Each league has its positives and negatives, but the Euroleague crowd is unmatched. Its like college sports in the US or the NBA finals for a top team. I went to an EL game as just a spectator and got sucked in to the cheering. Didnt know a single player on the court at the time.
True, that's because in Europe people come to actually watch games. NBA games are full of casual fans and families that just came to see themselves on jumbotron and to eat pizza and ice cream. It amazes me how many of people there are on their phones during the game.
European fan experience is something unmatched. I've been to the Eternal derby myself and oh boy, I still remember the tension, the chants, the noise so vividly 😊
I strongly disagree. Euroleague has money enough since a few years. Good players choose to come to, or stay in the Euroleague instead of rushing to the NBA. The Euroleague is actually in danger of getting too commercial. Euroleague should never interfere with FIBA competitions and teams should qualify for the Euroleague via their national leagues and not thanks to having money or being a team from a "big city". The major difference before was the difference in court size. Since that has become less, European basketball has come way closer to the NBA in quality.
If you like better offensive skills, individual oriented basketball, flashy dunks, extravagant passes and three point shots from another planet, then the NBA is for you. If you like better defensive skills, team oriented basketball, teamwork, less and more meaningful matches, and both exciting and excited crowds, then you are a Euroleague fan. I am an NBA casual and a Euroleague diehard. You can be in both sides. However, I prefer Euroleague. Where clubs are clubs. Not franchises to be moved around from city to city.
@@newthrash1221 If you want to endure about 50 unnecessary games where your worst teams lose on purpose and your biggest stars don't bother to show up in order for you get to the Playoffs, be my guest. Also most of your fanbase sounds like a church.
@newthrash1221. In an NBA fan, but with such an arrogant comment like that, I can tell you don't really understand good hardnose basketball where the offense is actually challenged when you write off the Euroleague so fast. The NBA has the best talent, but the product is way worse than it could be. If the NBA talent has to go up against rules that actually allowed defense to be effective, that would be the best all around product no question.
@@Biggiiful No it's okay. Let him watch games that end with a score of 150-147 and think he is watching great basketball. Just wake me up when your defenders start pulling out the red carpet for the opponents, so I can laugh my a off.
You forgot to mention that each of Euroleague teams has its own national championship, which has primary importance for most of them. It is also true that Euroleague teams are generally much stronger than the other national teams, therefore they don’t put the same intensity on those games in order to spare energies for Euroleague.
I know i would NOT change the f4. My uncle is an Oly fan and the 2012 f4 win against Cska is one of the best moments in his life. A game series would be more fair, but it would definetly not have the magic of the f4.
They can play best of 3 f4 tournament for like 2 weeks or something. Don't know if they can make that financially. They can sell series tickets, or by game. Or something like this, they play 2 games, and if it's 1-1 series, the 2nd game go in overtime tie breaker. where teams go to play first to 20 points or something like that. Or you play 2 overtimes of 5 minutes...
I agree on the F4 staying as it is as a Panathinaikos fan. A best of 3 or 5 in everything guarantees that no surprises take place. The Efes-Olympiacos match in 2022 had one of the best finishes I've seen in my life with Efes advancing to the Final and winning it all. I am not sure this would happen in a best of 3. Same for Maccabi beating CSKA in 2014, etc.
The final four is what makes the euroleague unique. In my opinion it brought us more spectacular games than the NBA playoffs. These games are so intense and can cause unexpecting upsets. It's a celebration of the game of baskebtall and also brings countries which are not that strong in basketball to showcase the top level.
Comparing the Euro League (which is an international competition) to the NBA is a bit of a problem because they work in different ways. Only the best teams from the respective European countries play in the Euro League, so the Euro League is not the main competition of any team, it's the bonus competition, often for doing well in their national competition (which could be compared to the NBA). This is also the reason why you probably don't have one shop to get a jersey of club X in the Euro League. You can get the jersey of the club in their respective online shops or online shops of the manufacturers, which is a normal thing as clubs are much more autonomous than in the NBA - and, again, the Euro League is not the main competition of a club, even if it's the most prestigious one. It's like if the US, Canada, Mexico, and maybe all the caribbean countries would create an international league where the best teams of all those countries would compete in in parallel to their national leagues. So the Euro League can and will never have the amount of games that a national league has because it would be impossible from a scheduling standpoint as well as the amount of games players would have to play. Regarding the NBA's issues...I don't think fewer games is the solution for the NBA. As other content creators on YT have pointed out previously, the issue is that players these days play so many games at a young age that they are overplayed a lot earlier in their careers and injuries start piling up, so they have to be load managed like crazy. This is where things have to change. Players played 82 game seasons in the NBA for a long time and back then there wasn't this load management craze like we have today. Regarding the actual play, the NBA really needs to enforce traveling and flopping rules, watching this stuff is such a turn-off, it's crazy, especially when you watched the NBA like it was played in the 80s and 90s.
