I think if we already practice Dorje Shugdan, we should continue as it is a practice bestowed by our precious Gurus. If we don't practice it, we should not disparage others who do because that is not what the Dalai Lama has ever said and taught. We should all start to practice the Dharma and not get carried away with politics.

If smashing people's shrines and threatening poeple with death is considered by followers of the DL the right thing to do then they have little understanding of Buddha's teachings and should study correctly and follow the unbroken lineage teachings and put them into practice...the core of that is to not cause harm to others!

I was there for his teaching on Saturday July 12. The Shugden Protesters were there, and yet it did not alter the calm that pervaded. His Holiness created a presence that I still feel up to this day, a week later. It was amazing to look around and see all the smiles on everyone's face, it filled me with great joy.
Anyhow, I hope that the Shugden practitioners can find peace, after all...we are all brothers and sisters following the Buddha's teachings. Blessings to all.

If the Dalai Lama calls it spirit worship, then what does he call consulting the Nechung Oracle? He should therefore be fair and ban Nechung also. And all other Dharma Protectors as they could have once been evil spirits. Didn't the Dalai Lama consult Dorje Shugden when he was about to exit Tibet in 1959 in order to get out safely?

From an outsider's point of view, worshipping one deity or another is neither worse or better, in fact, is all about beliefs. If Dalai Lama preaches compassion, tolerance and respect, he should perhaps put it into practice. I find it deeply disappointed that he goes around talking about love when he is discriminating about people in Tibet because they follow a certain cult. It has been claimed that certain Shugden followers have committed crimes... and who hasn't in any given community? What about the sexual abuse that many monk children endure all over Tibet? Wouldn't it be a reason too to then ban those monasteries? Why is the Dalai Lama turning a blank eye on this very important issue and focusing so much on the Shugden followers? I have no affiliation with the Shugden cult, I am simply a defender of human rights and democratic values, I am dismayed to see that those values are not important in the Dalai Lama's eyes. After all, he is the icon of a tradition strongly entrenched in hierarchy and privilege. A real disappointment.

You fell for their line. The Dalai Lama was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize for a very good reason.
Many Buddhist gurus, including myself, reject the practice of Shugden.
There is no "ban". Trijang Chocktrul Rinpoche has been allowed by the Dalai Lama to do Shugden practice.
There is an EXCLUSION. If you do Shugden, then don't attend a Dalai Lama empowerment.
The Shugden people claim to be wronged and they attack. Viciously.
Everyone is getting sick of them. Including lots of principal Tibetan lineage holders.
And the Dalai Lama has millions of devoted followers.
He says it is better to not do Dorje Shugden, so they follow his very good advice.
I have repeatedly defeated the Shugden people in online discussions. I would rather do something more constructive than fighting off vicious dishonest fools. But this is strategic defense of Great Way Mahayana / Buddhism and I have to get the job done right. I have succeeded on the discussions for this and other videos.
The bad guys will lose. He who throws mud generally loses ground.
The major western group doing Shugden, the New Kadampa, will fall. People leave them and find much better alternatives. The online blogs for New Kadampa and Shugden tell the real story. The truth will out.
Even the muggle outsiders get it. The Shugden activists only make enemies for their cause, not friends.

      Amazon.com Review
As a primer on living the good life, few books compete with How to Practice, another profound offering from the exiled Tibetan Buddhist leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Westerners may be confused by the book's title, assuming that it focuses solely on Buddhist meditation and prayer techniques. Though it does address meditation and prayer, at its core this is a book that demonstrates how day-to-day living can be a spiritual practice. There are two ways to create happiness:
The first is external. By obtaining better clothes, better shelter, and better friends we can find a certain measure of happiness and satisfaction. The second is through mental development, which yields inner happiness. However, these two approaches are not equally viable. External happiness cannot last long without its counterpart.... However, if you have peace of mind you can find happiness even under the most difficult circumstances.
As he has in previous books (An Open Heart, The Art of Happiness), the Dalai Lama reminds us that developing peace of mind means paying attention to our daily attitudes and choices as well as taking the time to meditate and be prayerful. The six-part book covers Buddhist meditation techniques and visualization exercises as well as daily thoughts and actions that foster morality and wisdom. --Gail Hudson

      To Practice Peace and Kindness
By Robin Friedman HALL OF FAMETOP 100 REVIEWERVINE VOICE on March 28, 2002
This book by H.H. the Dalai Lama may be read by those wishing an introduction to Tibetan Buddhism and by those wishing to begin or develop their practice.
The Dalai Lama attempts to answer the basic question: "How can people be happy?" His answer outlines a path of spiritual growth and practice. Although based upon Tibetan Buddhism, there is wisdom in the book for anybody seeking spiritual growth, within or without any specific religious practice.
The book consists of six short sections. It begins with a brief discussion of the life of the Buddha which, as the Dalai Lama points out, encompasses the basic teachings of the Buddhist path: morality, concentrated meditation and wisdom. The Dalai Lama then explains the basis of each teaching in short chapters. It is good that the book gives its focus to moral practice -- curing anger, lust, hatred, and agression and wishing well to oneself and others.
Chapter III of the book discusses meditation practices and will introduce the beginner to the value of meditation and to several meditation techniques. The Dalai Lama stresses the need for consistent practice and for patience and for the need of controlling one's expectations.
There are several chapters which discuss the difficult but key Buddhist teaching of dependent origination. Much of this material the Dalai Lama also covers in an earlier book called "The Meaning of Life."
There is a concluding section on Tantra, a uniquely Tibetan practice. I think it is better for the average person to remain with the practices of morality and concentration described earlier in the book.
Some of the unique features of this book are the Dalai Lama's anecdotes of his life in Tibet before the Chinese Invasion of 1950 and of his teachers. There is a substantial discussion of sexuality in the book and of how it may be used (and abused) in the search for peace and kindness. (pages 192-196) There is a translation of the Heart Sutra, a key Buddhist text with a commentary by the Dalai Lama. (159-163)

      Buddhism for Beginners
      By E. Thompson on March 19, 2002
I am completely new to Buddhism and am thoroughly impressed by the Dalai Lama's clear, simple explanation. He effectively describes how even a complete Western beginner like myself can begin to end suffering by practicing. Throughout the book, the Dalai Lama's enlightenment and compassion shine off of the pages through modest stories of his life and experiences. The Dalai Lama starts out the book with the basics of Buddhist morality, moves on to the practice of meditation, and ends with the details of wisdom and tantra. There are images for meditation, lists of moral and amoral thoughts and deeds, and even a short explanation of the concept of emptiness.
Most striking of all is the Dalai Lama's comment at the very end of the book, "Though my own knowledge is limited and my experience is also very poor, I have tried my best to help you understand the full breadth of the Buddha's teaching." With these words, the Dalai Lama sets a startling example for the aspiring student by both showing humility and providing a reminder of the breadth and depth of Buddhist enlightenment. I higly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in beginning to follow the Buddhist path.

