Of course its on public roads just looking at the footage you shouldn't even need to ask. Yes the course roads are shut during racing, pets kept indoors etc the whole island cooperates for the event.
Michael Dunlop, who is mentioned in this video still races after losing his uncle, father, and brother to the sport. His uncle was the great Joey Dunlop who holds the record for most TT wins at 26. He was a founding member of the Armoy Armada which also included Joey's brother Jim, brother-in-law Merv Robinson and friend 'Big' Frank Kennedy. Out of the four only Jim survives. Frank Kennedy was killed at the 1979 North West 200 in Northern Ireland and Merv Robinson was killed also at the North West 200 in 1980. Joey Dunlop (Michael's uncle) won his 26th and last TT in 2000 and a week later lost his life in a road race in Tallinn, Estonia. Robert Dunlop, Joey's brother and William and Michael Dunlop's dad, was killed at the 2008 North West 200 where 2 days later Michael won an emotional race that his father was favourite to win. William Dunlop, Robert's son and Michael's brother was killed in 2018 at the Skerries 100 after saying to Michael that he was thinking of retiring as his girlfriend/wife was expecting their first child. For someone to go through all that heartache and pain and still want to do it and be proud that he is keeping the Dunlop name alive needs all the respect he gets and shows why he is one of the favourite riders in the sport.
Pikes peak has nothing on the TT lol. The TT makes the pikes peak looks safe as hell
Just razzing people I don't know anything about racing but clearly people don't understand that. Weird how many snowflakes are out there because in America it's customary to shit talk
@@Killermcknight Shit talk is not the same as talk shit. And you come across as a snowflake yourself. If you don't want to get comments, this is not the platform for you. In particular since, in your own words, you know nothing about racing.
@@KillermcknightHe's just stating facts. If you want to shit talk, no problem, just do it properly.
@@KillermcknightGuy Martin, a former TT rider and fan favorite, raced Pikes Peak for his first time ever, for sh*ts and giggles, won. That’s the difference between a Pike’s Peak rider compared to a TT rider. 2 times on the course, one for qualifying, and the other time for the race, and he won. Lol
@@frankiek2269 Guy Martin, who won at pikes peak first time out is the rider who appears at 9.26 on this video. There is a separate video showing this achievement on UA-cam.
Show some respect to the 240 that choose to ride and die and it’s off the coast of England 🏴🏴🏴🇬🇧
It was a bad joke. Mad respect to not just those who died, but those who choose to do this as well.
The bikes do over 200mph the 135mph was just the lap average speed. Try the peter hickman pov lap of the isle of man, he has a camera on his helmet it really puts the race into perspective.
ua-cam.com/video/4kstEvBVCUo/v-deo.html
This one is great too, and not even close to Hickman's speed.
Guy Martin said that he stopped racing because he had lost the love of the sport and was no longer willing to die for it.
It is completely on public streets with no additional work done, there is not any run off areas or enough crash barriers for every turn. It is truly the best and bravest that race their both competitors and spectators take huge risks every year. A quote from one of the racers once was 'you are going so fast all you see are grey and green blurs, i just try and stay within the grey'
Well you say that, throughout the years they've done tons of road works for the sake of TT safety like widening the roads and even demolishing certain homes. They don't do that anymore because it's all been done already but I'd assume they do really good maintenance on the course sections. But yeah the best crash protection you'll get is a haybale if you're lucky
@@robinv2758 They've done nothing of the sort, the road is much the same as it's been for years.
@@peterfalconer-h3k remember this is a race that's been held since 1907, so throughout the years means somewhere within that 117 year timespan, they already restructured the course in 1907 because the motorcycles couldn't get up the hills due to a lack of power. The major roadworks I spoke of where the roads were widened and certain buildings demolished happened back in the 50s and again in the 70s. So you're right in saying the roads have been like this for years, but you're wrong in saying they never made those changes
@@robinv2758 This details changes to the course throughout it's history en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isle_of_Man_TT_Mountain_Course. There's actually been more than l thought.
You understand what an ‘average’ means, no?
If they AVERAGE 130mph+, then they are riding WAY above that for a significant portion of the lap
They're more about themselves I think. What we call Wankers in Australia.
The man at 9:;25, Guy Martin, took a bike he built himself in his shed to Pikes Peak for a tv show, and despite problems with a misfire on the top half of the mountain, he won his class. Although he's been 2nd or 3rd 17 times he's never won a TT. The roads are closed 30minutes before a race, and there is an army of marshals all around the course for safety reasons, also an air-ambulance on standby.. You can see a POV of the absolute lap record set last year by Peter Hickman of 136+mph.
SPOILER ALERT : he might of wanted to watch that video and now you've taken all tension away of will guy make it to the top