In response to your load management section: while I dont necessarily disagree with your sentiment that high school kids are becoming way over worked, I don't like the argument that "players back in the day played 82 and they got hurt less". It's a bad argument because the level of the average athlete in the nba, is significantly higher than the average athlete in the 1980s. Dudes were smoking cigarettes in the locker rooms after the games in the 1980s. Nowadays in the nba, EVERY player is taking their body and athleticism seriously, the increased spacing has lead to more drives to the rim and more explosive plays on average. The average athlete in today's nba can run faster, accelerate quicker, jump higher, and stop on a dime better. All of these factors add into the notable increase in injuries over the last decade. A lot of the problems simply aren't fixable, but are rather taking the increase in athleticism to it's logical conclusion.
A good number of those teams are locked into Euroleague regardless of how they do domestically because they're partners in the league. It's a semi-closed league. Barca and Real Madrid, for example, don't have to worry about qualifying for Euro League.
@@fighterck6241While this is true I think it's also kind of a circle. If you do poorly in your league I doubt that you will stay in the Euro League indefinitely? And playing in Euro League will probably get you the most money, the most prestige, hence you can sign the best players and thus do well in the national competitions?
This is what i wanted to write but noted your comment. Euro League is not really a comparison to NBA and 34 games is plenty enough as lets say Kauno Zalgiris - Lithuanian BC plays in LKL ( Lithuanian National League ), Euro League and King Mindaugas Cup ... i believe same are for other Eu teams - 2-3 or 4 different championships/cups over a year so for teams is a lot of games .. yes, some cups/leagues and matches are walk in a park and National Cup with Euro League is main priorities but still - European teams has a lot of matches over a year if you add them.
I tihnk they could extend the season in NBA and leave more time between matches. 2-3 days per game would help with the load management as well I think.
With a best of five finals in the Euroleague there would be less surprises. Partizan or Zalgiris will have it tougher to win in a best of five finals against Real Madrid or Panathinaikos (maybe this year?).
Imagine Obradović coaching the Hawks in the NBA I already see Trae sitting on the bench 3 minutes in for not playing D the way he wants him to play and ofc Obradović being bright red in the face yelling I please you Trae
With the NBA implementing the in season tournament I would love to see European teams invited would help the game grow and would be interesting to the see the different play styles clash
00:27 | NBA Regular Season: Competitiveness issues due to 82 games, back-to-backs, and load management affecting player performance. 02:52 | Euroleague Playoffs: Euroleague implementing play-in tournament to improve competitiveness and fairness. 03:39 | Euroleague Play-in Tournament Debate: Opinions divided on its impact on Euroleague competitiveness. 08:22 | Scoring Rules: Consider adopting NBA's defensive 3-second rule; encourage stricter calls on travels for better defense. 10:05 | Court Spacing and Game Length: Euroleague could widen court, reduce timeouts for a more attractive, faster-paced game.
There is a reason those rules were created in the NBA. When they were legal it broke the game, because the level of athletes the NBA has. Some of these points on both sides are hyperbolic. And both are definitely already taking notes on each other.
One thing you need to understand about the marketing of euroleague is that each team markets itself instead of there being a centraliced marketing by the league and this is more than unlikely to ever change. Teams like FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid or Olympiakos Pyräos are not only Basketball teams. They are also soccer teams and often other sports as well. They do the marketing for basketball as a part of their marketing strategy for their own franchise which is most often focussed on the soccer team and they won't allow the league to take away from that. Also keep in mind that all those teams are also playing in national leagues of their respective countries. So they are having additional matches during the season and need to do marketing for that as well which Euroleague can't really do as those matches are outside of euroleague.
Very good video. I learned a lot about how euro league is different. I’ve been thinking of watching some euro league and this video will be useful when I do.
If too many teams would get into playoffs then the regular season will mean less as you may play bad and still get to playoffs. On the other hand 10 out of 20 getting into it seems fine for me. You still need to be in the better playing half. I wouldn't make a tournament out of it thought. Just 7th plays 10th and 8th plays 9th for 2 places in the playoffs quarterfinals. Also I don't think Euroleague should change things to attract fans from other continents. Home fans are the most important and they are creating the atmosphere. They are the Euroleague.
I agree that both leagues have room to improve, there is no denying that. But in my opinion the current euroleague is ok with what it is because that makes it unique. Same applies to the NBA. I also doubt how close the leagues could become because of the culture. Everything aside, you consistently make good videos and keep it up!
The NBA would improve massively if they reduce the number of games significantly. They could have way better broadcasting times for the interantional audience. Just look at the NFL. They have become more popular in europe than the NBA I would say due to their small number of games and favorable schedule times.
@@davinnicode Good point. However as he said in the video, the players would not want to lose out on a paycheck in case there would be less games. About brodcasting though, its completely true. In Europe you can rarely afford to be up at around 2 am to watch an NBA game. Instead I think it would be alot better if the just shorten the quarters to 40 min.
- Play-in is not what I would support. Like, it's not enough that no8 has to play with no1, and then also has an away game disadvantage. But now they have to travel and fight for a few more games and days. Just give no1&2 direct semifinal tickets. - Euroleague already has big differences within club budgets and permanent win favorites. Adding 3 games to win semifinals and finals would only increase differences and create monopolies, see football CL. Final4, if lucky, can give outsiders bigger chance for surprise.
