Those '57 Chevys were just 3 years old at the time of this race. What a great variety of cars.
"The most fantastic pile up in auto racing history." Loved the story in this one.
Guy NHL
Loo lo
Wendell Scott was involved in the 2 largest pileups in NASCAR history…..THIS race….and the one that ended his career at Talledega. How’s THAT for a nascar trivia question and answer
Among the names that ran this race….Lee Petty (7th),Joe Weatherly (8th), Bobby Johns (9th), DONNIE ALLISON (15th), Wally Dallenbach (24th), Red Farmer (39th), Wendell Scott (45th), and Ralph Earnhardt who finished 67th after being involved in the BIG(GEST) one..
Seeing the construction build of the cars in this race, I'm reminded of another YT posting of a early era NASCAR Modified-Sportsman Race, where the commenter wrote the cars appeared to be Frankenstein creations.
Great shots of a brand new Daytona. Lotta stands and buildings yet to be erected.
Fred Lorenzen wrenching on those cars at Holman Moody!
BR24 ..............before he was a Hot Shoe , for H&M ...........he didn't have a rich daddy to get him in !!!!!
@@dannycalley7777 I'm from the Chicago area so he's a hero to me.
37 cars? There wouldn't be anyone left these days.
Love the old footage
Great to see Fireball run!
Those Studebaker Commanders were perfect for Daytona.
My dads car was in that race. Driven by Dick Nephew of New York
"Don't take me out coach! I can still race!"
Love those old cars!
I would do anything and I mean anything to relive the 70s and 80s. I was born in 1970 but I would love to live through the 60s racing
Wonderful, cheered me up, thanks for sharing.
WOW! To find a junk yard with all this in it. This is a gold mine here. No telling what all these cars are now. We can do without all the mindless babble though.
Joint race between what's now the Whelen and Xfinity series
Awesome
I counted roughly 25 cars stopped. Add that to the 37 cars involved in the wreck and we're looking at at least a 62 car field!
This is what prosperity looks like folks. Or how America functions without government intervention.
Edit: make that a 68 car field. Good times for sure
Funny that you say it's "how America functions without government intervention" when it was at the end of Eisenhower's second term, when Federal spending had nearly doubled during his time in office-most of that increase being infrastructure spending.
What a guy that tiny Lund.
I love the 70cars ❤
Todd there's not 70s car in the race, no 60s either all fifties. Ford's, chevies, olds, buicks, Pontiacs, studebakers, nash. Now you know.
@@saddletramp6935that was the modified and sportsman series at the time, run what ya brung crapshoot
Wait a minute... they're deleting the horns!?! Nope!!
God that guard rail was so unsafe
Guardrail saved the city.
@@karlplaysdrums Tell that to Lee Petty and Johnny Beauchamp
@@DixytheGoat9 Cale went for a flight also, if that's what you're referring to.
Cheese N Rice, was there anything that generation couldn't do.
when I started watching I was wondering how big the pileup would be. glad no one was hurt. this was cool to watch these cowboys just give er the gas.

Football field?
Yes Jack, tween pit road and the front stretch. They still have a temporary motocross track there during bike week.
How do they make the Gen 7 cars today? Not stock anymore.
Haven't been stock since 66, maybe not even then.
Ritchie evans ruined Daytona for the modifieds by going over 210mph
After that nascar said no more
Modern NASCAR is so sterile.
Too bad Nascar fell off the track.
I no longer follow their series.
I stopped sometime in the 90's
It got woke.
Repent and believe in the gospel of Jesus Christ. This is one of many signs of his coming along with the Maui fires and the Euphrates river drying up
True stock cars. There is nothing street car about modern nascar not one part.
Haven't been stock since 1966.
@@bobbobberton7920 No, but back in the early '60s those big Pontiacs, Chevys and Plymouths roared.
