    The ending of season-3 was absolutely dumb and it completely did something that was opposite of Butcher's character. Like, given the hatred he bears for homelander, it's unlikely he would have betrayed SB in a practical situation. He could've found another way to save Ryan but completely demolishing his best bet against Homelander was just trashy. Same goes for everyone else

    • @RexPomaro
      @RexPomaro 3 місяці тому +5

      It was kind of the point that it wasn’t normal. It’s character development that had been building up from the previous seasons.

    • @SirGrimLockSmithVIII
      @SirGrimLockSmithVIII 3 місяці тому +22

      @@RexPomaro It's a contrivance to keep Homelander alive. Like Op said, there could have been plenty of alternative ways in which Butcher could have evacced Ryan and proceeded with the plan.
      Homelander was a top threat and more of a danger than Soldier Boy. Despite how much of an asshole bully Soldier Boy proved to be to his crew, he actually knew when to restrain himself and listen to others. The writers showed us that he would never want to actively kill civilians on a global scale like Homelander would and could. He never thought to take advantage of his chest nuke as a means to take over a country or Vought. He just wanted revenge against his team (even if they weren't in the wrong in that scenario), and then he'd probably just fuck off and not bother anyone.
      And yet the climax tried to pretend that suddenly he was the same type of psycho as Homelander that needed to be put down. The writers definitely messed up if that was their intention.

    • @RexPomaro
      @RexPomaro 3 місяці тому +6

      @@SirGrimLockSmithVIII The whole point about soldier boy wasn’t that he was crazy like homelander, it was that he attacked Ryan, perpetuating the cycle of abuse throughout his family. Butcher immediately turned on him because he was protective of Ryan and had changed enough so that he was willing to set aside his main objective to put down soldier boy. The writers nailed soldier boy, because paternal abuse is a massive influence on his character. As for the fact that they could evacuate Ryan and continue, once SB attacked him that wasn’t an option for two reasons: 1. The fight was extremely intense and if butcher left homelander would wipe the floor with everyone, and 2. Butcher’s morals have grown, so the point is that though it may not have been what the old Butcher would have done, doing the “irrational” thing and killing soldier boy for perpetuating abuse shows character development on Butcher’s side.

    • @SirGrimLockSmithVIII
      @SirGrimLockSmithVIII 3 місяці тому +6

      @@RexPomaro Your thematic analysis of the moment only works when you conveniently ignore that Homelander is still right there and will continue to enact far worse things than paternal abuse if he lives to see another day.
      Stopping Soldier Boy in the name of ending an abusive paternal cycle does wrap things up in a neat little bow on a theoretical level, but when the scene that's supposed to make this thesis statement is actually executed, there are certain aspects which seem to go askew.
      The writers, for one thing, established that Soldier Boy is capable of reason so long as you don't sound like Hughie. Soldier Boy seemed to respect and listen to Butcher during their brief stint together so if Butcher spoke up about Ryan or briefed him on the situation before confronting Homelander then there was a chance that he would have made an accommodation.
      Another thing to note is that Soldier Boy didn't really pay much attention to Ryan until Ryan lasered him. Obviously then he went ham for a sec and slammed the poor kid into a wall, but nothing about that move seemed inherently abusive in the way the writers wanted it to come across. All of his "paternal hate" was directed at Homelander during his monologue but he never shared that same animosity towards Ryan initially. The punch he dealt to Ryan still had the mark of a toxic bully who didn't know how to deal with non-shitty people standing up to him (like whenever Hughie called him out), but that was more of a one-and-done "stay out of my way" tap rather than a "I will proceed to redirect all of my self hatred out on this kid specifically for as long as I live because he has my blood" type of gesture like he made towards Homelander.
      And that key difference in intent is the crux of the mistake that the writers were making when attempting to write Soldier Boy as equally despicable as Homelander. It's the same thing that plagues Soldier Boy's history with Mother's Milk's family. Did he actually deliberately target MM's grandfather for a racially motivated murder like Stormfront killing that old lady's father back in the 60s, or was it just a case of involuntary manslaughter like A Train running through Robin? Both case are fucking awful for sure, and both acts deserve criminal punishment, but one is clearly worse than the other.
      The writers kept telling us that Soldier Boy was no better than Homelander, but then they would accidentally not go far enough with an action that he's supposed to take that's supposed to prove that he's no better than Homelander or would slip in certain things or withhold information that would nullify the action to some degree.
      If the writers really wanted to keep consistent with the parental abuse theme, if they really wanted to show that Soldier Boy needed to be taken out in that finale confrontation, then they should have really made him go off on Ryan after that initial retaliation. Have him spit out the most vile thing he could say to his grandson that made it clear he saw him in the same way as Homelander beyond a half-assed "You little shit". Make him scream some weird unhinged drivel you would only hear from an old folk's home as he starts walking towards Ryan with the specific intent to finish what he's started to him and only him, as if he's conflating Ryan and Homelander for the same person in a PTSD-induced rage.
      Him silently starting the chest laser again just feels too disconnected and detached, especially when it turns out Maeve survived the nuke in the end, so for all we knew he was just gonna depower Homelander and Ryan since they're supposed to be much stronger than her.

    • @RexPomaro
      @RexPomaro 3 місяці тому +1

      @@SirGrimLockSmithVIII you might be right about the soldier boy perpetuating abuse on Ryan thing not hitting hard enough, but regardless the point still gets across. When I watched the episode, I interpreted it as SB attacking Ryan because he thought he was weak. As for the argument that Homelander is a bigger threat, that’s definitely true. And it’s going to be a plot point that Butcher will have to deal with. The scene wasn’t attempting to tie everything up, it was posing a question to Butcher for s4: did he do the right thing? Should he have killed Homelander?

    homelander seems weirdly normal in the earlier seasons... hes a nutcase now

    • @karenroque3583
      @karenroque3583 3 місяці тому

      That’s what a lot of bashing and betrayals does to a motherfucker. At the start of the series, Homelander was on top, unchallenged, and unquestioned in his superiority. He saw himself as perfect because no one had told him otherwise, so he was far more secure and in control. But since season 1, he’s had people (who MADE him) tell him he’s not just imperfect, he’s a failure. You hear that enough times, you’ll start to believe it. On top of that, he’s had to murder multiple lovers and threaten many “friends” because they just kept screwing him over. Of course he’s unhinged now. Shit’s been going wrong for him ever since Butcher decided to become a problem.
      This is not to excuse his behavior btw. It’s just fascinating to see how much he’s fallen and how the actor portrays that in the later seasons. He’s not a different character, external consequences shaped him into the hair-trigger transparent psycho he is now.