Multi leveled book for practicing Buddhists
By Tom Perigrin on August 6, 2005
This is not really an introductory Buddhist text, although the previous reviews suggest that some (but not all) non-Buddhists have gained by reading it. Rather, it's title exactly describes it - if you are a practicing Buddhist, it tells you "How To Practice".
Of course, there is no single way to practice - in fact, there are at least 84,000 ways to practice spread over many traditions (Theravadan (SE Asia), Mahayanan (Zen, Pure Land), and Vajrayana (Tibetan). This book is primarily written for Tibetan Buddhists, but the guidelines are sufficiently broad that I have given this book to Zen and Theravaden Buddhists who found much to agree about.
The book is broken into three major sections - mirroring the three fold grouping often applied to the 8-fold path: morality, meditation and wisdom. The book also introduces the Tantric methods of Vajrayanan Buddhism.
Each chapter covers it's topic in a clear, concise fashion, and ends with a "Summary for Daily Practice". This helps tie the writing (which can be somewhat theoretical) into the title of the book "How To Practice".
The first section introduces the Four Noble Truths, and expands upon them and finally brings them to ground in practices such as such as the Four Wholesum Practices, the Six Perfections, etc.
The second section is a brief but very clear introduction to various types of meditation, including analytical and stabilizing meditation, etc. I have loaned the book to other practitioners and they agree that this is a great book to loan to beginners.
The third section is about Wisdom - the nature of reality and relative and ultimate truth (and for those of you who are really dedicated - emptiness). He ties all of this together with brief analysis of the Heart Sutra.
The book is only 220-odd pages long. This means it is just a brief overview. A Tibetan scholar (Geshe) will spend 18 years studying 1000's of pages covering these topics. However, in one way of looking at it the book is far too long. A student of Zen might say the whole answer is contained in one Koan or statement such as "Go Straight". And that too is the nature of Buddhism - it is both so huge and ulitmately so simple.

Honestly, I don't feel one way or the other about Shugden practice but mainly because I'm not too informed as to what it's about. This is the most straightforward answer I've gotten from a Tricycle article.
    www.tricycle.com/feature/letting-daylight-magic-the-life-and-times-dorje-shugden
The so-called Drakpa Gyaltsen* pretends to be a sublime being. But since this interfering spirit and creature of distorted prayers Is harming everything, both dharma and sentient beings, Do not support, protect or give him shelter, but grind him to dust.
    - The Fifth Dalai Lama (1617-1682)
*The Drakpa Gyaltsen was the Fifth Dalai Lama's rival. Dorje Shugden is considered to be his reincarnation, resurrected to oppose the involvement of Gelugpa monks with Nyingma teachings.
If people want to practice, fine. If people don't want to practice, also fine. I don't really approve of the steps taken to exclude the Shugden practitioners at all. But the Dalai Lama is human and is prone to make mistakes as humans do. Hopefully soon he'll see that his decision divides people and that, in it's essence, contradicts the teaching of the one-ness of humanity. That doesn't mean all he says is bad. Just that mistakes were made. Big mistakes but human mistakes.

Animal murder is like any murder, If a man murders a person and others eat his body, they will all be implicated in the murder and equally receive punishment. the world wide suffering and murder of animals is the karmic cause of violence in our world. Besides destroying the forests and oceans this is main reason for war, famine, disease and all sufferings plaguing man-kind. I see a world plagued with pain and suffering, war, famine, natural disaster, mental illness, it makes it impossible for me to be peaceful and happy with so much unhappiness in the world, I have spent 20 years searching for why its like this and have realized that their is KARMA. Karma is as real as gravity, its absolute. like what goes up must come down.I see it so clearly it has forced me to change my life and live with it, as to go against it is like walking of a ten story building in ignorance of gravity. Violence is everywhere people hurting people, but if we take a look from another angle we can see people being hurt by other people, and then we ask why? Why are people being hurt by other people? why do a lot of good people suffer violence? like women and children why are they receiving violence? The list of happenings where innocent people lose their lives is unending, far to much to list here so why? what activity are these cultures all doing that could possibly bring about such violence as seen in wars etc... the answer is "Animal slaughter", killing and causing the suffering of animals, its the only thing they all do that is violent. Cause and effect, we reap what we sow, thall shalt not kill, Karma. This and Hurting mother earth in all variety of manner, but mainly this. You only need go to any slaughterhouse to see the cause of murder genocide anguish and fear. The poor animals are screaming just like we do, they are fearful and in anxiety just like we are, if we want a non-violent world, we have to be non-violent. Their is no empathy in a society of animal killers and people who destroy rain-forest and kill all the oceans creatures. This was the Buddha's main conclusion in concerns to the cause of suffering. Violence results in violence, if you read this please try to see this, Karma is 100% reality, means weather you believe or not, doesn't matter, whether your young or old, like gravity it doesn't distinguish, fire burns weather your know its hot or not. If you don't agree with violence don't commit violence. This is where all our societies have gone wrong and thus been destroyed. take the fruit from the trees, the leaves from the gardens etc theirs no need to kill. Thank-you.

If one understands properly the function of protector deity practice there is no issue. The truth is that the D L speaking out against this practice which has been passed down to him through the most venerated spiritual guides has produced vast amounts of suffering for many people. Those who see him as the leader of Buddhist teachings (this is not the case but he is in a position of great authority) have acted on those words and created violence and hatred against many Tibetans in particular.

Shugden is not an Arabic influence and His Holiness is not trying to reject foreign spirit. The Shugden or Gyalpo ,as it is called, is born out of negative aspiration and has been worshiped by some section of Yellow hat sect. The Buddha never worshipped a spirit nor consider them as buddhistavas. Unlike Nechung (WHO IS A STATE ORACLE OF TIBET BUT DALAI LAMA NEVER CONSIDER HIM AS A BUDDHA OR BUDDHISTAVA), the shugden has been rejected by many great lamas past and present. He has been the centre of controversy for centuries. Since, shugden worship is not a buddhist practice, His Holiness is right in expelling its worshippers from monasteries.(Nagarjuna has expelled thousands from nalanda university). His Holiness never denied religious freedom as he don't have authority or power to do so. Though His Holiness a compassionate and loving master, he needs to be tough as foremost leader of Buddhist world to keep Buddha's teaching intact and pure... no one can tolerate adulation in Buddha's teaching.