EuroLeague needs to promote itself better, I’m from UK I literally don’t know a single person that knows about EuroLeague (they know about NBA though) which is strange as EuroLeague is more accessible and on at normal times for us
I mean, most of these basket teams are owned by the football team. The football teams likely pays for most of these basket, women soccer, handball, water polo, etc. teams.
Changing the goaltending rule in the NBA would be too crazy. They are the best skilled athletes and can basically get to the ball whenever they want. Trades and a common marketing for the Euroleage is complicated because it's different countries. That means different cultures, taxing and economic value.
While trading is cool and all, it is impossible to implement in the EuroLeague with different countries and languages and a much wider scale. Ik that the NBA has Canada but it is still an ENglish speaking country and it is very close to US soil. Imagine you are living in Spain and your agent told you that you are traded to Turkey with different languages and culture. Now that is shocking for anyone tbh
I guess this suggestion comes more from a fans perspective and not the players 😀 Surely that would be a massive inconvenience for them, even in the US, where as you say everything is pretty similar regardless of where you play, the players have a lot of stress when being traded. But stil... Imagine Mike James has been traded for half of Valencia's roster, that would be funny as hell 😂
@@BasketNews_com The other guy doesn't seem to grasp that in the EU this would simply be impossible. It's simply against the law. You can not force a contract on a player which you would need to do here to make this happen. Unlike in the US contracts are with teams. You signa contract for X years for Y/week.(don't know about basketball but in soccer pay is per week so I'm going with that). If that team tells you they traded you for somebody the player just goes "no you didn't, lol." and he would could just decide to wait out his contract. Get his X years worth of Y money/week and then go as a free agent to another team. Leaving the team he left with nothing. In short, individuals hold power here. Not leagues or teams. Nothing can happen with player contracts without the player's consent. If a soccer player gets bought for 500 million by some Arabian club he can just go "not going" and his team misses on on 500 million. The team has no power to force a player to do jack shit.
I wish they don't change the Euroleague too mutch, it being the way it is is what makes it as special as it is now. The Euroleague is a place where you can watch "real" basketball with some of the best players in the world. The NBA is a "show oriented" league and the Euroleague shouldn't strive to be a weaker version of that... They should strive to keep their traditional brand of basketball at all cost and shine with something that the NBA cannot provide in today's day and age (asside from the NBA playoffs)
Final Four is fun but a bit unfair at the current state (34 games + Playoffs). As an Olympiacos fan I felt both sides of the story (unfair for the other team, and unfair for Olympiacos). But ok, i mean as the euroleague format was until 2016( first round, second round, playoffs, final four) with less games (that had the meaning of a knockout game) the final four seamed ok, but now it seems like either you are or bad for 34 games at the regular season, it has small importance, cause the whole story is if you are good in the weekend of the final four. The format is like the Euroleague ends at the playoffs and then is a different 3 day competition (the best in this 3 day competition wins, but not necessarily the worthiest one in the whole 37-39 game season).
One rule change, that is in line with the Refs, is calling a stricter game are the illegal screens that NBA players like Draymond, Sabonis, Jokic, etc. that are allowed by the refs make the game super ambiguous to call and makes it hard to watch.
I’ll comment as I go: Play in will hurt the competition. Expanding a post-season field has, in all situations I’m aware of, diminished the importance of regular season performance as a team doesn’t need to be as good to get to the end season tournament. Regular season, particularly longer ones, are the most fair way of judging a team. Shortening it increases randomness and inherently decreases competitive integrity. If they’re not good enough to qualify, too bad they had the whole season to make up that difference.
Like you said, if a team fails to make the playoffs after 82 games, then why create a play-in tournament and give these teams even more chances? Too bad. So, I agree, adding the play-in tournament is pointless since they have 82 games. Also, I would argue that less games does force the league to actually take the regular season more seriously. If every team plays each other 2 times (1 on the road and 1 on home), that’s 58 games. Instead of 58, the NBA chose 82. That means certain teams play each other 3-4 times. Why? To further prove my point, players don’t even try UNTIL the 2nd half of the season. If that’s the case, then we don’t need 82 games. Also, some people don’t actually watch all 82 games. By decreasing the games, I would argue more people would tune in to watch the games. NFL has 16 games. Enough said. Do the math: 82 - 58 = 24 games. Those 24 games are unneeded. Like you said, if a team fails to playoffs, then you suck. Should’ve try harder in the regular season.
@@alohatigers1199 I agree and disagree. The concept of shortening the season does make individual games more important, but as I briefly mentioned in my initial comment, it also increases randomness and harms the competitive integrity. I would argue rather we should limit the number of teams in the post-season. It achieves a similar, if not outright same, effect as teams at the top will have to be more competitive to make the end season tournament. This should also result in stars playing more games, if only to get the safety net of a lead would have should an issue come up. Without a relegation system, and the draft to reward tanking (which I don’t really think can be solved in the current format), you’re always going to have teams that don’t care to compete. But the league would be more competitive if instead of 10 teams per conference only the top 4 made it to the post season (or if you really want the play in system top 5). The issue with shortening the regular season is that anomalies become far too impactful. Random one off games like missing 27 straight 3s is a bigger deal. But also it increases the impact of injuries. If Luka was out for 20g b/c of a bruised pinkie on his offhand, that sucks in an 82 game season where you’re losing your star for nearly a quarter. But you still have 62 games to make up whatever deficit was caused. In a 58 game season, that same 20g injury is catastrophic. You just lost your star for over a third of the season, and you may as well just begin tanking and hope you get something from the draft rather than a likely fruitless endeavour of failing to make the post season. It’s less justified to say git gud when variables outside the control of the players are more impactful imho.
