Two prompts for you this week. 1. What is the best way for a writer to showcase a character's sudden intellect? 2. What movies clearly set up sequels that never materialized? As always thanks for watching!
Give a smarmy Hahvard student an intellectual beat down in a dive bar when he calls out Ben Affleck for lying about his college enrollment status. Apples?
Jurassic Park set up a sequel that they never used. They had that shaving cream can full of DNA samples, Newman dropped it. It was never brought up again.
Other movies filmed here in Wilmington, NC: - Firestarter - Maximum Overdrive - Cape Fear - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Black Dog - Black Knight - Nights in Rodanthe - Domestic Disturbance - Back to the Future - Ironman 3 - etc
Saw a neat deep dive into this movie that talked a lot about the things that 6-year old me missed - one was definitely the DINOhattan/MANhattan thing…the other big one was the fact that all of the cars are electric because they wouldn’t have any fossil fools…weirdly smart for a movie of this caliber…
The fossil fuel thing is actually really smart. I thought it was weird that they were driving the electric cars but my brain didn't go any further than that
I just checked out the trailer...I'm intrigued. It's on Amazon Prime so I'll try to check it out. I love the 1980's interpretation of the future so this is right the hell up my alley
Wow the fact that a movie like this exists makes me glad we have Distracted Nerd. Also makes me wish there will be one for the Jay Leno/Pat Morita buddy cop film Collision Course.
That movie had me scared for the future. I swore homing bullets were going to be a thing. That and mechanical spiders? No thanks. One thing that did happen. I look like Gene Simmons on my new ID. Just more Mexican. The future is terrifying.
Sudden intellect: polysyllabic word-salad. Unfortunate Optimism: Buckaroo Banzai: Across the 8th Dimension. Peter Weller, Jeff Goldblum, John Lithgow, Christopher Lloyd, Ellen Barkin…incomprehensible plot; ABSOLUTELY rockin soundtrack, I could watch it every day of my life and I’m so so sad they never made good on the sequel-promise. Sigh…
I swear, we watched these movies at the same time and had the same reactions, both then, and as adults. We were raised by the same things. Brilliant stuff man.
They said at the end of the Guy Ritchie movie 'Rockenrolla' that the characters from that movie would return in 'the real rockenrolla' and 15 years later still waiting on that sequel haha
I think Phenomenon with John Travolta did the "person suddenly becomes smart" thing because his character manages to learn Portuguese in a rushed car ride. It's not fluency, still some errors, but conversational. It also didn't feel overly rehearsed (like the Brendan Fraser Spanish in Bedezzaled where you can tell he learned his lines phonetically) But in a comedy, Always Sunny just ripped off Flowers for Algernon with the maze stuff and then he was helping on a doctoral thesis.
Ways to show one's intellect: scribbling on a chalkboard or a whiteboard to calculate how to create time travel. Setups for sequels that went nowhere: "Green Lantern." The Honest Trailers had a hilarious tag at the end of their video for it.
Another great video Nerd Man! This movie broke my heart when I first saw it. But it was this experience with unmet expectations that prepared me for the let down of The Phantom Menace. JarJar couldn’t do anything to me that Koopa hadn’t already done. Also I don’t think you mentioned it but Toad is played by Mojo Nixon. How the hell did this movie get so much talent in front of the camera and no talent at all behind it?
Same stakes as Mortal Kombat nice and in Phenomenon John Travolta just looked the same when he got smarter.... The Last Airbender definitely ended thinking they was getting a sequel 🤣
I am a little late to respond but, another popular movie trope for displaying sudden genius is reading "War and Peace", playing chess and winning against 3 to 4 old men (Bobby Fischer style), along with a misquote about the Pythagorean Theorem like the Scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz.
I watched this movie in theaters as a kid and at the time I was a little pissed that they strayed so far away from the source material but then as I got older I started to realize.....what the hell were they supposed to do with that source material. I think they did a decent job, especially at the time, turning that weirdness into a live action movie. As an adult I can appreciate it a little bit more for it's creativity. Plus Bob hoskins was probably the best live action Mario I could ever imagine.....other than the kid friendly lou albano lol
If you enjoyed the movie, you'd probably enjoy the story of the movie being made even more. :D It was full of re-writes and booze, actors gave up on trying to learn their scripts after so many re writes and the original ideas were nothing close to this. I think even Bob Hoskins crashed a vehicle during filming when he was drunk
Though it wasn't demonstrating a sudden rise in intellect, Good Will Hunting's bar scene did suddenly demonstrate Will's intellect by having him demolish a student for trying to sound smart by quoting a book verbatim. It was very "Oh, you've read a book? Well I've read them all and I don't even go here."
I remember the trailer being more serious and having the tagline “this is no game”. Then the movie being so awful and nothing to do with the game that I’m glad they didn’t further ruin my childhood by doing a Mega Man live action movie 🤣
Walking by an unfinished formula on a random blackboard and instantly solving it....or they stay up all night, to ths point of obsession, reading countless books
Before he passed, I am very glad I was able to thank my dad and apologize to him for making him take me to see this movie because I'm sure I was unbearable about it. (See also Wizard, The.)
Way to make a character smart: that one movie or show where they have the character incorrectly recite the formula for Pythagoras theory by having them say the sides of an isosceles triangle. I can't remember what it's from, but man, that's silly. Movie with no sequel: the bad fantastic four movie ... ok ok, the worst fantastic four movie, they are all bad.
yeah i saw the trailer when it came out and even back then i was like..."Man that looks like SHHHHHHHIT!!!" and years later when i worked at Hollywood Video someone Put it on the BIG WALL of TV's and SWEET LORD WAS IT SHHHHHHHHHIT!!
Obviously, when characters become super smart, they start using unnecessarily long words. For everything. All the time. It's just a toaster, but to a smart person, it's a two-tiered yeast-heating contraption.
Newly intelligent people in movies are then often surrounded by beakers and test tubes with monitors displaying new research they start immediately upon gaining said intelligence
My all-time favorite way that somebody just becomes smart out of nowhere is the Old Reliable brain tumor from Phenomenon..... Um spoiler alert I guess although in my defense the movie is almost 30 years old and I seriously doubt anybody's going out of their way to look up Phenomenom to watch, next thing you're going to tell people are looking up Michael... also that reminds me you should review phenomenon. Michael
I always thought Super Mario Bros: The Movie looked dumb from the previews, but know after you, Distracted Nerd, did your breakdown, the movie still looks dumb and its plot is a mess.
Two prompts for you this week.
1. What is the best way for a writer to showcase a character's sudden intellect?
2. What movies clearly set up sequels that never materialized?
As always thanks for watching!
1. Magic or being related to someone great.
2. Spaceballs or Loaded Weapon 1.
1. Stacks of big books and allergies
2. Masters of the Universe
Give a smarmy Hahvard student an intellectual beat down in a dive bar when he calls out Ben Affleck for lying about his college enrollment status. Apples?
1. Solving a Rubik's cube.
1. Wearing a sweater vest, especially with a plaid design.
2. Terminator Genesys.
Jurassic Park set up a sequel that they never used. They had that shaving cream can full of DNA samples, Newman dropped it. It was never brought up again.

