Hypotonic Environment:
If a cell encounters a hypotonic environment, (like pure water for instance), water will diffuse into the cell and the cell will begin to swell. ... If solute concentrations are equal between the environment and the interior of the cell, there will be no net gain or loss of H20 from the cell.
Hypertonic Environment:
Hypertonic means that the environment outside of the cell has a higher concentration of solutes than the cell itself. That will attract water molecules from the cell leading to the shrinking of the cell.
Isotonic Environment:
In an isotonic environment, both the water and solute concentration are the same inside and outside the cell and water flows into and out of the cell at an equal rate.