Actually my opinion has shifted a bit, after reading your comments guys ☺I agree that in the NBA this tournament only adds entertainment and extra cash for the league, but not the actual competitiveness. 82 games is enough to determine who's better, as you said. But when we're talking about the EuroLeague, there are fewer teams, hence fewer games but also smaller percentage of teams make it to the post season. In the NBA you have over 50% (16 of 30) of teams making it, while in the EuroLeague it's under 50% (8 of 18). That's why I'd argue the EuroLeague NEEDS it, while the NBA could do without it.
@@BasketNews_com Plus in the Euroleague we have a habit of "choosing our opponents" in the last games. So, a Play-In tournament would make things more unpredictable. And I am saying that as a supporter of a team that has the aspirations to reach the top 4 in the rankings this season.
Please consider me for the Jokic jersey, I’m in Australia, I’ve followed Denver & Jokic since 2018-2019 season. I love your video, great analysis, both leagues can adapt methods from each to improve, let’s hope some changes are made
@@lamoten8723 Relegation does the opposite of helping small teams. Otherwise, those small teams have no chance of winning. Right now, the Cavs are in a good spot post lebron era. But if there’s relegation, the Cavs wouldn’t be where they are today.
@@alohatigers1199 another problem is franchising.... which let's be honest... it's pretty bad for relegation system cuz players could play for either team really
What I think a lot of Europeans don’t understand about the NBA is that there is actually too much talent. The league is addressing this issue by expanding. On a given team there could be 2 or 3 of the top 50 basketball players in the world. And it has been proven that the current NBA is not playing less defense or worse defense it’s that the offense talent overmatches it.
Enough talent, but the player's iq is soooo low they don't even use a playbook anymore. On top of that, a lot of NBA players are beyond full of themselves.
Wrong. There's talent, or better say athleticism, but it can not really shine. That's because there's no real antagonism or team spirit. Modern nba seems like an individual sport inside a team sport. If u watch euroleague like us, there's no way u can take seriously nba and watch a.full game
I disagree on expanding and the idea that there’s too many talent, I would argue that role players are still role players. If there’s too many talent, I would expect bench players would be good but they aren’t.
I dont think Eurloeague should add trades, considering players would have to move countries in some occasions, the structure of the contracts and off season is fine!
I don't think not having trades affects us a lot. Football works with Summer and Winter transfer windows, in Summer and January, and it works out just fine. No constant mid-season adjustments.
Great video. You do a really nice job of highlighting the great qualities in each league. However, the only point where I might disagree is that the flipside of your point about the rules favoring offense in the NBA is that those very rules that make it harder to score, also make it EASIER to defend and therefore lead to the possibility of lazier defense (which is kind of the case in 1990s/early-2000s NBA) and less innovation on that side of the floor. To quote JJ Redick: "You know why it's so hard to play defense in the NBA? It's not 'cause we can't and it's not 'cause we don't try. It's 'cause there's f**king space and the players are so good." In this sense those very NBA rules favoring the offense have also lead to some outstanding defenders like Kawhi, Giannis, Gobert, Draymond, Jaden McDaniels, JJJ, Caruso, Anunoby, Beverly, Bridges, Claxton, Ben Simmons, and a ton of other players. The NBA rules also breed more innovation in terms of the range/types of defenses played. This is why, again, Redick is right to point out the myth that NBA players in the 1990s were just all-around "better" defenders and why I am skeptical that incorporating more EuroLeague rules is needed to make NBA defense better.
Also note that because in euroleague, you play on a shorter court, there’s no doubt that even Trae Young can look good on defense. Even though he’s average at best. Does that mean if he plays in Europe, he will be above average defender?
Great video! I only need to add the salary cap here. Euroleague has to introduce the salary cap. This would truly make the league more competitive and we won’t see the same teams every year in the final 4.
They should hv a euro nba tournament like football when champions league winner face libertadores winner... of course they hv to figure out which rule they r using
I remember the EuroCup was played over 3 games back in 2017 and the atmosphere in Valencia and Malaga was insane. The Final Four HAS to be played over 3 games
F4 is a signature event of Euroleague, this should not change! It creates some unique moments like this years f4 and the lull's game winning shot. Euroleague needs to focus on expanding the fanbase of the league. The marketing should step up, thats why the Dubai thing it may be a great idea. Furthermore, i think the way Formula 1 with Drive to Survive expand its fanbase should somehow followed from Euroleague, ok may its more difficult, but having a TV series about every Euroleague season, with so many teams and unique moments, i think will bring more people to follow the league.
Great video and great channel. I prefer a coach dominant league to a player dominant league. I guess that's because I prefer team basketball to star basketball. I would definitely like to see a wider court because this would spread out the game and especially the transition game. Keep up the good work.

