  • The Sangha is gathered together at Magnolia Grove Monastery in Batesville, Mississippi during the 2011 US Teaching Tour with the theme Cultivating the Mind of Love. This 115-minute dharma talk is from October 2, 2011. This is the last day of Magnolia retreat and may be a little difficult if listeners have not heard the talks from the previous days (see "2011 US Tour" playlist).
The beginners mind. It is a source of energy. A willingness to practice. And to serve others. We are not afraid of obstacles in order to realize our dream and our intention. Siddhartha had this beginners mind, and we can too. The mind of love is the beginners kind. During this retreat has allowed this to arise in our heart. Do we know how to continue this mind?
In Buddhism, there are two kinds of truth: conventional and ultimate. Thay explains how it is similar to what we see in science. We can learn to understand the true nature of reality. When we come to the ultimate truth, we can leave behind our notions of birth and death, suffering and happiness, being and non-being, etc. How can we do this? We cannot be an observer, we must try to be a participant. The Buddha’s insight received under the bodhi tree was to be relieved of all fear. This cannot be learned from notions and concepts.
We learn of Right View, another element of the noble path. Thay tells a story of Katyayana, a student of the Buddha, asking about Right View. A teaching of no-birth, being and non-being, as illustrated by a cloud. Right View is being able to transcend all these notions: being and non-being, birth and death, left and right, above and below, subject and object, etc. All pairs of opposites. We cannot remove one without the other.
Story of a grain of salt wanting to know how salty is the ocean to illustrate the subject of cognition and object of cognition. Being a participant to truly understand.
Talking to a flame to illustrate this teaching of being and non-being.
Thay writes these pairs of opposites on the board: birth and death, being and nonbeing, coming and going, sameness and otherness. All these must be transcended to see the true face of reality.
A teaching on interbeing and four more notions - self, man, living beings, and life span. Thay explains each as outiined in the Diamond Sutra. This Sutra teaches us that humans are only made of non-human elements. This is one of the oldest teachings in deep ecology. The Buddha too is comprised of non-Buddha elements. This is why bowing to the Buddha is not worshiping, but is a meditation.
We have been talking of Right View and dualism. We turn now to three other elements of the noble eightfold path that arise from Right View. Right Thinking can help us remove all discrimination. It is thinking that can produce understanding and compassion. It can heal the world. From these two we can then practice Right Speech. To restore and reconcile. This element includes our ability for deep listening. And then we turn to Right Action. Anything we can do with our body to protect and save. These three are all forms of action, starting with our thoughts. Thinking is already action. And we produce each of these every day. The philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre said that man is the sum of his action. In Sanskrit, this is called karma. Everything we produce will continue us; it does not disappear. We are the author, and that is our continuation. If we can keep our beginners mind alive, surely we will have a beautiful future.
The other elements of the path, briefly outlined in this talk, are Right Livelihood, Right Diligence, Right Mindfulness, and Right Concentration. This path can be seen very concretely in the Five Mindfulness Trainings. We also briefly learn of the Three Doors of Liberation - emptiness, signlessness, and aimlessness - in light of the retreat’s teaching.
We talk concludes with a couple of songs led by Sr. Chan Không.

i don't want to idolise him because i don't think that is good practice but i have to say it is v difficult. because he is always so helpful, he exudes such presence and he has developed so much wisdom and compassion. Of course, love easily manifests in me when i listen to him speak and watch him teaching! And in these modern times, with these videos, it is like thay of the past can always be here in the present. I wish thay of the present moment good health and presence

He offers that bright and gentle countenance, what i think he'd say we all have to offer. i do wonder though if it's possible to shed the non-essential fear-coverings without really going for it, as a monk...i do recall though Lahiri Mahashaya lived as a householder, with a family, a non-ascetic life, yet he was a realized person in yoga. Maybe it's possible!

Ah... mesCheerios you literally took the words right out of my mouth! I feel the same way. But I think that is the power of one person truly transformed how they can inspire others who then become the flame that lights someone’s candle. Many blessings to you (and everyone else) reading, listening, and transforming🙏🏾

Yeah, it is dangerous ground. We tend to idolize people and call them God. When I see Thay, I see the Buddha himself. But then again is nothing special. Because as Thay says: everyone has that nature inside of him/her.
But yeah, we are very lucky to be alive at the same time as Thay.

His Dharma talk is like a river flows in me. I can listen to him all day long. I am so glad that I made my visit to Tu Hieu temple where he was ordained in Vietnam. I was hoping to get a glimpse of him last December, but I was late since he left to Bangkok. I pray Dear Teacher good health! Thank you for the wonderful books that you have also written. The books are also a tremendous help. I have been studying Buddhism here in Korea for 3.5 years now. Dear Thich Nhat Hanh’s teaching on dependent arising, aka Inter-being, is definitely one of a kind. I finished studying several sutras here in Korea Buddhist School for two years and yet I haven’t discovered a modernized style of practice like the way Dear Teacher created. I believe his contribution to Modernized Buddhism is a landmark in history.

I am late to finding Thay's teachings, but I am grateful to Plum Village for making this wisdom still available!!
When I listen to Thay speak, I often feel like laughing and crying at the same time.
Truly an extraordinary being, and the Plum Village institution gives me hope for humanity by sharing this wisdom with children and the young and old alike. Presence and mindfulness are, imo, the most important lessons one can learn to develop compassion and forgiveness, understanding, love, how to cope with loss and suffering, and all the best traits we can develop and manifest as humans.
His cloud analogy is brilliant. And what he is saying is backed up by physics: no energy can be destroyed or created, only transformed, according to one of the Laws of Thermodynamics.
However, there is energy that is not lost, but scattered, and systems tend to move toward less order and energy, again according to physics. Entropy and enthalpy.
I would love to have heard Thay speak on this, if he ever did...

May the triple gem bless you. 🙏🙏🙏. tears of joy come, because for 23 years I cried I would never see the Lord Buddha, I was born late, why my eyes were not blessed, but when hearing the bliss of the dearest sangha, the dhamma, I pray for having received ears, and some intelligence to be able to perceive,

It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

I AGREE THAT IT CAN BE CHALLENGING TO UNDERSTAND But there are so many things that we are having to accept because of scientific research and development CAN you UNDERSTAND Quantum mechanics Or Physics The idea that particles behave differently when they are being observed from when they are not observed If we depend on what we call our logical minds We will not be able to understand what scientific evidence has proved So you have to have an open mind

I love Tich's buddhist teachings. However, his understanding of Western philosophy is just lousy. That's why Ken Wilber and others say that "Buddha was half right". Bhuddism is great for dealing with subjective aspects of reality. But it's not enough for dealing with the whole of reality. There's "yin", but there's "yang" too. A great synthesis is needed.

Andre WN Have you come across any philosophy that embodies this synthesis you describe?

interesting notion: the flame exists because the conditions are almost all present. not sure about that, though it is poetic and very sweet.
Consider this, and tell me what you think:
Is a person who follows the dharma with perseverance and dedication going to improve?
But consider a hitman, and he drinks and does drugs and is really mean, and doesn't want to do any dharma...but all the conditions are there for him to become a great practitioner of the dharma, his free choice to stop all the negative stuff and take up mindfulness. Can we really say that he is therefore a great practitioner of the dharma even while being a hitman, drinking and doing drugs and being really mean, and doesn't want to do any dharma? We cannot say he is not a dharma practitioner ? An event's actual existence based on potential for it to happen?

Just to think; even this guy has a dark side. I imagine him bursting out in a 3-minute rant scaring the piss out of a group of 13 people who he relaxed in the first 37 minutes of the lecture, end then the damage comes.
