so much. Depression has been kicking my ass I could not have asked you to do this at a better time.
4:08 - See those laser cannons? Remember them, because THEY'LL be important too.
Never realized the best rpg let’s player did a let’s play of xenogears. I’m game!
Possibly one of the most complicated stories in video game history. I watched an LP of this game a few years ago and while it wasn't particularly good, the guy took the time to recap and explain what happened and that was the first time I really understood what the game was about.
Wow... 17 seconds in, and i'm already lost and confused...
Can't wait to see how this game plays out!
Who ever built that ship was compensating more than any other man ever.
The ship is shaped like a cross.
Yeah i ve been waiting this since the announcement like maaaaaaaaaaaaaad :)
OMG! I have been waiting for this for years!! Thank you!
I wish this was remade for the PS4, just like Secret of Mana was.
it took me six months to beat Xenogears the first time reading was most of the six months.
Ooooh this LP is gonna give me LOTS to watch. Thanks for playing this amazing game, HCBailly!
Oh fucking YESSSS! Here's come the MASTERPIECE!
I'll been waiting since forever for this! Hyped over 9000!
Good Job, Mister Bailly.
I feel like we're going to be eating a lot of popcorn for the next few months.
So in like 9 months when this baby finally comes to term, you should totally consider Wild Arms as your next main LP :P
Oh man oh man I'm so excited.
For me this will be the spiritual sequel to Team Four Stars' Xenogears LP.
Xenogears is a game I've purchased and finished on my own barely some months ago, and it left me... in a odd state. I loved some things and didn't know what to think of others.

OMG I have been waiting for you to LP this game forever
Will watch in about an hour but I really really hope you can 100 percent thus game or close to it! Thank you again for doing this game!
Maybe there’s no alpha weapon cuz it was never finished
Ba dum tsss
But prototypes are always more powerful than the finished product.
Book lol
Ehrgeiz? I would certain look forward to an April Fool's LP of that one day.
There's actually people out there that legitimately think Ehrgeiz and The Bouncer are really good games. I think they ate glue as kids.
I liked the Bouncer, then again, I only played the demo as a kid one time at Toys R Us.
Couldn't get past the game completely as a kid, so i'm glad for this.
OMG YES! Been waiting for this LP for years
HCBailly playing another game that I've played millions of times (yet somehow always manages to show me things I didn't know)? Outstanding.
Thank you for playing this game HCBailly. I feel like you're finally hitting some of the games I've always wanted to see you play. I'll keep hoping for Breath of Fire 3 in the future. Much love from the West Coast!
I absolutely love this game! Thank you for making this LP
Xenogears one of those games that have so many dark references that you may not understand until later or you played the game before. The story is so compelling and deep I really wish they would do a remake of this game
I would love to see a proper remake, where they added in all the cut content from the second disk.
Unfortunately, there's no possible way a remake could ever happen because multiple companies hold the rights to different things in this game. Which is the exact same case with Xenosaga. The best we can hope for is another Xeno game that's similar to this or Xenosaga.
I've been waiting for this l.p. from you Bailey. This is my favorite ps1 game.
Does this mean one day I'll get to see you LPing Grandia?
Huh?
Finally, I've been waiting so long for you to lets play this!
HAHAHAHAHAHA
Oh god HC that whistle of the Star Trek theme has been your best joke ever.
It will not be the only Star Trek reference we see during this LP.
@@lordBritish1 Gonna have to be specific here. I can't read my comment once you reply to it.
Iv'e been waiting a long time for this to get the HCBailly LP treatment. Super excited to see this being played again.
Never really heard of this game until recently when I learned more about the Xeno series and this looks pretty promising. Should be a fun ride.
Ahhh Xenogears! So many right and wrong in this game. I really love it.
The only bad part of this game is how Disc 2 was handled, and that wasn't the production team's fault. That was Square rushing the game out so they could pull the staff from this to make the godawful Final Fantasy VIII.

