    This video was fantastic. I am saving up for an FA20DIT rebuild and have been trying to learn more about the Subaru engines in general. This was exactly what I was looking for.

    Really appreciate the technical information and example engines you set aside to demonstrate to us. I'm pretty much just a beginner when it comes to motors, but thanks to channels like yours I'm understanding and expanding my mechanical knowledge. Fantastic to get ideas and know what is possible from experts like yourselves. My EJ20 is currently undergoing an engine rebuild here in Auckland NZ, and I'm learning heaps in the process. I have been documenting the progress in a special video series called "Project WRX" on our UA-cam channel called diecasttvchannel (aka DCTV). We've subscribed to your channel and look forward to watching many more of your awesome videos. Thanks mate.

    Thanks Brett for the insights on Subaru engines. I'm currently working on a STI conversion of my MY99 Impreza GT including the complete drivetrain with 6-speed gearbox and DCCD. I wasn't sure if the EJ207 always came with forged pistons or just specific model years. So thanks for clearing that up for me.

    • @Captaindan7141
      @Captaindan7141 8 років тому

      Version 5 and 6 EJ207 never had forged pistons regardless of what he said in the video. I think the RA models might have but not a normal STi.

    • @Captaindan7141
      @Captaindan7141 8 років тому

      Or wait, I think it's Version 8 and up that used Hyper-Euteric crappy pistons, the older STi's (like my Version 4 STi) had forged pistons.

    Excellent video sir! Thanks for all the info - really helped to clarify the differences in motors and applications.
    I do have one question on the EJ207 and ‘257 (STI’s) though - Q: Are the blocks on the STI motors actually stamped “EJ207” and “EJ257” or will they still just be stamped “EJ20” and “EJ25” and then differentiated by additional stamping/coding to identify whether/not for STI application?

      The flats are kinda like rotaries... You have to let them warm up before you can beat them or drive them normally. Im pretty sure 80% of people dont let their engines heat up. In an inline its less a problem.

    Not discussed was the major difference when going from a 2L, in the crankshafts, rods and pistons, but should that be obvious?
    All newer 2L/2.5L cranks/blocks are directly interchangeable, but the stroke is different. Main & rod bearings on recent turbo EJ20 and EJ25 are identical. If you mix older stuff you will run into issues with the thrust bearing being on main #3 instead of #5. They can be machined to switch to #5.

    Maybe you can shed some light on reliability of common rail fuel systems, fuel choices (reliable suppliers) and DPF filters. I am reluctant to spend a lot of money on cars with diesels that may be fragile.

    I’ve just bought a ‘05/‘06 Liberty GTb tuned bySTI which I’m assuming is the twin turbo EJ20t? Is it possible to swap it for a ej207 straight out of an actual STI? Does anything else need to be changed? Due to physical constraints I had to buy auto, would the gearbox be able to support the extra load? Is there anything that could be improved with the gearbox? TCU tune? I LOVE the size and shape of the gen4 Lib wagon but I’m coming from a Golf R wagon and could always use MOAR. I’m in AUS so would have to get you guys MRT to look at it, I just wanted to ask first so as not to waste time for either of us. Cheers!

    At the 5:00 mark you talk about the FA series "being a worthwhile engine from a performance point of view". That was in 2016, do you feel the same way about them now, 5 years later? Also, I've read that the FA series uses the same piston make up that the EJ series did, which made them brittle. Are the FA series pistons also brittle like the EJ series or are they stronger than the EJ series?

    hey, im a big fan from brasil, I watch all your videos. I have an ej207 that spun bearing and had a cilinder scraped by the piston, with some axyal spacing on the crank... and my friend has a ej204 that is disassembled and ready to sell. is it possible to assemble this ej204 block with ej204 crank, ej207 pistons, rods, heads and eletronics? (i have a spare piston to replace but a ej207 block is too expensive here in brasil) regards and thanks for sharing so much valuable infos on subaru engines!!

    What type of turbo kit would you suggest for a 2016 subaru liberty 2.5 premium? i dont intend to race or anything like that. Just looking for something that will spool up quickly for better performance from low RPM. The CVT seems to be flat until it hits the 3500-4000rpm range. I have read in the US Subaru released a Legacy 2.5 B4 Turbo.

      hmmm, not sure,we have never done one for that application

    • @djteako
      @djteako 6 років тому

      I can answer that for you easily. NONE !!! An airplane will require an engine similar to a marine engine - they need a very flat power and torque curve throughout the rpm range. These engines are all designed with a peak torque and power at specific rpm. Put a simpler way, for that aplication you need an engine that will produce, lets say 200 hp at 1200rpm, and still 200 hp at 4500 rpm, with little variation. Look for a marine engine.

    • @djteako
      @djteako 6 років тому

      hmm , not sure what I was thinking late at night, but the answer is still blatantly NONE. You need an air cooled engine. There is no way you are going to get a rad etc on an ultra light. You need an engine designed for that exact purpose :)

    • @peterculkin811
      @peterculkin811 4 роки тому

      Actually, these engines are quite popular in autogyros, which are often enthusiast home built small aircraft. I have been a passenger in a two seater autogyro with a scooby turbo flat four. I didn't ask the owner which version, but it was beautifully built.

      almanu04 get an evo! Some dealerships still have them and are letting them go for less than msrp. I picked up a brand new 2014 evo x gsr in July 2016 for $30,999. Came out to $34k and some change with taxes and license. I can beat on that engine and I don't have to worry about engine issues.
      But if you really want reliable hp, get a mustang gt. I have (still have it) a 2012 mustang gt and have zero engine problems. It has 77,000 miles. You can get these for even less.
      Both my cars are stock and I drive them hard.

      It's just a jdm engine 2liter instead of the 2.5 that it comes with. It has a higher static compression so you can't run as much boost.

    Seems the EJ257 is mainly made to cater to the US market which has shitty gas vs. Japan and other parts of the world. This explains why JDM Impreza STI always exclusively employed the EJ207 but thanks to a twin-scroll turbo, significantly higher redline (the forged pistons?) makes equal hp to the larger EJ257 but in a smaller package. The EJ257 makes better torque which Americans seem to want in cars which is likely why it continues to be employed after all these years.
    However knowing this I wonder how Subaru will go from here, as separate castings & engine sizes are going to be costly for the small company. Given the new Ascent announced the FA24, would the USDM & EU market get a FA24 powered STI while JDM switches over to a high-tune FA20, or all future STI would use one single engine size?

    IYO, has Subbie fixed their famous ''blown head gaskets'' issues with their newer models, say 2016 onwards ? Thanks for the great video.

    I have an EJ20 in my forester 06 model. Can I put an EJ25 in it without any trouble? I have a Hyundai computer which caused that horrible hesitation with that model. Its been sorted but it still doesn't run quite right.

    Have you had or dismissed the idea of a front mounted turbo setup on an EJ engine in a GC8? Would you advice against such a configuration?

    What does the new Forester XT have and how reliable is it? I had a turbo fail on my Audi A4 thus I am hesitating on getting another turbo charged vehicle. I know Subaru engine tend to use up oil, does that include the XT?