Nechung is a spirit bound by oath to serve the dharma , the dalai lama contradicts himself by saying we do not seek advice by lower beings , he argues that Dorje Shugden is a Spirit and by that easily eradicates buddhist lineages and declares their teaching to be wrong and a-dharma , only by advice from his spirit which is only on duty because it gave an oath to do so , no one can claim something else neither i can claim that as we have no insight in the spirits motivations .
if i would be a foe of buddhism and would have the power and might of the dalai lama i would act like he did , divide and conquer as the free masons like to say , spread the seeds of doubt and get ppl weird , the doubts alone will do a great job , who would turn an eye to a teaching where such things occur ? then his recognition of the second karmapa , what is this , the sharmapa and the kagyu lineage do not need the dalai lamas recognition , the sharmapa has this authority and again he divided a former unified lineage and no one knows how destructive this decision will be in the future . when i look at the tibetans who get expelled from their communities only because of DS worship and the suffering caused by that , the violent attacks on innocent ppl , is this compassion ? is this the acting of an incarnated Buddha ? and if so why does he not really explain it or at least one time debates it ?

Just so people can stop centering there criticism of this issue around His Holiness, and for those claiming he has strange body language which means "he's not telling the truth" even though thats just how he and other teachers ive seen sometimes move there body while talking, theres more you all need to learn about this issue than just videos of the Dalai lama talking about it. First off, he's not lying when he says that the 5th Dalai Lama advised againat this practice. The 13th Dalai Lama was against it as well. Along with His Holiness Sakya Trizin, Mindrolling Rinpoche, many Nyingma Lamas, the Nyingma tradition in which this practice actually is divisive towards, and Guru Padmasambhava himself gave prophecies of a time when Tibet will divide and fall apart when people start worshipping apirits as though they would Buddhas. Also, in the order of reverence within the merit field, the Guru is at the very top with the Buddhas, and the deities and bodhisattvas and arhats all the way down to the bottom are all established in hierarchical order. Guess what remains at the bottom...dharma protectors. Why? Because dharma protectors are not actually part of the 3 jewels, the are aids in one's practice but are not the center of one's practice. So when you give an initiation for a protector practice, something is off. A buddha or other deity can be considered a protector because they protect as they are objects of refuge. However a strictly dharma protector is not a buddha. Furthermore, Lama Zopa, who advises against the practice especially within the FMPT, and Choden rinpoche who himself was a student of this lineage, gave up this practice and followed His Holiness. So are they now abandoning their lineage and teachers?? Nonsense. The fact that the Dalai Lama thinks critically and can make rational decisions and can change his mind on certain things shows he does not follow dogma. Because real Dharma is not dogma.

if we want to keep the precious teachings of this religion we have to go back to the roots and re establish our way towards liberation and the tools for that goal .

As a Tibetan, will somebody ask him when he will lead us closer to our freaking Independence??????? Just ask him, what are you doing to gain our Independence? I love peace and world peace, but what the ..... are you doing to help Tibetans gain their much due Independence? If you actually read the story of the Fifth Dalai Lama, as he is suggesting, you will see that he eventually realized he made a mistake about Dorje Shugden, recognized him as a Wisdom Buddha and made a statue of him and wrote a praise to him. This is all explained in "Music Delighting an Ocean of Protectors" written by Trijang Rinpoche, the current Dalai Lama's teacher. We are waiting for the current Dalai Lama to follow the example of the fifth and realize the mistake he is making.

Re: "We are waiting for the current Dalai Lama to follow the example of the Fifth [ Dalai Lama ]".
He does. The Fourteenth Dalai Lama, like the Thirteenth and the Fifth Dalai Lamas, oppose Shugden.
The mistake of the Shugden activists, which is their aggression, is now crushing them.
Give it up! As of 2015, you lose!
I'm serious. Read this and weep. You backed the wrong horse. All your efforts are wasted.

More than 66 representatives from 58 monasteries and Buddhist institutes, including the Gaden Tripa Rizong Rinpoche, the Sakya Trizin, the Karmapa Rinpoche, the Menri Trizin, the Shabdrung Rinpoche, the Drukchen Rinpoche’s Representative Khenpo Tenzin and the Taklung Tsetrul Rinpoche’s representative Kathok Gezey Rinpoche attended the conference, as did representatives from the Jonang tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, said the exile Tibetan administration at Dharamshala on its Tibet.net website Jun 20.
      -------------
A previous (100th) Ganden Tripa (Head of the Geluga Order), Lobsang Nyingma Rinpoche, stated:
“If it [Shugden] were a real protector, it should protect the people. There may not be any protector such as this, which needs to be protected by the people. Is it proper to disturb the peace and harmony by causing conflicts, unleashing terror and shooting demeaning words in order to please the Dharmapala?
Does this fulfill the wishes of our great masters? Try to analyze and contemplate on the teachings that had been taught in the Lamrim [stages of path], Lojong [training of mind] and other scriptural texts.
Does devoting time in framing detrimental plots and committing degrading acts, which seems no different from the act of attacking monasteries wielding swords and spears and draining the holy robes of the Buddha with blood, fulfill the wishes of our great masters?”

      Than Nau
Yes, it is ironic. Just as you say.
Beijing confiscated the food of 500,000 Tibetans and then made most of them starve while that food fed only the Chinese. And they blew up over 4,000 monasteries.
Beijing supports ( some ) Shugden followers and temples in Eastern Tibet. This works well for their program to undermine the Dalai Lama.
I have seen on a Shugden website praise for the powerful, modernizing Chinese regime. But it is still basically a slave system there. China is still a feudal empire. It's the Dalai Lama who supports democracy and freedom of religion, not the Chinese.
The Fifth, Thirteenth and Fourteenth Dalai Lamas have consistently and strongly opposed Shugden. And that turns out to be of huge significance.
Shugden is a minor protector spirit, a gyalpo, and clearly very punitive. Best to avoid the gyalpos. Especially this one. That Yellow Book is pretty scary. And not how Manjusri or Yamantaka would do things.
Shugden is NOT a classical Gelugpa practice. And the Sakyas have shut down Shugden practice. Shugden practice is fairly minor in the West and is weakening among both Tibetan refugees and western tantrikas. Thank goodness.

No it is not. There are two opposing camps and there can be no reconciliation. The issues are all entirely clear.
I would be happy for each side to each simply go their own way. But the Shugden people attack and attack and attack while claiming they are wronged. That's what this is all about.
It's gone too far and it's gone on too long. and the Tibetans and western Tibetan Buddhists are turning against the Shugden people, because quite a few of the Shugden activists are so abusive.
I find them to be vile and as Buddhist guru I judge that their Mahayana Buddhist commitments are often completely destroyed. The penalty for that is, among other things, that they cannot accomplish any higher spiritual goals.
This is a zero-sum game. And the Shugden people will lose. They started a war and there can be only one outcome now. If I were on their team I would resign right now. It's hopeless.

