- Lets' visit some historic old haunts with the ghost of Mark Twain! Many history-minded people know that Missouri native Samuel L. Clemens was in Northern Nevada, but lets explore the backstory of why he came and what he saw and experienced here. We'll also uncover the mysteries of Nevada's Mark Twain cabins. There's also one in the gold country of California, but we had/have two! We'll end our visit to Carson City with a visit to Shoetree Brewing - purveyors of fine craft beer.
It's The Reno You Know! My name is Steve and I've lived in Reno, Nevada for 37 years (as an adult!). I've had a lifelong interest in historical topics, and spend much time exploring and researching this wonderful area of Northern Nevada. I started this channel to share some of what I've learned. I produced a full-length documentary film on the history of Harolds Club casino in 2015.
Perhaps you're thinking of moving to Reno and are looking for background on the area or reasons to move, or you're already a resident and this content might help give you a sense of place. I shall endeavor to cater to both groups!
I'm also a craft beer enthusiast, and thought I'd talk about some of that brewery scene here as well. I started homebrewing 31 years ago in 1992, and earned the Certified Cicerone designation in 2015 - this is a sommelier-esque program for beer people.
Please subscribe, share and come along with me on this journey! Thanks and cheers!
Steve
Thank you.
I am reading Mark Twain’s Autobiography to my wife now.
Have a great day, and be careful with that tanglefoot. Glen M, aka the Reno Kid
From his works I've read, its easy to see why he was America's great humorist!
You didn’t mention the Odeon Saloon in Dayton!! Mark Twain and Adolph Sutro were good friends and played pool there together often!!
I have plans to get there!
Very enjoyable episode. There’s a cove between Incline and Sand Harbor that was proposed to be named after Mark Twain, but the Washoes’ objected citing Twain’s insulting description of the tribe. I guess that was somewhere around 15 years ago
Favorite Twain quote;
“The more I know people, the more I like dogs”
On the NE shore of Tahoe near his mining camp just a few feet from shore is an 8 ft wide flat top granite boulder that he called his Faro table.
Love it!
Would that be the shoe tree north of Reno near the Stead airport? Somewhere in my old photo files I have photos.
There are a few Shoe Trees in the area! I think I used a photo of the one up by Susanville, CA - I'll have to re-watch and see!
There's a rock in Unionville that he carved his name and date.
Would love to see that!!
Hey I can remember that shoe tree on 395! When I was a kid we drove by it a million times for our monthly costco trip.
Informative video as always, thank you!
Mark twain also had a beer in the old saloon up in Virginia city. The one with the lady that has silver Dollars I for her dress.
The Silver Queen. Gone for a long time now.
