FAQ Time! Why do the kids still share a room? When we were looking at homes we specifically looked for one that had four rooms. Since I work from home, one could be used for the office, one for parents, and one each for the kids. Right now we only use two rooms for sleeping, as my desk fits in my bedroom and the kids prefer sleeping in the same room. If one of the kids wants to sleep in their own room, they can go to the middle one on the top floor or the one one the first floor. In Japan I know families that all sleep together in the same room, even with kids who are teenagers. It'd be kind of interesting to see how other families set up their rooms in Japan, but it's quite a personal thing to get access to not only people's homes, but beyond their living room and into their bedrooms.
Thanks LWIF -- so bottom line is: the kids prefer it. Cultures differ madly all over the world but it takes the Americans to take it all out of context. (BTW, I'm American...)
Life Where I'm From I think the reason so many people are asking why they share a room (even myself before seeing your comment) is because in America in California where I am from it's illegal to have your son and daughter share a room after one reaches the age of 6 I have no idea why because my mom had always had me and my brother share a room I never thought it was weird we were close but it is illegal here so not really the normal
This was excellent. As an architect and a Japanophile, it’s fascinating to see inside a typical modern home there. I appreciate the efficiency of the place and some of the unique features that I wish we had more of here (like the sink that fills the toilet tank). Thanks for these videos!
I've stayed in many places around the world and one of the things that were a bit frustrating for me was that they didn't always have an oven. I wish more homes around the world had that thing that both has microwave and oven. That would be very useful. (But then again, not all countries need oven to cook local food.)
My sister-in-law has a really new one, and man, it's soo good! We baked a chicken in there, and because it's a convection oven, it's so crispy yet juicy!
That's a big bed, maybe you're both too tall? My boyfriend and I are really short, and we share a single bed, well, I guess it also has to do with your sleeping habits lol
My husband and I share a king bed. He's over 6 feet, I'm at 5 feet 2 inches. We used to have a queen bed for years but having a king is so much more comfortable.
My parents use a King size cause my father is over 6 feet and my mother is 5’5” I myself am 6’2” would prefer a king size due to size and comfortability. I went on a band trip with class mates and shared a queen size with a classmate who is similar size of me and both of us slept on our sides cause of space restrictions.
IKR. Greg has got to be the most realistic and pleasant guy on UA-cam. Also the most interesting high quality videos. Relaxing and fun, that is the magic of LWIF!
I've been religiously watching your videos recently to feed my "homesick" feeling after spending a week in Japan with my host family. I tell you, once you step into Japan, it'll leave you a special place in your heart that you can never forget
I love videos such as this one. I will never be able to travel to foreign lands, so its good to be able to see different things. Thanks so much family☺
I homestayed with a Japanese family in 2015, and seeing this video made me remember a lot about the house because this one is so similar to the one I stated at.
I'm living in the Phil,26 and still sleeps with my sister 19 and bro 14... it's not a big deal tho.we're just used in this kind of situation. We have 2 extra rooms(my parents decide to extend since we've grown up) but still it feels so empty and we cant sleep alone.hahahahahaha *yeah 26 and still living with my family and it feels great😄 I REALLY LOVE THE BOND OF YOUR FAMILY like ours😅👍💕
I'm still slowly watching all your vids. I'm using them as kind of a "living in Japan Boot Camp" because you show the reality of what living in Japan is really like. Your vids are priceless when/if my efforts to move to Japan pay off.
I am so dense. I should have put two and two together and realized there was a reason you were making these videos about houses. Anyway, congrats on the new house, and I hope you have more new house tour videos for us, because I for one find them fascinating and enjoyable.
I notice that it is not the same one (design-wise) that you made a video (with John). I am wondering about the price. Is it higher or lower than that one?
this house is IDENTICAL to what the new houses in Melbourne, Aus look like!! this was wild to watch, as there is a neighbourhood of 400 of these 3 story units with this EXACT floor plan around the corner from me !!