@MsOntological I've visited the local NKT center a few times, though not as a member . . . based on what I saw in the gatherings and what little I've read of NKT literature, the Kadampa tradition does not seem to put any form of worship of (or prayer to) Dorje Shugden front and center, so to speak; instead, the primary focus seems to be on teaching Buddhist ethics and Buddhist philosophical principles, perhaps combined with a bit of honorary deference to Shakyamuni Buddha. Is that about right?

If we have put faith in someone such as the Dalai Lama, it is always hard to accept that it is possible that they have done something badly wrong. Simple logic shows that so much suffering and problems have occurred since the DL 'made it difficult' or you could say banned the practice by ostracising monks and nuns and people in Tibetan communities. Also, logic says that if the DL was a realised being he would have understood whether this practice was correct or not a long time back since he practised it for many years! These instructions of Dorje Shugden dharma protector practise are pure teachings passed down through the lineage and through HIS teachers, so is he saying the wonderful teachings of his spiritual guide Trijang Rimpoche and all the lineage gurus are wrong? This is clearly crazy...he should stop mixing political power and religion. It looks to me that him being chosen as DL was made for political reasons and he was brought up in the unfortunate position of being a political and religious leader who is treated as a king. I sympathise.
The teachings of Buddha are clear and unmistaken....we should not be the instigator of suffering for others and unfortunately the DL and his supporters are finding it difficult to look at the truth of this because their life and view and view are closely tied together. It is the teachings of Buddha which count and we should all maintain the purity of that. As soon as he stops this controlling of religious freedom, the protests will stop but The DL and many others will have to develop humility and admit they have made a mistake...this is important to be able to do on the Buddhist path...but if he does, as Buddhists we will all say how wonderful... they have developed a humble mind....there will be no losers then!! Until that day comes and DL supporters let go of thinking he is the head of Buddhism, protests will continue.
Anyone who practices Buddha's teachings purely and who has deep and profound realisations of all the stages of the path is a true lineage holder. May all interferences and obstacles to people's spiritual progress be Pacified!!

Can The Dalai Lama digest your food? Can Dorje Shugden breath for you? No. By all means revere and worship whomever appeals to you, but remember, You Are Your Own Guru. As Chan (Zen) Patriarch Bodhidharma said "Do not use a Buddha to worship a Buddha." The 1st Buddha, is your innate Buddha-Nature, deep within. The second Buddha is Universal Buddha Nature which encompasses good and bad and what lies beyond both; in all dimensions, times and non-times, spaces and non-space. Using a Buddha to worship a Buddha, is like going to the shopping mall to look for your head.

It could be the case that bodhi shug den is martyred by jealous assistants of 5th dalai lama, and the wrath that followed could be that of the fury of the dharmic wholeness, now mistook as a anger of a murdered over his murder, the legend says, he volunteered his death as he taught compassionqtely, his killers, how to kill him - but the then Dalai lama did not know any of such background facts. Further, the being helped dalai lama to escape from Chinese aggression. So, after reading, I think, this being, could be a holy sage martyred, victim martyres become guardian ancestor, in many culture. I think dalai lama should correct his reading as he should not hurt a beneficial sentient guardian, a dharma protector. He could be the bodhi dharma siddhan, known in Chinese legends a siddha from the south India. Taking all these into consideration, dalailama should correct his error, if any. The wrongs, if any, would be politically used by the political enemies of Tibet. I hope some one would take this message to his holiness Dalai Lama.

ridiculous to hear NKT and other Shugden practicing traditions described as cults. there is nothing essentially unique to NKT and certainly no belief that describes other traditions as 'false'. Geshe Kelseng describes Dorje Shugden simply as a manifestation of Buddha who is benevolent towards all beings. In this sense Dorje Shugden is no different than any other object of concentration in essence. IMHO HH Dalai Lama is creating division and causing suffering by creating this controversy out of nothing. to second a below point, how can Dorje Shugden harm others when it is a manifestation of emptiness like all other phenomena? to say "you can or can't practice a certain way" is a great hypocrisy when you are promoting non-sectarianism.

It sounds silly when put into this context right? We are all in samsara and yes things like these lack inherent existence but thats through the eyes of beings with that understanding, if a man were to distrupt me everytime im trying to meditate it would cause harm to my cultivation because of my karma and afflictions, it would be silly to say that karma will suddenly break down when we touch emptiness.
Its very easy to confuse emptiness with non-exsistence...

Leave aside relying upon him as a protector, they even deride others who do so. There are some, indeed, who echo such claims knowing nothing about it. If they want to pray to Ghosts or gods why they don´t move to other Religions instead of infiltrate one of the few Religions who can exist without them? I think it was about time to forbid this practice and the Dalai doesn´t smile any problems away he is just consequent and thats something that the Ghostprayers could learn from him, to be consequent instead of relying on anyone or anything, because the only one how can reach enlightment is oneself.

