This track with "We All Fall In Love Sometimes" tears me up every time. The lyrics "That's treasure children always seek to find...and just like us, you must have had a once upon a time" are especially powerful. It gets you to thinking, WTH ever happened to MY once upon a time, because life sure didn't turn out the way I dreamed. 😔 Decades after this was released, it still makes an impact. This whole album is phenomenal, deserves all the praise it's ever gotten. ❤
Graduated in '76... This song was in our school yearbook....so fitting and timeless...makes me miss my youth and those innocent years....Elton's music has been such a huge part of me....glad to hear others feel the same.....hope his music is in heaven or the other side....or a once upon a time..............
10 years ago my son completed suicide at the age of 29. This song always reminds me of him. I have a picture of the two of us when he was 2, matted and framed with the quote - There's treasure children always seek to find, and just like us you must have had a Once Upon a Time. Sorry for your loss.💔
My all-time favorite Elton's song - awesome slow ballad which grows powerfully louder and gets both poignant and spellbinding. Te final coda sends me shivers down my spine still - what a beauty! Lamenting vocals at the end are just splendid. Tremendous track
This may be Elton (and Bernie')s finest song, and that's out of so many tremendous contenders. From this album Someone Saved my life Tonight is another absolute classic that should be better known. Well, the album as a whole is utterly magnificent, a real grower. However many thousands of times i have listened over the years, i love it as much as ever.
why are you glad they didn't play it on the radio? You think someone will listen kiki dee and elton john on the radio or mtv and then be interested in whether he has written anything else and goes to buy albums?
Randy Taylor I know what you mean on the top ten. They would have over-played it and it would have lost something. The ONLY problem I have with this song is that it’s too short.
Hey, bud... I've got a terminal disease...they say less than 5 years...this song is already on my list of a few songs that I want played at my memorial service
Charles Deason I’m so sorry you are ill. You’ve picked out an awesome song to be played for you. Please know that someone in Indiana is praying for you and sending love your way.
I'm 55 and only heard a snippet of this song at the end of the last episode of the first season of the marvelous Mrs Maisel. Elton John fan since I was 10... How did I never hear this beautiful song until this evening?
The whole album was an autobiographical journey, that took us through Reg's & Bernie's life and struggles, so when we finally get to "Curtains" we have almost reached the end of the story, so yes, listening to it on its own, doesn't give the listener the advantage of knowing how we arrived here. The best album he ever made.
I listened to this album all winter long in 75 and it took me to a better place. The album is a masterpiece and i still love it just as much 42 years on. Thank you Elton for the joy you have given me for 45 years. Your music communicates with my soul.
For me, Curtains is one of the most emotional and sorrowful songs I've known. It brings me back to childhood passion for girls and living, and reminds me of losses and suffering experienced later in life. It was put together so incredibly well.
Me too. Reminds me of my father who passed away in 2008. He was my scarecrow. He passed all of his knowledge along to me, and he was my favorite person in the world, other than my two sons. Now I'm going to cry!!!!! He would have loved these words.
yes, I think of my son, who was killed in 2016 at the age of 29. I mourn what he missed, and not seeing his daughter grow up. But I listen to this song every day, the release is nice on some days
I feel a comfort now at 63,I miss my Mom and Dad every day I wish missing my Mom and Dad would go away.I hope not.I find the song "Curtains" a master piece.
Some elements of intense sadness that lingers in this album....at the time this record was made I magineHe was going g through some thing that caused lots of alienation.
Russell Jordan yeah! That's a tough one Russell, that feeling will never go! In fact it's something that had haunted me in my mid-20s the 30s thinking what will I be like when Mom and Dad pass?
sorry man. this is part of being human. missing people is how we deal with our own passing and developing empathy. I feel the hole in my heart every day too.
I first heard this song around 4 years ago. I felt such a connection to it, as if id heard it when i was young. I sent it to my mum who said she'd never heard of it at all. Its amazing how music can effect you in so many different ways. I suppose its down to how much passion and enthusiasm the artist puts into the song
Probably the best song on this album, which I personally, consider his best ever. I know 'Yellow Brick Road'' was critically acclaimed and did have ''Candle'' on it but this album was consistently better. ''Bitter Fingers'', ''Better off Dead'' and ''We All Fall In Love Sometimes'' are probably his best and Bernie's most lyrically incisive of all time. Never bettered in my opinion. Oh halcyon days!!
