I do not like not having an answer to this question... I'd rather cling to a holy book, ANY holy book! The bible is the closest answer we get and you just need to hold onto that. But I think life is basically one big test to prove ourselves as worthy souls or humans in the eyes of God. The bible doesn't give the purpose of life but it gives the rules to play the game of life. Trial and Error and all the drama we experience. How will you react, what choices will you make? How will you learn?

Life's meaning is what we give it. It's not defined by why we're here, but what we do while we're here. If you go on a killing spree, or give to charity because you believe it's the meaning laid down to you from birth by religion, then you're deluding yourself. No-one is born any one way, you are created by your experiences and decisions. People are responsible for their own actions, not god, and as long as people keep believing that our meaning is what God gives us, we'll never change.
I think people make the mistake of marking the beginning and end of the world at birth and death of an individual. The world does not end when one person dies. We are part of something much bigger and we are all connected as little pieces of a big thing. You have purpose in every meaningful sense of the word. Some people say that it don't matter cause when the sun explodes it will all go away. But that's not really the point either. We are too small to decide whether the sun exploding is important or not. We have a prescribed role to play in the grand scheme of things. What that role is... hard to say. Every religion and philosopher has had a crack at it, lol.