    6月2号开示;Dalai lama said.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama deserves the Bharat Ratna
No individual of the 20th Century inspired more people than Mahatma Gandhi did. He brought back the Indian tradition of Ahimsa (nonviolence) in the arena of political struggle - an idea that changed the world from civil rights movements in the US to the Solidarity movement in Poland and the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa. Albert Einstein, another equally prominent figure of the 20th Century, stated that “Generations to come will scarcely believe that such a man as this one, ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth.”
Despite becoming the most prominent symbol of peace, Mahatma Gandhi was never awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. There were several hypotheses as to why Norwegian committee members made that omission. One of them was that the Norwegian committee did not want to make the British angry. Whatever the reason/s be, Michael Sohlam, the Executive Director of the foundation, publicly declared that “…We missed a great laureate, and that’s Gandhi. It is a big regret”.
Among several world leaders inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, His Holiness the Dalai Lama of Tibet is one of them. His Holiness has said on numerous occasions that he considers himself as Gandhi’s follower. Time magazine named The Dalai Lama as Gandhi’s spiritual heir to nonviolence. In his acceptance speech, when His Holiness was awarded the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize, he paid tribute to Gandhi by saying that “the prize is a tribute to the man who founded the modern tradition of nonviolent action for change, Mahatma Gandhi whose life taught and inspired me.”
A son of India from the land of snow
When speaking to millions of his followers or to a group of small gatherings of influential individuals, His Holiness often identifies himself as a ‘Son of India.’ In his own words, His Holiness said, “I also consider myself as the son of India as every part of my brain cells are filled with ancient Indian knowledge, and my body is because of Indian rice and dal.” Since he escaped from the Chinese occupation of Tibet in 1959, His Holiness has lived in India for about 62 years now. His Holiness’s four principal Commitments - the promotion of human values; promotion of religious harmony; preservation of Tibetan culture; and reviving ancient Indian knowledge based on the Nalanda tradition, fundamentally promote ancient Indian values, are missions which His Holiness has dedicated his life to.
Whenever he met with some of the most influential world leaders or the general public, he praised and promoted Indian virtues with utmost sincerity and clarity. No other individual of our time, in my assessment, did more in promoting India’s positive image through the thousand-year tradition of compassion (Karuna) and nonviolence (Ahimsa) around the world than His Holiness The Dalai Lama of Tibet. The world recognized his efforts and awarded him some of the most prestigious awards, such as the Nobel Peace Prize (1989), United States Congressional Gold Medal (2007), and several Honorary citizenships from several countries and Honorary Doctorates from many universities.
Bharat Ratna and His Holiness the Dalai Lama
Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, has the sole purpose of recognizing individuals who have made “an exceptional service/performance of the highest order in any field of human endeavour.” A number of Indian intellectuals and thinkers have opined that the Tibetan spiritual leader deserves the Bharat Ratna for spreading the message of peace and Karuna all his life.
Shanta Kumar, a senior BJP leader and former Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, submitted to the Indian Government a letter signed by the MPs of several political parties recommending Bharat Ratna for Dalai Lama in 2019. A 2021 nationally representative survey conducted in India by IANS indicates that 62% of Indians support the motion of conferring Bharat Ratna to His Holiness.
But then why was His Holiness not awarded with Bharat Ratna so far? To put it simply, I would argue that the Indian Government is being over cautious by believing that doing so will trigger a strong response from China. While it may be a practical concern, however, we must be very clear that the purpose of awarding the Bharat Ratna to His Holiness should not be to gain some geopolitical points or to anger China but to recognize His Holiness’s unparalleled contribution toward the promotion of compassion and nonviolence.
Awarding Bharat Ratna to His Holiness to gain or send a political message to China, as opined by some politicians, is not just a practically counter-productive but also disgrace to India’s highest civilian award - Bharat Ratna and definitely not a way to honour His Holiness’s exceptional service/performance of the highest order.
Does His Holiness the Dalai Lama of Tibet need Bharat Ratna?
True to the principle of ‘Nishkam Karma Yoga’ (the Yoga of Selfless Action) from Bhagwat Gita, His Holiness’ work in promoting ancient Indian thoughts as an Indian ambassador around the world is truly devoid of any selfish motives. His sole purpose is to contribute to the well-being of all beings. Bestowing or not bestowing any recognition/awards to him does not make much sense to him personally. But it contributes positively to the work His Holiness does in promoting human values such as compassion (Karuna) and nonviolence (Ahimsa).
I agreed with veteran BJP leader Shanta Kumar when he said, “by honouring His Holiness with the Bharat Ratna, India will be honouring itself.” Bestowing Bharat Ratna to His Holiness is actually recognizing the Indian tradition of Karuna (compassion) and Ahimsa (nonviolence).
The Nobel committee regretted not awarding Mahatma Gandhi with the Nobel peace prize. It was loss not for Gandhi but for the ideals of Ahimsa (nonviolence). In awarding His Holiness the with the Bharat Ratna, we assure that Karuna (compassion) is honored in the land where its ideals are honored for thousands of years. Let’s make that happen. In fact, whose accomplishment and contribution are more appropriate to be honored with the peepal leaf-shaped medallion engraved with the Lion Capital of Ashoka than that of His Holiness the Dalai Lama of Tibet?

If there was a general ban, the practice would be prohibited.
It´s not. But it has stopped in Gelug monasteries.
The Shugden group have their own monasteries in India. They can practice freely.

Did you guys hear that the previous Karmapa upon inaugurating a Nyingma Tibetan temple in Kathmandu Nepal was displeased with a statue of Dorje Trollo that had the tiger stepping on what appeared to look like Dorje Shugden. He ordered the statue removed and then when people asked, he said that we don't need to practice it now but later in the future everybody will practice Dorje Shugden! Can you imagine His Holiness the Karmapa saying this?

Three Dalai Lamas have opposed Dorje Shugden. These are the Fifth, Thirteenth and Fourteenth Dalai Lamas. And two Ganden Tri Rinpoches have opposed Shugden. These are the Hundredth and the current Ganden Tri Rinpoches. HH Karmapa and HH Sakya Trizin and Chogyal Namkhai Norbu publically and formally oppose Dorje Shugden and support the Dalai Lama.
Even Phabongkha Rinpoche apologized for doing Shugden practice and promised to give it up. And Phabongkha Rinpoche was the main proponent of Dorje Shugden before "Geshe" Kelsang Gyatso and the New Kadampa.

