This music transports me back to the 60's as much as the great rock albums of the era!

All good stuff!! I've got a fairly obscure 2-record compilation set issued in 1979 entitled "Black Magic 40 Original Soul Tracks," from Pickwick Records, that has some great tunes, spanning the 1960s to early 1970s.

Even before I watched this I knew you were picking Star time as your #1, truly phenomenal set. I have all the others in some form, huge soul music fan. Another splendid video Tom.

    A good list .
Two albums that I would add are :
The Four Tops Live ! ( at the Rooster Tail in Detroit ) . It’s killer .
And Wilson Pickett. The Exciting Wilson Pickett .
    Cheers !

Beg, Scream and Shout the Rhino Box set in very very cool packaging is essential as is The Complete Stax Volt singles that you showcased. JB’s Star Time might be the best box ever and a huge influence on Hip Hop. Oh and the Ray Charles Box The Birth of Soul. Great stuff, thanks.

I need to find Star Time. I managed to see Booker T & the MGs. NRBQ opened. Slim's in SF 1994. Great show. Todd Rundgren was in attendance

Overall, a very good list. My only real beef with it is that I would have chosen a different compilation for Sam Cooke, because Best Of not only leaves out "A Change Is Gonna Come", but also "Good Times", "Good News", "Nothing Can Change This Love" and "That's Where It's At", all of which I think are better than half the songs on Best Of. I'd go with either Portrait of a Legend or The Man and His Music. I'd want a Wilson Pickett compilation too, but I understand that there's only room for 10, and I don't know how I'd make room for it. For non-compilation albums, my favorites are Otis Redding's Otis Blue and The Immortal Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin's Lady Soul and I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You.

As for Sam Cooke, I implied that in my comment. After having read the list on the compilations you mentioned, I think I would still stick to my recommendation of his box set Man Who Invented Soul, and his box set with The Soul Stirrers, Complete Specialty Recordings, and you will have all the trax on the compilations you mentioned, plus a heck of a lot more.

Thats a solid list but i have to question the exclusion of Back To Mono
Which i would put at #1 so to not make the list is shocking to me.

people might get the impression that discs 3 and 4 of "star time" are slim pickings. isn't the live version of "there was a time" on the 3rd disc? if i ever wanted to dance like james, it'd probably be to that performance!

That’s a great live track. Actually discs 3 & 4 I listen to the most. Just solid tracks from start to finish. That late 60’s/early 70’s period is my favorite era of James Brown. There Was A Time (live) is on Disc 2.

@@tomrobinson5776 i placed a hold on "star time" from a far off library today. you said it was your most played box set so i wasn't doubting you. i guess you were suggesting the early stuff to people new to JB. 3 and 4 are my favorites too. i'll be seeing the judee sill doc tommorrow!

A lot of these artists had MUCH better compilations in later years. With Sam Cooke, you would have been much better to have recommended his box set Man Who Invented Soul, which is far more explorative altogether. What about the box set with his complete fifties recordings with The Soul Stirrers, before he went solo. I know this wasn't the sixties. There is also another box set The Complete Keen Recordings, collecting all his first solo recordings for that label, before he moved to RCA.
With far too many of these artists, I prefer to have CD reissues of their albums with bonus tracks, and therefore getting a complete collection of all their tracks, rather than just scant Best Of's.
As for Otis Redding, you would have been better to mention his 3CD set, The Definitive Otis Redding, which was an expanded version of Anthology, but with rare tracks added, such as B sides, more pre-Stax tracks for various small labels, plus a coca cola commercial. If you want to listen to his Monterey performances, they are on a box blu-ray set with the complete performances by all artists at the festival, and you can watch him performing them live.

I have the multidisc dvd of Monterey Pop which has the complete set of Otis, and the 4 CD box of Monterey Pop issued by Rhino in the 90’s.