Wilmington may now be my favourite city.
Street Fighter where m.bisons glove powers through the rubble.
Also I’m crying at the if you wanted to see Mario grind with the bad guy fish from Mario 3 … you freak!

@@DistractedNerd I did see the fan edit on the archive its still unwatchable 👍
That Bill / Jane bit... pure genius.
I actually cut out some parts because it got too dark. 😆
@@DistractedNerd You should do an after dark special on that!
Fuck yeah, distracted nerd saves the day once again
Scarecrow in the Wizard Of Oz is probably the origin of the suddenly smart trope in cinema
Once again I am asking you to review the Gene Simmons & Tom Selleck classic the Runaway. It's a bonkers movie!
I just checked out the trailer...I'm intrigued. It's on Amazon Prime so I'll try to check it out. I love the 1980's interpretation of the future so this is right the hell up my alley
You're a beautiful man, don't go changing!
Wow the fact that a movie like this exists makes me glad we have Distracted Nerd.
Also makes me wish there will be one for the Jay Leno/Pat Morita buddy cop film Collision Course.

The future is terrifying.
@@MrTUBEular10 I mean the spider can still be a thing cause robot drones. I could also see smart bullets also being around the corner.
Definitely keep the old-school classroom projector bits!!! That shit was GOLDEN!
Tom Cruise's Mummy was supposed to kick off the Universal Movie Monster Cinematic Universe.
This is the type of content the world needs!
Since Fisher Stevens was involved it may be time to do the Short Circuit movies.
Been bingeing your videos this weekend and I have to say, I'm glad I found this channel. You genuinely make me laugh.
Sudden intellect: polysyllabic word-salad.