You have such great videos! And I love that you let your kids sort of play around in your videos too. Watching them makes living alone in the Japanese countryside a bit less lonely. Thank you!
When I was a child, I had the sudden urge/curiosity to see the inside of various homes wherever I go. Your videos especially the Tokyo neighborhood satisfied my itch for that!
Lovely video Greg! Your house is beautiful! I see a lot of people are intrigued or shocked by the kids sharing a room. But it's not just a Japanese thing. I have a brother and we grew up in a small house, with my parents.. we had 2 rooms and a kitchen... so we shared a room up until we all moved to another country. I know people's issue is with Shin and Aiko being boy and girl, but if one of us, my brother or I were a girl, things wouldn't have been any different.. we still would've shared that room since it was the only one available. My point is, you obviously have spare rooms that could at any point be turned into a bedroom for either one of the kids.. and that's something that you'll decide when the time comes. You all seem happy now with your house and the room distribution and that shows. Again, great video. Most of us are grateful for the glimpse into your private life you've given us! Thanks Greg!
Been bingewatching your videos. In everyone, the two kids are so so charming. The young lady will grow up to be a charming and delightful hostess. She's a doll! Lovely family!❤
Everything seems really convenient, organised and easy to clean but the house doesn't have much personality. Could do with some nice decorations to add colour and make it cozy! Also, it's odd that you would have two spare rooms for storage and not a dedicated office space. Just my thoughts. Very interesting to see a modern family house in Japan. Thanks!
I think there's a few reasons for it, some that I don't even understand myself. Probably the most relevant is that we don't have heater/cooler units in every room, like the middle one. We can buy one, they're about ¥60,000 ($500USD) for one in a small room. Another reason may be that I like to watch videos off of my computer, so it's nice to have your bed in the same room. It also all fits. I didn't know if it would, but since it fits, it feels more convenient. I also like my room fairly minimal, so I kind of rather have all the storage containers in stuff in another room, and keep the room I'm in most of the time as clutter free as possible. Also, in the winter, I don't need to heat the current room we're in that much, being on the third floor with lots of light. If I were on the first floor, I'd need to use the heater all day in the winter.
I was also kind of curious as to why your work area was in the bedroom, but that makes sense. I'm living a bit minimalistic at the moment as I'm preparing for my move to Japan, and it really is much easier to focus on tasks at hand with a clean desk area, knowing you have everything you might possibly need organized in another room for quick access. It'll be a while before I move out of a 1LDK but a setup like this is definitely something to look forward to later in life. Thanks for making the video!
Life Where I'm From ah that makes more sense now! I'm in the UK where most homes have central heating installed. though to save energy and money, i sometimes use a small heater and move all my work and entertainment to one room. thanks for your reply!
Your videos are very high quality :) Your filming skills are good, the camera is good, and I think the modern look of the house just makes it more appealing to watch XD
Currently where I live (Midwest U.S) we have a studio apartment. You walk into the front door and the bedroom/livingroom is right there, we have a bed and tv. We also store our clothes and storage in a small closet in the livingroom. Go into the hallway and to the left is the kitchen/dining area, and to the right from the hallway is the bathroom. Pretty simple, I am so in awe of your all’s house though! You could fit one of our apartment on each floor!
Your videos are so awesome. I have a Technichial question. I have an UA-cam channel also and I was wondering what camera you are using for this video. It looks so good.
I don't think Greg will answer you but if you go to his channel he goes over all of his equipment in many of the vids. He might have one dedicated to this alone.
Very cool - I brought some Japanese expats coworkers over to my house in Rochester, NY and they were amazed how big it was and one of our other coworkers had a Japanese style garden that they said was almost the size of a Park in a Japanese city.
You’ve probably heard that every person has about 7 doppelgängers. You look exactly like my oldest brother.😳 Maybe that’s partly why I’m binge watching you videos haha