    --------------
H.H. Sakya Trizin, Head of the Sakya Tradition:
“In the beginning the Sakya throne holder Sakya Sönam Rinchen bound Shugden to protect Dharma. However, neither Shudgen nor other worldly spirits were depended upon during prayer meeting at Sakya. The statue of Shugden was in some shrine rooms but in the lowest category in the pantheon.
No Sakya follower has ever taken life pledging empowerment through the medium of Shugden …
Later Shugden worship decreased strongly among Sakyas due to the efforts of three leading Sakya lineage lamas” [including the root Guru of Sakya Trizin who was] “extremely unhappy with Shugden practice and advised on the demerits of Shugden practice.
One of his disciples, Ngawang Yönten Gyatso, took strong actions to remove Shugden statues from the Sakya monasteries and to destroy them. Khyentse Dorje Chang Chökyi Lodrö was also very unhappy with Shugden practice, although he didn’t destroy statues, he performed rituals to banish Shugden. Since these three leading Sakya Lamas were against Shugden, this practice declined greatly among Sakya followers.”
    -------------
H.E. Tai Situ Rinpoche, one of the four main disciples of H.H. the Karmapa - Head of the Karma Kagyu Tradition
We Kagyu followers normally do not mention this name without fear. There is no Shugden practitioner among Kagyu followers. The reason why we fear the one I name just now, is because we believe that he causes obstacles to spiritual practice and brings discord in families and among the community of monks.
    -------------
H.H. Mindolling Trichen Rinpoche, the late Head of the Nyingma Tradition:
Shugden is a ghost. We Nyingma practitioners do not follow him. We propagate only those protectors that were bound by Padmasambhava. Shugden came after Padmasambhava. Shugden is a hungry ghost in the human realm.
    ------------
Excerpt from Lord of the Dance: The Autobiography of A Tibetan Lama, By Chagdud Tulku, an eminent Nyingma master, Padma Publishing, 1992, Pilgrims Publishers Edition, Kathmandu 2001, page 107
In Chamdo I first encountered the bitter dregs of sectarian friction between the Gelugpa and other traditions of Tibetan Buddhism… Although there were doctrinal differences among the traditions, sometimes strongly disputed in formal debates, in Kham there was generally both acceptance and cooperation. Since both my father and stepfather were Gelugpa lamas, my mother’s family was Sakya, and I was trained in both Kagyu and Nyingma traditions, any outer sectarian divisiveness would have inwardly fragmented me. I was spared this conflict until I listened to stories in Chamdo, and hearing them I felt uncomfortable and sad.
People told me that previously several monasteries housing statues of Padmasambhava and Nyingma texts were located near Chamdo, but then a Gelugpa lama named Phabongkhapa came from Central Tibet. He had contempt for the Nyingma tradition and thought that its doctrine was false and its practitioners wrongheaded. The dissention that ensued resulted in persecution, the destruction of many Nyingma texts and statues of Padmasambhava, and the conversion of monasteries from Nyingma to Gelugpa. This was followed by a severe drought and famine in the region.
    ------------
Jamyang Khyentse Chokyi Lodro wrote to Jigme Damchoe Gyatsho about Phabongkhapa’s sectarianism:
Some followers of Ven. Phabongkha Dechen Nyingpo Rinpoche engaged in heated argument on the philosophical tenets of the new and the ancient. They engaged in many wrong activities like destroying images of Padmasambhava and those of other peaceful and wrathful deities, saying that reciting the mantra of the Vajra Guru is of no value and fed the Padma Kathang to fire and water.
Likewise, they stated that turning Mani prayer wheels, observing weekly prayers for the deceased etc. are of no purpose and thus placed many on the path of wrong view.
They held Gyalpo Shugden as the supreme refuge and the embodiment of all the Three Jewels. Many monks from small monasteries in the Southern area claimed to be possessed by Shugden and ran amok in all directions destroying the three reliquaries (images of the Buddha, scriptures and stupas) etc. displaying many faults and greatly harming the teaching of Je Tsongkhapa, the second Conqueror.
Therefore, if you could compose an instructive epistle benefitting all and could publish it and distribute it throughout the three (provinces) U, Tsang and Kham it would greatly contribute to counteracting the disturbance to the teaching.

However, my faith began to waver a little, when I read the booklets we were handing out. The language used was very crude and full of insults, like an angry child had written it. This was the booklet that contained the phrase “The Saffron-Robed Muslim”, which was a phrase that stuck in my mind and disturbed me.
I thought to myself, “was this written by my Guru, who I believe is an enlightened Buddha? Even if it was not written by him, surely he must have approved this booklet!” It did not add up for me at all. I had joined Buddhism to become a better person; someone more peaceful and kind. This was not what I had imagined Buddhism to be.

      Chinese money for Shugden
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorje_Shugden_controversy
      Chinese government involvement
According to Robert Thurman, Shugden activities are financed by the United Front Work Department of the government of China as part of its strategy against the Dalai Lama.[21][42]
Raimondo Bultrini documents the Chinese coordination of Shugden activity in the book The Dalai Lama and the King Demon.[11][note 13]
Within Chinese controlled territory, the Chinese government demands
monks to worship Shugden, in conjunction with forcing them to denounce
the Dalai Lama and fly the Chinese national flag.[48]
      According to Ben Hillman,
According to one senior lama from Sichuan, the Chinese government
naturally allies itself with the Shugden supporters, not just to
undermine the Dalai Lama, but because most Shugden worshippers come from
Eastern Tibet, from areas that were only ever loosely under Lhasa’s
jurisdiction and are today integrated into the Chinese provinces of
      Sichuan and Yunnan.
Monks who had traveled across these areas note that
the central government has allocated a disproportionate amount of funds
since 1996 to pro-Shugden monasteries to assist them with construction
and renovations. Evidence of local government favoritism toward the
pro-Shugden faction began to emerge at S Monastery in 2003 when monks
applied for permission to undertake studies in India.
Despite equal numbers of applications from all khangtsens, of the 12 monks who were
issued travel documents, only one was from an anti-Shugden khangtsen.
Similarly, in 2004, one of the monastery’s smallest and (previously)
poorest khangtsens began to build an elaborate new prayer room and
residence for its handful of members. Financial support had been
obtained from Beijing through a network of pro-Shugden lamas with access
to officials at the highest level.[49]
According to the Tibetologist Thierry Dodin, "China had encouraged
division among the Tibetans by promoting followers of the Dorje Shugden
sect to key positions of authority.[web 31]
He also provides a couple of examples of China's role in Shugden activity:
For instance, the construction of Shugden temples and monasteries is
being subsidised by the State. We also know that most of the teachers
surrounding the young man who in 1995 was designated as the Panchen Lama
by the Chinese leadership, against the will of the Dalai Lama, belong
to the Shugden group. I think these examples clearly demonstrate the
role China is playing in this conflict.[web 1]
Also the Central Tibetan Administration in India has stated that "In
order to undermine the peace and harmony within the Tibetan people,
China provides political and financial support to Shugden worshippers in
Tibet, India and Nepal in particular, and in general, across the
globe." [web 32] And, in an on-line article published by the Times of India,
a source in the Religion and Culture Department of the Tibetan
Government in exile is quoted as saying that Dorje Shugden followers "have
their people in all Tibetan settlements. We are worried about their
sources of funding. It might be China or some other anti-Tibetan
      elements." [web 33]

The Dali lama just proved he is not Avaloketishvara. an enlightened being would be able to determine whether Dorje Shugdan is an enlightened being or a spirit. If the Dali Lama changed his mind on Shugdan, he must either have been mistaken then, or he is mistaken now. No enlightened being could make such a mistake. Thus the entire basis of the man's authority is disproved.

The type of social strata practised in Tibet in fact was a benign form of peasant / landowner relationship, with the landowners most often not much better off than the labourers themselves.
Indeed, there was a kinship amongst all of the population which was unique to Tibet, and bonded landlord and peasant in a much deeper sense than just their common economic fate.

Oh btw, the Dalai Lama refers to the 5th Dalai Lama's criticism of Dorje Shugden as justification of the ban on DS. However, it is not mentioned here that after the 5th Dalai Lama could not destroy DS through fire pujas and the Hayagriva rituals, the 5th Dalai Lama regretted his actions and began to propitiate him, building a temple to DS, called Trode Kangsar and hand crafting a statue of DS. The 5th Dalai Lama also wrote praises of DS. All these show that the reference has no basis.