Absolutely, I guess because the lyrics were all so personal and sort of autobiographical, about their friendship, partnership...their brotherhood..Every song is a real treasure on this one, their best..
When he sings, 'such childish words for you' I used to think it was Taupin writing to a lover, but now I am pretty sure he means we, his listeners and fans who were there from 'Your Song' onwards. That's why when he sings 'just like us' (referring to he and Elton) he means that we - everyone listening - must have had a 'once upon a time'. Magical.
So glad to hear others enjoy this as much as I have over the years. Seems nobody I've ever met even remotely knows how beautiful this record has always been, how much it satisfies a lonely soul . . .
I'm rewatching the first season of *The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel* and thoroughly enjoying the music they used. At the end of episode 8, they used this beloved song over the ending credits. It took only the first couple words for me to be singing along, in awe that in 2017, they had the brilliance to place this John/Taupin masterpiece in their wonderful show. I was an adolescent when this album came out, and this was my favorite song on it. It filled me with melancholy then (even though I had no idea what that was), and the instant I heard it on TV, that sensation washed over me again. Such lovely yearning!
They used his music, "Susie" from Honky Chateau and "Love Song" from Tumbleweed Connection in Season 5 episode 6 which is available on Amazon prime for streaming (as of 1/17/2024) too I believe. They also used Jim Croce's "Time in a Bottle" (great artist) in the same episode. I've seen a few episodes of it to check out what music they used. They must like Elton John's music.
Captain Fantastic is a monumental piece of work. Someone Saved My Life Tonight and Curtains are two of the most beautiful songs... Both slow anthems about redemption - especially the latter. Knowing he and Taupin wrote such masterpieces, Elton will go to his grave knowing they left mankind a gift for the ages...
I held a dandelion who said the time had comeTo leave upon the wind, not to returnWhen summer burned the earth again.Such brilliant writing, and the music is perfect.
@thecoolestdad I was born in 1957 and I agree with you on your view of the 60's and 70's and what happened in the 90's. I have my doubts that the music will get better again. I think we were both very fortunate to have experienced the best music of all time in the 60's, 70's and 80's.
My favorite Elton John song of all time. This is the song I listen to when I want to take my mind back to being 17 in 1975. I spend a lot of time that summer rocking out to this with my huge headphones. Still sounds just as moving and beautiful today as it sounded then. Even more so, actually. Lum de dum day. = )
ldchappell1 I agree,if you are not an Elton John fan,put on a good pair of headphones, turn the lights down low,you should be a fan when the Lum De Lums are over with.
@@partslig123 The official lyrics for "Scarecrow" Curtains, say he is singing, Lovely, Lovely, Lady. I was surprised, I always thought it was Lum De Lum as well. I still will. I used to Dance slow with a gal the entire two songs and be sweating terribly by the end but loving it.
34 years have past, and I still get goosebumps. I've listened to a lot of music and a lot of albums during my 50 years, but none as often as I've played Captain Fantastic from beginning to end. "but that's okay, there's treasure children always seem to find"
I was 12 when this came out, and it hit me right between the eyes. I have NEVER been able to make it through the whole song without crying, and I can't explain that.
Love this amazing album. We all fall in love sometimes/curtains are probably best two songs flowing from one into another in the whole history of modern music.
If I was forced to choose, my favorite Elton song this would be the one! And no force necessary on my favorite Elton album! Could not have had the absolute perfection of this album, this masterpiece, end any better! Thank you so much Mr Captain Fantastic and Mr Brown Dirt Cowboy for giving me a lifetime of beauty, true love and happiness from your music
The meat of the song is only 3 minutes long, but that killer three-minute ending is what you will never find on today's songs. It's a great round, too. Lum-de-lum-de-day-oh!
I found this song 5 years ago now ...i'm 48 yrs old and will never know why i never found it before ...simply one of the most amazing songs i've ever heard....it has a way of opening up my spirituality every time i hear it ........i guess when i was a kid i never came outside The Doors.......another is Tenderness by Steppenwolf if you've never heard this one check it out...