(And yes I know full well how late this is)
For some reason the world map made me remember of Wild Arms 2, since we could also use L1 and R1 there to rotate the camera.
I can already tell just from watching that intro this is definitely going to be one of those mind screw type of games.
8:27 - Lahan is a neutral village outside of Aveh territory. Though WHY it says near the border with Kislev is a mystery, since Kislev is on the opposite side of a mountain range. But whatever. Point is, it's a neutral town.
I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this vid. Glad you're LPing this game.
11:33 - Yasunori Mitsuda composed the music for this game, as well as for Chrono Cross and most of the music in Chrono Trigger.
Wohoo!
Now I have an painful flashback with the freeze glitch on disk 2.
Youre FINALLY playing it!!! Ive wanted this for years!!!
You can also press the circle button after using some ap to cancel the rest of the turn and save up the remaining ap for combos for later
I'm glad you're doing this because I forgot everything about this game.
looks interesting, i got this game a year ago and never played it, but as i see you playing i think i play along
this is sweet. one of my favorite. Glad you're playing!
When HCBailly does an LP, you KNOW you're gonna learn something! Didn't even know about how deathblows were actually learned!
Really looking forward to this one! Love this game so much. Your quest to LP every square soft game must be completed haha!
HCBailley's voice and pronunciation is so clean and crisp that the auto-generated subtitles match up almost 95% of the time
Oh your icon is my favourite character as well, looking forword to seeing you beat this game in ways ive never thought possible
I've been waiting for this since I first discovered HCBailly almost 10 years ago. Very excited!!!!
Don't mess with the Zohar HCbailly!
LMFAO
Don't touch the Zohar. That's right up there with 'Don't put mustard on the cat!', in terms of importance to one's survival.
2:33 - Tom Bosley IS Captain Soonded 'N Gonnabitit.
Oh yea let the fun begin
10:41 He would literally do 1 damage to something that big. MAYBE 2. It's kinda like being slapped with Mini in FF4 and such, and you do barely a cat scratch.
11:39 it is indeed Mitsuda. Alas he only sticks around until the first Xenosaga. He did stick a toe in for the first Xenoblade and then a foot for Xenoblade 2. XD
19:36 so, just like in Chrono Trigger~
35:22 wow I think you're the first person i've watched who LP'd this game who actually goes into detail about how many possible animations per move type. \o/
No idea what's going on in the intro, but it sure is cool.
This JRPG gets to the giant robots REAL quick.
I always heard about this game but never saw anything for it. This is most different and interesting battle system I've seen
man it's amazing how drastically different this game was compared to Xenosaga and Xenoblade outside of the giant mechs
4:24 Remember this picture for later viewers; particularly the woman on the left.
23:40 - There are some rare instances where you might want to equip accessories instead of armor, because some effects from accessories carry over to Gears, whereas armor and equipment that only raises stats never carry over. In fact, there is a certain optional boss that can only be beaten with a very specific arrangement.

Oh my gosh xD I've never heard of this game but all I could think of was "this feels like Gundam" and then as it goes on it really does feel like it. I love it. Cant wait to dig into this!!
I messaged you on UA-cam like 7 years ago asking if you ever planned on playing Xenogears and you said no...oh Happy days have come.
Nice Xenogears episode HCBailly. You're right about the graphics of old JRPGs being top of the line when said game came out. Of course as time passes and graphics get better the older title look ancient, but they're nonetheless enjoyable.
This is hands down my favorite game of all time
So, we're starting the Xeno series of games... That means you'll be playing them in order of release, right?
There's this game, then Xenosaga, and then Xenoblade Chronicles. Can't wait to see those eventually on the channel. It will be awesome. XD
Then Xenoblade Chronicles X and Xenoblade Chronicles 2
This may be what I need to finally getting around to playing this game
Always been interested in the other Xeno games, given the success of the Xenoblade Chronicles games. Looking forward to this!
ive been waiting for you to play this since 2012 ,HOLY SHIT lol XD
Yoooo hc its so awesome you are still doing lets plays. I use to watch your vids alot back in the day and now im doing youtube as well
I might try to play along .. I got used to playing every day with Lost Age, might be nice to try keeping up with this day-by-day.
I know they're not related directly(just as spiritual successors), but I do have Xenoblade Chronicles X, so it will be interesting to see how the first game in the series plays out.
That opening music still gives me goosebumps
Timothy always reminded me of Grash from Project A-Ko: Uncivil Wars.
ive played threw this game tons one of my favorites
Well this is looking good already, I've heard of Xenogears but I haven't seen anything about it. It's pretty interesting with the different animations, the battle mechanics remind me a little of Legends of Legaia. Im looking forward to this.
It's "Air guys" They say it in the game at some point, I believe.
sorry I am late to this, and I do hope you see this HC... I adore you! whenever I have a bad day I can always turn to your videos for a good time :)
3:29 - Ladies and gentlemen. I give you the Xenogears drinking game. Every time there is a Bible quote, or even just a quote from any religious doctrine, take a drink. If it's misquoted (like here where it's supposed to be YE, not YOU), slam it.
Also, 'Ye shall be as gods' flashing across the screen over and over again surely won't have any long term consequences in the game.
I'd prefer to not kill myself, thanks, lol.
Do you want to kill people?
Honestly, I don't think anyone SHOULD do drinking games. It's more a joke about the writing. I can mention it, but whether or not they do it is on them. It's not like I have magical powers to make them do it. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.
13:56 - It's not required to get it now, but it does save you money later if you're planning to do a certain sidequest involving rocks.
Oh god...one of my favorite youtubers is going to play Xenogears....
I don't think I'm ready for this
Well, this is certainly going to be a sprawling something of an LP.
Oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man.......
Once a conflict has lasted that long I'd say it stops being a "war" and starts being your national pastime. Just throwing that out there xD
Fan of your channel for years got me through some tough times def top 5 for me . I enjoyed ff10 and ff7 for sure and probably watched others. Thank you floral designer hcbailey. ✊✊