The beds are so different, honestly I would have a hard time sleeping on a Japanese style bed. We don't recycle-- here in our small town there are no facilities. I really admire Japan for their extensive recycling. Great video!
automatic light? nah, i don't buy it. it must be shintaro hiding behind the door again (and turning the lights on and off) just like the last home tour.
Man, Shin came out to be a pretty handsome boy, in both japanese and western standards. Teach him well or girls will snatch him everywhere. Cheers, nice home!
We have similar homes here as well here in California. It’s the trend due to limited land. They’re building up and also 3-levels as well. In fact, very similar to your house, just a lot bigger. The four bedrooms are all on the third level plus two bathrooms (master and full bath), with a loft common area, and balcony access for master bedroom. Don’t know why bedrooms are at the far top. It’s the hottest part of the house lol. Middle story is living area which includes living room, dining room, kitchen, full bathroom and main balcony access. Bottom level is two car garage, laundry room, guest bath, a smaller storage room, and spare room/den. That den was then converted into a workout room. Worked out nice because it’s the coolest and can be the coldest part of the house. Get a good workout and feel nice and cool while doing 👍.
Thanks for the video. With so many rooms why not give the children their own bedroom? I'm amazed how different the cultures are across the world. Where's wifey? I'd love to see her.
I think the desk would be better in the spare room. Nicer for your spouse to just have the room as a bedroom? Since you have the space. Kid’s room should swap and would make a better parent’s room.
I like how those small hallways separate each room from other parts of the house. I makes a good spot to store clutter out of the rooms, so you have more open living space.
What a beautiful new home! Congratulations! Quick question...most in our family are well over six feet tall, and my friend's family has very fat people. What do tall or large people live in? I know my friends husband, for instance, would need the Jaws of Life to get out of that bathroom. LOL
We have relatives who are six feet tall, so I don't think it's an issue. Yeah, the toilets in this house would be a bit tight, but I think these toilet rooms are a bit smaller than average in comparison to other new homes I've toured.
My brother is 6.5 feet tall (from Germany) and lives in Japan now and he says everything is fine, just in some hostels he has problems with the beds...
How exciting and wonderful for you and your family to be able to own one of these new, beautiful, modern Japanese houses! The bonus for me would be: NO YARDWORK!! Yay!!! Congratulations Greg and Family!
I'm pretty sure when Aiko grows a bit more she'll want to move to the spare room downstairs 😭 Teen girls are too shy to share a room with the younger brother
Gotta Admit, I'm not a fan of big houses...this suits my style and whats even better the way you made use of the little space in your house "the so called tower you mentioned , the chairs with storage, and the pins under the bench". Very lovely Well done
Your kids are adorable! Love the video, while the topic is mundane, it is interesting to see what living in a place is like outside of Canada. Enjoy watching your videos!
Right now my family and I are living in a starter home it is not upgraded in anyway we have no patio or a good fence line but we are thankful to have a roof over our heads🙂 anyways if we decide to stay here we would like to add a few things to the house and I've always loved an entrance like the one you have for shoes and stuff before you enter into the house. My mom is from Laos and I was raised to wear no shoes in the house. Love your videos ❤️
Did you have a hard time learning to sleep on the floor? We have back problems and I don't know how we could get up off the floor every day (or lay down at night) if we had to sleep on the floor.
No, it was an easy transition. There are different types of beds. The one we currently use is nice. The cotton ones I don't like as much. My mother-in-law uses a bed because she has bad knees, so not everyone sleeps on the floor.
Ugh thanks for showing the messy version I struggle so much with my home going on my 3rd baby now and I just can’t seem to keep it under control and I see these videos of beautiful homes so clean I just drool and am so har don myself
11:45 I literally jumped... I didn't expect him to crawl out from there. Thank the Lord I'm young, I believe I would've just had a heart attack if I wasn't.
I just find your UA-cam when browsing, What beautiful Family you have , love your UA-cam is real Family life without filter ❤️ big hugs from us in Norway .

