He loved Elio he was just to afraid to admit it to his parents and friends so he somehow denies it and married a women instead🥺

I had mixed feelings when I watched the movie, why people see it as so romantic escapes me. Call me a bitter middle aged lady but I have seen this too often. One person taking advantage of another. In this case, a grown man taking advantage of a minor totally smitten with him. Oliver determined everything that happened and when & how it would happen. After rejecting Elio's advances initially he basically ordered him into his room at midnight for sex. That was after he realised Elio's well meaning, tolerant parents wouldn't get him into trouble. The grown up decision would have been to not go for it at all, because of course he would go on to break Elio's heart in the end. He must have known that, as a grown man with considerable experience, but he went for it anyway. That in my eyes was a selfish decision. True love has the other person's best interest in mind, not your own (without neglecting your own, obviously). And he never told Elio about this "on and off" girlfriend of his, who maybe didn't even realise she was "off" that summer. She probably never got told about Elio either. I enjoyed the movie, but I have trouble seeing the relationship between the two men as true love. There certainly was a lot of passion but that doesn't necessarily equal love. From my experience I would say Oliver is the kind of man that breaks hearts wherever he goes. That was my feeling when I watched the movie. I personally don't think he was afraid of being gay, my impression was he was bisexual and very sure of his sexuality & comfortable with it. Didn't he say something to the effects of "I know myself" somewhere at the start of the movie? Not every man who chooses a woman over a man is a closeted gay. The relationship with Elio was never meant to be more than an affair for Oliver. That's how I see it. The most mature, loving relationship in the film is that between Elio's parents.

@@maxgarete5435 You wrote: "I personally don't think he was afraid of being gay..." Did you miss the part where he said his own father would have carted him off to "a correctional facility"? That doesn't mean hospital, and it doesn't mean gay conversion camp. It means JAIL. I also don't think Oliver was afraid of "being" gay or bisexual; he was legitimately afraid of being found out. There is a difference. This was 1983 when it was still illegal just to "be" gay or bisexual in many places, when you could lose your job, your housing, your children, kicked out of the military with a Section 8 and dishonorable discharge, etc.
He did not "order" Elio into his room at midnight for sex. He opened the door and extended an invitation to "grow up" after Elio's relentless pursuit and then left it to Elio to follow through or not. His first thought both that night and in the morning was for Elio's well-being. I think you have no idea what it was like to be bisexual or gay two generations ago when social attitudes were vastly different than they are today.

@@charlesdarnay5455 You gave me food for thought here. My own experience ist certainly not comparable. I'll rewatch the movie and think about it. If I was speaking from a place of ignorance, I need to correct my view.

@@maxgarete5435 I hope you will come back after watching it a second time and share your reaction. I know director Luca G. cut a few key lines of dialogue in the scene when Oliver and Elio first slept together. Before they went to Oliver's bedroom, he asked Elio, "Are you sure you want to do this?" Elio answered "Yeah, but I'm nervous." Oliver replied "I'm nervous too." Luca G. thought that was too direct and obvious, so he had them do the scene without those lines; the only line that remains is Elio saying "I'm nervous." Had it stayed the way it was written, it shows Oliver in a very different light, concerned for Elio before anything else. And the next morning, Oliver is all about regretting what they did and worried about how Elio was handling it... that remains in the movie. If you re-watch the movie and can see a mutual but awkward attraction, neither of them knowing how to express it until their time together is about to run out, it will seem a different movie.