I'm a Mavericks fan and you are absolutely right about needing players to stay with a franchise for the fanbase to grow organically. In Dallas, most people are Cowboys (American football) fans, and before Dirk, basketball was a minor sport. If we had not had Dirk for 21 straight years and instead churned through a bunch of different star players, the Mavs would still be seen as a minor team in Dallas. Because of Dirk and even Luka now, the Mavericks are very close to the Cowboys in terms of fan popularity and loyalty.
What I would really like to see is a North American All Star vs EU All Star game. One year in Europe with FIBA rules, the next in North America with NBA rules.
What if the Euroleague made a separate playoffs or playoff B to get some more games and this would allow the winning teams to have better free agent stipulations and additional bonuses for each team and player

you left out the fact that EuroLeague is not a competition taking place in a single country. American states are not like European countries - different nations, different people, different GDPs hence different budgets. the only thing NBA and EuroLeague have in common is the fact that they both play basketball. everything else is a different story in Europe. Also, what you said about having favourite players and not teams, this happens at a lower rate in football.
Absolutely not on basket interference and goaltending!!!! That's a nonstarter... but the NBA SHOULD change the three second rule to a five second rule in my opinion. Controversially I think they should consider moving the three-point line back slightly as well. In an ideal world to balance the shot chart they could make mid range shots worth 2.5 but that's never gonna happen.
If Jordan plays 82 games and feels fine, it's fine. If Jerry West plays 82 games and feels fine, it's fine. It's not the number of games being the problem, it's the players.
you missed a bit point, EUROLEAGUE is a CUP, just named EUROLEAGUE. All Teams have their own national league they play in. Also additional cups ex: FIBA Eurocup. Teams in europe play a lot more games than the euroleague but in different competitions. The teams change as they can qualify for the euroleague, while also playing national with the option of relegation. Also the rules are a bit different. The ecosystem with draft is a BAD idea. Probably the best idea would be to take some points from the Premier League
NBA has 30 teams, you would think that if they play each other 2 times, it would be 58 games total. BUT, certain teams play 3-4 times. Which means there are 82 games total. On top of the play-in tournament for those bum teams that didn’t make playoffs AFTER playing 82 games. I can see why the regular season is so meaningless. Players don’t try hard until the 2nd half of the regular season. NFL has 16 games, that means every game counts. I would argue more people will tune in to watch 58 games than 82 games.
I largely agree; however, I believe the Euroleague can become more 'welcoming' to European football fans by implementing two key initiatives: A) Clearer Qualification Format: I still struggle to understand why qualifying for the Euroleague is a complicated process, especially when compared to the UCL (UEFA Champions League) qualification in football. The perfect Euroleague should have clear sporting criteria for A licenses, EL qualification, and EC qualification. B) Bringing Football Clubs to European Basketball: Many football clubs lack corresponding basketball teams. Teams like Roma, Marseille, or Dortmund don't have equivalent basketball counterparts. Now, imagine if they did - it could attract football fans to basketball and, in turn, to European basketball as well.
To be honest the 8team playoff ok, but maybe broaden the # teams in you teg Euroleague season. Maybe a round robbin kinda of playoffs to add to it, try to close disparity in budgets, eliminate the goal tending thing
One main thing which makes me like the NBA over other types of sports (or FIBA) is the focus on the players, instead of the teams. I still have a preference for 1 or 2 teams, but it allows me to watch other games too, just because there are players in it that I enjoy watching or that have been former players on a team I follow, opening up more of the league to being enjoyable to watch. At some point, you know so many of the players that you become invested in almost the entire league and you certainly watch more games because of it. I think it is a good model, especially for a sport that only uses 5 players on a court at the same time. With football (soccer for american people) there are 11 players on a court, so there is far less individual influence on the game by a single player than in a basketball game.
Excellent video with great factual insights between the comparison of the 2 biggest leagues in the world that has been highlighted in great detail with some nice funny vids in there lol This video should be watched by every bball fan in the US that can enrich their knowledge of what the Euroleague is about that consists of different countries taking part. The one thing i think you may not have mentioned is how open-minded the NBA has become ever since Adam Silver took over and how much he has studied other leagues and in particular the European league to implement certain aspects into the NBA (most recently the play-in tournament). The Euroleague sounds pretty straight forward and stick to their guns as no dramatic changes occur with the exception of the play-in they just adapted- which much like the play-in in the NBA wasnt well received but then became very popular. The one thing i'm not a big fan of the Euroleague is what was mentioned in the video about the big budget teams almost always being in the top seeds which doesnt leave that much space for smaller teams from smaller countries to make noise and be the underdog. For the NBA - in the last 8 years there has been 4 new championship winners for their 1st time in their franchise ( Cavs, Raptors, Bucks, Nuggets) so this has been very refreshing in creating that parity regardless of how big each teams budget is which is something that can hardly change with the Euroleague. Where can we continue debating this topic (apart from UA-cam comments) as its great hearing from people from around the world??
@@cycleoflife565 true which was almost 50 years ago but also another important common fact with those 4 teams is that they are all small market teams and not your usual expected NY, LA, Barcelona, Real Madrid type of teams so the NBA has done a great job giving every team an equal shot of winning it under the salary cap rules