Not to mention John Hinds died. Known as the fast Doctor Alive. Till he died racing to give aid to a rider. As he saved so many riders lives and spectators..
As others have said, "Stop talking over the commentary and you'll learn a lot more". A number of the questions you were asking were explained in the commentary but your gobbing over it meant you never listened.
Let me tell you it was riveting
Shut up
Actually, they heard it about the public streets. They’re funny, but neither one’s elevator goes to the top floors in their comprehension buildings.
Its actually the isle of Man as in Man , not an Island of men , but Isle of Man
@@MarkKenworthy-d2d The title is a play on words referring to it being for men, not kids and wimps, for two weeks every year.
The craziest thing about this race is the riders don’t do it for the money. Grand Prize is only $50,000 USD. They do it for the Tourist Trophy (tt) It makes them Gods.
That’s crazy. It definitely seems to be like something they do because they have a love for it and it’s a thrill for them.
It is a public street.
Up until an hour before race the roads are open to the public . Everyday of the race
Wow! That soon before it starts?
9:43 Because it wasn't explained in the video, I'll let you know what that thing on the back is. It's called a "speed hump," because when the rider is in a full racing tuck with their chin literally an inch above the top of the tank, that hump joins up with the back of their helmet and smooths the airflow over the rider. If there was no hump there, the "dead air" behind the helmet would suck in the air going over it, creating drag. If you've ever seen a semi-trailer or box truck in snow, and see the snow come off the top then get sucked back towards the back of the truck, the hump gets rid of that.
Oooohhhhh now that could make total sense!
OLDEST, FASTEST ROAD-RACE TRACK IN THE WORLD. OVER 220 KILLED SINCE 1909. THE OBJECT, IS TO COMPLETE THE ROUTE , IN THE FASTEST TIME. IN 2023, 7 PEOPLE WERE KILLED, 3 RIDER'S 4 SPECTATORS., THE BIKES CAN / DO OFTEN TRAVEL OVER 220 MPH
Wow, that’s a lot of deaths in just one year 😔 I cannot even imagine going that speed! That’s like rollercoaster speed!
Those spectators were riding the course during interval.
@@Killermcknight the fastest rollercoaster is 100 mph slower then what TT riders are topping out at.
They are just normal streets and the speed restrictions are totally removed during race time. It lasts two weeks, the first to learn the track and the second to race and it's not against each other it's the fastest lap, they set off at 10 second intervals.
To get some sort handle of how dangerous the race is, according team analytics the front wheel only travels about 35 miles of the 37 mile circuit
Its like the F1 race in Monaco. Once a year they shut down the city street and race on them.(in this case essentially they shut down the island) Normal everyday traffic the rest of the year.
The roads are open every day during TT week and they're closed about an hour before the start of the evening's racing.
They also race sidecars which is also fun to watch.
Hi from the UK 🇬🇧 something you might like to check out group B when rallying got too fast ( it's now banned you'll see why but those were the glorious year's)
Guys its anual and on public roads that are closed for two weeks (one week of practice then one week of racing)
The roads are open to traffic during TT week and they're closed about an hour before the start of each day's racing.
Hello, if you want to see just how dangerous this race is, watch Peter Hickman Fastest ever TT lap or watch his full chin camera demo lap. Remember that the video is not speeded up.
Those weren't his only injuries, he underplayed it a lot.
Really?
@@Killermcknight Yes.. as well as broken arm, broken back 2 places, he had ligament damage, dislocated knee fracture to the pelvis, and bruising to the lungs.
Yikes! Glad he’s alive!
My friend raced the TT for many years until he made a critical mistake on a bend during the TT. RIP Mingle.
Oh that’s horrible. So sorry for the loss of your friend 🙏🏻
@@Killermcknight Thanks. He died doing what he lived for.
That’s the best way to go
These are public roads but are extremely well maintained.
Just riding a bike is dangerous never mind this race
No kidding!
I know this is months later but as a you stated you where both motor sport enthusiasts I feel like you did not give this the respect it deserves. I liked both of your takes and I am pretty sure you where just joking and being light hearted but this race is 100% undisputed the most deadly race in the world period. You blazed over the fact that in 107 years of racing 242 people have died, 4 during that year,. You both seemed slightly surprised but dam that is 2.2 deaths per year every year for 107 years. When i saw your motorbike top and you have been to places like pikes peak I thought cool they will love this but you seemed to minimalize the track the competitors and the risk. You must understand, surely that to race some of the most powerful bikes on what is essentially British country roads at over 200mph is totally insane not to mention the fact they are less that 5ft from brick walls and metal fences. You should react to a few more perhaps the Most watched moments or a full lap and get some context.
They shut down the streets for two weeks out of the year. And it's the one race where just spectating can get you killed. 269 deaths...
The land of real freedom! The US could not do this type of race
Ever seen a bike run into the side of a pub