For some reason this song tears at my heart, I have listened to it so many times since the album was released in '75 and it still affects me., And, I am not sure of its meaning. Nostalgia?
Wow, I still remember all of the words. My record collection in the mid 1970s eventually consisted of 3 Elton John records - which I played on my parent's portable "stereophonic" tube record player. I had that poster up in my room and still have the album and the poster stashed away. This was always my favourite EJ album and as a kid this song was one of the most beautiful I'd heard. Still is. I remember wanting glasses even though my eyes were perfect. My mother forced piano on me (which I'm thankful for) and all I did was learn Elton John's music. I didn't care about any other music at that point. He was my hero. I remember that he would have multiple songs in the top 10 on the local AM radio stations. I would sign out a cassette recorder from our elementary school library and try to record the songs off the radio. All of his early stuff is amazing. Of course, I soon moved on to Super Tramp and bought those on 8 track so that my brother and I could listen to them over my dad's van stereo when he came home from work! It was a step up from the record player!
to me.. This is one of the most mesmerizing albums he did.. one of my favorites for sure.... the album cover always captivated me.. such sweet music inside and such creepiness on the out. ..
The late Gus Dudgeon was such an overlooked, genius producer. His EJ productions from the 1970's were such a perfect marriage of talents, and keep in mind that Elton took very little time in the studio, constantly touring, leaving Mr. Dudgeon to produce the records.
Amo todas do Elton, mas, Curtains me faz voltar a 1975 e me sintir como se ainda tivesse 13 anos...descobrindo o rock...descobrindo Elton John e saber que iria amar este cara por todos os dias da minha vida!
"I held a dandelion that said the time had come to leave upon the wind, not to return, when summer burnt the Earth again....! Beneath these branches, I once wrote such childish words for you. But that's OK, there's treasures children always seek to find. And just like us, you must have had a Once Upon a Time...!!!
Elton John will be in Springfield Mo, tomarow March 19th 2011 and this will be the last chance to ever get to see him, and my pay check diden`t come to day and I don` have any charge cards after anything in my life I want is to have seen him him at his best singing, It is not fun being poor. Thank you anyway Elton for bringing so much joy in my life even if it was just with Lp records VHS tapes and CDs it made me happy just the same God Bless you sign one of you true Fans.
i was introduced to elton john in 1971 i was 6. my music teacher mrs. lamb played the album good bye yellow brick road. i remember vividly she kept saying remember this, this is the true essence of music that the singer and writer would go very very far. if it wasn't for her i wouldn't have been turned on to elton john as my parents listened to country. i am forever grateful to her i couldn't have had a better teacher she new an icon when she seen it. and i have been hooked to it every sence.
I cried to this when I was 16 - discovered it in the mid-late 80's - and the most heart wrenching of all EJ's songs (along with Tonight). I did a lot of crying. Thanks for the music EJ!
Cultivate the freshest flower, this garden ever grew Beneath these branches--- I once wrote such childish words for You. But that's okay! There's treasure children always seek to find ...And just like us... You must have had.... A Once-a-Upon-a-Time------------ and thank you Bernie
I have wrote many childish lines beneath many trees in my life Daisy these beautiful lyrics and mesmerising melodies remind me of years gone by I just wish the youth of today would feel the same we we used to .x
This song has a meaning that is at once a claim, a sadness and a past that you wish to face once again, especially when you need to feel that same sadness that happened, perhaps such a long ago, time and again……..
Nicely said. Since the album was autobiographical, I took the 'garden' to be their work together, the flowers to be the best songs they ever wrote, the best times they had together. So I think their Once Upon a Time was not just one person or several, but their whole lives and times together.
Daisy Rothschild And I still listen to the whole album, never tiring and the years pass by. I feel this was their best and it still outweighs all the thereafter.....
LOVE THE WHOLE ALBUM !!... Remember buying this Vinyl .... which was as Dramatic as the music. It opened up like a book , complete with a poster similar to the picture above. It also contained a mini booklet with all the words to the songs. EJ & Bernie you are True Legends with the gift you gave us !! ..... Thank You so much "
I used to know this old scarecrow He was my song My joy and sorrow Cast alone between the furrows Of a field no longer sown by anyone I held a dandelion That said the time had come To leave upon the wind Not to return When summer burned the earth again Cultivate the freshest flower This garden ever grew Beneath these branches I once wrote Such childish words for you But that's okay There's treasure children always seek to find And just like us You must have had A once-a-upon-a-time
This song speaks to me and at the same time embraces me....he's my best friend who holds me tight and kisses me on the cheek and tells me everything will be alright when nobody is there. Lovely song! Thank you Bernie and thank you Elton !