I think they should add a second league under the nba and just like the PBL, nba teams that play terribly get relegated and vice Versa. Adding a relegation system I think that would make things more competitive
Bro I don't think you understand how much of a big deal teams getting a 20% cap discount for supermax player contracts would have. That would be earth shattering.
100% aggrees on marketing. I mean I live in Prais and the only basketball stores we have sell NBA merch... Euroleague needs to market themselves better. I would also love if the sponsors logo could be smaller on their jerseys like in the NBA, I mean what's the point in spending 100 euros for a jersey if it's mainly a giant ad.
The Americans are so ignorant talking about the outside NBA, for my the eurloegue playoffs are actually better than the NBA, also its difficult to have a culture of basketball when Eurolegue have a very low views, but just thing why the NBA wanted to buy the Eurolegue? Because it's starting to have more name in basketball, save my word in 10 years the NBA will have a very difficult problem
Personally I agree with most of what you said outside of widening the court in euroleague. I think it should be the other way around. NBA should make the court smaller. Then remove defensive three seconds. I haven't really watched much NBA because although I love offense, I need defense as well. I think like you mentioned with less space, and the three second rule gone, you have more play styles that are viable.
Τhe NBA budget cap salutes you my friend. That should have been your number 1 thing for Euroleague to copy from the NBA. Basketball teams in Europe has to compete with FC Barcelona and FC Real Madrid who has unlimited budget! They get Football sponsor money to Euroleague.. This is ridiculous.
3-5-7 games series look good... mostly in terms of content and its providers.. ;) but in terms of GAME, its quality, based on the weight of each game, single elimination games are better! if you are comparing NBA playoff, ho about to compare to NCAA March Madness? ;) Intensity, drama, and emotions in March Madness are winning! That is what Euroleague Final Four is bringing to the table. And that is probably the most exciting part of Euroleague as for now...
It aint about the amount of pts both teams can score, but havibg closer games instead of blow out, and mathematically, lower scoring games leads to closer finishes, and thats more entertaining
Yeah it would like when was younger I couldn't afford to go to basketball games I only went to 1 knick game my first 18 19 years and the only game Melo didn't play vs Toronto ans derozan either I'm happy now that I got a chance to go to a game when I want but imagine those that never get another opp
The nba needs to stop allowing illegal screens, as a european that's what gets on my nerves the most they might have more talent but they still haven't learnt how to set a proper screen.
It’s so funny to see this and see that Europe likes that the people support the local club and doesn’t want the tourism fans like the nba that makes European Sportevents for me special because the flair is so different and much better. I think the most rule changes that the euro league should adopt are not really what anyone outside of the USA want. It’s as usual you see that in every sport like football etc the fans want to see the sport and not the globe trotters.
My solution to improving the NBA: 1) Eliminating the Play-in tournament. If a team failed makes the playoffs, that’s your fault. 2) Implement a double round Robin in the regular season. That means there would 58 games total. NOT 82 games. 3) Best of 3 playoff series rather than best 7. I don’t pay attention to the first 3 playoff games. I only watch games 4-7. If that’s the case, then I prefer best of 3 so that if a team is 2-0 or 1-1, I’m definitely watching.
bro what are you talking about every solution that you proposed is dumber than the previous one.If any of those proposals where implemented the nba would lose serious money. And the other dumbass finds no issue with the logic of it🤦♂🤦♂🤦♂
I've said it before and I'll say it again. If basketball was just *HALF* as big in Europe as football is, a lot of NBA players would be out of a job right now... Basketball is still tiny here, and for every couple thousand kids with a football at their feet, you'll find 1 with a basketball in their hands. So when you consider that and how 3 or 4 of the current top 10 players in the NBA came out of Europe, then imagine what it'd look like if we actually took the sport seriously. European takeover, like it or not...
Maybe in the UK that is the case, but in many countries in Europe, it is either our national sport, or the sport where we've been most happy watching. So it is either 1st, or 2nd by a narrow margin.
@@DimShamrock Sorry but that's just simply not true. Basketball is only popular in a select few European counties, not many. And even then, football heavily outweighs it in alot of those countries (think France, Germany and Spain)
@@cdknowledge Yeah but in Lithuania it is a national sport. And in Greece, Turkey, Serbia, and most Yugoslav countries basketball is almost equal to football. Russia too. National football is not as big in all European countries as it is in the UK, just so you know. Not everybody can spend 50 million every season. You do know that not only Western Europe exists right? By your logic, cricket should always be small, because it is solely followed by the British Isles and France. Except in those regions, it is amateur everywhere.
@@DimShamrock i never specified by country, i just stated that in Europe - as a collective - it's popularity pales in comparison to football. Which is just an irrefutable fact. Yes, you have certain little spots on the map that favour basketball more than others, but in general, it's still a very niche sport here. Here's something i found interesting: The top 2 European nations in the FIBA rankings right now are Spain and France, both countries in which football is by far the dominant sport. This would mean that, despite basketball being less popular in those counties than it is in the countries you named, their talent pool is generally of a higher quality. So now, take that same idea, and increase basketball's popularity in Spain and France to the magnitude of the countries you named, and that same talent pool now suddenly not only gets multiplied by X amount, but more importantly, it improves. A higher level of popularity = more competition. More competition = a higher base skill level. Higher base skill level = better players are made. That's essentially the formula to why Americans are better at basketball than everyone else. Their base skill level is simply higher than everyone else's, because the sport has already been popular there for decades. And that same formula just isn't applicable to European countries. Which brings me back to my initial point. The fact that a few of the top 5-10 current players in the NBA/world came from Europe, let's me know everything i need to know about just how dominant we would be if basketball was actually a big deal here.
I don´t think trades would help Euroleague, especially when you consider the teams are based in different countries. They are not all in the eurozone, or even part of the EU/Schengen space. You would end up trading a player to a country they don´t know, where they speak a language they don´t understand, that uses a different currency, where they might need a permit to live in (and for some reason might be declined). If you are going to have this type of impact on someones life, at least they need to have a veto. In the NBA most that can happen is you go to Canada. In Euroleague you´d end up in a country with an alphabet you can´t even read or make anything out of it, like Israel or Greece (or Russia, now removed from Euroleague).
Here's how you make the regular season matter, use baseball's format. Prioritize divisions, wild cards. And shrink the season to 62 games instead of 82
This would all be pretty nice but you just have to keep in mind that not all the same teams are in euroleague every year, so some of these like the draft couldnt work and also those teams have to play in thier respective countrya league so u cant change the rules like making the court bigger or making it so teams play more games in the platoffs, anyway i wasnt trying to hate and just wanned to make some things clear. Great video and you earned urself a sub
I would personally decrease the number of timeouts to one per quarter, encourage refs to call more charges on dunks, and give three free throws for every tactical foul.
Nothing to learn from NBA, especially NO to widening the court. We need to build popularity in Europe, not China or the US. We have different mentality. Europeans like a physical, tough game and real struggle. I'm so sick of hearing people say more points equals more entertainment. Look at how europeans love football,, a sport with few goals per two hour game. NBA became a circus with very athetic performers and drama off the court.
NBA should do away with the ping pong balls and have a tournament. Have a week between the end of the regular season and the start of the playoffs and do the draft order tournament then. It will work better when there are 32 teams, 16 in the playoffs, 16 out. 16v16 from each conference, 15v15... 2v2, and 1v1. Teams are not incentivized to tank bc you only have a 50% chance to move up in the order.
I think the NBA can learn from the Euroleague to make it even more competitive and harder. Trim down the regular season to 56 games, after that conduct the In-season tourneys for the top 24 teams and then in those teams who played the in season tourney only the top 8 of both conferences advances, though its not a Euroleague setup but perhaps can make the game competitive all year long. And by the use of Euroleague court size and rules.
For the NBA, more teams such as an additional at least two, Euroleague schedule with teams playing each other twice with a total of about 60 games, 12 teams in each division in the playoffs with the first four having a bye round and the last eight an additional which would substitute for some of the total number of games, and a playout tournament where the best of the worst teams gets the highest number in the draft. That way all teams would be competitive all season long, there would be no tanking, an almost equal amount of games but all or most supercompetitive as every game would matter ( finishing top four and having bye round and home court advantage, having home court in the additional round or the playout tournament ). For Euroleague extending the league, more teams and more countries to around 30-32, to increase the market. We need big markets such as the UK, Poland, Eastern Europe ( there has to be a team in Finland, Czech Republic or Hungary, and there is no excuse for no teams in Croatia or Slovenia), and possibly extend it to near abroad such Egypt, Arab countries. There is also historic and great clubs that currently have no chance participating in the league such as Aris, Paok, Galatasaray, Cibona, Varese, that need to at least have a chance.Increase the number of games, reduce the number of domestic commitments ( Euroleague teams could participate from the playoffs domestically), increase the number of playoff teams to 16 creating an additional round, stop the F4 nonsense and create an all star weekend as it is like that anyways with celebrities appearing and reporters asking the same boring questions for more than three days, when all the actual fans care is to watch their team compete, as much as possible, to have the chance to see them at home, and to give the best team the best chance to win everything and not be dependent on of fluke game...
I agree with everything except that EuroLeague teams should allow players to be more vocal on social media, especially regarding topics not directly related to basketball. Millions of people follow those athletes and because of that, their views and opinions can impact public opinion drastically. However, those views are not inherently more valuable that those of an average person, so I think that they should stick to what they're doing best: playing basketball. Everything celebrities say on social media can be entertaining, that's true, but it can also be dangerous since we don't know what kind of impact it will have on regular people (Let's be honest, average person is not really the brightest).

