I was just at a small car show at the Wake County Speedway in NC here just recently . I couldn’t tell you the amount of cringeworthy details of paint and body work I could SEE let alone what may be hidden . I unfortunately cannot TiG, Stick or MiG weld any more but looking to get into oxyacetylene welding soon to work on a Duster I am acquiring. I am almost certain that I would be doing a better job in my Coke glasses and back yard shop.
Glad you pointed out the issues. A lot of people have no clue what to look for. And hacks take full advantage of it. And that area that he sanded,isn’t that he didn’t like it, it’s more he did it to screw over the customer more. People like that make the rest of us ( body & mechs) look bad. Keep up the great work guys. 👍🏻

Good afternoon Jim, unfortunately it is just not body shops. We have had crooked bankers, judges, lawyers and the worst of all was the new car dealer with multiple titles for each new vehicle. Yes and he had the vehicles floor planned with 3 different companies and forgot to pay them off. Really gives everybody in the industry a bad rap. Great video, I sure hope it helps.
When I did my 1959 Buick convertible, I took four years to do it right. I learned body work and how to weld. Fortunately a friend of mine is a great body man and painter and he would stop by once in a while and critique my work. I had to do one panel over, but it got done correctly. My friends in the car club wanted me to "Hurry up, you're missing all the fun". But it was done correctly. Nobody noticed I did have to replace the 364 cube v8 with a 401 from a 1963 model. I also replaced the dynaflow automatic with a turbo 400 automatic and the rear end out of a 1965 Wildcat. My painter friend said my car was a good "5 footer", and an excellent 10 footer. He said at our car shows I could brag about it. I ended up trading it for a 1965 Skylark Gran Sport, and started all over again.
I shipped a pair '59 El Caminos to Japan #1) Mostly stock but everything either restored , replaced and paint as require. #2) Early 60s custom w/1960 Mercury and a few other tricks I found in the Readers Digest sized magazines of the 50's and early 60's ( I have a footlocker filled with them. A few year later they snapped a rear axle I get a call from his in-house mechanic / detailer(?) . Translator laughing while repairing the axle they found out the drum brakes backing plate was pin stripping, the shoe webbing was painted and pin stripped. When they show the car now they remove the front wheel and brake drum off. I really wanted to keep the custom but you know probably as acquainted with that talking money. Edit: Custom had a 1970 Cadillac 472 /kitted TB400.
Uncle Tony turned me on to you guys! I've seen some of the best, and I've seen just what you have! I've done builds for others and I keep getting told that I'm OCD! But if I'm not happy, it's not right!
I learned an expensive lesson with just repairs on a valued vehicle, not even a restoration. I lost a lot of money and got very little results. After that, I promised to never allow anybody else to work on my beloved. Only I repair, modify, service, my beautiful RMS Stargazer.
The sad part is that the few bad apples make the whole industry look bad. It's so hard to tell who to trust if you're not familiar with who is reputable and who isn't. Thanks for being the WHITE hats (the good guys) and not the con artists.

I've heard that a good restoration always ends up costing significantly more than the end result is worth - so you have to do it for the love of the car, not because you think you can make a few quid selling it on. This confirms it, I reckon.

