  • This educational video over the topic " Prime Coat application over granular base" will help the students of civil engineering stream as well as field pavement Engineers with an elaborate explanation on Bituminous Prime Coat . The explanation include the importance of bituminous priming application, types of material used for application of prime coat, procedure for application of prime coat, Quality control in priming application and defects in priming application over granular surface. Hope most of important facts on prime coat are discussed in my video. Viewers are encouraged to leave some comments on the topic, their doubts on some of my points explanation and above all their valuable suggestions on this topic.

Yes, thanks. have you gone through my presentation. Any doubt you have on Prime Coat application. my next video will be over Tack Coat application . Engineers generally confuse with prime coat and tack coat in pavement constructuin.

Yes i will.my next video will be on tack coat application.it is under progress.i started the prime coat as most of us do not know in detail about tack and prime coat.i will make the series to complete the flexible pavement.thanks for your remark

Ok help me, on how to calculate the quantity of prime coat

      Hi Chinedu welcome to you.
Happy that you are interested to know how to calculate the quantity of prime coat.
      1) first we should see the relevant code that recommend the prime coat application,i.e it is IRC-16,2008.it recommend about .7 to 1 kg per sqm of area with cationic Bitumen Emulsion SS-1 grade with curing period less than 48 hour and conforming to IS- 8887,2004.Here the cutback bitumen are not advisable for environmental problem.
      2) the base course should be either WMM or Water Bound Makadam type with less porous material.
3)the SS-1 cationic material should not be further diluted while applied and see it should be apply so that the minimum thickness of 10 mm have been achieved to the entire area. To ensure A tray test should made as per IRC- 16,you can download and follow the details of experiment.
4)last the quantity you require.lets take your project length and width coverage. If you are doing 1 km length of a road with average width 3.5m (depending upon your road width specifications) total area for example comes to 1000m x 3.5m =3500 sqm
If you need .7 kg per sqm of ss-1 grade undiluted prime coat then total quantity comes to .7x3500=2450 kg for that area of 1000 m by 3.5m
      Thats the calculation.........
      Any difficulty further ask questions
      Thank you
      Arun Paul

@@civilengineering3438 thank you sir for your detailed explanation. Here in Nigeria we used priming material as Mc1 is it the same as ss-1 grade bitumen

    • @civilengineering3438
      @civilengineering3438  3 роки тому +1

SS-1 is a slow setting type of Bitumen Emulsion.it is a mixture of bitumen globule, water and dispersing agent.when water evaporate from the applied surface then the prime coat bitumen set.Similarly MC grade is a medium curing Cut Back bitumen.it is a liquid bitumen consists of bitumen globule in solvent like naptha, gasoline,kirosene.....these are volatile solvent. In india during cold I mean may be in northern India engineer may use MC-30 grade ,medium curing cutback bitumen.MC-1 might be equivalent to MC-30 grade cutback bitumen.the difference between emulsion and cutback bitumen is that 1st one is water based and 2nd one is solvent based.MC-1 prime coat may be a cutback bitumen with solvent like kerosene.but there is a health hazard due to evaporation of the solvent.i do not understand why in Nigeria in a hot country engineer are recommending MC type of bitumen.curing and setting period differ in each case of cutback and emulsion.cutback many take a time like 1 to 2 hour.Cutback bitumen prime coat are generally applied for patch repair as it can set quick for real bitumen concrete application.
      Thank you

@@civilengineering3438 thank you sir for your in-depth explanation. I will confess that I have learned from your knowledge. Here in Nigeria is the priming material will used for base course