I love that the reproduction video was made by frog dog cigarettes.
To celebrate "The Batman" that just recently came out, would love to see the Michael Keaton 1989 Batman breakdown... that would be awesome
Perfecto!!! Love your work DN!!

they made a semi-official comic sequel to this and it's weird af and John Leguizamo was involved.

"the devil's vacuum"- most accurate description ever
I've been in and out of therapy for the past 25 years trying to rid my Vestiphobia which I trace back to Remo Williams never getting its sequels.
I've been waiting for you to do this one.
That Bill/Jane bit is either DN's current life or the process through which he was conceived and I'm not sure which one I think is funnier.
Same stakes as Mortal Kombat nice and in Phenomenon John Travolta just looked the same when he got smarter.... The Last Airbender definitely ended thinking they was getting a sequel 🤣
He-man and John carter were setup for sequels that never happened.
Girl with the dragon tattoo is one that set up a sequesl that didnt happen, as well as the air bender movie, & dragonball evolution
Set up sequel: Masters of the Universe

Wait, so why was Koopa after the meteorite piece?
We may never know.
It's in the extended cut.
So he can merge the two worlds together once that piece is put back with the meteorite
Was waiting for this one
Yeeeaaaahhhh, booooooyyyyeeeee!!
Early release today!
Did anyone else say “finally” when they saw Super Mario Bros? 😂
I couldn't wait to see this one when it was in the theaters. My disappoint was so deep, that's the only time I ever saw it.
1. British accent, 2. Avatar The Last Airbender and Halloween Resurrection
They missed an opportunity to yell, "Jump, man!" (Jumpman).
If you watch this as a standalone movie, and forget about the source material. It actually isn’t too bad as a standalone idea.
I remember the trailer being more serious and having the tagline “this is no game”. Then the movie being so awful and nothing to do with the game that I’m glad they didn’t further ruin my childhood by doing a Mega Man live action movie 🤣
Give them a fake diploma like they did in OZ to the scarcrow

Is that cartoon of pregnancy loosely based on AL bundy????🤣🤣🤣🤣
It is
That reproduction video🤣🤣🤣🤣
Super smart guy always does a rubix cube
I think putting glasses on a person makes writers think they convey intelligence lol. Or maybe im wrong bone daddy
End credits scene in Masters of the Universe....."I'll be back." No you won't. lol
Is he a president a king or a general? He's kind of doing a Padme!! She couldn't decide if she was a queen a senator
I can’t help but think how massive this movie would have been if it was even REMOTELY done well.
This breakdown kindly reminded me how star studded this movie is.
Dr.Detroit never got the sequel announced during the end credits („wrath of mum“)
_History Of The World Part 1_ and _Loaded Weapon 1..._
Flash Gordon set itself up for a sequel that never happened, at least not that I know of
Hahaha, bone daddy!!
Other movies that set up a sequel that obviously would have and never did happen:
-The Last Airbender
-Dragon Ball Evolution
Craziest thing about this movie is that there's a Megadeth song on the soundtrack.
Godzilla for one.
Before he passed, I am very glad I was able to thank my dad and apologize to him for making him take me to see this movie because I'm sure I was unbearable about it. (See also Wizard, The.)
The pointer sisters and Nintendo . Also my two weaknesses as a child
Please release the sex Ed video as a stand alone. That was phenomenal
That Human reproduction video makes a lot of sense. It totally explains why ugly nerds rule the world. LOL
This was unfortunately filmed here in Wilmington, NC. We reluctantly claim it.
Hold on a sec...they actually made a Mario Brothers Movie...no I just can't!!!
There's more end credits after the credits of the Koopa brothers. At least there is on my copy of the movie.
Samantha Mathis was my first crush.
Thumb and forefinger pressed against head while wearing thick glasses
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PLEASE, PRETTY PLEASE review Stephen Kings Sleepwalkers movie!!! Hell, better yet do ALL of Stephen Kings movies 😂

they could show how smart they are by getting the clock to work right on a VCR....
Koppa was never a dinosaur/T-Rex. In the game he was a giant turtle what shoot flams. Yeah the directors was dumb.
1. Loosely state the Pythagorean Theorem? 2. First Blood?

Another way you prove someone is smart is have them explain the geometry of an isosceles triangle. Like the strawman did.
Preferably as quickly as they can possibly say it.
Innerspace set up a sequel that never happened.
A sudden propensity towards verbosity and a floureric usage of thesauratic vocabulary.