I know you wrote this comment 2 years ago but, this entire album is incredible. And Curtains is the perfect song to be last. I agree with you 100 percent.
right, Bernie excelled himself (I held a dandelion that said the time had come to leave upon the wind, not to return when summer burned the earth again..), this song is utterly magical, romantic, nostalgic, beautiful, powerful, magnificent, unsurpassed
I'd meet up w/friends, listen to this song on repeat over & over while checking out the LP cover until I got straight faced. This LP has soo many roads, which are not always the same. Love his music...🎼
Like many deep feeling adolescent boys when this album came out, this song in particular was like a musical mirror on our hearts. I'd just graduated from high school and the girl I'd been in love with for most of my life had broken up with me. I'd joined the Marines and was shaking the dust off my sleepy southern town. She was heading to the university. The "time had come to leave upon the wind, never to return" ... "And just like us, you must have had ... a once upon a time" ... oh my god ... it just ripped the heart out of my chest. The sad and beautiful closing of one chapter of life ... to transition to the next. Does that ever happen without pain and struggle? Thank you Bernie and Elton.
I had just come back from Thailand as this was being released and the album struck me as a masterpiece but I can remember hearing "Curtains" for the first time. I was stunned and must have sat through it several times. I clearly remember this....
This was the first album I ever bought, too! This song is GORGEOUS! Alice in chains has a cover on here of this song as well - very cool! I don't recall if it ever got airplay on the radio, but it is my favorite EJ ever.
This song is brilliant. I wish the last few minutes would just keep repeating. Somehow if the song was stretched out to 15 minutes or something. Like a psychedelic trip.
Thie song will always remind me of a particular summer with my mother back in the 1970s. I haven't heard it for many years. Now I have found it again. It's wonderful.
Reminds me of a trip me and Mom made to New Orleans...I played this repeatedly, because I thought it was the only thing I had that she could stand...she thought this was one of the most beautiful songs ever...RIP mom...I love you forever
One of his most underrated and underplayed songs.
This track with "We All Fall In Love Sometimes" tears me up every time. Class of 76 as well miss those beautiful days with all their awesome music the days of vinyl and roses.
'76 here as well. I saw him twice in concert back in the day. We were fortunate to grow up with incredible music and experiences. ❤
Class of 76 here too and also my favourite Elton song. I'm actually thinking, as I get older, that it would be the most fitting funeral song.
'78. Same.
This is my absolute favorite Elton John album....so many memories.
The first album to hit #1 before it's release!
The saddest and most beautiful song- it was played at my Mothers funeral and I can’t listen to it without crying so hard ❤️
❤ I’m so sorry I do the same over losing my dad
10 years ago my son completed suicide at the age of 29. This song always reminds me of him. I have a picture of the two of us when he was 2, matted and framed with the quote - There's treasure children always seek to find, and just like us you must have had a Once Upon a Time.
Sorry for your loss.💔
What a beautiful way to remember your son. So very sorry you had to say goodbye so young ❤️

Such a beautiful song long live Elton John
Good God, what amazing lyrics. And the music too. Incredible ending to this album, but the whole thing is great.
For some reason this song tears at my heart, I have listened to it so many times since the album was released in '75 and it still affects me., And, I am not sure of its meaning. Nostalgia?

and putting away childish things, if you will.
Personal loss of all variety. And the beautiful memory, feelings and longings associated with that loss.
Same here. My eyes well up every time I hear this. Absolute blisstacy!
"You must have had a once upon a time…" (We all stood on the brink of a dream once.)
+Rick Kernell Me too, theres just something about it from the first time I heard it, such emotion
John Walker Gus was incredible. These albums were great for many reasons but I can't imagine they would have been possible without his contributions.
Readeez Sadly Gus and His Wife were killed in a car crash.
