Im convinced this guy knows his stuff. He might not look great in a swing but I suspect this is because he is out of shape. What he is saying is good and he is giving us more than most. No golf 'pro' gives away everything. This guys gives us more than most. I would truly love to talk about why a baseball player finishes back and what the true reason a golf swing doesnt. Shame he says he 'hasnt got time'. More likely that he does not want to give that info for free. I can understand that. I respect the amount he has given us here as it is.
This is such a simple concept of weight transfer yet I guess I've overlooked it since I've always assumed that that's the natural bit and I'm doing it! Just tried it yesterday and I'm putting 15-20 yards on my mid irons and 25+ yards on my driver. Turning my feet out is another revelation helping to aid rotation and retain balance. Still alot of work to do to but I'm heading in the right direction. Thanks so much!
@ 5.09 When he demonstrates the incorrect hip turn I admit I have turned like that in the past and see it in 70% of golfers. Absolute gold instruction.
Oh I know 100% what you are speaking of...How they teach the weight shift in golf as a past athlete make no since to me. As an ex linebacker and running back because the make up of the human body is 3D, no one seems to understand you can work off center.. my point is if there is a hole open between the guard and tackle on the left, there is no need for me to shift to the right so I can run left. I can move from center to my left and the right will follow..The purpose of the backswing is to create torque not turn Like Mr Penick said " the turn is the golf swing is a simple motion made to be complex by people own personal theories and idiosyncrasy"... If you are throwing hay bails in the barn, ok let your opposite hip move in the direction you are throwing when you are swinging to back to create some momentum and not keep your weight centered, Oh believe me your back is going to feel it..Thank You, THE SHADE TREE PRO...
I've read some of the comments below and it is obvious that some do not understand what Darrell is saying. When a person has opened his hips enough to clear his arms he has hit the golf ball and then he starts to straighten up, not before.
If you watch the video a couple of times you will realize what Darrell is demonstrating is true, it takes a lot of practice to get your body to carry out the correct weight shift. I have always thought you had to really go after the ball when trying to hit it a long way, I have been working on what Darrell has been teaching and find it works great.
This is so good because, to me - nice guys though they are - young golf pros at your average club always seem to want to teach you to swing like Rory Mcilroy. They have (or, at least, the ones I've visited) a one-size fits all teaching approach. But when you're nearing 50 and have had a lot of sporting injuries over the years - and, yes, might be carrying the odd extra pound here and there - it's just not what you need. They talk about pressure through your laces and compression into the swing and all that stuff. But Mr Klassen talks about balance and adjusting your feet where you want them and, above all, transferring your weight comfortably. It's right in every sense - if you can do something well in any sport, and do it comfortably, then you will be able to do it forever. If it puts pressure and strain on you, no matter what age you are, you are going to have problems - (like, in my case, a stress fracture of the lower back when I was a 19 year-old professional cricketer). It is actually a real relief to hear something so sensible from a pro. I wish I could afford a lesson with him ;)
Would like to know your thoughts on left heel off the ground,it helps me with weight shift ie Nicklaus, wateon Tom and bubba,Bobby Jones, palmer, player etc etc the new resistance swing is dangerous on lower back etc Thanks
You don't rotate upwards like that because you will either top or miss the ball. Your shoulders should rotate on the same angled plane and 90deg to your spine as the hips turn to get out of the way, then after you have struck the ball you can then straighten up but NOT before like he shows.
+Robert Bernard You are wrong and he is right. Look at slow motion of Mcilroy. Hips rise to finish though swing. The reason a golfer does not top the ball is due to the 'Double pendulum action'. The golf swing is not a lateral action. Its has a vertical drop then a horizontal swing. It may take you years to figure this out but there are two massive clues I have just handed you. Good luck.
Well said, makes a whole lot of sense, now i,ve come to realise there,s a lot of rubbish taught by so called top instructors, maybe that explains why H/cap golfers are not improving.S/J.
Gmonkey808: It is you my friend who is wrong. If you watch Justin Rose, Louise Oosterhousen and other great golfers who make pure contact with the ball every time, they never move their head down and then back up during the swing (like Tiger does and blocks it right every time). They stay on the same height plane on the back swing and the downswing and hit it miles and straight with none of this 'double pendulum' action you talk about. Golfers who do that action think they will get more distance because they are getting more body action into it but it can throw the swing out unless your timing is perfect. No my friend that action you describe is totally incorrect. The golf swing is a rotational action with a slight shift to the left on the downswing to help transfer your weight. Your shoulders rotate 90deg to the slightly tilted spine and rotate back and through. After you have hit the ball you can stand up as much as you want but not before. I speak from experience and I play off 3 handicap. It might take you years to figure it out but there are not clues but explanations to tell you how to master the action and you too might get it in time. Good luck also.
Sitting on your back foot was the best explanation I've heard....great common sense and the use of natural rotation

Great tip about turning the left foot out.I can now really end up facing the target at the follow through.
It works great! No surprise to those that already know this. Thank you.
5:26. There’s a shot putter winding up his power right there!

Thats similar to how a boxer delivers full power punch.
