This is absolutely amazing 👏 😍 Wow them spy hopping and really focusing on what is going on around them.I love it and I love this footage ya are amazing also.. Thank you so much for this!!!
This subspecies of orca are smaller , also because it's so cold down there: their skin rarely molts off & algae grows on if that causes that coloring to not be pure black & white .
Aww, a mother (matriarch) a dad, two of their sons and a baby girl. These whales are type c killer whales so they are Antarctic. They eat seals and they have a round melon like southern residents, but these guys are transients because they do not eat fish, they eat seals. They were spyhopping here in this video because they were curious about you guys. They were also communicating to each other, awesome!
lol I know you are being sarcastic....these are probably the most intelligent mammals on earth, more intelligent than we are.....they definitely are not lost and do not need help finding a way out of there....if you are worried about them don't be....they are probably just taking a break from a hunting training session for the young ones......these Orca also look very healthy and strong.....they can swim very fast about 30 mph (which is extremely fast for salt water movement)........AND Orca can stay underwater for around 15 minutes ......that means they can swim for at least 7 miles in any direction without any problem.....that is very far.......they also have advanced sonar to identify holes for breathing and can break ice as well. no need to worry about them at all.......the thing we should all worry about is how humans are polluting the oceans with plastic and toxins and over-fishing and even the freight ships themselves......humans are the biggest threat to Orca.
@@jokers7890 Not humans are a threat to killer whales at all, but only bad people. Man can also be a god for animals. @@jokers7890 no, Type C orcas feed on fish (antarctic toothfish to be exact), so they are just either taking a breath or spyhopping, I guess is for fun or just checking what's up in the surface ^^
As fas as I know that is one of the main reasons for spy hoping, to look around and see what is in the surface. While we were there this was a common thing everyday. There were several different pods I am guessing cause the numbers of whales varied. It also looks like they are showing the calves how to do it as well.
@@findinggrowth743 I doubt they were stuck considering this pod is probably being lead by an experienced matriarch, and considering the fact that orcas have echolocation to see farther than usual
No they are not stuck........ there was plenty of open water for them to get to. At this point of our ice breaking patrol we had a complete channel broke out from the ice edge to McMurdo Station. We just cut a small chanel off of the main channel and stopped for the day. The whales followed us pretty much the entire time we were there. When we first started breaking ice it did help the whales by providing areas for them to surface allowing them to get to food sources quicker because they didn’t have to go all the way back out to the ice edge.
Definitely not stuck....they can easily swim 7+ miles in any direction.....they have superior radar to easily identify breathing holes....they can also break through ice to make breathing holes.....and they can swim up to around 30 mph. Aside from our technology, Orca otherwise have the intelligence advantage. They are extremely intelligent and would never get stuck. The only thing that might 'chase' them out of the water is to try and get away from artifical sonar created by submarines that causes them pain and is often a cause of other whales or dolphins breaching even if they realize they are going to die, tells you how intense the pain is.
@@jamessanford5296 i see, they have to stay with you (ice breaker ship)when you stop, they have to stop and waiting to continue, other means, they are trapped。during the time, they maybe cannot find any food。
Thank you…..It was attached to a pole / handle bar mount on a a long pole……just turned it on and set it down and rotated the pole as the whales were swimming
I’ve never heard of an orca attacking a human. We did have divers with us during this patrol and are not allowed to dive when orcas are visible around the ship.
nope....no record of this ever.....only Orca that have ever attacked a human are in captivity because humans are torturing them.....and i would attack as well in that case. but no, they are extremely intelligent probably more intelligent than we are.....they do not attack humans. they will attack other intelligent mammals such as seals, walruses, whales of all kinds and even dolphins....but it is for food and almost always hunt in a group. Orca are the #1 apex predator of ALL oceans. They often kill very large gray whales on the California coast by pulling them under the water and keeping them from getting to the surface to get air until they drown....there are Orca that feed on great white sharks.....every shark fears a Orca.... the only animals safe from Orca live in the deep ocean depths....because Orca cannot dive very deep. Sperm whales are the king predators of the deep ocean.
Nope! Just seeing what's on the surface, checking out the human activity and taking the opportunity to teach the young ones the benefits of spy hopping. 👍
Amazing footage!! Oddly, the males seem to outnumber the females in this group, if I'm not mistaken. Wonder why? I thought orcas lived in matriarchal groups?
Matriarchal doesnt mean there are more females in a pod than males. It just means that their social culture is lead by females. There were young whales in the pod (which could be either male or female) and one adult male.
@@AsianFury20 depends on the pod....males stay close to their mothers for the entire life, even after mating with other females......so a mother can 'accumulate' many males that stay by her side for life.....in this case, i think they were in a hunting training session for the young ones
Spyhopping isnt just used to find seals on iceflows. They can see very well both above and below the water. The whales are spyhopping to check out what the humans are doing.
These are Type C orcas, aka Ross Sea killer whales. They only eat fish so their spy-hopping is either simply out of curiosity or potentially looking for alternative channels through the ice.
No. I filmed this while I was on an ice breaker in Antarctica. The ship was stopped in the ice and the orcas would spy-hop in the ice we broke........I was told that as we break the ice, it makes it easier for the pods to get to food because they don’t have to swim as far to get to the ice edge. They pretty much followed the ship the majority of the time we were in the ice.
@@jamessanford5296 ok but what about land /sea animals that rely on the ice that is now broke? I wonder if ice breakers are impacting the eco system and if studies have been done on this?
@@bari2883 Large ships definitely have a negative impact on the eco-system, but it is not because of breaking up the ice. It is because of the noise pollution, water pollution, and even the propeller itself can injure animals. Noise pollution is a huge problem because noise travels very well in ocean water. Whales and dolphins like Orca are VERY sensitive to noise. There have been many studies showing that large vessels are detrimental to the well being of intelligent mammals like whales and dolphins because it causes them a great deal of stress and this hurts their overall health, including their hunting. Military ships and submarines that use sonar cause a great deal of pain as well.
