OMG, watching this episode now on Antenna TV. So funny! I loved CNR. And this is so true about the "stars" needing to run off after their bit. Especially Bob Hope who really just booked himself on Carson's show when he wanted to plug something. Thanks for this video.
Bob Hope had such power at NBC they gave him a unique deal that allowed him to come on Carson’s show whenever he had a special to promote. And while Johnny respected his talent he hated the fact that Bob would be on so much and just wasn’t the best guest but Bob had more power with the network than he did, if that was even possible
@@jennifersman7990I don’t think Carson respected Bob Hope. He was a non talent who had jokes written for him. In Carson’s autobiography his close associate felt that in his later appearances Carson felt Hope was lost and bumbling on camera.

Traditionally back then, the guests would stay all through the show, sitting there on the couch, perhaps interacting a little bit with the later guests, but mostly just listening. Some guests, especially the Big Names, began saying they had to leave early (some other engagement, an air flight). Often this was true, but it became a habit with certain Big Names, and they practically never stayed for the rest of the show any more. Evidently Dinah Shore had been the earlier guest and left. CNR was saying, what is there to go to at 5:45 pm? The banks, dentists, doctors, etc. were all closed for the day, so where were they going? Also, there were services such as limo service and free accommodation at a nice hotel that some guests got. Charles pointed out that he'd been coming on as a guest for 16 years, had never left early, but he never got any of the perks. That's the background to, and the gist of, the main part of what he was saying.
@@LynxSouth You have to wonder, if Dinah had to go, then how come she was there to walk back on with the flowers? If I was heading to catch a flight, I'd be straight out the door as soon as I was off the set.