What? Is it really illegal? I don't see how that would work in cases where families are poor and don't have enough rooms for children.
Life Where I'm From how much does it cost to buy a new house in Japan?
We did a video on it ua-cam.com/video/iGbC5j4pG9w/v-deo.html
am i the only one who got shocked/scared by shin coming out from that secret place? xD
you are not alone...
there's
someone behind you.........!
rini s omg me too😂 the jumpscare moment😂😂
rini s nope scared me too

thanks god i saw ur comment first
The "secret spot" in the closet is normally where Japanese horror films start from >.
Wooram Cho For sure 100%
That's exactly what I thought. 😂
The grudge
Hahaha that is where sadako hides
You're hilarious!
I like how honest you are about the living space not being tidy all the time!

A microwave that's also an oven... Happy thought indeed...!!! :-)
へえ、二人共はお知り合いですか?
I definitely cannot live without my micro oven.. its the best thing ever
YUTA-SAN!!!!! Fancy seeing you here XD
I seem to be the only one amazed by you and your wife sharing a very small bed together. I share a Queen size bed and it seems too small sometimes.
My boyfriend is 7 ft 1 so we need a king / California king lol
I've got a king for myself 🙈
My parents use a King size cause my father is over 6 feet and my mother is 5’5”
I myself am 6’2” would prefer a king size due to size and comfortability. I went on a band trip with class mates and shared a queen size with a classmate who is similar size of me and both of us slept on our sides cause of space restrictions.
11:44 Jesus... going to give me a heart attack. Was not expecting that.
For real now that made me jump
Max Wade🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
right? It didn't help that he was making a hissing noise either.
I jumped fro my seat after Shin popped out of that "secret place" XD
Good lord, same.. It felt like Samara coming out from nowhere..

Omg same !
wait a second wait a second... is anyone else surprised by the kids' growth???
Jesslyn Olivia Bun yasss I'm not the only one that noticed !! 😂
They grow up so fast!!! 😁😂😂
Jesslyn Olivia Bun They're kids! What did you think would happen? They'd turn into a tentacle monster and destroy the city?
Yup!
Girl especially
Great video Greg! Really relaxing and fun to watch ^^
Thanks Dogen!

I agree 100 %. Hopefully going back next summer.
i love aiko's hair!
Beautifully furnished and kept.. What a lovely family you people are.. 👨👩👧👦 😃

I REALLY LOVE THE BOND OF YOUR FAMILY like ours😅👍💕
The children are so cute and well mannered. Cudoes to the parents for a job really well done.
aiko is getting so big! congrats on the blessed life you are living.
Even though he crawled out really slow I jumped a bit when Shin came out of the secret place haha.
Interesting that you have your living room and ktichen on the second floor. In most western houses they are on the first floor.
There is a car port, so the first floor space is smaller.
I'm still slowly watching all your vids. I'm using them as kind of a "living in Japan Boot Camp" because you show the reality of what living in Japan is really like. Your vids are priceless when/if my efforts to move to Japan pay off.

We actually bought a year ago :-)
I notice that it is not the same one (design-wise) that you made a video (with John). I am wondering about the price. Is it higher or lower than that one?
The house highlights one thing the most . The family is united happy n close to each other ❤ . Very convenient stuff everywhere
Makes me want to go live over there in Japan.
this house is IDENTICAL to what the new houses in Melbourne, Aus look like!!

Shin actually scared me At the end 😂
When I was a child, I had the sudden urge/curiosity to see the inside of various homes wherever I go. Your videos especially the Tokyo neighborhood satisfied my itch for that!

Life Where I'm From ah that makes more sense now! I'm in the UK where most homes have central heating installed. though to save energy and money, i sometimes use a small heater and move all my work and entertainment to one room. thanks for your reply!
Isn't minimalism a cultural thing in Japan?
The duality of your furniture is immensely satisfying
am I the only one who was not scared by shin at the end of the video cuz I had already read the comments?😂😂
seeing aiko and your brother grow up is amazing.. like miss my little family..
hope u all happy forever and god bless u
My heart, I was so startled when shin came out
I appreciate that pretty much all of the house is just functional. No need for frills or extra huge rooms to wonder how to decorate.
can you do more of this? binge watching this since it was uploaded, i find it enjoyable watching house tour💚
I love how organised, clean and minimalistic japanese homes are! goals!
i love how simple yet elegant the house looks👌🏽 and Aiko dear, love the new hair style😍
It is very nice to learned how other people live in other parts of the world. Thank you for your videos! Hello from Texas!

After watching a lot of home tours it is interesting how bathrooms and kitchens are very utilitarian.