The NBA’s influence is unmatched.
The 90’s NBA rules need to come back. That’s the solution for the NBA.
@@luka99medakIt wasn’t always that way. 2000s and past nba crowds were great. Even today you get some flashes. But Euro league is way better

Thanks for putting this video in a sentence. Very well said!
If you like better offensive skills, individual oriented basketball, flashy dunks, extravagant passes and three point shots from another planet,
then the NBA is for you.

Me personally, best of 3 is the best amount.

Always welcome to check out all the other European - American basketball comparison videos on our channel! 🙏
Thank you!!!
EuroLeague needs to promote itself better, I’m from UK I literally don’t know a single person that knows about EuroLeague (they know about NBA though) which is strange as EuroLeague is more accessible and on at normal times for us
The Euro league arena atmospheres looks like the football atmospheres which is quite unique
That means different cultures, taxing and economic value.
i agree with this u would get mid air collisions all the time it u could put back/swat a bouncing ball
@@BasketNews_com
The other guy doesn't seem to grasp that in the EU this would simply be impossible.

Man, Euroleague crowds are LIVE! I'd love to go to one of these games just to experience the atmosphere they create.
Hopefully, you will be able to do it one day. A lifetime experience for sure
I’ll comment as I go:
Play in will hurt the competition.
@@alohatigers1199
I agree and disagree.
A EuroLeague All star game could be amazing
Please consider me for the Jokic jersey, I’m in Australia, I’ve followed Denver & Jokic since 2018-2019 season. I love your video, great analysis, both leagues can adapt methods from each to improve, let’s hope some changes are made
I think it would be cool to see the Euroleague playoffs handled like soccer (football). Cumulative score over home and away legs. Thoughts?
Don't involve cuntb@ll into this.
The nba actually suggested relegation to stop tanking
@@lamoten8723
Relegation does the opposite of helping small teams.
Some leagues use that format and i think euroleague used it before, can't remember
The wizards would disagree
Enough talent, but the player's iq is soooo low they don't even use a playbook anymore. On top of that, a lot of NBA players are beyond full of themselves.
@@jjay__don't disrespect kuzma and JP like that😂
It'd be just another thing to talk about for the media & fans I guess 😅
I don't think not having trades affects us a lot. Football works with Summer and Winter transfer windows, in Summer and January, and it works out just fine. No constant mid-season adjustments.
Awesome content. Loved the idea and research of the video
That's an interesting perspective 👏Thanks for the feedback!
Great video! I only need to add the salary cap here. Euroleague has to introduce the salary cap. This would truly make the league more competitive and we won’t see the same teams every year in the final 4.
Thanks! The new EuroLeague actually mentioned that EuroLeague is working on the salary cap.
Final 4 is the best thing ever!

