  • Do you want more windfarms?
The government is planning to build enough to power 20 million homes, on seabeds owned by the Crown.
Is that the answer to making Brits more energy independent?

What's the rason we haven't built lots of Nuculer plants? The twin plants at Hinckley C are 6 years late and the cost has gone up to 30 billion. Lets not keep saying how nuclear energy is cheaper. Once built it's cheap (but not as cheap as wind), but the cost to build is astronomical.

Can we stop ascribing the Crown Estates to Royal Family ownership! It is not owned by them in the same way that Crown Land in New Zealand and Canada is not. The Royal family may receive some income from the Crown Estate but it is more appropriate to call it owned by you and me with profits and fees received being handed over to the Treasury. Stop this fudge!

So we build wind farms all around the coast and they supply a decent proportion of our energy and we become heavily reliant on it. Imagine a scenario where a hostile nation decides to take out the supply by destroying either the turbines or the cabling. No people would be killed but the outcome would be devastating and we would powerless to do anything about it. It’s not in any way inconceivable as somewhat naive to dismiss as we seem to have plenty of rather powerful enemies 🤔

Can you get someone on who knows what they are talking about?. 20m homes? …only when it is backed up by gas. No one will pay for unbacked up wind power because we all want continuous power. Batteries will never get cheaper. There is nowhere in the world where electricity from wind is cheaper. There is not enough copper being mined or will be mined to achieve the UKs wind plans.

    • @teem5642

They do exist but aren't able to keep up with current demand in the UK, so hence no battery storage currently capable of meeting the megawatts demanded daily. Currently on The grid, wind and sea only facilitate supporting the current infrastructure of fossil and not fully working independently

@@keirmitchell5560 I'm aware of that we have the same issue in N.Ireland as well; we need to speed up the infrastructure which is doable - it's a pollical will problem. Batteries are even more essential, though to mitigate too much supply

@@teem5642 Yes true but she was actively promoting a myth here; batteries can be scalable to meet the demand it just requires pollical will there is also gravity pumped wells that UK should be taking advantage as well if we over supply once we reach peak supply of renewables

These two don't know what they are talking about. There are no oil powered thermal stations in the UK.There is only one coal powered station left in the UK and that is due to close next month. Gas thermal power stations do balance the intermittency of wind turbines and solar PV. But more wind turbines geographically dispersed will increase wind power output and reduce the use of gas. Renewable energy storage is key though. Lithium-Ion and now Sodium-Ion batteries can store energy to meet peak demand and balance the grid, as does pumped hydro storage. Cryogenically stored air is the most promising emerging storage technology There is a test plant in Manchester and 2 production plants are being built in the NE.