Gang gang
The beds are so different, honestly I would have a hard time sleeping on a Japanese style bed. We don't recycle-- here in our small town there are no facilities. I really admire Japan for their extensive recycling. Great video!
man, never thought there is jump scare in the end!!!!
wow this is the most minimalistic childrens room ive ever seen :D and yet i admire the tidiness and order of everything
Do you have an episode on your earthquake bag? :)
in action : D
We'll be doing one!
nienoblagam woah!! thats would be a great idea! :D
I was going to ask the same thing! :)
+Life Where I'm From Wonderful! And greetings from Seattle. Love your videos with your kids.
This and Life Where I'm From X are the best channels I have ever seen on youtube. Thank you so much for making these videos.
Greg I always thought you were tall, but maybe that's because you're next to the kids all the time 😄
I love Greg videos because he’s such a dad lol geeking out about storage throughout the video
automatic light? nah, i don't buy it. it must be shintaro hiding behind the door again (and turning the lights on and off) just like the last home tour.
Love Japanese design and technology. Homes are very people friendly. Thanks for showing us the secret space!
I WANTED AIKO-CHAN TO SHOW US AROUND!!!!😣😔I guess Greg will have to do...he's pretty funny but Aiko-chan is adorable...
I do like the compartment under the bathroom for maintenance, and the Japanese style bathrooms w the fan and washer, dryer combo
I've noticed that in your home and in Japanese films etc the houses usually have white walls, is it really uncommon to have different colours?
The Japanese like minimalist themed stuff. Clean and neat-looking.
I am sooo jealous by how inovative Japanese kitchens are! I really want one in my house!!
2:05 the white thing we call it "tabo" in the Philippines. I thought we were the only country using it.😂
Wow the house is so cozy nice comfortable. I like how the technology in Japanese houses are so high tech.
Is the second secret place where you hide the kids when they misbehave? ;)
Considering Shin enjoyed hiding in there, I don't know if it would work.
I love practical stuff and this video gave me so much ideas
not gonna lie, i kinda jumped abit when shin popped up from that floor storage thing
my favorite room was the bathroom, thank you for sharing your home with us, I shared a bed room with my sisters until I was 15 it was great
Thanks for the video. With so many rooms why not give the children their own bedroom? I'm amazed how different the cultures are across the world. Where's wifey? I'd love to see her.
Right? They have 2 rooms for storage and 1 for both kids? They are growing and they will probably need some privacy.
Also, where does his wife sleeps?
I think the desk would be better in the spare room. Nicer for your spouse to just have the room as a bedroom? Since you have the space. Kid’s room should swap and would make a better parent’s room.
He scared me at the end. I jumped lol 😂

My brother is 6.5 feet tall (from Germany) and lives in Japan now and he says everything is fine, just in some hostels he has problems with the beds...
el ka that's good to hear! My son is also very tall so I wondered
I love the kitchen storage unit. Good purchase. I would love having something like that in my office.
i really really should stop watching these type of videos, it's making me wanna go to japan more and more...arhhhhhhh...
Now I get why the last few videos was about homes. It looks really good.
With an extra room in the house, why not let the kids sleep in separate rooms? Also, explain or show us the earthquake bag, please.
Dude I don't understand this either. That's not fair. A bit and a girl shouldn't have to share a room when there are plenty rooms......

I love the "tower" in the kitchen! I think I need one...
Who else jumped when shin got out of the 'secret place'?
How exciting and wonderful for you and your family to be able to own one of these new, beautiful, modern Japanese houses! The bonus for me would be: NO YARDWORK!! Yay!!! Congratulations Greg and Family!
you know what i noticed you and your daughter have tha same speech pattern its so alike
I literally jumped when he came out from the basement at the end. Beautiful home!
I'm pretty sure when Aiko grows a bit more she'll want to move to the spare room downstairs 😭 Teen girls are too shy to share a room with the younger brother
ara ara
What...i stayed with my sister till i was 16 and she was 20
@@bkshr1172 A friend of mine is 30 and shares the same room as his sister who's 32. Housing is just too expensive man
Gotta Admit, I'm not a fan of big houses...this suits my style and whats even better the way you made use of the little space in your house "the so called tower you mentioned , the chairs with storage, and the pins under the bench". Very lovely
Well done
Aiko and Shin are so big now, I feel emotional now....
Your kids are adorable! Love the video, while the topic is mundane, it is interesting to see what living in a place is like outside of Canada. Enjoy watching your videos!
Nice! I would love to see a video of you guys ordering pizza... they seem to have crazy/amazing flavor combinations in Japan! :)
Congratulations on buying a new house. It is lovely, thank you for sharing.
Your boy is getting more handsome as he grows.
Thank you for responding.
Thank you for the fantastic tour Greg. Another brilliant video!
I got a fright seeing Shin rise from the secret hiding spot #2. I wasn't expecting that at all! Haha, thanks for the chuckle.
Thank the Lord I'm young, I believe I would've just had a heart attack if I wasn't.
ugh he stepped into the bathroom i saw that tub and i was instantly relaxed😌 looks so comfy

Do you have a link for those chairs?
If you don’t get a reply, you could do a search for “chairs with storage” and something should come up, good luck