They should hv a euro nba tournament like football when champions league winner face libertadores winner... of course they hv to figure out which rule they r using
There is the Intercontinental Cup, but it is between the FIBA champions.
EuroLeague on Netflix would be wild haha
Great video and great channel.
I prefer a coach dominant league to a player dominant league. I guess that's because I prefer team basketball to star basketball.
I would definitely like to see a wider court because this would spread out the game and especially the transition game.
Keep up the good work.
those were some GREAT points and observations I agreed with most if not all

Loyalty impacting cap would be great, as with if there was a reduction on cap impact if you drafted the talent. Even 10-15% would be so good.

Also european teams still need to play in their respective countries while playing euroleague midweek

That thumbnail is gold 😂 I need to see that Fusion
EuroLeague is not a cup, it's a tournament
NBA has 30 teams, you would think that if they play each other 2 times, it would be 58 games total. BUT, certain teams play 3-4 times. Which means there are 82 games total. On top of the play-in tournament for those bum teams that didn’t make playoffs AFTER playing 82 games.
I can see why the regular season is so meaningless. Players don’t try hard until the 2nd half of the regular season.
NFL has 16 games, that means every game counts.
I would argue more people will tune in to watch 58 games than 82 games.
This video is so good this guy could work for the league
I'll say this, it's easy to talk for me 😅
Problem is this all teams who play euroleguea also playe leguea games in their country so it's hard that they could play 4 5 games for semi finals

The final-4 is the heart and soul of eurolean basketball
I largely agree; however, I believe the Euroleague can become more 'welcoming' to European football fans by implementing two key initiatives:
A) Clearer Qualification Format:
I still struggle to understand why qualifying for the Euroleague is a complicated process, especially when compared to the UCL (UEFA Champions League) qualification in football. The perfect Euroleague should have clear sporting criteria for A licenses, EL qualification, and EC qualification.
B) Bringing Football Clubs to European Basketball:
Many football clubs lack corresponding basketball teams.
Excellent video with great factual insights between the comparison of the 2 biggest leagues in the world that has been highlighted in great detail with some nice funny vids in there lol
This video should be watched by every bball fan in the US that can enrich their knowledge of what the Euroleague is about that consists of different countries taking part.
The Bucks first won a title with Kareem and Oscar Robertson.

100% aggrees on marketing. I mean I live in Prais and the only basketball stores we have sell NBA merch... Euroleague needs to market themselves better. The Americans are so ignorant talking about the outside NBA, for my the eurloegue playoffs are actually better than the NBA, also its difficult to have a culture of basketball when Eurolegue have a very low views, but just thing why the NBA wanted to buy the Eurolegue?

You can actually buy the Euroleague teams' jerseys, but you do at the clubs instead of with the league or any other centralised shop
Interesting take!

Basket ball is the only game on this planet which is played differently in a a handfull of countries, mainly for revenue reasons.
Fair point, never thought of that!
You've never watched MLS in the 90s then.
My solution to improving the NBA:
1) Eliminating the Play-in tournament.
Can't argue with the logic of it, but 58 games means the teams would lose way too much revenue 🤔 I think 72 is the only feasable number for the NBA
bro what are you talking about every solution that you proposed is dumber than the previous one.If any of those proposals where implemented the nba would lose serious money.
To be fair, when you look at it this way it's unbelievable what Jokic, Giannis & Luka achieved already 🤯
Here's something i found interesting:
The top 2 European nations in the FIBA rankings right now are Spain and France, both countries in which football is by far the dominant sport.
I went to the last day of the Phoenix suns season last year excited because i had never been to a game and then all the starters didn't play
Your channel is such a pleasure for basketball fans!!!🔥

Good points
Here's how you make the regular season matter, use baseball's format. Prioritize divisions, wild cards. And shrink the season to 62 games instead of 82
This would all be pretty nice but you just have to keep in mind that not all the same teams are in euroleague every year, so some of these like the draft couldnt work and also those teams have to play in thier respective countrya league so u cant change the rules like making the court bigger or making it so teams play more games in the platoffs, anyway i wasnt trying to hate and just wanned to make some things clear.

I appreciate your balanced perspective. I agree with you that the NBA should cut back to 72 games, btw. 🙂
That "fuck you, everybody!" Was very relatable
Always is.
How does a second chance for lower ranked teams diminish anything? Just want to have a opinion
And yet all American sports beside soccer are way more popular than euro sports so maybe you guys dont have it all figured out?
Don't you understand that if the NBA expands, they're gonna have to add at least 6 new teams?
I’m sry but this is a block essay. Please create paragraphs
