For the first time in all these years somebody finally told me how to do yoko geri keage in details: going as far as 3/4 and then eventually the hip rotating, according to the move shown slowly. For twelve years I've always asked myself, "Is this keage I'm doing?". I was never sure. I do kekomi, mawashi geri, mae geri, ushiro geri, and for me they all have very clear contours. But keage was always blurred. Now I've finally learnt it. I can't believe it! Thank you very very much, sensei! You are great!
Spot on John. This video is actually so good that I come back from time to time to watch it all over again. It's actually so good that I feel I should mail tuition fees to HDKI
Yoko geri keage has been the bane of my existence through all of my training. My mistake has always been non-engagement of the hip, and so the sokuto ends up at an angle. This video really helps. This kick is one that seems simple, but, for me, is anything but.
Thanks for this video....i struggle with the mechanics of the side snap kick. Trying to get my body to figure how to deliver the kick without it turning into some weird mae geri. This has helped a lot.
This has always been a problem for me. One teacher tells me to snap with foot parallel but not too rotate the foot on the floor. Without doing so I can’t get the hip involved plus it hurts my knee. I have seen picks of Funakoshi doing this and even do his foot on the ground does not move . Also in the pictures of his book karate jutsu it looks like the fingers side of the foot is somewhat higher than the rest. I have also heard to turn the supporting foot no matter what as it happens naturally with hip rotation. I basically do this all sorts of ways for each teacher but it has gotten difficult to figure which is the way to do it at least for shotokan.
This guy is one of the few on the internet teaching yoko geri keage correctly.. He’s striking with the heel .. Not the knife edge of the smallest metatarsal in the foot… you break your foot doing that
Oss, Sensei!! Nice video! Yoko geri keage is my biggest struggle in karate. But... I have a question 😅 As you rotate the hip to deliver the yoko geri, doesn't it become a kekomi? In keage, I do understand that we raise out legs differently from kekomi but, as I rotate my hip, the feel of transfering energy is like the same. More like a tsuki and less like a uraken, you know 😅
Cadu Melo I know what you mean... I think I explained that when I taught three class, so let me see if I can find that clip... But, basically, the hip use for kekomi and keage is the same. The way we project our limb is different; with keage the joint leads and at some point stops and projects the limb out. Of course, with kekomi the joint thrusts the limb out :-)
Scott Langley Thanks for answering, for the explanation and patience, Sensei. I think I got what you mean! Now it's time to learn it physically, by practicing from zero hahaha Thanks again, Sensei!!
I really appreciate Sensei Langley’s accessible ways of teaching! Osh!
Another quality video on karate technique from Scott. Thank you Sir.

This doesn't mean that this is correct

Finally someone have explained this in a good way. Thank you so much!
...now I'm off to change my Yoko Geri Keage to something working :D
Nice! It's exact the same way that I'm performing that kick! Ossu! You vids are really realistic and useful! Keep up that work!

Good stuff.
Sensi what grading do you need this for ?
What grading?
Most grading syllabus have yoko geri keage as the 2nd or 3rd grading (8th or 7th kyu) :-)
What a great video !!

He was my sensei.