If you seek help from the spirits through a medium/oracle and get help then after that you will trust the opinion of the spirits through the medium. So if evil spirit's want to lead you all they have to do is do you a few favours at first then after they get to guide you exactly where they want and you'd go. This is the case with the Dalai Lama. The world is mess, has always been a mess and isn't going to get better by worshipping the creation including spirit beings and all holding hands in a false sense of security. Each individual person is born once and accountable for their actions in this life and into eternity. Live, die then judgement. Not endless pointless ambiguous Karma/samsara cycles just. Dear Sir ,
Perhaps 2500 years ago there was a great man said to be named as Mr Siddharta perhaps had a realization on the nature of human suffering and he tried to explain and share it to mankind ....
and SAID TO BE there was a quotation in formal Buddhism Text itself that before Mr Siddharta passed away , he was quoted saying that " LET MY TEACHING BE YOUR TEACHER "...together with another quotation SAID TO BE quote " BELIEVE NOTHING NO MATTER WHAT YOU HEAR OR READ , EVEN FROM MY OWN MOUTH UNLESS IT AGREE WITH YOUR OWN REASON AND COMMON SENSE" ......
With these message , is common sense his realization is just like an gossip , a rumors and just a mere information not even to be accepted as a guide for own exploration ....he never recorded saying " LET YOUR TEACHER TEACH MY TEACHING ".........so why so many Buddhist monk claimed as Buddhist Teacher ?????
but soon after his death and until today , there are millions of people with an ordinary mind , feeding on his information transforming into a knowledge , creating into various culture / traditions and even benefited from it........calling themselves to be a BUDDHIST TEACHER / MASTER with various title and recognition , even claiming to reach a high level of realization .....TEACHING Buddhism itself instead of being just a reporter......... .
Mr Siddharta ‘s explanation perhaps is like a painting on the wall and lets people explore it within themselves without any people trying to be smart and explaining something with their ordinary minds .
Buddhist Teachers had transformed perhaps the greatest discovery of mankind into a factor causing human to continue suffering of confusion for thousands of years and perhaps even thousands more to come .....and now their afford is supported by another group of in formal studies known as Buddhist Scholar.
Are You Teaching Buddhism ? WHAT IF You are part of this greatest misinterpretation of mankind ?
If Buddhist Organization hold on text that said to be Mr Siddharta words as referral , then NO ONE HAVE RIGHT TO TEACH BUDDHISM .....Mr Siddharta's explanation should be served as just a mere information for own exploration of own mind and now millions of people are taking advantage by teaching it ... they became the teacher instead of the "teaching" of Mr Siddharta .
Buddhism perhaps NEVER was a form of Knowledge …..In my current mind , realization is a natural process of awakening of mind not a form of knowledge …..realization is not a form of knowledge …..So HOW COULD YOU TEACH IF BUDDHISM IS NOT A FORM OF KNOWLEDGE ?.....and I am here challenging this mind therefore I am exploring these Buddhist Teacher and Buddhist Scholar's reason of teaching Buddhism.
I am considering to pursue this matter and to stop anyone calling themselves Buddhist Teacher. I am seeking help from any party / organization to support and help me in this afford .
    Sincerely

He betrays all the great lamas that have gone before him and casts doubt on his own authenticity. The audience he is now addressing is more sophisticated and knowledgeable than he anticipated and his aspersions on 'demon worship' can be seen for the fear mongering prejudices that they are.

Tibet as a country was very poor but content, with very little difference between rich and poor.
The workers were not bonded to the aristocrats and could move on to work for other landowners if they felt they could improve their lives by doing so.

    Provocations of the Gyalpo
    by Chögyal Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche
In general one cannot say that the class of Gyalpo are always negative. There are also some important Gyalpo guardians. For example, Guru Padmasambhava gave the task of protecting the temple of Samye to Gyalpo Pehar. So it is not negative at all. But then, regarding the Gyalpo, there are different levels and it is very important for us to understand the character of the Gyalpo and how they create provocations because each of the eight classes has their own way of provocating.
The Gyalpo always provoke people with nervousness, confusion and being upset. These are the most important secondary causes through which the Gyalpo can provoke or disturb and for the person under their influence, confusion rises even more. So this is the provocation of Gyalpo in general.
For example, when I was younger, during my college years, I knew that Samye temple was very important. It was the only temple built during the time Padmasambava and the guardian of this temple is Gyalpo Pehar. So I thought that Gyalpo Pehar must be important. When I did the puja of the guardians, I always included Gyalpo Pehar. Then I also had the feeling that Gyalpo Pehar was good and that I had to do even more. But gradually I started to understood the characteristic of the provocation of the class of Gyalpo. When I did the practice of Gyalpo Pehar I observed that my confusion and nervousness increased. Then I thought that it would be better not to do this practice and since that time I haven’t done it anymore.
There also exists a Gyalpo, not of a high level like Gyalpo Pehar, but a bad spirit. (One can become a bad spirit particularly when one has received Vajrayana teaching and created some heavy samaya problems, then something bad happens and they become a bad spirit.) This kind of spirit becomes dependent on the class of Gyalpo. That means if they are a bit powerful they can become a kind of Gyalpo and can do something. Instead somebody less powerful becomes only a subject (victim) of the Gyalpo.
At the time of the 5th Dalai Lama there was a monk who broke his samaya in a very bad way and created lots of problems and at the end of his life he died very tragically and became a kind of Gyalpo. He became part of a group of Gyalpo. Later this Gyalpo manifested and some Gelugpa and Sakyapa lamas had contact with that spirit. And it seemed that that spirit helped them and served them so they considered him to be a good guardian. Then they invented a puja to have more contact with that spirit. Later the 5th Dalai Lama and Minlig Terchen, an important Nyingmapa lama, found out about this and said that this was a very bad spirit which shouldn’t be considered as a guardian, but should be eliminated. They performed many pujas in order to eliminate him but maybe they did not succeed very well.
Some Gelugpa Lamas continued to do pujas and particularly some very sectarian Gelugpa lamas believed that this Gyalpo was a very good guardian because he only protected the Gelugpa school and eliminated and controlled all the other schools. They believed that and continued to do more pujas and ask for more of these kinds of actions which seemed to work with the Gyalpo. Or at least they thought they did. And they went on like this for many centuries.
Some Lamas didn’t like what was happening and tried to go against this development, but without success. Then our present Dalai Lama told us that when he was young, one of his younger teachers taught him this practice of Gyalpo. The Gyalpo was called Gyalpo Shugden, it wasn’t just any kind of Gyalpo. He said that when he was young, he did this kind of puja for some years. But later when he studied the books of the 5th Dalai Lama, he found that it was something negative. And he discovered that this guardian had also disturbed the government of Tibet. Later on the Dalai Lama asked people for many years not to do this practice anymore, because it is very negative. That is true, because I know at least three or four people in my country, in particular one of my uncles at the Sakyapa monastery, who also did the Gyalpo practice. One of my uncles was a lama there and performed pu-jas in the Gyalpo temple for two or three years. In the end he had a very strong illness, his energy became disordered and he had a great many problems. I know three other lamas who performed pujas in the same temple and one after another each of them went mad. This was the influence of the Gyalpo. Sometimes it seems that for a short while the practice of Gyalpo helps - that is why many people do the Gyalpo puja - but in the real sense they get disturbed later on because when someone is connected with the Gyalpo, they are transformed and become subject to them. When these people die they become part of the class of Gyalpo. The life of a Gyalpo may last for five or six thousand years so for that reason it is considered something very negative.
But instead of following the advice of the present Dalai Lama some Gelugpa lamas went against him saying that this guardian is important and that they had to do this puja and this practice. They tried to develop this practice, particularly in China and Tibet: in Tibet there are many Gelugpa monasteries with Gyalpo temples. Then they made some propaganda and said that the Dalai Lama does not allow free religious practice. The Dalai Lama never said that he forbade them to do this practice; he simply advised them that it is not good. Everybody can give advice, why not? So when the Dalai Lama went to America, at the two or three different places he visited there were small groups with some Tibetan Gelugpa lamas and their western followers who protested saying: “The Dalai Lama denies us the right to free religion”. Of course the Chinese gave them a lot of support because they like it very much when Tibetans have disagreements among themselves.
So you have to be careful because now even in the western world these groups are trying to influence people saying they are spreading dharma teachings. You are always free to decide for yourselves, but you can receive negativities. In Italy this group is very influential because the second most important person who is against the Dalai Lama lives in Milan and it is the place where the practice of Gyalpo is being developed. If you have had some connection with these people you should do the practice of Guru Dragphur. By doing the practice of Guru Dragphur, you won’t receive the negative influence of the Gyalpo. But those who have already had a relationship with them should stop this relationship and should do the practice of Guru Dragphur otherwise they will find themselves with many problems later on. Or if somebody feels that these problems are already there come to me and I give you a kind of protection for not receiving these negativities.