It has been a struggle finding a painter for over 10 years since my last painter retired. I have been through 5 painters and I cannot find a painter that does quality work and is honest and trustworthy. I even went through the top rated(so called) in my area and even he was a disappointment. Quality is just not there, he charged high quality prices but the results was just not there. Hey Guy`s, Uncle Tony told me to join your channel and that is what I have done. UT also informed me of what a great bunch of professional Body & Paint technicians you have assembled for a team that truly cares about the level of quality of there work at Bennett`s Hot Rod Garage. I think one problem that a lot of classic car enthusiasts that purchase a classic vehicle, without first having a reputable, knowledgeable, company who does per-purchase inspections on vehicles before purchase complete a complete in depth inspection of the vehicle so that you know what you are looking at , yes it will cost a bit but well worth knowing what you are buying, a Rust Bucket- Bondo-Qween or a solid vehicle. I am looking forward to following along with the progress on the rescue Ford Mustang.
Yep its very important to have dedicated and meticulous people working for you, when you really don't care and are just in it for the money$....... a car like this is the end result, I feel bad for the owners, they got ripped off.... totally unacceptable and very sad 😟
I'd bet he didn't even de-grease the engine bay. If I were the owner, at this point I would have you sandblast or dip the whole thing, fuck the cost. No telling how much hack is hiding under all that paint. Shame, nice car. I have very fond memories of going cross country the first time with my mother the summer of '76 in her 64 1/2 Mustang convertible.
my car is that bad or worse. its a coupty hoopty. I think a lot of the problem with the rear qaurters are that they were poorly formed at the factory or put on very wrong. my quarters were probably replaced in the 80s. I could have did new fenders but chose to butter them up like a hack. I do want to some day have a nice fastback or convertible that is worthy of a pro paint job.
That was a 5 rule job 5 feet or 5 seconds after you leave with the car what ever comes first warranty I've seen that stuff before passes for a while than starts falling apart I wouldn't trust 1inch of that mess strip it to bare metal and start again
I saw a Cuda resto on a showroom floor in a ford dealership that looked fantastic until you got close to it. Paint runs, bad body work, and all. They wanted big bucks for it too. It was nasty up close and personal. But then I've also seen a brand new American Motors Matador that was put together by a third grade auto body shop. None of the panels fit right and even the hood was miss aligned.
Just the glance of the wiper stock, you see the solvent pop, die back and orange peel. Sad. Just in one tiny cowl panel. Sad. Black basecoat over black DP90 inside the cowl fresh air intake. They had to disassemble the firewall to replace parts. Why not trim them out while disassembled if they didn't want to pull the motor? That blue covers like leaded paint. Why half ass this project?
@5:37: If they sanded the quarter panel edges off how are you going to bring them back? Form them with bondo and sand to shape? Run a weld and make it look like the quarter seam? How do you fix that in the non hack fashion??
For the average person that car is just fine, your just nitpicking to justify redoing and getting paid for work that isn't needed unless its a show car and that aint ever going to be on the concourse..
Is there a way you can tell me how much this would cost to do right without calling out the client? Say if you had had the first shot on a similar car?

What I'm saying is most of the time shops are into bussiness to make money. If you go to Macco you can get what you pay for. So in all reality this kind of work can come from anywhere. I don't agree with it but at the same time even an English speaking shop worker or owners can do this kind of work. Im not gonna be rude and say the words that are on the tip of my tongue as not to offend you or whoever else watching this video. All body shops are critics of others and will step on anyone to make that money.
we are not money motivated here. we do a 100% honest job with 100% transparency. Everything we do do a car is documented, and we frequently have customers, as well as future customers, stopping in to see the work. If I find bad work from another shop, i will point it out as well as how to do it right. The cars Ive gotten from other shops that professed to be a restoration shop, and charged accordingly, were nothing more than production shops that will eventually close

A Cool car or truck to fit in with the big shots and will pay whatever it takes to have that. If a shop values what they do and want to do good work then that's what they'll do. You've got to admit though all Honesty starts at the moment when the shop owner shakes a new or returned customers hand. An experienced auto restoration guy will do what's called picking cherries. Doing this saves lots of time and energy but at the same time the shop bills need to be paid so really every shop will give a customer what they want even if a tight budget is concerned. Any shop owner knows how bad ford Lincoln Mercury cars can be when it comes to rust. Especially mustangs of that year. It's the owners responsibility to know what they are getting into when dealing with a very rusty automobile but I've seen it many times when the owner is anxious and will say just about and do just about anything to convince an auto shop to do the work. There's always someone out there that can do it cheaper! However that's when the customer has to decide whether or not he is making the right decision. If someone took my car in and didn't let me see the progress I would know at that point I made the wrong decision. If you give people what they want at any price they will still complain and tell the next guy how bad the experience was but won't say they got a great deal.

theres no way to be accurate without knowing exactly whats there. We will get in depth on this car shortly
