There is a typo at 0:05 which says "Sheer", it should be "Shear". Sorry!

Hello! Do you know if the Skidmore tester device measures the bolt's yield pressure or the bolt's clamping pressure? Thanks for your help and assistance

@@pedrohernandez8373 To measure the clamping force (or pressure) of a bolt you would need a load cell in between the clamped surfaces. You could measure the yield point of a bolt with a strain gauge from Skidmore by stretching the bolt until it begins to deform elastically.

Fatigue would be a good mention as well

    Thanks for the informative video.
I need guidance on selection on Allen bolts.
    We use Metric allen bolts.
How do we choose the size of the bolt and pitch distance between 2 bolts and number of bolts needed to assemble plates ?

why does the yield/ultimate strength calculations are done with the nominal diam. value of the bolt and not the minor diam. which is the actual area that is solicited when bolt is being clamped?

This is the best information I could find on why we use the nominal diameter value. "When a standard threaded fastener fails in pure tension, it typically
fractures through the threaded portion (as this is characteristically its smallest and therefore weakest area). For this reason, the tensile stress area is calculated through an empirical formula involving the nominal diameter of the fastener and the thread pitch."