The "backpack" on their backs is to prevent their necks from breaking during a crash. It prevents their head from bending too far backwards.

205 top speeds
Some deaths
Some crashes
Googling shows that seven people have died on the Pikes Peak hill climb against 269 deaths at the IOM TT averaging two deaths per year. There has only ever been one year when nobody died. I think that says it all.
It was a joke man relax
There has been 3 years with no deaths that I know of, including this year but idk if this comment was before this year’s races. 1982 and 2012 were the other 2. I googled to find the exact years and some sites were including Manx Grand Prix deaths, so if you’re including those then you might be right.
Guy Martin a British TT rider won pikes peek on a bike he built in his shed
Forget Nascar ,Forget Pikes Peak, they are a walk in the park, these guys are demigods ,remember these are average speeds.Been to watch many times ,nothing else comes near.
It’s just public streets. With stone walls, stone buildings, curbs, trees, paint stripes etc. Pikes peak is a kiddy ride by comparison.
Oh, sure. Just meant that Pikes Peak has high elevation and lots of turns and sharp curves.

During race time? You don’t mean that they don’t close it down to the public during the race?
@@Killermcknight during the time the racing goes (a fortnight) usually its from like 10AM to 4 PM roads closed, racers only! From 4 PM to 10 AM Public can race it on their own!

@@giafoneozu9998 No they can't, the mountain section is unrestricted but otherwise it's subject to the same rules and regulations as any other day of the year.

8:05 I'm a Brit and had a massive accident in Elkhart Lake, in the US funnily enough. 1 month in hospital followed by 1 year in a wheelchair. Friends and family said, no more bikes!
I said WTF!!! I've just proved I'm invincible!
It can NEVER be explained to somebody that hasn't done it!
Holy smokes! So glad you’re okay. I absolutely believe that. I can see how people who do this would want to get back out there. It makes sense. They do it because they love it. It’s just crazy to me.
Fully public streets, racing through towns and villages. Happens every year and nothing like it on the planet.
Also, the mountain section is one way for the TT period and there is no speed limits, so quite common for members of public to be seriously injured riding bikes over the mountain too.
Remember, Pikes Peak has had 7 deaths.

I really liked this reaction. So genuinely American and honest, like, we have tough tracks and races here, I'll judge..... and then.... ooo perhaps not. :-)

Theres atleast one death every year on this track.
I am not sure why you are trying to compare this to other races... Pikes Peak has had 7 death to date and the TT has had 269 deaths to date and the way you was laughing at that wasn't right. Yes it is public roads. Their top speed is 200+, I am not sure you understand the concept of averages...
I've been to the Isle of man a few times now and it's 2 weeks of pure awesomeness. The racing and the atmosphere is unbelievable. I've seen the dragons tail road and to me it's a bit like a normal country road in the UK 🇬🇧, but our roads are half the width.
These are normal public roads that the residents use when the race isn't happening. In fact, if you go, you can ride or drive on the track in between race sessions. That being said, the roads that make up the course are particularly well maintained. There are a lot of roads on the island that are in much worse condition, but these specific roads are very well groomed.
This is an annual race, and the entire event lasts two weeks, with the first week a series of practices and qualifiers, and the second week holds the various races. The entire island gears up for the race, and it is something that they all take pride in. There isn't enough lodging for all the spectators, so most people camp, and the island has designated camping spots scattered around the course. Many spectators arrive on their own bikes with camping equipment strapped to the bikes.
This island, while being a part of the UK commonwealth, is self governing in a lot of ways. This event is something that could never happen in the UK proper, or most anywhere else in the developed world, but here on the island, it can. There have been many calls to ban the race, mostly from the UK and EU governments, but the island's unique autonomy has allowed the island's authorities to buck those calls and continue on. Fun fact: The Isle of Man is the only place in Europe, outside of Germany, where they have designated roads with no speed limit. That area where we saw the dramatic crash is one of them.
the track is on public roads where normal traffic drives on the roads any other time of year then they close the roads for the practice and races

The TT is held every year, last week in May, and the first week in June. Practice 1st week and racing 2nd week.
The grey blur quote is from Joey Dunlop ( RIP ), who died racing doing the thing he loved most.
If you're a fairly good rider, it'll take you 3 years to learn every corner bump and hump. And another 5 years to master it. 8 years total to be really, really great on the course.
Plenty of stuff available to watch about the TT, i recommend Peter Hickman full lap pov chin cam.
And Mark Higgins 2016 driving a Prodrive Subaru STI race spec rally car 4x4. Again pov gopro, with running commentary and groovey graphics on the screen. Heart rate bmp, g force, speed, rpm, gears, course map, and elevation.
Both these videos are new lap records in their own rights.

Remember the Island although part of Britain its self governed and a tax haven, hence why theres no speed limits on the open roads.

Regarding Pikes Peak. Guy Martin a British TT rider raced it a few years back. I won't give spoilers, but you should do a youtube search for the video and the reaction to Guy Martin Pikes Peak
The back pack is not for aerodynamic drag, it’s actually for confidence, the driver believes is to protect the top part of the spine so any crashers still have upper body movement, unfortunately and the reality is a lot of deaths are due to spinal desegregation and loss of lung function
Going at that speed, I’m not sure there’s much that could save them 😞
It's for aerodynamic purposes only.
