Bro I just listened though the first album. Really great work and I love all genres + jungle, dnb and breaks - was around for the 90s era and your stuff stands up
I’m all for new genres, but it feels useless to pull genre names out of the ether and apply them to music that didn’t need that kind of labeling. Like the sonic, compositional, and aesthetic similarities Vaporbreaks shares with Atmos. DnB and Liquid DnB is 1:1.
I was just having a conversation about this the other day - I love these records, how they exist in and play with context, and grow from there. Some of those featured in this video are in my vinyl cabinet, and some are totally new to me - thanks for sharing the goods!
I think the term vapourbreaks does reflect the sound. I usually liked terms like low-poly to describe this take on dnb/ambient/house sounds. I think it's important to remember that this is a proper homage to 90s DNB and specifically the ambient/Intelligent/funk dnb (which is quite different from liquid) from artists like nookie, Blu mar ten and LTJ bukem. With the seminial records like the Earth compilations and the artificial intelligence ones - and the demoscene. Also machine girl's music was always a very interesting take on combining vapourwave with digital hardcore, footwork and breaks.
I absolutely love the resurgence of the 90s in music and the aesthetic that comes with. My homie made a beat challenge for atmospheric dnb and once I watched a few tutorials and made a couple tracks I fell in love with making music again.
Thanks for the feature mate! Awesome video… Honoured to see the ‘INNERSENSE’ album get a heavy mention, plus the Rose Room LP. (All these albums are dope tho) Whilst some people make the assumption that it’s “just jungle” I think that often misses the point that Vaporwave is all about the way you repackage your nostalgia of choice. For INNERSENSE the idea was that this was a lost cassette from an old tape pack recorded at a rave in 1994. The music itself is a mixture of old jungle and hardcore sub-genres, but the point of it is to send people on a journey to a particularly British cultural space. (Rather than leaning into American or Japanese influences) This wider style - whether you call it VaporBreaks, PS1 Jungle or VaporRave - is a really exciting development in the scene in my opinion. It transfers really well to the live scene in particular and brings something new to the table. Another notable mention you missed was BBRAINZ ‘Jungle2000’ which everyone should check out if they love these tunes… Keep up the great work! Okkkkkkkk let’s go!
Killer video dude! Vaporbreaks is exploding right now, and I’m all about it! I got an Innersense tape from Enzo back at Electronicon 1, and 3peacesweetz has since become one of my favorite groups in the scene.
I can remember giving it to you! What a great event that was too… I get nostalgic about that trip all the time. I think we gave 20 copies or so out to people that day
Dude awesome video, im so glad someone else is picking up on the Vaporbreaks trend- its been refreshing for the scene, whether the breaks are sped up or slowed down!
Killing it brother! This is gonna get me on a deep dive into this awesome lil subgenre, and I'm excited to hear how it all sounds! Also, top tier editing my dude!!!
HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend listening to Alicks - SOJUDA vol 1 - 3. Perfectly combines jungle, atmospheric, idm with plenty of video game inspiration. Absolutely nuts that these three albums were just dumps of unfinished songs/songs that never made an album. By far my favorite artist of any genre
Pretty good video. In terms of other artists that deserve some recognition, I think Bakground is definitely one of the main ones. His "Fantasies EP" from 2017 is the first project I was exposed to that could probably be considered Vaporbreaks, and his "BUMPS 'N' BREAKS" album is an even better example of the style. Another album I think deserves some recognition is "RECORD BREAKING BEATS" by Heavy System, Inc., released 2018. Definitely more Vaporave than Vaporbreaks, since it's more influenced by Breakbeat Hardcore than Jungle/DnB, but it's a great album imo and one that seems to have flown under the radar for the most part.
I’ll have to check some of your recommendations out. I love pizza hotline and his work is very good. I am a huge fan of the genre I hope that it grows even more I want MORE OF THIS SHIT!!!, particularly Y2K drum and Bass. But I feel like vaporbreak isn’t what it should be called I feel like it should be called low poly vapor but that’s just me😏.
I don’t think it’s a coincidence that vaporbreaks is happening at the same time that atmospheric breakcore has gotten big. There’s something about the combination of sped up break beats and lush, slightly lo-fi pads that speaks to this moment in culture.
@@spudmcqueenit isn’t, this has a different sound to 90s atmospheric dnb, it wouldn’t make sense to rope them together when they don’t sound the same, vaporbreaks place more emphasis on synths and electronic instrumentals and are more influenced by electronic music while a lot of 90s atmospheric dnb is influenced by jazz and ambient music
Actually, it's neither vaporbreak nor ambient jungle it’s more along the lines of future garage with some microfunk elements. However I wont be picky let’s just call it vaporbreak. 😊
Playstation is a 32 bit system... not like the weak colorless Sega Genesis mate... do not insult the PS-X !!! If you can buy a crayola box with 1 pencil for each color of your console you are a weak console = SEGA genesis is literally that limted in color palette. SNES torched it like a kid vs Picasso in "copy the master painting" day at art school.
thanks for the feature and the nice words!

Pizza Hotline in the comments, double hell yeah
Brooo!!! I love your tunes so much! Even though we mostly produce Neuro (as CPTL PNSHMNT) We would love to collab with you one day! Big love!
Pizza hotline: * hides after that comment *
The Level Select album RULES
the more names we make up for jungle/dnb the muddier the waters get
Oh no not "the waters" won't anyone think about "the waters"???
@@spleen1234567 the water cauldron? i thought they closed that place down

I love all the shout-outs to all these awesome guys I listen to that I would of never otherwise ever heard if it wasn't for UA-cam

RETURN OF THE KING! Thank you for the shout-out, and of course for the amazing breakdown of this new leaf within the vapor-scene!

awesome video. thank you for broadening my tastes!
Been awhile lol love Vaporbreaks music glad to see your still making content
Loved this as a musician trying to better understand what makes these genres what they are and how to be creative
I always walk away with sick recommendations from your vids. Keep it up!

VapourBreaks aptly describes the sound 💙
My living room system loves you (and I assume my neighbors do to) xD
Excellent video and breakdown with some awesome recommendations. gonna check them out today!
Also, Dan Mason has a cool side project for PS1-inspired drum n bass that came out last year.
Such a cool new sound developing in the scene! Great video mate! ❤
Yessss! Fantastic video! Thank you for the sweet sweet hit of nostalgia!
Welcome back king!

make a video about the twilight subgenre
Okay! It's mid 90s tunes again
I mean its Playstation jungle but ok. I guess vapor breaks is more inclusive.
im gonna be honest i thought the video had 900k views not 900
We're just gonna have to 895,000 times between us to make things right
Vapor breaks? It's AMBIENT JUNGLE. 🤦
Yeah I don't get this attempt at making a new "subgenre". It's literally just atmospheric/ambient jungle.

Vaporbreaks? It's just ambient jungle.

There’s nothing ‘ambient’ about 3PeaceSweetz 😂
its just jungle