When did he die?? OMG, I find out something new about this crew everyday!!!
Nigel is tearing it up on this one!
This song very much sounds like the ending song to a film...I can't help but imagine credits rolling and people filing out of the theatre.
Excellent.Lyrics,music,both excellent!
Cranked up through my Pioneer headphones. By the end, I'm feelin' pretty stoned without taking anything.
had to replace this album 3 times now, as i wear them out ! :-] simply fantastic ...
Been there mate.
i was introduced to elton john in 1971 i was 6. my music teacher mrs. lamb played the album good bye yellow brick road. i remember vividly she kept saying remember this, this is the true essence of music that the singer and writer would go very very far. if it wasn't for her i wouldn't have been turned on to elton john as my parents listened to country. i am forever grateful to her i couldn't have had a better teacher she new an icon when she seen it. and i have been hooked to it every sence.
I cried to this when I was 16 - discovered it in the mid-late 80's - and the most heart wrenching of all EJ's songs (along with Tonight). I did a lot of crying. Thanks for the music EJ!
+VK kasvou When a songwriter writes a song that will make you cry then it's a masterpiece..
Cultivate the freshest flower, this garden ever grew
Beneath these branches--- I once wrote such childish words for You.
But that's okay! There's treasure children always seek to find
...And just like us... You must have had.... A Once-a-Upon-a-Time------------
and thank you Bernie
+Daisy Rothschild We all must have had a once upon a time..Right?
Daisy Rothschild
And I still listen to the whole album, never tiring and the years pass by.
EJ & Bernie you are True Legends with the gift you gave us !! ..... Thank You so much "
Jules you said it, filled with books and posters, my sister had them all over her wall
I did buy this vinyl. The best I ever had - a piece of Elton's art.
I was 14, since 1975 until today for me the best ever
I used to know this old scarecrow
He was my song
My joy and sorrow
Cast alone between the furrows
Of a field no longer sown by anyone
I held a dandelion
That said the time had come
To leave upon the wind
Not to return
When summer burned the earth again
Cultivate the freshest flower
This garden ever grew
Beneath these branches
I once wrote
Such childish words for you
But that's okay
There's treasure children always seek to find
And just like us
You must have had
A once-a-upon-a-time
Love the lonely Scarecrow. at the end (repeated)
@@hunga224 Do you have any idea how long I've been trying to figure out what that last repeated line is??? About 30 years. Bless your heart, dear sir.
Can;t count the amount of times I listened and sang along with this song..Thanks for the memories!
do you know what he is saying for the last 90 seconds... drives me nuts.
This song speaks to me and at the same time embraces me....he's my best friend who holds me tight and kisses me on the cheek and tells me everything will be alright when nobody is there. Lovely song! Thank you Bernie and thank you Elton !
I hadn't heard this song in many years.
You can't truly get to "Curtains" unless you listen to the rest of the album first. It's what kids miss today through no fault of their own.
I know you wrote this comment 2 years ago but, this entire album is incredible. And Curtains is the perfect song to be last. I agree with you 100 percent.
One of the most underrated concept albums.
Absolutely! It needs to be listened to from start to finish.
Scott, A very astute statement. Thank you for it...
Opening new doors...absolutely among the best bass parts in history.
Can't help but getting teary-eyed Everytime I hear this masterpiece!!!
and just like us.... you must have had... a, once, upon, a... time.....
Too perfect.
right, Bernie excelled himself (I held a dandelion that said the time had come to leave upon the wind, not to return when summer burned the earth again..), this song is utterly magical, romantic, nostalgic, beautiful, powerful, magnificent, unsurpassed
I get chills every time it gets to that line
Possibly my favorite lyric ever written by Bernie Taupin.
cannot stop coming back to this song
My favorite album of all time my personal favorite song is Someone Saved My Life Tonight
Thank You Mama for turning me on to this at a very age. R.I.P.
Incredibly beautiful and moving. Thanks Elton and Bernie.
This is the best song I have ever heard.
Lie on your bed in the dark, and turn it up as far as you dare!
+Hurricane5555555 You go Hurricane...
Hurricane5555555 love it too...somuch
INTERESTING !!!
Perfectly summarizes my agony with the unwanted divorce. Not so much the ex but having my kids abandon me too.