Namkhai Norbu is a great teacher. I as a tantric Buddhist guru strongly recommend him.
And I strongly recommend the teaching of Guru Padmasambhava which he so effectively propagates around the world. Thank goodness for Padmasambhava and for Namkhai Norbu.
Supporting Guru Padma and Namkhai Norbu are key to my teaching work.
So is support for the Dalai Lama.
So is opposition to the New Kadampa / Shugden attacks on the Dalai Lama.
I have demonstrated the dialectical and theological capabilities to defeat all the Shugden people.
Since they have frequently pushed matters too far, I must defend the Mahayana against their vile and perverse attacks. And put forward the authentic Mahayana dharma, e.g. Bodhisattva ethics, and authentic dharma protectors, like Vajrapani and others propagated by Namkhai Norbu.
The following set of references provides a good starting point for those interested in Mahayana and Buddhist tantra.
I require the Dakini Teachings book for study by all my prospective students. It is my central teaching reference.

In The Crystal and the Way of Light, Chogyal Namkhai Norbu examines the spiritual path from the viewpoint of Dzogchen. He discusses the base path and fruit of Dzogchen practice, and describes his education and how he met his principal master who showed him the real meaning of direct introduction to Dzogchen.
By interweaving his life story with the teachings, he both sets Dzogchen in its traditional context and reveals its powerful contemporary relevance.
The book is richly illustrated with photos of Buddhist masters, meditational deities, and Dzogchen symbols.
      Amazon.com Review
Within Tibetan Buddhism, there is a little-known discipline called Dzogchen, the turbo path to liberation. In some traditions, the path to liberation extends over lifetimes of diligent practice, but Dzogchen is an accelerated way to achieve self-perfection.
After many years of formal study, Chogyal Namkhai Norbu was initiated into this less-formal practice, which is one of the highest yet most accessible of Tibetan Buddhist teachings.
Namkhai Norbu eventually made his way to Italy to teach, where John Shane transcribed and translated Namkhai Norbu's lectures, putting together what is now one of the most popular books on Dzogchen.
Namkhai Norbu makes it clear that these teachings are not a handbook for practice but rather an overview of Dzogchen, notably its three divisions: the base, the path, and the fruit. The ultimate and immediate goal is to achieve the primordial state of non-dual awareness, the one taste, and to maintain it. With colorful anecdotes from his own experience (finding an ancient text manifested in a dream, for example, and visiting eccentric cave yogis), Namkhai Norbu's teachings illustrate that Dzogchen is not just theory but the way to a new, and almost incomprehensible, way of being. --Brian Bruya

Padmasambhava, the Indian mystic and tantric Buddhist master, is second only to Buddha Shakyamuni as the most famous personage in the Tibetan tradition of Buddhism. In the ninth century, he made the journey across the Himalayan Mountains to establish Buddhism for the people in that country.
Now, more than 1,000 years later, we are able to hear and be touched by his voice as contained within this collection of oral advice.
Sometimes with humor, sometimes with biting sarcasm, Dakini Teachings covers a wide range of instructions. Given not only to the king of Tibet but also to uneducated people, it is a classic work of valid truths for anyone who sincerely wants to follow a spiritual path in every walk of life.

      Comment on a Profound Teaching
By Kelly Em on January 10, 2011
Yeshe Tsogal and his Holiness Guru Rinpoche cut through the noise of everyday life and have given the human race a profound set of teachings that is accessible to a new student, but which delivers the most concise exposition on the teachings that I have ever read.
This is a book of discussion and practices, and by working through the commentaries and practices, it is almost inevitable that one will develop a profound respect for this amazing being and his most loyal student, Yeshe Tsogal, Princess of Karchen.
This book was dictated in the distant past by Guru Rinpoche to Yeshe Tsogal, who concealed it in code and hid it in a cave. Guru Rinpoche named the individual who would find it generations later.
The book begins with a foundational set of practices that enable even a novice to develop a different awareness of one's own mind, it's structure, components, and their interaction. The results of those practices are then built upon by succeeding chapters. Buddhism at this level is a profound science of the nature of our minds, how they work, and where the perception of phenomena can become distorted. It also contains advice for the student in how to correct herself or himself within the context of the teachings; an area where most Buddhist books in English are silent.
In particular, Guru Rinpoche describes the outer, inner, secret, and sublime components of awareness in a way that is accessible to anyone with average or better capacity. For a book that was written so long ago, it is profoundly fresh in most places and even Rinpoche's jokes and wry sense of humor come through completely alive.
He assists the practitioner on almost every page and anticipates the problems that modern students might have with the material.
I can say that this profound treasure has deepened my faith and taken me a great distance down the path that has no path and to walk upon the ground of the three kayas. It can help you to see how to view phenomena, to connect conduct with the view, and to learn to be at one with awareness.
